deal. trump promised to move the embassy to jerusalem. and mike pompeo, we heard about the issue of torture. he was asked about that. he promised not to engage in the activities. you said both of them really struck tough lines on russia and russia's role in the cyber attacks. let's hear from both of them right now. >> russia, to quote the chairman's opening statement has chosen to be a strategic competitor and adversary in key areas. i'm all for engagement, but we have to recognize reality and what russia is up to. there is a deep number of areas where we can engage cooperatively. the most important thing is we recognize the reality of what we deal with with mr. putin and we

wrerecognize he is trying to br the north atlantic alliance. >> it is clear what took place in the efforts to hack information and impact on democracy. as we develop the facts, i will relay those to the president and team around him and to you so we all can have a robust discussion about how to take on what is an enormous threat. this is very real. it is growing. it is not new in that sense. this was an aggressive action taken by the senior leadership in russia. >> reporter: mattis and pompeo were not the only two picks to break from donald trump. rex tillerson broke on issues of the tpp and free trade deal and trump opposed it repeatedly. tillerson did not oppose it. as well as the pick for the department of homeland security, john kelly, generaagainst waterboardi waterboarding, said a wall may

not be sufficient to stop illegal immigration and targeting groups like musl muslim-americans. >> you see the range and differences with the cabinet nominees. one final note on the mattis nomination. the house is set to vote today on the waiver allowing general mattis to serve as secretary of defense. that waiver is needed because military officers are legally barred from top civilian jobs in the pentagon for seven years after retiring. mattis retired in 2013. the senate approved a waiver on thursday and so did the house armed services committee despite the criticism. the transition team pulled the plans to have mattis testify before them. we have new information this morning on the intelligence summary containing unverified claims that russia may have compromising information on donald trump. new reporting that contradicts the statements from the trump

team. the summary was not just handed to trump as part of the package of documents. officials told cnn that fbi director james comey briefed him on it and joe biden and president obama were briefed on the same information. let's get the latest from evan perez. >> reporter: john and christine, james comey and president-elect donald trump had a brief one and one conversation last friday. multiple u.s. officials tell cnn it is during that pull aside that comey briefed the president-elect on the unverified claims of the financial information on the president-elect. four of the nation's top intelligence chiefs briefed mr. trump on the meddling in the 2016 elections. they decided comey would be the one to handle the sensitive discussion with mr. trump.

it was described as cordial to us. reporters also heard thursday from vice president biden. that he and president obama were briefed on the unproven allegations on president-elect donald trump. biden said he read the 35-page opposition research document put together by a former british officer. political opponents of president-elect donald trump hired the operative to put together the dossier. >> that reporting that james comey himself briefed donald trump on a separate pull aside, it contradicts what trump transition people have been saying and the fact we heard from james clapper and the president on the briefing flies in the face of what we have heard from the trump transition team. breaking overnight, fbi director james comey is reacting to the news that the watch dog group is discussing how they

handled the investigation. james comey is criticized for releasing the information of the e-mails to the clinton probe. some people think that cost clinton the election. last night, comey responded with a statement from the fbi. he said i'm grateful to the department of justice inspector general for taking on the review. i hope he is able to share his conclusion was the public because everyone will benefit from the transparency regarding this matter he. > . the house votes this afternoon. listen to paul ryan for his vision for repealing the affordable care act at the cnn town hall. >> we want to do this at the same time and in some cases the same bill. we want to advance repealing its law with the replacement at the same time. i hope don't ha i don't have a date.

in arizona, a trooper is alive thanks to a gun toting good samaritan who showed up just in time to save him. this unfolded on i-10 thursday morning. 50 miles west of phoenix. an unidentified veteran trooper at the scene of a car accident when a gunman shot him in the shoulder and started beating him. that is when a driver pulled up and ordered the man to stop. he pulled out his gun and fatally shot the man and saved the trooper's life. >> he has a severe gunshot wound to the right shoulder. a lot of abrasions and cuts. they were stitching up his head from where he was impacted from the pavement. unbelievably, his words were, sir, you don't need to make a fuss of this. >> the officer is in stable

cnn town hall last night. >> we want to do this at the same time and in some cases, the same bill. we want to advance repealing its law with replacement at the same time. i don't have a date. that is something we are working on right now. it will take us time. we are working on this as fast as possible. >> the first 100 days? >> definitely a plan within the first 100 days. >> house speaker paul ryan dabbed with jake tapper. that may be a headline. many republicans on the fence about the vote in the house. some concern about the cost of repealing the affordable care act and there is no one single plan yet to replace it. straight repeal would affect coverage for millions of americans and give tax cuts to the rich who are paying for some provisions with two surcharges. >> i will have to go back and find that. there is no detail plan to replace obamacare, proposals may show us what it would look like.

first, cost. obamacare subsidizes premiums based on income. lower incomes equal higher subsidy. the gop favors reimbursing with tax credits based on age. so younger people would get less. second, the sick. one of the cornerstones of the obamacare is protecting those with pre-existing conditions. this is why they did this. the gop plan will likely protect them as well, but only if they maintained continuous coverage. that forces the sick and uninsured to look for plans in state high risk pools which have a troubled history until they were disbanded after obamacare. finally, medicaid. obamacare expanded free coverage to all adults below a threshold. this is something that some health care advocates say could disproportionately really hurt the poor. >> the way the republicans

choose to replace is going to be key. it will need to be voted on and by most accounts, it will need 60 votes in the senate to pass. it is not a certainty. >> there are some republicans concerned about repealing immediately without replacement. that means rich are getting a tax cut. the burden of obamacare has been put on the highest earning americans. that could be potentially poor o optics. and 20 minutes until the hour. news this morning from the house oversight committee. the republican chair has summoned the head of the government ethics office who is critical of how president-elect donald trump is distancing or not distancing himself from the business empire. walter schaub slammed the plan to hand his businesses over to his sons. he called it meaningless. some ethics leaders see the move as a threat to pull funding from the ethics office unless it lays off donald trump.

a baltimore mother and three children hospitalized this morning after a tragic house

meet emissions rules. it is not there to cheat on emissions tests, but improve engine performance. that is the view of the company. the epa says no. the software was never disclosed. that is a violation of the clean air act even if they were not cheating on emissions. fiat shares down 18% before it was halted in trading by the new york stock exchange. it lost 10% on the day. amazon extending an olive branch. it will create 100,000 jobs over the next year and a half. much of the current and future work force is employees at warehouses and phones. they would have added jobs regardless of who won the election. the messaging has changed. now announcements seem to play
