contacting al jazeera to tell us he had serious concerns about what he was saying at his request, we changed his voice. >> with all the problems reported on the 787, there's 90% that's getting swept away. hushed up. it is an ice burg. clearly there's a lot to unpack here, so let's get started. joining us on set. and director of broken dreams the boeing 787. out of newton massachusets, a former board member of the ntsb, the national transportation safety board, that is the independent federal agency that investigating every civil aviation accident in the united states thank you for being here, we mentioned off the top, the 787 had issues long before you embarked on this, what prompted you to do the film? we began looking at the airplane, after it was

grounded because of two battery fires. and he wondered what was going on -- that was a first ever event, never grounded an entire fleet of new aircraft. and in this case, and so will wanted to know what was going on, what was wrong with this plane, or was something wrong and he began digging into it and finding there was a much bigger story how did you get to that point? i think at first blush, for most people, the batteries caught on fire, they fixed the problem, it is back up in the air, all is good. >> right. >> what were the most interesting things that you found that kept you on the trail for a year. >> well, about the third day into the project for myself, i joined about six months after will began we melt will, i

with another large space company, that had a very different corporate culture, and in their culture essentially took over the boeing corporate culture. much more focused on investors and shareholder return, less on engineering, and in order to keep costs low on the development of the 787, which came along a few years later, and to convince the board of this new bowing to green light this, it came up with an unprecedented way, which was so outsource not just the manufacturing but the design. to dozens and dozens of companies around the globe. and that ended up causing huge headaches for boeing because the company's in many cases were unable to make what was an unprecedent, what is an unprecedented aircraft in terms of new technology. >> your former ntsb board mane, i want to put you on the spot here, you saw mark and will's documentary, did it raise on going issues for you about the safety of the 787 or are you looking at

this thinking all this was already resolved? i am thinking the issue of drug use, which we haven't touched yet, in the workplace, is far more concerning to me than what we have identifying so far as quality issues. one thing we shouldn't lose site of is the fact that these airplanes are overbuilt and over engineered from the beginning. so there isn't a process in the world that goes through when you are making something that you don't have variations in it. so sometimes you are doing better than what it is supposed to be doing. and sometimes you are dipping below, and that's mostly because of human beings. boeing company has been going through a lot of changes since the mcdonald douglas merger. and people resist change, and that's very evidence in seattle, there's a lot of people that are

disgruntled that are vocal about the changes. but there is no indication so far that the changes have really caused any serious safety problems. >> i want to talk about the criticisms that boeing has of the documentary, and john just mentioned something, disgruntled employees. i think i have their actual statement appear to have fallen into the facts and relying on anonymous sources who appear intent only on harming the boeing company. they may have a point, and it may be it is easy to blame it on disgruntled employees, did you get the idea that a lot of this is sour grapes. >> there is definitely a divide, and there is the so called heritage employees and the newer employees are the ones

that came after the merger. and the legacy boeing injuries and machinist regret these changes and they see them in the workplace and they are unhappy with them. he was element disgruntled the navy churr of raising concerns is to be disgruntled p many if you were not, you wouldn't have concerns to raise. i rejecten it's face that the idea that if somebody is unhappy with what they are on serving they somehow lack credibility. i think the best sources are disgruntled. >> one thing some of the employees raised with you, either anonymously or in disguise are concerns about safety.

that clip. she is also the former if the of boeing's engineers union. cynthia, thank you for being here, in the film you seem concerned about the changing of the engineering process to accommodate a faster production schedule. you are an engineer? certainly there are ways of doing that without compromising quality. what is it about it in this context that got your attention. >> i don't think cynthia can hear us. but mark, maybe you can pick up on that? cynthia has had a lot of experience with these things for three decades. what we she keying into when you interviewed with regard to the engineering schedule being accelerated? >> cynthia was the president of the engineers union. at the -- in 2010, and the sort of darkest days of the 787 program, when it was experienced delay after delay after delay. so she did not work directly on the aircraft, but she works with the engineering who worked on the aircraft, and so she was encountering people

