5:00 am
you know with thirty to the high of one is harry's. well there are on line which is a very the. number. or if you join us on sat. this is a dialogue i want to get in one more comment because this is to. join the global conversation at this time on al-jazeera.
5:01 am
and welcome to the al-jazeera news hour live from our headquarters in doha with me and as a peron i'm coming up in the next sixty minutes delivering has biggest speech of the year u.s. president donald trump said what he's expected to call a new american moment and has first state of the union address or trump will also take credit for restoring america's place in the world box has he really break down what's rhetoric and what's reality while thousands of so-called dreamers living in limbo to hear what the president will say about immigration. u.s. president just minutes away from delivering his first state of the union address to a joint session of congress the president will outline his legislative agenda for the year it includes an economic snapshot which may talk up his successes with tax
5:02 am
reform bought his more divisive policies on immigration and foreign diplomacy have prompted several democrats to boycott the address. well let's go straight to our white house correspondent combining how could now she is joining us live from capitol hill so what are we expecting company from the presidents for a state of the union address. there's a lot of anticipation the president did give a similar dress one year ago but this is the first state of the union address now that he has been in office and as you pointed out there are going to be some themes that will be touched upon the white house relieving releasing some excerpts of what we expect from the president's speech he will talk about immigration how he believes that should benefit american families we also expect that he's going to tout what he sees as some of the successes of this year tax reform the defeat essentially of eisel pulling them back from most of the territory they once held in
5:03 am
both syria and iraq and also to talking about the need for money to rebuild america's crumbling infrastructure but at the same time as you point out there is a credible turmoil right now in the united states as the president delivers the speech he's expected to try and encourage unity but again there are some members of congress who will not be attending the speech including congresswoman barbara lee who spoke to al-jazeera just a short time ago. i have attended every state of the union since one nine hundred ninety eight this president doesn't respect the office of the presidency at all and so i don't want to normalise that there are many reasons first day when you just look at his s. whole comments about africa and about al salvador and about haiti my associates came from the continent of africa these were very racist comments and we see how they are translated into many of his policies secondly he's using our young people are dreamers in terms of a pawn in a political game and he's got them in limbo and they shouldn't be this have this
5:04 am
anxiety about their lives. well dream is and immigration will of course be. a focus off the address we're expecting that and as we've been reporting company not the only member of congress to be boycotting this address and given that as the president under pressure to be more inclusive as he speaks to a divided nation. he's under an enormous amount of pressure and i can tell you that even though some members elected not to attend some that are present most of them democrats are wearing black to protest some of the policies of the president concerns about sexual harassment and even accusations against the president with regard to that so there are even going to be differing forms of protest while the speech is taking place i can tell you also there are protests taking place outside of the u.s.
5:05 am
capitol so it is in this climate that the president has a challenge to try and reach across the aisle to members of the opposing party the democratic party to try and bring about unity at the white house says that he will in his speech extend an open hand to both parties there's a little bit of intentional language there given the fact that immediately after the speech both parties will have to try and negotiate a budget deal as we saw just a few weeks ago where there is a shutdown of the government over the issue of immigration so a lot of people are going to be watching what the president says very carefully it's unlikely he's going to be able to turn around and bring the type of unity that is necessary pass some of the legislation he's looking for in just one speech and of course it's not just the words that will matter but it's the reaction to those words that's going to be a point or i can really thank you very much for that would of course be going back to company after we hear from the president. but how is the united states fairing off to
5:06 am
a year of donald trump told many on the hall now with some of the numbers. let's take a look at some of this states of the union a lot of the economic numbers look good unemployment is at an historic low the stock market is breaking records and the u.s. economy grew two point three percent in two thousand and seventeen that were a little less than expected and behind the world average salaries stayed mostly flat but costs are rising especially housing for example anything bigger than a one bedroom apartment to simply out of reach for people working minimum wage jobs in the u.s. and that's nationwide a good indicator of how our country is doing is life expectancy while it dropped in the u.s. for the second year in a row in two thousand and sixteen to seventy eight point six years that's far below most industrialized nations education numbers look better a full ninety percent of americans over twenty five have completed sick injury
5:07 am
school that's the best showing ever thirty four percent have a university degree when it comes to governance well there's been a lot of legislative drummer in d.c. trump's promise to replace about his health care plan a famously failed what's left is in disarray his immigration reform project is hitting one wall after another most notably the plan to extend to the one on the border with mexico and the legal battle over the so-called muslim ban has now reached the supreme court trumps biggest when is text reform although it's text cuts for the rich have come under a lot of criticism and the most stressed it moves well that's deregulation the trumpet ministration and the republican controlled congress delayed suspended or reversed will the ninety government regulations that was just the first three months of two thousand and seventeen. of the some of the k. numbers from the president's first year in office and there he is us president
5:08 am
donald trump these are live pictures here it is about to give. his first state of the union address we have seen some key members of the white house key members of his cabinet so far but there he is u.s. president donald trump getting ready for that state of the union address he will of course outlined his legislative agenda for the year he's expected to tool up his successes focus on the tax reforms that he was able to. introduce the biggest as a generation. well people. are very loud and very. consistently for the u.s. president he's been greeted by house speaker farm vice president mike pence

5:57 am
what you can thank. over the next few weeks the house and senate will be voting on an immigration reform package in recent months my administration has met extensively with both democrats and republicans to craft a bipartisan approach to immigration reform based on these discussions we presented congress with a detailed proposal that should be supported by both parties as a fair compromise one where nobody gets everything they want but where our country gets the critical reforms it needs and must have thang. thank
5:58 am
you. here are the four pillars of our plan. the first pillar of our framework generously offers a path to citizenship. for one point eight million illegal immigrants who were brought here by their parents at a young age that covers almost three times more people than the previous administration covered thank you under our plan those who. has never been. a constant iraq are will be able to become full citizens of the united states over a twelve year period. the second pillar fully secures the border
5:59 am
thank you. that means building a great wall on the southern border and it means hiring more heroes like c.j. to keep our communities safe. thank . her surely our plan closes the terrible loopholes exploited by criminals and terrorists to enter our country and it finally ends the horrible and dangerous. actus of catch and release.
6:00 am
and the. third pillar and the visa lottery a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill merit or the safety of american people. it's time to begin moving toward a merit based immigration system one that it mist people who are skilled who want to work who will contribute to our society and who will love and respect our country. and the. thank you.
