>> i'm christine romans. time to really get the year started. let's start with this. searchers are trolling the java sea hoping to find more wreckage from airasia flight 8501. more bodies to reunite with loved ones found so far today. crucially, crucially the black boxes could shed light on what the cause was to crash with 162 people on board. large objects may be the fuselage but one piece was wreckage from a ship. let's turn to cnn's anna coren with the latest from surabaya. >> reporter: christine, three more bodies were identified and located and brought to the hospital at the headquarters of the operation. two males and a female. that now takes the number of bodies that have been recovered to 37.

13 have now been identified but you are talking about 162 passengers who were on board that ill-fated airasia flight 8501 that crashed on the 28th of december. now nine days ago. the problem for the recovery team is they are racing against the clock. the bodies are deteriorating in the warm tropical waters in the java sea. if they can't get them with the skin in tact on their finger tips they have to resort to teeth and bones to identify these bodies. so they are having serious problems out there. yes, 57 divers went down today when there was a window of opportunity. the weather has since come in and that has really hampered efforts once again. they are coming across a really rough conditions. there is a lot of mud at the bottom of the ocean floor. officials here telling us if the

plane is found in that mud, if that is where it is, in fact they will have great difficulty to get it out. it will delay the process. we are talking about weeks, if not months before they are able to get it. that is when they find it. we are talking about an area huge area that has been expanded and they currently scouring it with the international efforts. the united states is part of the operation to try to locate the debris. the bodies and, of course the black box flight recorders, christine. >> many of our aviation experts said that part of the ocean and sea relatively shallow. there will be other wrecks. there will be maritime remnants there that could hamper things. thank you. three minutes after the hour. president obama needs to hit back harder against north korea. outgoing relations committee robert menendez said they were too tame when they alleged the

hacking of sony pictures as cyber terrorism. >> he characterized the action by north korea as an act of vandalism. that is when you break a window. terrorism is when you destroy a building. north korea land a virtual bomb on sony's parking lot and had real consequences as a company and to many who work there. there has to be a real consequence to this otherwise you will see it happen. >> on cnn's state of the union, menchaca menendez called for stronger action. will ripley standing by with the latest in beijing this morning. good morning, will. >> reporter: good morning, john. it is interesting to hear this statement coming from north

korea. we expected fiery rhetoric but one thing they are doing is mentioning the international news coverage they are monitoring closely which reports about the skepticism from some private security experts in the united states and elsewhere that perhaps the sony hack was an inside job and not linked to north korea as the u.s. government alleges. the sanctions are a clear indication that the united states believes in north korea and was behind the attack and will take action in the form of sanctions which could hurt the regime's ability to take in weapons from exports. north korea, what they are tying to do is a the u.s. is only doing this to build a shaky case against them. and they are trying to paint the picture of a bully from the united states government. >> thank you, will. the terrorism murder trial of accused boston marathon bombing of dzhokhar tsarnaev starts with jury selection.

he is charged with plotting the 2013 boston marathon bombings. bombings that killed three people and injured 200 others. heather abbott lost her foot in the attack. she said she will be in the courtroom during the trial. >> several people i am now close with will be testifying. i want to be there to support them. i think this is my only chance to kind of experience what this might bring more me. any closure. >> tsarnaev has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges against him. washington is bracing this morning for the returning members of congress who reconvene tomorrow. republicans will take control of both chambers of the congress. republicans leaders will push for revisions in obamacare and work to undue the executive actions. the president says he will work with congress but he also notes

his veto pen will be at the ready. in the meantime house majority leader john boehner will face an issue. louis gohmert will bring his name forward as house speaker. mike huckabee has taken a step toward possible presidential run in 2016. he announced he is ending news run on fox news. the former governor says no final decisions will be made until the spring. he needs to figure out how to raise money. president obama is making south asia a foreign policy. the president and secretary of state john kerry will visit india later this month. the president will head to pakistan before the president hosts the leaders at the white house in february. time for an early start on

help after the crash. listen to kentucky police. they are blown away by the girl's courage and resilience. >> i was literally distraught by how calm she was able to and the ability for her to give us information. she was distraught but probably in shock. after trying to raise her family and get them to communicate with her and i think even touching some of them. she indicated to us that she believed her family was deceased but she hoped they were just sleeping. >> ntsb officials removed the wreckage of the plane on sunday. funeral arrangements are still pending. >> the girl walked through the woods barefoot and in summer clothes and hiked and found a house and said i have been in a plane crash. can i stay here. unbelievable. i feel for that girl.

12 minutes past the hour. police officers turning their back on the mayor bill de blasio after the eulogy of wenjian liu. hundreds of officers turning away from a video feed of de blasio after their boss bill bratton asked them to keep politics out of the funeral, but bridges clearly seem to be burned. >> there is a anti-police issue in the nation right now. our two assassinated brothers -- it's a clear example of that anti-police environment. you know many of our officers feel betrayed by the elected leaders that we have and the public that we serve. >> there are reports of minor confrontations between officers at liu's funeral. many agreed with the commissioner a funeral is not the place for political

statements against the mayor. jury selection begins in the trial of pedro hernandez. he confessed to the 1979 murder of 6-year-old etanpatz. he strangled him and left him in a an boxbox on the street. prosecutors will have to make their case with no body or no crime scene evidence. 100 soldiers starting the year in quarantine. they just returned from west africa to build treatment centers. they will be monitored for 21 days and not allowed to have physical contact with family members. a u.s. health care worker is being monitored closely at a hospital in nebraska this morning. the patient experienced a high risk of exposure to ebola while

