"early start" continues right now. the breaking news this morning. just minutes ago, we learned that isis is claiming responsibility for the shooting in texas two where two men tried to shoot their way into the contest of trying to draw the prophet muhammad. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. it is tuesday may 5th. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. in details this morning, about the attack on that contest in garland, texas. there is new information about the two men killed by police as they tried to shoot their way into the contest to draw cartoons of the prophet muhammad. although the gunmen wore body armor and carried assault rifles a local police officer was able to bring them down with

his service pistol. the two gunmen drove to garland from phoenix where they were roommates. signs of a motive. one gunman tweeted before the attack linking himself to isis. we will get more on the claim of responsibility of isis which just broke, but let's get the details from kyung lah. >> reporter: john this is the apartment complex where the two men were roommates. we are learning more about each of them. nadir soofi is one of the gunmen. a pakistani source said soofi has a pakistani father and a mother described as white american. when they divorced he and his brother moved with their father to pakistan. he went to an elite school in islamabad. then he and his brother decided to leave the country. we know from his mosque that soofi had a pizza shop here. he had a son.

we also know more about elton simpson. the other gunman. he has a criminal record. in 2011 he has a criminal record of lying to authorities. at the time the authorities tried to stick him with an international terrorism charge. that did not come to fruition. his family is not muselim. we hear he converted around high school age. although he had a conviction in 2011 the president of the mosque said he did not have any displays of violence. no warning signs. investigators have combed through the apartment and walking out with box upon box of evidence. they are trying to make the connection of the men and how they turned into lone wolves. >> thank you, kyung. before we move on let me update you. isis in a report on their official radio channel has now claimed responsibility for that attack in garland, texas.

the announcer on the radio station says two of their soldiers attacked the event in garland. that is how isis often refers to its followers around the world. the broadcast on the radio station says these men opened fire at the direction of the exhibit. one security guard was injured. he was in the isis radio report which says the two brothers as they say, died in an exchange of gunfire. the significance here isis claiming responsibility for the attack in garland, texas, that took place sunday night. now it is possible isis is claiming responsibility although they had no direct knowledge before or during. nevertheless the terror group is trying to draw connections with what happened here in the united states. more on that claim in moments. members of the phoenix mosque that both gunmen attended claim they are in shock this

morning. the mosque president says that elton simpson was a remember until five years ago, around the time the fbi arrested simpson on a false statement charge. the mosque president said simpson stopped going to services. >> you have two members that they didn't show any signs of radicalization or any signs of even thinking about those things in that manner. when that happens, it shocks you. you know, how good did you know these people. that's the question people ask. >> simpson's family released a statement calling the act a senseless act of violence. we proudly support the men and women of our law enforcement

agencies. we are sure many are curious to know if we know of elton's plans. we do not. just like everyone in our beautiful country, we are struggling to understand. the organizer of the texas event is defending the event. pamela geller comparing it to "charlie hebdo." she told jake tapper that the attack proved how necessary the event was. >> we held an event in defense of free speech. the objective was first to show depictions of muhammad over the past 400 years where they did not slaughter people for drawing them in art work. we know this is used by people who are imposing restrictions on free speech in the west. it is working. the media won't run cartoons. if the media had run cartoons in 2005 there would never have been this power given to it.

now, anyone that runs cartoons is targeted. if all of the media had run it you couldn't kill everybody. >> the keynote speaker was a dutch politician geert wilders. he has a long history as a critic of islam. at the texas event, on sunday wilders kept true to form criticizing those who question the cartoon contest. >> they want to prohibit cartoons books and films which they find insulting. and our answer is don't mess with texas. don't mess with the free west and don't mess with our freedom of speech. >> that was geert wilders who

spoke in texas over the weekend. our breaking news this morning, on their radio channel, isis is claiming responsibility for the attack. i want to bring in atika shubert. good morning, atika. isis claiming responsibility but i suppose we don't have direct evidence it was ordered by isis yet. >> reporter: this is the question whether or not they ordered it or whether or not the two men who carried out the attack were aspiring to be members of isis. i think isis essentially supports these lone wolf attacks. when you see an attack like what happened in texas or against "charlie hebdo" in paris, it is not clear these attacks were ordered by isis. if the perpetrators say they swear allegiance to isis it is accepted after their death. then isis claims responsibility.

unfortunately, these are the hardest attacks to stop john. >> it may be a distinction without a difference. at it may be completely irrelevant. the fact is the attacks are happening. the target of the attack this time was the event in texas. the keynote speaker, a man well known in europe and well known to you. geert wilders. a right wing politician who is apparently on the al qaeda hit list. >> reporter: he is on the hit list. this is a man who has campaigned for freedom of speech and goes to events like the draw muhammad event. he is known for wanting to have the koran, the holy book banned. he is not exactly a proponent of freedom of speech but against the religion of islam. this made him famous.

channel, an isis announcer said two soldiers attacked the event. al khilafa is a term they use to describe their fighters. the two brothers died in the exchange of gunfire. isis claiming responsibility. whether they directed this attack remains to be seen. i want to bring in nick paton walsh. nick i suppose it was only a matter of time before isis tried to claim some kind much direct connection to these attacks. >> reporter: absolutely. john what is clear here they do not have those kind of key details investigators would expect some details to have in planning of the particular attack. that doesn't preclude them of having knowledge of it. this is one of the factors about isis in the modern age of social

media. they can simply never been in contact with the texas gunman before the attack. once that pledge of allegiance or claim to work on isis behalf is out there from the attackers in recordings or tweets beforehand they can say yes, that was one of our operations. chillingly in this they say there are potentially future attacks. i quote, we say for the defenders of the cross, the u.s. future attacks will be harsher and worse. the islamic state soldiers will inflict harm on you with the grace of god. the future is just around the corner. that is designed to instill fear. in the statement they make john they refer to al khilafa soldiers.

