we're tracking what you need to know for this very cold day. good morning, everyone, welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> and i'm christine romans. it's wednesday, january 7th 4:00 a.m. in the east. 11 days into the search for airasia flight 8501. the tail has been found. this is potentially crucial here. divers struggling against stormy seas near zero visibility. they have found at least part of the tail section of that plane. this could be a major find because the black boxes in airbus 832200 are housed in the section. anna cornyn from surabaya indonesia. >> reporter: a major find for airasia flight 8501. the search and recovery teams discovered the tail of the aircraft which contains the vital black box flight recorders. now, they found the tail by

using sonar equipment early this morning before sending down teals of divers who then confirmed the major discovery. it's all possible due to a break in the weather. well were divers were sent back in the water late this afternoon to inspect the wreckage. and all assets have been deployed to that specific area helicopters and aircraft searching for the wreckage and bodies of the 162 passengers on board the airbus a-220. 122 are still missing. with the discovery of the tail and hopefully those vital black boxes, it is hard to provide the answers for the investigators and families as to what went so terribly wrong. >> those are obviously remarkable pictures to see this morning after so many setbacks. setback after setback. they couldn't get in the water once there. they couldn't see under the

water. some of what they found was a ship wreck but now these pictures that they're taking are crucial. >> those series of still pictures they want to see what they will find. and just finding this piece of wreckage in its own right is a turning point. >> absolutely. up to everything they've been through up until now this is what they've been waiting for. 3 minutes after the hour officers on new alert after a new warning from the boston police department. a man carrying a loaded .22 went to the police department with a gun. to test security. officers found the gun when they searched 29-year-old jason armstrong when they noticed him acting strangely and smelling of marijuana. baltimore police commissioner said they're lucky officers did not end up in a terrible situation. >> let me say again, an organized gang in the city of

baltimore sent an armed suspect into our building to see our security. to test our security. that is alarming for us. that is alarming to me. and i'm going to send a message along those lines to understand that we're not going to cower, we're not going to back down. clearly this was not a rumor. clearly this was not something that was hyperbole. this happened. >> armstrong told police that he was told to enter the police station. he faces a variety of charges now. police officers may also be taking extra precautions that baltimore police are recommending. a new plunge in nypd police officers especially from minor offenses since two worse murdered in their patrol car lat month. the police union denies that officers are fearful or there's an organized work slowdown due to a rift between the mayor and

the police. the father of one of those officers told cnn's don lemon about the moment he was told his son had been hit. >> the first thing that comes to your head is like this really can't be happening. and then of course when they tell you he's critical and he's been shot twice, i think the worst things possible can go through your mind. >> both injured officers and drew dossi and aliro pellerrano are expected to recover. we have the latest on the police shoot-out. >> reporter: john and christine, we're learning a lot more about new york city police officers found themselves in. five officers total responded, they were all getting off shift when they heard about this robbery in progress. they all responded. some of them perhaps did not even have their safety vests on their protective gear when they

responded to the robbery. when they called into the dispatcher you could literally hear the adrenaline in their voices. >> shots fired. we have two down, we have two down. >> when those officers got to the area they didn't go directly to the robbery location. they cased the entire area assuming that the robbery was outside of that area. they were in fact right. they saw them at another store down the way. that's when that individual who we believe was jason polanco at the window fired at the office. he got off three shots they say before getting away. >> he fires three gun, three rounds in the .44 caliber magnum. very afternoon caliber handgun. he has no more rounds in the gun. >> police say this all unraveled

quickly. one of the police officers got off three shots. he's the only officer who fired said nypd. he hit one of the suspects in the leg. he checked into the hospital he said he fed them a line but it was quickly apparent to the police that this was somebody connected to the robbery attempt. he then led them to the person who brought him to the hospital. and then to jason polanco. allel three in custody. police say this is absolute proof that noz slowdown out there. these police officers were off duty and they responded to a very dangerous situation. john christine. >> miguel marquez, thanks so much. new this month, investigators will respond to a deadly killing at a va in texas. there's no motive for the shooting the facility will be closed as investigators question patients and staffers who