coming up to her, which she described as an us precedented thing, working on that aircraft, working in that company, i should say. she had people coming up to her, engineering saying that they were witnessing problems on their shop floor, they was frustrated by management, not listening to them, and that they needed to be heard, there needed to be changes here weren't purely safety issues they were process issues they spoke again to that break down of management worker relations which is sort of rife with in boeing at the moment. we shared with her, a documents that were given to us, by an inside source, showing that boeing had changed it alters the quality, or allegedly it altered it's quality to expedite it's schedule. and she read that document, sat with us, read through the entire document, and then

expressed surprise and deep concern. about the implications of these changes she said she had never seen this before and that you never ever change jeering standards. >> some of then concerns you had after you were given this document from boeing. it was a boeing internal document given to you from the team. talk about your reaction to it, and why you reacted in the waugh you did. i was dismayed -- because booing has a culture of quality, and to do engineering correctly, i am hearing myself back and forth on this. >> i have a feeling you are getting feedback. >> i am getting a lot of feedback. >> all right.

we talked earlier about heritage ideas and being set in their ways and not wanting things to change, and then a new company comes in partners with boeing and things change is there a risk to consumer safety when these changes happen that do speed up production that maybe do sacrifice some quality in the name of time and speed? >> human beings tend to resist change. we heard it on the floor in frustration with management, so there's a lot of variables at play. and from a distance, it is month possible fortous get a good handle on it. but there should be concerned on the part of boeinging boeing should have, even though they put out the boilerplate statement, they should have increased the

surveillance within their own operations to see if what was being reported be these employees and probably others, in fact, has any merit and needs some changes on the part of management and those facilities. especially south carolina. south carolina is a relatively new plant, a lot of new employees. when you pyre that many people that quickly, human resources will make mistakes. you hire people that you may wouldn't have in another period of time,less pressure. >> i want to get into that. expressed his concerns about that, he couched it as a lack of quality control at the south carolina plant, take a listen. >> the people that work on it are the biggest problem. there's oan unskilled, uncaring staff, that

works on these planings and i am not the only with that feels that way. >> i know this is a very lengthy interview, what were his overriding concerns? >> he didn't think they were qualified to make a safe aircraft, or aircraft of high quality, and he said on a daily bases when he went to work he would on serve these things. and he site add lot of problems including druses use, which he alleged was going on, inside the plant was widespread. we listened to him carefully, he obviously what he had to say concerns us. we can say how can you prove this, and he volunteered to bring a camera into the plant. and record his co workers and see if he could bring us evidence, and that's where much of the concerns came from. the people who are suppose to sign off on the quality in the plant, saying that the process is that they themselves were part of -- they

found a problem. they felt they couldn't gauge if everything was done correctly. we heard of damage being done, i see as somewhat normal, john would know better than i, but was happening at a very high rate that concerns boeing itself. and that boeing had told the work force they were scared about this. one thing that is so interesting about this story, that interested me most of all, is this is all happening within a context of corporate values. who is boeing? why were they in south carolina in the first place. should they have been in south carolina. did south carolina have a history of aviation. did it have a highly

qualified work force. did id have that tradition or legacy, no to all of the above. we were told by dominicuates the super boeing reporter, that the only reason boeing left, or opened a plant second line was to punish labor union in everett washington for standing up to management. so that concerned me. what duh that say about management values or priorities. aasked the community. the unions are outdated dine sours time to give work to people instead of lazy union people, and i am sure there are a lot of people that disagree with that. >> airplanes will

was killed by uses. in a holy place during the time of prayers. but what is even more shocking is not only the cruelty of it, but also the shout of joy from gaza and from bethlehem from over places al where they were giving out sweets and throwing things in the air. has condoned the terror attacks this time. but it is not enough, because in continuation of the same sentence, he linked it to the political steps that are being taken we have no connection whatsoever what is going on in the