isis is now declared to be their caliphate and leader. this is a statement from their official radio station which is said to be headquartered in mosul. they say that two brothers died in the exchange of gun fire where the security guard was injured. this perhaps may have had involvement that isis command in planning but key here john no suggestion in the statements yet there is prior knowledge or specific details that point to them having had a hand in actually making this happen. claiming it as one of theirs. john. >> that in and of itself may not be relevant. the model of terror in the cases of the last decade has changed from al qaeda centrally planning attacks to groups like isis calling on followers all over

the world to take up arms independently with rocks, if they have to. it could be that is what happened here. the call the isis call was taken up by these independent actors in phoenix, arizona, who took it upon themselves inspired by isis to drive to texas to shoot up this event. >> reporter: absolutely. that is one of the biggest challenges facing investigators and officials in the years ahead. you used to have a model to plot leaders who planned a network and you could scale out what would happen next. now individuals, some with previous brushes with law enforcement, but simply take it upon themselves to read something on the internet or the boston marathon bombers who read how to make a bomb.

the breaking news this morning. isis claiming credit for sunday's attack to draw cartoons of the prophet muhammad. this claim on the official isis radio channel. two al khilafa soldiers. that is the term isis uses to refer to its own fighter. the announcer on the isis radio channel described the shootout. said the two brothers died in the exchange of gunfire. for the latest we will bring in senior international correspondent nick paton walsh. nick as of now, no direct evidence that they advised or directed this attack in advance. >> reporter: absolutely. this is a short claim of responsibility if you can really call it that broadcast on the radio station which we think is based out of northern iraq i city of mosul. it basically says two al khilafa

soldiers the area of northern syria and iraq which isis declared to be the caliphate. the first of the two brothers killed in the exchange of gunfire with a security guard outside garland, texas. noting the security guard was injured. no detail john in the announcement that the investigators could latch on to that could suggest prior knowledge with the plot. this represents the key problem with isis. they are like a global brand. people seeking this demise, latch themselves on to and put out a tweet in the hours ahead of the actual attack and sub subsequently subsequently it is up to isis to claim the attack is something they feel anffiliation with some degree. this message goes on to give a

sinister threat. point out the attack they launched this time did not succeed in texas. they say to the defenders of the cross, in the u.s., the attacks will be harsher. we will inflict greater harm on you with the grace of god. that feeds into the broader narrative that they wish to take attacks against people of the united states to a new level. i spoke a few minutes ago, the issue behind this is the complexity of the investigators to intercept plots like. this ten years ago, a leader who would bring out the attacks through others in the network. now those who had brushes with the law enforcement in the past and now with a well planned attack but ultimately a failure

in this instance. it is extraordinarily hard for investigators to stop that sort of thing. there are not many trace signs ahead of it. >> it was planned that they knew where they were going and armed with body armor. they did not get very far in their plan. they were stopped at the barrier by police with a service pistol. the men based in phoenix, arizona, they drove to garland, texas. one elton simpson had been known to police prior to this. arrested for trying to get to somalia, earlier and making false statements to police. the claim of responsibility shall we say or you put correctly the claim of affiliation ends with the future is just around the corner. that has to be of concern to authorities. not because any evidence of specific planned attacks, but now we have evidence of people being inspired in the united

states by isis at a minimum to attack interests here. >> reporter: yes, you could say the boston marathon bombers could have felt a sense of inspiration from al qaeda. it is not entirely clear they ended up in that situation in boston. this is a long brewing fear that has been on the minds of officials for years. it is extraordinarily difficult when people can be quote trained through an online magazine or inspired by tweets. read videos on social media from a completely different part of the world to cause them to carry out violence or ruthless acts. it is hard to prevent that. it is not a model which fits. in this case even when an individual has a brush with law enforcement, one of the gunmen here trying to get to somalia,

that is not something they can constantly monitor. in paris, the gunmen had been under surveillance by french authorities for some time. that is the major challenge ahead. >> we saw nidal hasan with ties to the peninsula. now these two men in texas with perhaps some links to isis. our nick paton walsh covering this for us. isis on the radio channel claiming responsibility or connection to the attacks in texas. the organizer of the texas event itself is defending it. program geller compared the cartoon contest to the "charlie hebdo" attacks in paris. the attack on sunday proved how necessary the event was. >> we held an event in defense of free speech. the objective was to show depictions of muhammad over the

popularity. the reason for that is he campaigns off this issue of freedom of speech and this anti-islam campaign. it is interesting while he campaigns for freedom of speech in texas, he is called for the banning of the koran. islamic holy book in the netherlands. it is statements like that which led to several lawsuits in the netherlands particularly for inciting hatred. that is the accusation. in fact, he faces a trial later this year. so far, he has been acquitted of those those incitement trials. we will see how this effects him politically. it is most likely he will continue with the speeches in parliament. >> atika shubert, thank you. the politics in europe different than the politics here. baltimore's top prosecutor defending charges against police officers implicated in the death