wildly approving it. the president is scheduled to make a brief stop in detroit today. he will be appearing at a ford assembly plant. the plant where the president is speaking was shut down this week because dealers have too many cars on their lots. >> car sales have been very good. automakers are ramping up production. time for an "early start" on "your money." investors and asian european stocks up. the dow slid another 130 points yesterday. that's on top of big losses monday. it's been a tough start to the year. the dow down 2.5% over the first days. crude oil now $47 a barrel this morning. that's almost a six-year low. that trend right there shows you a bear market my friends. oil was trading over $100 just this summer. price cut in half. great news for drivers, terrible

good morning. welcome back to "early start." this morning's breaking news divers in the java sea have located at least part of the tail section of airasia flight 8501. this discovery is a breakthrough because the plane's black boxes are mounted in the tail section. divers have spent 11 days fighting harsh weather at the surface, zero visibility at the bottom. efforts to find the rest of the plane continue. and of course we don't know if those black boxes are in that exact piece of the tail section, but now they've located wreckage. physical wreckage on the bottom of the java sea. incredible development. >> these images are amazing to look at after everything they've been through. a major, major development. 14 minutes after the hour. it's very cold outside. i mean it. forecasters say the wind of cold

across the midwest could push windchills below 40 below zero. >> dangerous conditions. that's closing schools, we're talking major cities like kansas city minneapolis, chicago, des moines, indianapolis omaha. schools in green bay mr. start on a two-hour delay. public schools in cleveland and milwaukee, they haven't decided yet. many parents worry that keeping schools open when lead to wrecks like these in the milwaukee area. chicago officials are expecting a tricky commute. they say the smaller amount of snowfall leading to the polar vortex will have fewer drivers but be on the lookout for black ice. other dangers, ponds and lakes icing over. an 11-year-old boy was rescued after falling in a frozen pond.

he was described as cold and conscious. and roads in pennsylvania a mess. plows out in force. in wexford, a car slid right under this tractor trailer hauling rock salt. and in center city a patch of black ice. >> icy roads causing havoc in indiana. look at that on i-65. it was shut down for over five hours. two people were treated for nonlife-threatening injuries. and the deep freeze is affecting air travelers. more than 1,000 flights cancelled tuesday. could be more of the same today. passengers on a southwest flight had a midair scare when the plane hit a patch of air and they were rocking and rolling. >> there was a lurch. two people fell out of their

seats. a stewardess threw a bag of garbage. it looked quite disastrous in the back of the plane where we were. >> you want to check out what the cold can do. that's lake superior on the coast of minnesota. it's steaming up the lakes. the great lakes, they're on fire. you can see vapor with something known as sea smoke. >> it's beautiful. but, boy, is it cold out there. how much longer will the cold go on. meteorologist pedram javaheri has more. pedram? >> a massive high pressure in place. 30 million waking up to temperatures below zero. that's just the ambient air temperature. factor in the wind windchills warning for 40 to 50 below zero in the northern tier of the country. and some gusts could make it feel like 30 below zero in the morning hours. 5 feels like 15 below.

minneapolis, minus 3 feels like 25 below. look down south, miami, escaping all of this 70s across the board could warm up to 80 degrees across the region of south florida. these are the temperature minus 1, chishgcago the best they can do. we know massive school closures in place across this region as the jet stream has taken a nosedive to the south. the trend looks to be in place for at least three to four days before a slight warming trend. former virginia governor bob mcdonnell said he will appeal his two-year corruption sentence for accepting money in exchange for promoting dietary supplements. before sentenced tuesday, mcdonnell cold the judge he was hard broken and humbled, but

said he made mistakes. >> as i said in court, i am a fallen human being. i've made mistakes in my life. i always try to put the best interests of the people first as governor. but i have failed the times and some of the judgments that i have made during the course of my governorship i've hurt myself. my family and my beloved people of virginia. and for that i am deeply deeply sorry. >> now it should be said is that prosecutors are actually enraged with the two-year sentence that the judge decided on is much less than what they were seeking. they wanted at least 6 1/2 years. his wife mcdonnell's wife, maureen, who was convicted along with him will be sentenced next month. the naacp calling for a new grand jury to consider charges against a ferguson police officer who fatally shot michael brown. in a letter to a st. louis judge the group says they have grave legal concerns. they're asking for a special

prosecutor to oversee the case. and in an investigation with the grand jury proceedings that ended in a decision not to indict officer wilson. >> police have released photos of suspected during the unrest in ferguson. they're hoping to identify the people who burglarized a gas station. looters set it on fire following an announcement that a grand jury had cleared officer wilson. five earthquakes reported tuesday in the dallas-ft. worth area. officials with the us geological survey say the wakes were centered in nearly the same area as irving texas. strongest, a magnitude 2.6. no reports of injuries or damage. next up cooperstown, for four baseball greats headed tuesday. the class includes randy johnson, the big units,

