the e is finally here for toys r us. it will close the final 200 stores friday. toys r us filed for bankruptcy. it went out of business in march. two main reasons. increased competition from box stores and online retailers and it just had a huge debt load. china blocking access to hbo web site after john oliver made jokes like this over president jinping. >> xi jinping is sensitive about his perceived resemblance to winnie the pooh. i'm not sure it is that strong. >> winnie the pooh aside, oliver had a segment last week over the policies. since then, china censored john oliver. >> it was a terrific segment.

good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm dave briggs. can we elect those guys? they know civility. they didn't care about politics. they jumped into action to save somebody. tuesday, june 26th. 5:00 a.m. in the east. good morning. we start with the plea for civility. when it comes to taking responsibility for the uncivil tone, nobody wants to own it. white house press secretary sarah sanders speaking out for the first time since she was asked to leave a virginia restaurant over the weekend. >> i was asked to leave because i work for president trump. healthy debate on ideas and philosophy is important. the calls for harassment and the push for any trump supporter is unacceptable an. we should -- unacceptable. we should be able to disagree without fear of harm. this goes for all people regardless of politics. >> the white house officials say president trump asked sanders to start her briefing with that statement. the restaurant's owner's

do they? does it start at the top? >> ultimately in politics as in life, we are all responsible for the things we say and do and how we treat other people. i think the big difference here as you showed the president -- now president -- has been saying incendiary things since the campaign. often at rallies in a safe space for him. supporters vanderbi supporters surrounding him. now people are encouraged to whatever extent you read into it to take that out of the spaces where among like-minded people and confront people who might not think the same way as us. taking it out of our heads and maybe twitter and taking it to the streets. taking it to restaurants and things likes that. that is the shift here. politics has never been a civil game. you know, trump was never

insulting john mccain to his face. people were not saying mean things other than at a debate. now it has shifted and it is inn civility in a -- incivility in a new arena. >> and one that reflecting the midwest polling over the long weekend from trump supporters. trump haters have not realized how much they helped with the c condesc condescencion. this idea that the president was elected to rock the boat and overthrow the establishment. every bit of anxiety of civility feeds into that narrative. this is why the president was elected. the more the mainstream and the status quo is up in arms about the behavior of trump and his

affiliates or that trump has started a wave of incivility in washington, his supporters love it, brenna. >> they do. people want to feel like they are heard. feel like somebody is fighting for them. fighting for their values. pushing back against people who may not agree with them. i think there's a dangerous line. we have seen this with the tragic congressional baseball shooting last year. we saw it with gabby giffords a few years ago. some tragic things can happen from people on the end of both spectrums on the fringe s obviously. that is something we need to think about and supporters say it is wonderful to be heard, but civil ways to go about that. i think politicians should set an example. they should talk to each other civilly. they should talk to each other in the same room and not yell at each other.

like i said, politics has never been super civil, but a spectrum and we are edging toward one side. >> and in south carolina last night, the president criticized john mccain who is dying of brain cancer. accused of grandstanding. hit arnold schwarzenegger. stephen colbert called him a low-life and then jimmy fallon is a lost soul. now he is shifted those two issues he won on, immigration and trade. when it comes to immigration, he appears to like this fight as well. where are we headed? is there anything that could come out of the house or senate? >> last week, republicans were trying to find a compromise on a bill and trying to struggle to go narrow or broad. that is the issue for a while. what they should focus on and

what can pass and what can get support. not only from other republicans in congress, but also from the president. it is interesting because as long as we have been seeing this story line it has been the same thing. it is all focused on house republicans and how divergent their interests and needs and asks are and where they can marry that with president trump. president trump said late last week why are they trying? they should deal with it in the midterms. there is a powder keg with the images out last week with the children separated from families that is lighting a fire under congress to do something. constituents are demanding it. >> brenna williams live in d.c. thank you. see you in 20 minutes. it is primary day today in five states with votes in colorado, maryland, new york, oklahoma and utah. among the notable races, mitt romney is likely to win the seat along with mike kennedy. and in new york, michael grimm

is fighting to get his old seat back after doing time in federal prison for tax evasion. oklahoma voters with a ballot to make their's the 13th state to legalize medical marijuana. there are runoffs in mississippi and south carolina. the president was in south carolina last night to back incumbent governor henry mcmaster. he was force the in a runoff -- forced in a runoff with the businessman john warren. asian stocks falling after president trump's trade policy back fires on harley-davidson. the company shifting jobs overseas to avoid new tariffs on the eu. those are retaliation for trump's tariffs. the eu tariffs make the harley motorcycles $2,200 more expensive. instead of passing that along to customers, harley plans to move production to the eu. bad news for u.s. workers. trump has championed harley as an american manufacturer.

he met last year with executives. now he is tweeting his surprise that harley would be the first to wave the white flag on trade. on wall street, harley stock fell 6% proving the trade battles have consequences for u.s. companies. the dow fell more than 300 points led by tech stocks. so far, tech had been immune to trade fears. now the white house plans to block chinese investment and tech. targeting xi jinping's made in china's 2025 plan. that is a national strategy to dominate the industry. steve mnuchin denied china was a target, but said he would hit all countries trying to steal our technology. then peter navarro came out and contradicted mnuchin.

interesting because fueling the fire and fanning the flames kind of playing into the narrative that, you know, president trump had started to weave of people uncivil and people attacking trump supporters and trump supporters needing to become more coalescing more and backing each other more. it will start driving people further apart. now we have taken this uncivil discourse out of the rallies and out of the private spaces and out of the spaces where you are among like-minded people and taking it out against other people in public places so you might not be safe going into a restaurant. not physically safe, but not comfortable. i think sarah sanders should be able to regardless of who you support to go out in public and be safe and not get yelled at.

issues. we're talking about who is fighting who and what they're saying and what they're condoning and not condoning. how dirty a restaurant in wawrinka -- restaurant in virginia here and not talking about the issues. we have seen how rhetoric can turn nasty and physical with the congressional baseball practice and what happened to gabby giffords a few years ago. there is one thing about civil discourse and violence. we should never get anywhere close to that. politicians need to take responsibility because the things they say matter and constituents listen to the elected leaders. if president trump since the campaign, has been condoning punching that guy in the face, there is a fine line between rhetoric and action. >> what politics may think is performance art, honestly, you have people in videos reacting
