port city of tianjin. dozens of firefighters are missing and hundreds injured and dozens killed. the blast knocked down doors and blew out windows for miles. let's go to cnn's will ripley. he is more than a mile from the blast site. look at the damage behind you, will, more than a mile away. >> reporter: i'm thinking about the firefighters, christine, at the epicenter of the blast. you think about the fact they are missing and people can't get close enough to look. it is really not good news. the death toll expected to rise here. we are more than a mile away. imagine a lot of people looking out the windows because they saw a huge fire ball for minutes before the explosion happened. they are looking out windows that were in tact. then the explosion happened and the blast smashes the glass and

pushes walls in on people. that is why we have seen so many injuries here. 500 and rising at area hospitals because more than a mile from the accident, you see so much debris. part of this convention center building is still falling down as we stand out here. look at this. there are streets that are full of cars that look just like this. leading up to the epicenter of the explosion. i want to show you the smoke plume. it has gotten worse. the fire is out of control. firefighters are not in there battling it right now. they are so concerned about the toxic chemicals that are burning. they don't know what is being spewed into the air here right now. this is really, christine, what it amounts to, an incredibly tragic industrial accident just two hours from the chinese capital. we are seeing the first signs the chinese government is trying to censor this.

the top four scrubbed trending issues are talking about tianjin. the government not wanting people to know the true extent of what appears to be a horrific tragedy. >> that's a very good point, will. we should point out that the rapid rise of the chinese economy and infrastructure there. a big port city. it has also come with risks and with a -- i guess a safety infrastructure that is not as mature as the citizens would like it to be. the government tries to control that message, don't they? >> reporter: absolutely. we are seeing that. we saw that when we were reporting outside of the hospital earlier today. we were doing a live report. we were surrounded by a group of people who appeared to be in some cases, family members and friends, but also security personnel videotaping us.

for all we know, there could have been plain clothed officers surrounding us as well. this is an indication and people have been coming up to us at this location saying foreign media go away. this is not a picture that china wants to show the world. china doesn't want to know the engine fuelling the economic growth and many industrial accidents occurred over the years and thousands died. the fact that toxic chemicals, the city officials days ago were talking about ways to deal with them. then this to happen to a building and the windows more than a mile away in a city of 15 million people. china has major events coming up in weeks. they will do whatever they can to contain the embarrassing and tragic situation.

welcome back to "early start." i'm christine romans. let's begin with the breaking news. explosions rocking a warehouse in china killing at least 44 people. many of them firefighters. this disaster unfolding in the port city of tianjin. hundreds more injured. many critically. dozens firefighters missing at this hour. these blasts at a facility that handles hazardous materials. knocked outdoor doors and windows for miles. let's bring in cnn's will ripley. >> reporter: hi, christine. people describe this as an apocalyptic scene. the explosion so huge, many people watched windows in their homes get blown out.

many of them did not have time to put on shoes, but running through shards of glass in them homes and on the streets. there were gruesome pictures on social media of people walking through blood trying to escape. i'm standing more than a mile from the epicenter. you see the black smoke spewing from the apartments over there. that is where this happened in a shipping port area. a relatively new development. farther away from the densely populated areas like this. it did not matter. the windows here blown out. a lot of people have not been able to return to their homes because there is a huge area around the fire that is still burning that is blocked off because there is great concern of the toxic chemicals burning. frankly the firefighters and city officials don't know what's burning right now. all they know is you can still smell and taste the chemicals.

even where we are standing. there is a lot of fear for the safety of the citizens. 15 million people live here. they cannot safely send in firefighters to look for the 36 missing in addition to the dozen firefighters dead. that number is expected to rise. >> tell us, will, about the industrial accidents in china. with the rapid economic growth, there have been industrial accidents all too frequently there. >> reporter: there have. one of the worst years was 2002 when 7,000 chinese miners died in one year. obviously, there have been meetings in the city. the government trying to enforce safety codes for workers. within a matter of days ago, there was a notice that was posted by city leaders. they wanted to talk to these companies dealing in industrial chemicals to tianjin to safely

pancreas for example. we know it spread. did it spread to lymph nodes? what we are hearing, he is planning to undergo treatment for this. that is upon detail. christine, you may know this, he has a strong family history of pancreatic cancer. his father died of pancreatic cancer. every one of his siblings died of pancreatic cancer and his mother developed pancreatic cancer. not sure why, but it appears a strong family history. that is something that will be looked at obviously with regard to the former president. we understand that he had been getting scans for screening purposes because of the family history up until recently, ct scans. he was getting blood tests to see if he was developing early signs. it may have been a blood test

that necessitated the operation he had on august 3rd. at that point, they removed the small mass from around his liver. they determined that he had evidence it spread. this is a tough cancer. no matter how you look at it. even if he was a much younger man. at 90, the cancer will take its toll and the treatment. as more details come to us, we which bring them to you, christine. back to you. >> thank you, sanjay. let's get an early start on your money. china guiding the currency. the devaluation of the yuan has markets roiled. potentially complicating the federal reserves plans to raise the interest rates. the devaluation spree may be coming to an end. let's bring in alison kosik for a look at how the world markets are reacting. >> good morning, christine.

we are actually seeing stocks higher. asian shares are up despite the yuan devaluation. we are seeing stocks higher in europe. stock futures in the u.s. higher. china central bank came out to calm global fears of the yuan plunge in recent days. it has no more plans to devalue the currency. china central bank is billing it as free market reform. experts are saying it is making exports cheaper. that means a stronger dollar and that hurts exporters. we are keeping an eye on crude oil. prices stabilized after a lower than expected supply in the u.s. opec climbed to a record in july. the national average is $2.61. that is almost a dollar cheaper

its first manned air strikes on isis from turkey. the u.s. led coalition is using the turkish bases. the access means shorter flight teams for fighter jets. let's get the latest from cnn's nick paton walsh. nick, this is the important phase in the coalition against isis. >> reporter: absolutely. there is one key figure in all of this, christine. that is 15. 15 minutes now. the flight time from the runway behind me here to syria where potentially these six f-16 jets are based behind me can look for isis targets. that is when they see something on the ground and decide to strike or go after longer planned targets. we understand the first strikes launched yesterday were going after targets in syria that have

long been sought. this morning, we have seen f-16s takeoff and land. we are not sure if they are turkish or u.s. because of the speed they move. it is vital to have the logistical ability. the faster refuelling and reloading which means the jets can be in the sky for longer periods of time. it expands the time in which they can hover over that part of northern syria. sad news from yesterday. tragic for the families involved. the village not far from the turkish border, there was an air strike. it is unlikely the syrians. the coalition had an aircraft in the sky and conducted a strike nearby. that strike, unclear to know who was behind it, killed ten fighters and eight civilians targeting a weapons depot. some children said by some reports to be among those dead. part of the horrifying toll
