Produced by DCTV (DeKalb County Television) Channel 23, this video showcases DeKalb Solicitor-General, Sherry Boston’s annual event aimed at preventing domestic violence.
Additional Information: The public event was held October 21, 2015 at the Manuel Maloof Auditorium in Decatur, GA and focused on “Building Bridges, Making Connections: Coordinating a Community Response to Domestic Violence.”
DeKalb County Solicitor-General Sherry Boston brought together citizens, law enforcement, advocacy groups and survivors for her 5th Annual Community Resource Fair and Symposium. The program featured a prosecuting attorney who is a survivor of domestic violence. April Ross became paralyzed when her husband shot her three times. The symposium is co-sponsored by the law firms, HHR Family Law and Smith & Lake.
“We invited April to speak this year because we want the community to understand that domestic violence can happen to anyone,” said Solicitor-General Sherry Boston, “We want to do everything we can to prevent these crimes. My Special Victims Unit is here to work with citizens and help them get the assistance they need – whether it’s a protective order, criminal charges or a safety plan.”
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, a woman is assaulted or beaten every nine seconds in the U.S., and one in three women will experience physical domestic violence in her lifetime.
In conjunction with the resource fair and symposium, Solicitor-General Boston collected used cell phones to donate to Verizon’s HopeLine. HopeLine is a Verizon Wireless program that turns no-longer-used wireless phones into support for victims of domestic violence. A collection box is located at the Solicitor-General’s Office on the 5th floor of the DeKalb County Courthouse.
Other participants in the symposium included the Georgia Commission on Family Violence, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, DeKalb County Police, DeKalb County Magistrate Court, the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, Georgia Commission on Family Violence, the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic Violence, DeKalb County Police, DeKalb County Magistrate Court, the Women’s Resource Center to End Domestic Violence, Raksha and Men Stopping Violence.
