did paul manafort lie to robert mueller? if he did, why? some say the former trump campaign chairman lied more more than a year. the questions swirled around manafort for more than a year. >> what is the story on the trump tower meeting with russians who claimed to have incriminating information about hillary clinton? we may never her manafort testify about any of it. cnn's jessica schneider has more from washington. >> reporter: christine and dave, the latest question after the filing, what did paul manafort lie about? the special counsel saying he lied on a number of matters. they will not disclose until they file a sentencing submission with the court later. paul manafort has been working with mueller's attorney after pleading guilty to two charges. that plea was in september. on top of that guilty plea, paul

manafort was found guilty by the virginia jury in august. now the special counsel is saying no more talks or opportunity to cooperate. they are ready for a federal judge to sentence manafort. manafort's attorneys responded. they believe manafort was truthful and does not agree he breached any agreement. for now, the special prosecutor's team is saying go ahead with the sentencing of paul manafort. christine and dave. >> thank you. roger stone associate jerome corsi refusing to sign the plea deal. mueller thought to be interested in corsi because he was known to be the back channel to wikileaks. stone's association with the team was life being interrogated as a p.o.w. in the korean war. he said they can put me in prison the rest of my life. i will not sign a lie.

president trump offering a muted response to the escalating tensions with russia and ukraine. russia seized three ukrainian navy ships in the key waterway. other leaders condemned the move as well as nikki haley and mike pompeo. this was the president's response. >> i'm not happy about it at all. not at all. we let our position be known. we do not like what's happening. we don't like what's happening. hopefully it will get straightened out. >> we have cnn's nick paton walsh live in ukraine. nick, good morning. >> reporter: dave, we are hours away from ukrainian response to the crisis which introduces marshall law in the country for ten days. this kicks in at 9:00 local time tomorrow. this is what is kicking off the russian intentions.

moscow is trying to work out what it can get away with over the clash in the kerch strait as the azov sea closed off which is shared by ukraine and russia for access. dave, we have seen russia's proxies here continuing over the past years a war with ukrainian forces where people die on a regular basis. what is troubling on what happened recently at kerch strait, this was russian forces, not proxies, but taking on and imposing their will on the ukrainian navy. taking ukrainian soldiers hostage. much like the invasion of crimea and invasion of the east condemned russia's action. secretary of state mike pompeo calling this aggressive and german chancellor angela merkel calling this an effort to work out what happened there. the difference is president

trump. is he willing to take the hard line that obama took with sanctions trying to keep russia in check here or has the global analyst changed? dave? >> the president will have lunch with the secretary of defense today. likely an update. nick, thank you. president trump is shutting the door on the temporary deal with the ongoing trade war with china. this is days ahead of the g20 summit in argentina. the president said in an interview it is highly iunlikel he would accept a deal with xi jinping over chinese goods to 25% in january. those tariffs are 10%. they are set to increase to 25% in january. president trump said if we don't make a deal, i'll put the $267 billion additional on. that means even going further

and adding more tariffs. adding that tariff level could be 10% or 25%. trump said that could include tariffs on apple products imported from china, including iphones and laptops. the president wasn't in any rush to end the trade war. he was willing to more than double the tariffs it placed on chinese goods. what is unclear to me is if this is a negotiating tactic days before he meets with the chinese president to show that it looks like the americans have a lot of leverage here. they really do. another point i make is the president is talking about the tariffs where the chinese government is paying billions. >> it is money going into the treasury. >> it is from the american companies who import the products. there's a difference. ahead, taco bell has moved back into the london market after two decades. so is beer the trick to booming