to respond yet again. and another response, four in total, christine. that virginia roberts actually met the queen. the palace has no record of the meeting. the allegations were that she was kept as a sex slave for jeffery epstein and his friends. over a period of three years, she was forced to have sexual relation in three locations with prince andrew. london and new york. in the british virgin islands where there was actually an orgy of underage girls. buckingham palace being clear there is no evidence to this at all. prince andrew is not party to this in florida. he hasn't gotten any legal addressed. they feel they have to respond in some way. they are saying it is completely

untrue all of this prince andrew flew back to london last night and meeting with his legal teams to discuss a way forward. >> jeffery epstein has been embroiled in these accusations before. part of a legal drama. is prince andrew friends with jeffery epstein? >> reporter: they certainly were friends. lots of photos with them together. we know that because prince andrew apologized for the friendship back in 2011 after epstein was convicted of sexual offenses. i think prince andrew thought that was the end of it. after, that it was probably guilt by association. the latest legal papers point the finger at prince andrew for the first time. that is why there is a huge amount of concern at buckingham

at least one of the objects discovered by the search team has turned out to be part of a ship not the aircraft. officials have been scouring the java sea hoping to find more wreckage and bodies. at least three bodies have been found today. the crucial piece of evidence is the black boxes, but still no progress to report there. still no pings detected. over the last few days searchers have found several large objects they believed could be connected to the fuselage, but the discovery of an object is not shows how arguous this process is. let's turn to anna coren in surabaya. >> reporter: it is a frustrating and slow task to try to locate the wreckage of airasia flight 8501. they have been on it now for nine days. yes, they discovered three more

bodies this afternoon and identified more. that takes the number to 37 retrieved and 13 identified. you are talking about 162 passengers who were on board the ill-fated flight that left here in surabaya on 28th of december to singapore. 42 minutes in the flight it lost all communication. now it is believed it is at the bottom of the java sea. as you say, they have located four items through sonar. believed to be the aircraft. they certainly had hoped a much larger piece of the wreckage up to 18 meters in length was also part of the aircraft. unfortunately that has turned out to be a shipwreck. the families of victims have been coming to the crisis center to learn more information every day. those who are identifying the victims say they are racing against the clock.

the reason is the bodies are decomposing in the warm tropical waters. up to day nine now. it is feared the skin on the finger tips will no longer be used to identify these bodies. they will have to use the teeth and bones to make that identification. that is a much longer process. officials here have offered families a trip to the search site. they are willing to fly them up there to pay their respects and lay flowers and that may perhaps somehow ease the pain and suffering that they are going through. you know as far as the officials on the ground going through their own difficulties the weather is against them the waves and storms constantly. we are in the middle of monsoon season. on top of that there is this thick layer of mud on the bottom of the ocean floor which is causing problems for divers. there is zero visibility. you know this is going to be

new york city police officers some of them at least, showed their anger again at mayor bill de blasio at the funeral of wenjian liu. the second time in days the members of the force turned their backs on bill de blasio upset at what they believe is

his lack of support for the police corps. a week ago officers used the same gesture at the funeral of rafael ramos. miguel marquez has this report. >> reporter: john and christine, it is just the end of the funeral procession here for officer, now detective wenjian liu. if you can hear this it is the bagpipes ceremonial bagpipes from nypd coming back. ♪ i'm looking about a half mile as far as i can see, down 65th street here in brooklyn. all i can see is that wall that ocean, that sea of blue. just an incredible turnout. nypd preparing for 25,000 police officers probably thousands more citizens from the area here who turned out.

the funeral was touching. can't really say it was a funeral, but series of speeches in the buddhist tradition. the mayor speaking very highly of wenjian liu. relating two stories. one, this is a guy who is a fisherman who loved fishing. when he caught a big one, he would like to share it with the family. also detective liu was somebody who loved to care for people. on a single call he talked to the family that he related the story that there was an old man who had fallen down. liu stayed with him for hours before he could get back up. he wasn't injured, but he wanted company. his cousin getting up and saying detective liu, someone we know as wenjian liu, they know as joe. this was a family that moved from china 20 years ago and

become fully americanized. this is the end of the ceremony. >> we would like to thank everyone for expressing your sympathy and support. detail dismiss! >> reporter: the dismissal of the second funeral, a tough time for the nypd and city of new york. i can tell you that here in front of the church none of the officers turned their backs on the mayor as he spoke. a little farther down, there were a few. i spoke to one detective, retired detective who said he saw thousands of police officers turn their backs farther down the way. still a lot of upset. the mayor has met with the five police unions. the mayor has spent a lot of time with the ramos family and liu family in recent days. things may be moving in more -- things may be on more stable

had sex with an underage girl. the allegation against the duke of york comes in a lawsuit filed in florida. it claims that billionaire jeffery epstein forced underage women to have sex with powerful men. cnn's max foster following the story for us. max, just within the last hour we learned the name of the accuser. >> reporter: her name is virginia roberts. the reason her name came out is she gave an interview to "the mail" on sunday in u.k. another publication outlining her allegations against prince andrew which came to our attention when they were within court documents filed in florida. she said she was forced to have sexual relations with the prince as she was a minor in throw

locations. according to the court filing, epstein said to give the prince whatever he required and report back to him with details. the palace refuting this on every level. prince andrew was out of the u.k. over the weekend. he is back. the palace statement was it is emphatically denied that the duke of york had any former contact with virginia roberts. the allegations made are false and without any foundation john. >> any legal jeopardy in the u.k. or in the united states max? >> reporter: the issue here is that prince andrew hasn't had a chance to have his say in court filing. that is the issue the palace is saying. how does he get involved in this? it is difficult in the u.k. if it happened in the u.k. he