20 years after paul revere and samuel adams first placed it in a small corner of the massachusetts statehouse the contents have been opened and its contents have been so

careful removed. what treasures did the box old? did the items survive intact? cnn's alexandra field was there for the exciting unveiling. >> reporter: christine, john physically we're talking about something very small, 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches it's enough to take us back to this nation's very beginning. these relics were put together back in 1795. it's been 220 years. now the whole world gets to see what's inside. five newspapers and coins. a model imprinted with george washington. a paper seal of the commonwealth of massachusetts. and perhaps most significantly, a silver plate with the names etched on it paul revere and samuel adams. they're the two who put the relics together back in 1795. they buried them under a

cornerstone at the massachusetts statehouse. it wasn't until 1855 that all of those things were found. they were removed and conserved, this time put in a brass box made for the occasion. as you look inside the box, can see the name of the make etched inside. they were placed back in the cornerstone of the state house. just last month, they were found again. it took a conservator from the museum of fine arts seven hours to carefully dig that box out. you can actually see the white plaster marks on the box. it took five hours to take off the eight screws that held it together for all of these years. and took another hour to unpack the contents. those contents will soon go on display. they'll take certain steps to conserve them. but soon the world will be able to see the relics. eventually the time capsule will be reconstructed and returned to the statehouse.

police officers on alert this morning. warned that they could become the targets. gunmen. baltimore police revealing their own scare as two officers recovering from being shot. dangerous cold weather bearing across the country. a dangerous whirl. and a chill that's closing schools and delaying flights. welcome back to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. we do have breaking news for airasia flight 8501. just a few hours ago, we got word that divers located at least part of the tail section of the plane. look at these remarkable photos. this is what investigators have been waiting to see. a crucial development that could be a turning point in this investigation which has been set back again and again and again by rough weather high seas near zero visibility. it's been zero visibility i

should say. it is inside the tail section of an airbus a-320 where the black boxes are held. so it is in this section that you're looking at right now that could house the black boxes, so crucial for piecing together why the plane went down. let's get more from cnn's anna coren in surabaya. >> yeah john a major breakthrough as you describe the tail of a-320. not all are located in the tails, but with this particular tail they are. we're talking about the flight data recorder and the cockpit audio recorder. as the airasia ceo tony fernandes said a short time ago, if this is the right part of the tail the black boxes will be there. divers are in the water as we

speak. they went back down after taking those incredible images that our viewers are looking at. and they are now inspecting the tail in the hope that they locate those black boxes. if the divers can't do that they're going to have to retrieve it pull it up on to one of the vessels, according to the search and rescue agency. they have all of the equipment, all the ships. everything that has been tried at the search is now being directed to this particular site. but as we know if the black boxes are in this particular part of the tail we don't know if this tail is completely intact then from that information, in those black boxes, we'll be able to get a much better idea as to what exactly happened to the airasia flight 8501. with which 162 passengers and crew on board. now 40 bodies have since been recovered, which 24 have now been identified, john. >> divers as you say, in the water right now with that tail

section, trying to see if they can get their hands on the black boxes if they are in part of the section. a remarkable development this morning, anna. we also got word overnight that the airline is announcing a new compensation plan for the families of those on board the plane. >> reporter: yeah that's right. airasia confirming today that they will pay each family 100,000 u.s. dollars. this is in accordance to indonesian regulations. now, they initially were offering the families 24,000 u.s. dollars just to help them through this period. many of the families rejected it. i guess there were concerns as to whether this was just the payment. it also i guess, places a sense of finality on their loved once and that they are then dead. speaking to an airasia official a short time ago, he said you know so many of these families are still holding out hope that their family members are still

alive. this despite the tail being found. despite 40 bodies being recovered. but certainly for the families that we have spoken to john they just want their loved ones back. the bodies back so they can then bury them. >> anna coren for us in surabaya with these major developments overnight. we'll check with you again. diver it's in water now. officers across the country on high alert after a new warning from the baltimore police department. a man carrying a loaded .22-caliber hand gone walked into a boston police department allegedly on orders from one of the street gangs. the orders to test the station's security. officials said the officers found the gun when they searched 29-year-old jason armstrong after they say they noticed him acting strangely and smelling of marijuana. the police commissioner said they were lucky officers didn't end up in a terrible situation.

