i'm dave briggs. thursday, july 18th, 5 a.m. in the east. it's almost friday as we say. we begin with puerto rico and protests raging through the night there in puerto rico as demonstrators call for the immediate resignation of governor ricardo rosaio. they fired tear gas into the crowd. some of puerto rico's biggest stars, including ricky martin, rallied the crowds for a fifth day in the row. their anger here. they're, quote, here to have their back. we have the latest. >> reporter: jessica, dave, i have seen anger, i have seen frustration, i have seen tension here. we actually made our way to the barricade in front of the governor's mansion where we saw a standoff between protesters that were clearly very angry and

police that are blocking the governor's mansion. for his part, the governor says he will not step down. i want to tell you that as i've spoken with protesters that have had a week of fbi making arrests in corruption scandals involving former administration officials of leaked caps, i want you to hear what else people told me as to why exactly they are marching on these streets. >> this is about the dignity of our country, you know, of puerto rico. this is about we being tired of the same stuff happening again, of this government, of the government that have passed through this country. so it's about the indignation of our country, you know? the indignation, the -- finally this country getting on his foot and standing up against the

strong man. >> reporter: many people we've talked to say they see themselves in these chats reflected in the insult and they say enough. they want change. they want to rid the island of corruption and they worry that what could come of this is vulnerability among those who are already vulnerable. that possibly aid will not come to the island for those who are still rebuilding after hurricane maria. the governor for his part says he will not step down. jessica? dave? >> thanks so much. racial tropes now a concrete theme in president trump's 2020 re-election campaign. trump intensified his attacks on four progressive democratic congress women at a fiery campaign rally. he painted the so-called squad as the face of the entire democratic party. even just the mention of their names inflamed that crowd. if you want to gouge that

i was in the united states' army for 12 years. i served two tours in korea, two tours in iraq. and if we were in a stressful environment or had a stressful time, or we just wanted to go talk, hey, we'd say, hey let's go smoke a cigarette. and that would be the office. you know, wherever that office was, be it next to a trash can or a light pole. now that we have our cigarettes, we're in meeting. interestingly enough, the further i got away from the military, i'd- i started noticing. you know, being in corporate environments and it not being as prevalent, being around smokers. so i would tend to be- become the odd man out.

claiming jury misconduct. a deceased vietnam veteran with no family receiving an incredible sendoff. wayne wilson's friends put a call out for people to attend his funeral. they expected an extra 10 to 15 people to show up. instead, you see the crowd there, about 3,000 people turned up. some driven from tennessee, iowa to pay their respects. full military honors were performed for wilson who died in may at the age of 67. everyone loves a refreshing drink on a hot summer day, but an 11-year-old boy in utah came up with an ingenius new twist. his sign advertising ice cold beer. that got the attention of neighbors who then alerted police. when the police arrived they saw the boy selling ice cold rootbeer. he wrote the word root on his sign really, really small. they were so impressed they bought a couple of beers from the young boy. business is booming. the rootbeer stand will stay open until the school year
