31 Days In July (Video Selections)
by Charles Rice Goff III
In June, 2005, C. Goff III had been asked by collaborator Jasun Martz to participate in a project called: "The 31 Days In July." The project was to be curated by Gregg Hill of New York. The theme of the project was to be expressed by artists creating one piece of art per day, every day, during July, 2005. The results were to be displayed in a "show" sometime in the autumn of 2005. The possibility that a book and/or a CD/DVD might be created which featured the artists' submissions was suggested as well.
Goff agreed to participate, and by the end of July, he had produced nine audio recordings, fifteen still visual images, and seven videos with audio soundtracks. July, 2005, turned out to be a very eventful month for Goff, and his 31 avant garde productions serve as a detailed diary of this tumultuous time.
During July, 2005:
A) Goff was misquoted in the New York Times regarding the convergence of media in his city of Lawrence, Kansas, and was subsequently blacklisted by the Lawrence press.
B) Goff and his wife celebrated the tenth anniversary of their first kiss and their second wedding anniversary.
C) Goff had a wisdom tooth pulled early in the month, and the resulting "dry socket" pain led him back to his oral surgeon several times.
D) Goff concluded a five-year term of employment as a local newsletter editor and events coordinator. He produced an eight page tabloid, helped organize a community meeting/potluck dinner, and trained a replacement.
E) Goff was in the process of recording his "Beaten & Pureed" album. (One of the pieces he created for "31 Days" ended up on the album.)
F) Goff regularly was tormented by his next door neighbors, who spent many late night hours throughout the entire month yelling, drinking, and partying in close proximity to Goff's office and bedroom.
G) Goff experimented extensively with a camera/video recorder which he had just acquired in June, 2005. This experimentation formed a convenient symbiosis with the "31 Days In July" project.
Unfortunately, there never was a show, book, CD, nor DVD produced to showcase the art works that Goff and the other participants produced for "The 31 Days In July" project. As a result, in autumn, 2005, Goff compiled his own 31 productions and released them on a computer data disk format through Taped Rugs Productions. The verbiage on the sleeve of Goff's "31 Days In July" read:
"31 Days In July
