Here we find another visit with the 40-years-old-and-counting experimental noise band Big City Orchestra , this time highlighting their 1988 cassette release on Ralph Records made entirely from animal sounds. I transferred it from my copy of the actual K7 and not from the master (which I don't possess), so the sound is a bit murky, but I did my best to perk it up for broadcast. Enjoy this slice of prime cassette madness from BCO ! Extra Images: Scandalous promo fliers and Ralph catalog entry...

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of this particular comic book issue we jump right into the series in the second installment. This very stylized 1980s Kirby is not for everyone, but looking at it again prior to scanning after not having read this series in a long while I felt it was worth the effort of the panel-by-panel treatment. Certain panels and pages really jump out at me.  Some lovely late-period Kirby imagery abounds in this series, and I may come back to it again in the future....

This episode contains the 2005 transfers to computer that I mixed direct from two old four-track cassettes (" # 7 " and " Jungle ") from around 1989-1990. The 4-track recordings were a collection of "backing" or "sound design" experiments made for use in a variety of contexts, live and in-studio. Listening to them a few months ago, I found them compelling enough on their own (and wonderfully lo-fi and retro) to warrant being heard finally by the public as...

The later Folkways double lp release of this was in1962, but I suspect that this Decca edition dates from many years earlier. In any case, another of my VERY dry, or particularly scholarly shows, with mainly very old vocal / choral musics as it works towards the 18th Century. I do so love to torture my local listeners with very peculiar records from time to time. Many cuts from this project had to be dropped due to extreme surface noise, but the whole thing wouldn't have fit into an hour...

I've been meaning to do a Ditko edition of the Panel-by-Panel series and thought that this great issue would be a nice start. So many fine, moody panels and great Spidey poses in this outing. I knew that Steve Ditko refused to allow sound effects lettering to be used in his Dr. Strange stories, but for some reason I had never noticed that the same ban applied to his Spider-Man pieces; it sets his work apart from the rest of the company product. Note: enjoy the goof from page eight of the story...

I had originally planned for the next Metamorpho Panel-by-Panel feature to be issue # 1, but when scanning it I discovered to my dismay that I had forgotten that my copy was missing the center spread, and thus four story pages, and so we move on to issue # 2. So much for the value of my #1! A fun and weird book as always, though. The interior lettering is familiar, but I can't recall the name of who might have done it. During my Panel-by-Panel series, I originally intended to feature at least one issue each from the four titles in Jack Kirby 's so-called Fourth World series of books, and here we find the first issue of Jimmy Olsen inked by Mike Royer . Unfortunately, some of my favorite parts of the Olsen storyline were inked by Vince Colletta , who I don't really care for, so I skipped ahead in Kirby's run on that book to # 146, putting us rather deep into the already-complex plotline. Royer is still...

Continuing my panel-by-panel study of the four-issue arc of Hawkman 's return to comic book pages in Mystery in Space #s 87-90. More excellent Adam Strange and Hawkman fun on display. By the way, the (unknown by me) letterer must have been overworked or very tired during work on the Adam Strange installment as there are two glaring mistakes in panels 84 and 96 which could have been in the original typed script, but someone should have caught them. Here's an anomaly in my radio show archive - an episode that I decided not to run on the air, but went ahead and completed as a stand-alone Internet Archive -only episode just for the fun of it. This show features two classic and fun records, first the 1974 lp by Bob  B. Blue " Are UFO's a Reality ?", followed by the obscure and amazing 7 inch single from 1967: " Universal Brotherhood Confederation / Flying Saucers: We Wish a Word with You? (sic) / Oh, People of Earth " by John Hoffman & Henry Maday . Strap yourself in and let's blast off into a pretty spacey episode! And a tip of the hat to Taylor Jessen , from whom I downloaded these gems!

I've been meaning to get around to Metamorpho , one of my childhood favorites and an odd hero indeed. I had intended to start with Metamorpho #1, the issue following this second tryout for him, but in the midst of editing the scans I found to my horror that my copy was missing the center-spread, depriving me of four pages of story. So, out came this issue instead and I started all over. Unfortunately I don't own The Brave & the Bold #57, his origin story, it is too pricey for me to get now....

Here's the last Fantastic Four " Annual " made before Jack Kirby departed from Marvel for the first time. It basically reprints a great deal of the 1963 Annual plus the back half of The Fantastic Four #1. Here I am just presenting the great Doctor Doom stories contained in it, plus the four page photo feature at the end. Kirby also created a lovely new cover for this 'Special'. I used to own the actual 1963 Annual, along with all of the other FF Annuals that Kirby participated in, but...

It's the third tryout for the return of The Spectre in Showcase and apparently the reactions were positive as he soon gets his own book, with artist Murphy Anderson only hanging on for one more issue before the switch to Neal Adams on penciling chores. This story is unusual for Anderson in that he uses a large number of over-sized panels, with many pages having only three panels or less. The letters page is included here as it features a missive from the famed DC fan Irene Vartanoff and future...

I've been interested in Fletcher Hanks ' peculiar comic book work ever since discovering it in RAW Magazine #5 way back in 1983. Thanks to Paul Karasik 's excellent collections of his work, they can now be enjoyed in their entirety. Almost. I suspected when I bought the two volumes of Hanks' work that due to the obscurity of his work, and the many assumed names that he used, that more "lost" stories by him might turn up over the years in little-collected and less-desirable old comic...

Here we find the first issue drawn AND scripted by Neal Adams . Adams had also been doing his own color guides on his books, and in this issue he began to play around with adding color to the gutters between panels, an experiment that didn't take (correction: apparently it was DC-wide at the time-I'll look into this more...), and the engravers who had to execute it must have hated having to lay in those extra areas with long straight lines, I would imagine they used rubylith tape or something...

Note that in this story we see Hawkman in his original Silver age helmet, as he hasn't won his ceremonial 'wings' that are added in issue # 42 shortly ahead - and...

The third issue of the Deadman saga, cover-dated December 1967. Adams' amazing cover won an Alley Award that year for best cover art and he colored it as well. Here we find the second installment in the Deadman saga, cover-dated November 1967. And now Neal Adams comes in as series artist, and I discover right away that his layouts do not lend themselves easily to a panel-by-panel study - lots of diagonal frames. The fourth in my series of Panel-by-Panel studies. One inspiration for this flurry of panel by panel pages in the Archive is my reading the huge two-volume set of collected Marvel monster stories by Jack Kirby from the early 1960s, which segued into the publication of the first Fantastic Four book in 1961. Many storytelling elements from the monster/fantasy/sci-fi books of that time continued to run through the early FF issues until they began to develop the formula of the book on its own. I...
