persuade people that your heart is in the right place. >> david gergen, we alliance appreciate you. thank you for being here. you are live in the "cnn newsroom." i'm ana ana cabrera in new york. a deadly day. it started with serious clashes in the streets of charlottesville. admitted white nationalists fighting against people who came out to face them and break up their racist rally. some people were hurt before things turned very tragic. [ bleep ] one woman died in this crowd when that car suddenly accelerated and slammed into a

group of people protesting against the white nationalists. several others were hurt. some of their injuries are life threatening. we heard from the president. he heard about the incident from his resort in new jersey. what he said and notably didn't say in a moment. first, brian todd is in charlottesville, virginia, right now. brian, you first on the ground there. update us on what police are saying about this deadly crash and set is scene as we head into the evening. >> reporter: setting the scene for you at the scene of the crash, we're here near the corner of 4th street and water streets in shafrlt. we're going to zoom in and tell you where the car strike occurred. you see the police officers up there on 4th street with that dark colored van pointing toward us. that's a maroon colored honda van. we believe it's a van. right behind it is a silver car. both of those cars were struck in that incident. that is where authorities say a

32-year-old female pedestrian was struck and killed. you can see officers are still processing the crime scene. they were gathering evidence here earlier. you have barricades and police tape up there. the driver is in custody. they're not giving a name of that person yet. some clarification here on the casualties tonight, ana. we heard from the governor a short time ago that there were a total of three fatalities today, but two of them occurred in a helicopter crash that occurred outside the city center on an old farm road outside the center. how that's exactly related to today's events, we're not sure. we're gathering more information about the helicopter crash. but the governor lumped that in with the fatality here downtown connected to the protests. he is saying a total of three fatalities. we do know two of those are connected to the oprah crash. we have an update for you tonight, ana, on the injuries. according to city officials and police, four people are in

serious condition, five people are a level above that in critical can listen to we have five in critical condition, four in serious condition, six people in fair condition and four people listed in good condition tonight. quite a number of injuries people are dealing with tonight. earlier they said they treated about 35 people. there were a lot of casualties from the actual engagement at the rally and in the fighting outside the venue and here behind me on 4th street where the incident occurred. as we head toward nightfall, ana, tensions are at a boil here. authorities ready for whatever happens, i talked to the city manager a short time ago. he said more than 700 law enforcement officers are going to deployed on the streets tonight in anticipation of anything happening. as we head toward nightfall there's still quite a lot of tension here. >> good to see calm right now.

particularly how he hasn't called out the nationalists. >> ana, he's been tweeting the last couple hours his condolences to the virginia state police who were killed in that helicopter crash and also the young woman who was killed when that car plowed through the crowd at the counterdemonstration earlier today. let's play some of what he had to say several hours ago to comment on what's been going on in charlottesville. >> we condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. it's been going on for a long time in our country. not donald trump, not barack obama, it's been going on for a

long long time. >> reporter: and a lot of people have taken issue with the phrase on many sides which we heard the president say there. saying he's ekwagt the people who've been marching wearing nazi arm bands, some of them also carrying trump signs and wearing make america greats again hats, he's ekwagt those folks with people who are count counterdemonstrating. i asked a white house official what he meant. i was told he was condemning hate from all sources and all sides. there was violence between all protests and counterprotesters today. they are doubling down on the idea that many people are to blame here that both sides are

to blame. another thing the president said was we want to straighten out the situation in charlottesville and study it to see what we're doing as a country. the president at no point has condemned the white nationalists that storms the campus of the university of virginia with torches. he also hasn't criticized the ones who organized a rally today. s whether it's his former rival, hillary clinton, or fellow republicans, he's called the press, the media, the enemy of the people, and yet he has not said a negative word at white nationalists or white nationalism. so far i haven't heard anything on where he stands on that.

white nationalism? >> no, ana, it's not. this is a very important point because even though there were clashes today and fights broke out, yes, between the protesters and the counterprotesters, let's look at the core reason you had a rally of white nationalists. this is one of the biggest gathering of white supremeists in years. that alone would have been word a condemnation of president trump, even without the violence that took place. that's what i think is the core issue here when we talk about the false equivalencesy of saying there many to blame on it. that is not the case. let's keep our eye on what the main issue is that this is a white extremists rally and white supremacis supremacist values are the values that should be called out by the president of the united states and by everyone. >> simone, what kind of

opportunity is this for the president to reach out beyond his base and try to bring more people under this umbrella as the president of the whole country? >> i think this is a real opportunity for president trump to show us that he is actually willing and wanting to lead us all, that he's not just worried about his base but the well-being of the american people. as a press person, communications person who has worked for many, many princ principles, if something happens, if there's breaking news, you have to be able to pivot. today, we did not see this white house pivot really well. we saw him come out with a statement at the top that was not a very strong statement. it was extremely weak. and then pivot to talking about how great america is, quot quote/unquote, doing. for people all across the

