insulting john mccain to his face. people were not saying mean things other than at a debate. now it has shifted and it is inn civility in a -- incivility in a new arena. >> and one that reflecting the midwest polling over the long weekend from trump supporters. trump haters have not realized how much they helped with the c condesc condescencion. this idea that the president was elected to rock the boat and overthrow the establishment. every bit of anxiety of civility feeds into that narrative. this is why the president was elected. the more the mainstream and the status quo is up in arms about the behavior of trump and his

affiliates or that trump has started a wave of incivility in washington, his supporters love it, brenna. >> they do. people want to feel like they are heard. feel like somebody is fighting for them. fighting for their values. pushing back against people who may not agree with them. i think there's a dangerous line. we have seen this with the tragic congressional baseball shooting last year. we saw it with gabby giffords a few years ago. some tragic things can happen from people on the end of both spectrums on the fringe s obviously. that is something we need to think about and supporters say it is wonderful to be heard, but civil ways to go about that. i think politicians should set an example. they should talk to each other civilly. they should talk to each other in the same room and not yell at each other.

like i said, politics has never been super civil, but a spectrum and we are edging toward one side. >> and in south carolina last night, the president criticized john mccain who is dying of brain cancer. accused of grandstanding. hit arnold schwarzenegger. stephen colbert called him a low-life and then jimmy fallon is a lost soul. now he is shifted those two issues he won on, immigration and trade. when it comes to immigration, he appears to like this fight as well. where are we headed? is there anything that could come out of the house or senate? >> last week, republicans were trying to find a compromise on a bill and trying to struggle to go narrow or broad. that is the issue for a while. what they should focus on and

let's bring in will ripley. writing about a bruising fight ahead. what is mattis likely to be hearing? >> reporter: chinese president xi jinping told a group of american business men that china will punch back against the united states. $50 billion in tariffs due to kick in next month. we expect an announcement from the trump administration to block chinese investment in american technology citing national security. secretary mattis is here talking about trade and other issues. mixed with national security. he faces a tricky task. the trade situation is escalating this trade clash. some are calling it a trade war with the u.s. and china. he also needs to convince beijing to keep up the pressure on north korea. we know president xi jinping has met three times in the last few months with kim jong-un. their relationship seems to be warming as the tensions with trade and other issues with the united states are on the rise. he is always talking about the south china sea. china continuing to expand in

international waters putting what military analysts state aircra aircraft carriers. how does he convince china to work with u.s. and north korea and all of the other issues are bubbling? that is the challenge in beijing. >> perhaps they will talk about the lasers that u.s. pilots are encountering as well. will ripley, thank you. breaking overnight. a dozen people shot in chicago in seven incidents. victims include an 11-year-old boy and five teenagers. one person died. the violence comes after three people were killed in at least 36 people injured by gunfire this weekend. chicago had seen a drop in violent crime, but a spike since the weather warmed up. good samaritans rescuing a group stranded on the body off the coast of ft. lauderdale. six people were on board monday and one person almost went overboard trying to get on the

rescue boat. >> all of the people were on the bow. i spun around and came up alongside the boat. it went from smoke to fire within three to four minutes. it was ridiculous. >> grateful. lots of thank yous from them. including the captain and crew. we had to help out and do our jobs. not a bad day. we also caught fish. >> the fire started in the engine room. ft. lauderdale fire arrived at the scene and tried to rescue the boat, but it sank. the pawnee fire is 5% contained in california. 22 structures have been destroyed. flames are threatening 600 more structures. mandatory evacuations are under the entire spring valley area. the fires have blackened 440,000 acres. a police dog in chicago helped sniff out more than $10 million of marijuana. it all started with the traffic