healthy for the market. there had has not been one in stocks since 2011. so don't freak out. but what's rattling the markets, oil here. crude oil $47 a barrel right now, cut in half since the summer. that chart is so good for consumers right there. $2.19 a gallon average. that's the average for a gallon of gas. it's been falling for 100 days. that chart right there scares the ba jesus out of investors. >> should i freak out? >> do not freak out. it's a pause that refreshes potentially. 43 minutes after the hour. happening right now -- millions across the country facing these awful temperatures. it is very cold. so cold that schools are closed. flights are cancelled. a lot of them. we'll break down how this will affect you -- next.

cancelled nationwide on tuesday. could be more of the same today, so how much longer is this all going to last. and just how cold is it going to get. let's get to meteorologist pedram javaheri for an early look at our forecast. >> good morning, guys. let's show you what's happening across the country. your high temperatures as remarkable as they come. not often you see this setup. minus 1 high temperature in chicago. minus 4 in minneapolis. windchills easily 20 to 30 degrees below zero. some areas 40 degrees below. public schools closed. and you work your way to the south, atlanta finally dropping off into the 30s after the 60s just a couple of days ago. in fact you take a look at the trend, atlanta went from 66 down to 54 on tuesday. again upper 30s on wednesday. of course new york city dropped off to the lower 20s on tuesday. lunchtime forecast minneapolis, minus 10 feels like minus 30. across new york 24 it will feel like 10. you have tall buildings anywhere

around manhattan you're going to run into significant windchills when it comes those buildings funneling the winds across that region. this looks like it will continue over the next couple days before a very gradual warming trend returns to your forecast. the contents of a 220-year-old time capsule buried the nation's founding fathers reveal what paul revere and samuel adams left behind. that's next.

220 years after paul revere and samuel adams first placed it in the massachusetts statehouse, contents have been opened and its contents have been so careful removed. what treasures did the box hold? have the items survived intact? cnn's alexandra field was there at the museum of fine arts for unveiling. >> reporter: christine, john, physically, we're talking about something very small, 5 1/2 by 7 1/2 inches, it's enough to take us back to this nation's very beginning. these relics were first combed together back in 1795. it's been 220 years. and now the whole world finally gets to see what's inside. five newspapers 23 coins, one of them stretches as far back as

1652. a model imprinted with george washington. a paper seal of the commonwealth of massachusetts. and perhaps most significantly, a silver plate with the names etched on it paul revere and samuel adams. they're the two men who put these relics together in the first place back in 1795. in july they buried them together under a cornerstone at the massachusetts statehouse and that's where they stayed. it wasn't until 1855 that all of those things were found. they were removed and conserved, this time put in a brass box that was made just for the occasion. actually when you look inside the box, you can see the name of the maker etched inside. the items were then placed back in the box back at the cornerstone at the statehouse. just last month, they were found again. it took a conservator from the museum of fine arts seven hours to carefully dig that box out. you can actually see the white plaster marks still on the brass. it took about five hours to carefully unscrew the eight

screws that held it together for all of these years. and took another hour to unpack the contents. those contents will soon go on display. they'll take certain steps to conserve them. but soon the world will be able to come here and see those contents those relics that were left behind. eventually, the time capsule will be reconstructed and returned to the statehouse. but until then people will have an opportunity to see part of the story in history in the way that the great patriot and founding father really wanted us to christine, john. >> i like seeing the relics in the cradle of civilization from boston massachusetts, where our entire social structure was created so many years ago. >> it's like what would we put in there today? you couldn't put a paper? would you put a newspaper? would you put a coin an ipad? >> bitcoins and, you know -- >> a bail of crude oil, maybe, because it could be worth a lot in 200 years. falling oil and gas prices are good news.