nationalists rally in charlottesville. one woman killed, dozen injured. the driver for you in custody. earlier white nationalists clutching torches marched through this college town. this paints the picture of the tension that turned violent. the governor declaring a state of emergency. today's rally triggered by plans to remove a statute of general robert e. lee from a park there. i want to bring in an expert, what do you think is driving this movement right now? >> what we're seeing is this new part of the white supremacists movement connected to alt-right that have been in the shadows for the last eight years. and they are out and it's like a snowball that's been building and building. it seems to be an unstoppable force. that's how they see themselves. they see themselves as a part of

a second american revolution to take the country back. we're going to be seeing a lot more of this as we go on. >> you grew up in the south and met with white nationalists. are there common characteristics, common life experiences? >> sure many of them see the world changing too fast. they don't know how to process the changes in our demographics, the change in sexual identity, the change in our economy. these are things that are transforming the country at a quick pace and they are a bit out of sorts. so they have this notion of going back to something where the world makes sense. there's that push back, and the push back happens on the playground, bullying against kids who are immigrants or muslims. it happens on the political spectrum but it also happens on

the streets where the alt-right gets their megaphone and gets their message heard through the media. >> we were talking about how the president reacted to the violence. his opponents and republicans too are ripping apart some of those comments today no matter where one land on the political spectrum randy, is there a correct way to talk about these hate groups? >> there is. i mean, the fact is that they are responding to the changes, but the changes are about creating a society that's more just and more equal. for those folks some of that feels like oppression. so it's not fair to equate both sides of the debate as unequal invested in -- there is a group that is trying to turn back the clock. and i think the problem is when we see those as two sides of the same coin, the antifa schists.

20-year-old james alex fields jr. was booked in the crash that killed one woman and injured several others. earlier today officials held a press conference condemning the violence. >> today was a sad day for your great common we actually in the city of charlottesville. there are three fatalities today in addition to many individuals who've been hurt. let me start off first by thanking all of your law enforcement officials. this could have been a much worse day today. i have a message to all the nazis who came into charlottesville today. our message is plain and simple. go home. you are not wanted in this great commonwealth. this tide of hatred and bigotry that has come down and marched on the lawn of one of the

none of the injuries were due to engagement with law enforcement. 14 people have been treated for injuries resulting from individual engagements. nonpedestrians were treatied for injuries in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of 4th street and water street here in downtown charlottesville. their injuries range from life threatening to minor. the crash also claimed the life of a 32-year-old female pedestrian at the intersection as she was crossing the street. we are still in the process of notifying her next of kin, so we will not be releasing her information until that takes place as a courtesy to the family. the suspect that left the scene of the crash was located moments later and the male driver is in custody with charges pending. we are currently treating this as a criminal homicide investigation. also i want to extend my appreciation to the many

back to breaking news. police just confirmed the suspect in today's deadly car attack in charlottesville, virginia, 20-year-old james alex fields jr. was booked in this crash ha killed one woman and injured almost two dozen others. brian todd is joining us by phone. what more are you learning? >> well, ana, we got the information a short time ago from the superintendent of the shar charlottesville jail.

he's the one that firmed that he was the suspect in this crash. he was booked into jail this afternoon. he is charged with one count of second degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of failure to stop in an accident resulting in a death. he is described as a 20-year-old white mail from ohio. again, 20-year-old james alex fields is booked into the local jail. he was booked there, into the regional jail this afternoon according to martin cumer, the superintendent of the regional jail. we have a suspect. you know, suspect -- witness accounts, according to people that witnessed the accident say it was horrific. he sped at very, very high speed into this section of protesters walking down 4th street here in charlottesville, struck several pedestrians, struck a car which then rammed into another

vehicle, and you had the one person killed, a 32-year-old female pedestrian. her name has not been released yet. we have also just learned the names of two other people killed related to the protest. these are two virginia state troopers killed in a helicopter crash. they're named as jay cohen and trooper burke bates. we believe bates was the pilot of the helicopter. that crashed this afternoon. just getting the two names of the troopers who perished in the crash this afternoon. >> brian, we know there was ant pages for what would happen as night fell. the governor declaring a state of emergency for that area. i'm curious if there's any kind of curfew in place? >> we're told, ana, the police chief of charlottesville, al thomas, has been granted the authority to issue a curfew but that as of now he has not done it yet. things are fairly quiet here in charlottesville tonight, but it

scuffle. that scuffle broke out, people separated and then a car plowed into a crowd of the counterprotesters. at least one person was killed. here is what two men who witnesses that horrific car crash told us in charlottesville, virginia. >> the car reversed very fast back up the street as you can see in the video. we were still, you know, in the scene and jumped out to get around the corner of this barrier of this building, and the car flew by and immediately, you know, there were victims started coming out. my friend ran after the car. i gave first aid to a lady that had come out from the scene and, yeah, that's basically what happened. the car disappeared after that. >> reporter: were you able to get a look at the driver as he sped by you? >> no, the car had tinted windows, so it was -- it was difficult to see in. so i was -- i was more looking, is this person going to come
