you and how large are they expecting this to get? >> reporter: christine, right behind me now you can probably see this is the thick black smoke from burning tires. the protesters have used it to obscure the sight of the movement from the israeli snipers. we have seen tear gas. it is shaping up to be a volatile day. just this morning, it is still ferre fairly early for the protests. we have seen people streaming if. they are expecting over -- streaming in. they are expecting 100,000 people along the border. this is one of multiple camps here. the berm behind me and their goal is to breach that berm. they want to return the lands from the 1948 war. on the israel provide, they say

is the united states going to sanction european companies that do business with iran? >> i think the issue here is what the europeans will do. if they see that it is not in their interest to stay in the deal, we will have to watch what the iranians do. they love to stay in the deal. why shouldn't they? they got everything they wanted from the obama administration. i think the europeans will see it is in their interest to come along with us. >> national security advisor john bolton refusing to rule out sanctions against european companies doing business with iran and the iranians announce a timeline as the foreign minister is touring asia and europe in an attempt to salvage the deal. we have cnn's frederik pleitgen with the latest. what is the likelihood this is a deal without the united states?

>> reporter: it is interesting, dave. throughout the weekend, iranian officials were ripping into donald trump and the united states for getting out of the deal. from our vantage point here, it seems more than dividing moderates and hard liners in the country. it seems to be uniting them. one is a common position. iran wants to stay in the nuclear agreement. they want to ensure iranian agreement is fully in the deal. they also stand to economically benefit a great deal. the next stop is europe. that will be the tricky one. iranians say european companies have to be able to invest in iran without fearing retribution from the united states. the big question is are the europeans willing to do that? they are angry with president trump for pulling out of the deal. will they protect their

the injured to hospital. we have seen thousands of people coming here today and the israeli military expect over 100,000 people up and down the border. there are five camps that palestinians have been gathering. their goal is to breach the border to get to the other side to return to lands they lost to israel in the 1948 war. israel, for its part, says that is a red line. they won't allow people to cross over. they say the worst nightmare is massive breach of the border fence. they have a system. they will issue warnings and fire non lethal means like tear gas and if they get too close, they will start shooting protesters to push them back. when you do have this massive amount of people, this is the largest we have seen so far, you will have a recipe for a deadly day, christine. >> we know the opening

iran and the iranians announce a timeline for saving the nuclear deal that president trump abandoned. and now as foreign minister is touring asia and europe in an attempt to salvage the deal. we have cnn's frederik pleitgen with the latest. what is the likelihood this is a deal without the united states? >> reporter: christine, it is interesting some countries ripping into the president and the united states over the deal. now the hard liners and moderates seem to have a common position. that common position is very clear. they want to try to preserve the nuclear agreement. they also say iran's interests need to be preserved and protected. that means they want investment from abroad. that is where the trip by the foreign minister comes in.

he is in moscow. he has been speaking to sergei lavrov. they came up with the joint statement saying they are committed to preserving the nuclear agreement minus the united states. the big day, though, christine, is going to be tomorrow when zarif moves on to europe because as you have seen from the john bolton sound we just saw, those are the countries that are key. iranians want investment from europe and they want to be sure that european companies are protected when they invest in iran. if they want to invest in iran from retribution from the united states. it would be a tall order for the europeans to essentihessentiall against one of the long standing allies. they are angry with the united states for pulling out of the deal. >> 75 years of goodwill between the united states and europeans.
