effect. and serious back injuries for actor kevin heart. his car rolling down an embankment. welcome everyone to our viewers in the united states and around the world. this is a special holiday edition of early start. i'm amara walker. >> i'm dave briggs. monday, september 2nd. 4 a.m. breaking news. hurricane dorian unleashing a category 5 storm on the bahamas. gusts over 200 miles an hour. sustained winds now at 175. the hurricane made landfall on grand bahama eiland -- island overnight. the most powerful ever to hit the bahamas. hurricane watches in the state of florida now extending all the way north to the georgia border, and a storm surge watch has also been expanded to the

same regions. evacuation orders now in effect for much of florida, georgia, and south carolina. coastal areas. officials calling that inconvenience a small price to pay for the damage dorian might deliver. >> think. worst case scenario. this is a storm of storms. don't know where it's going to hit. don't know what the impact is going to be, but it's not going to be good. >> north carolina has to take this seriously. be ready. the storm might look far away, but it's already kicking up dangerous surf and rip tides at our coast. >> and with these announcements we know that we cannot make everybody happy, but we believe that we can keep everyone alive. >> the atlantic basin has now experienced a category 5 hurricane four years in a row. that is unprecedented since reliable data began in the 1960s. dorian will be crawling along at

3 miles per hour over the next two days, a walking pace for most of us. so the worst of the storm is clearly far from over. ivan cabrera tracking the system live from the cnn center. ivan, good morning. >> hey, good morning, guys. good morning. >> it basically has stalled. we're getting an update from the national hurricane center. one, it is basically moving, well, slower than we can walk, right? this is basically stalled out. 165 maur 165-mile-an-hour winds. six hours ago the storm was stronger at 185. it's beginning to replace its eye. they do this, and when that happens they wobble. when they interact with land masses they wobble a bit. this 165, that is not going to continue. it may ramp back up. also, a six-hour loop. i'll show you the radar. fascinating stuff coming in from miami.

120 miles, cat 5 hurricane just 120 miles from south florida. we'll talk about the impacts. six hour loop. moving, moving, moving and then it just stops. this is just devastating for grand bahama because basically now they're going to be into this 165, 175-mile-an-hour winds for basically 12 to 24 hours. that is going to continue. hurricane force winds extend out 45 miles. 165 don't extend that far. that's going to be right around the ring. that is what we have though is catastrophic winds across the region. that is right on top of grand bahama island. could not have pictured a worst case scenario. you mentioned the hurricane warnings in effect from boca raton and then we have the watches, warnings and the watch in 48 hours. we'll get to the carolinas. look at how slow this is going to move.

monday, 8 p.m. hasn't moved all that much. by tuesday 8 p.m. just east of mel bubourne melbourne. continuing to basically threaten florida but also now begin to move to the north. what is critical here is that it has not gun its northern movement and until that happens, florida is going to continue to be in the bigger threat as far as the impacts. the models still have the center of the storm east of florida. remember, the hurricane force winds extend out and the tropical force winds extend out 165. this is something we have to watch for today. that turn is going to be crucial. it's going to impact as far as how much storm surge we get. wind damage and the rainfall that can be 15 to 20 miles off shore and 4 to 8 off shore. we're talking about significant impacts across florida. more so than we're expecting. potential landfall thursday across the carolinas. dorian continues to throw pretty

much everything that we can talk about here with a tropical cyclone. the second strongest in the atlantic ever since 1980, that was 190. >> very concerning that it's such a slow-moving storm. thank you very much. catastrophic damage is already being reported in the bahamas. >> everyone pray for us please. please pray for us. >> the first areas hit by the storm are devastated. dorian ripped the roof off this home. and storm surges are still expected to lift water levels as high as 18 to 23 feet above normal producing large and destructive waves. patrick ottman live from freeport, bahamas. let's talk more about what's going on where you are and these

storm surges. >> reporter: yes. the storm surges are a major concern but let's talk about the wind first. we are being lashed in freeport by dorian's wind all night long in the dark because power is out here. it sounds like a jet engine, just screaming winds that pick up but never really go away. they die down a bit, but they never really go away. keep getting stronger and stronger. people are in their homes, no power, no information, no tv. maybe they're listening to radio. it has to be terrifying. nobody here in the bahamas has ever experienced a storm like this because they've never had a storm like this. and a real concern though is later on with the storm surge, talking about a storm surge exceeding 20 feet. the highest point on this island is 30 feet. much of this island by the end of today, by tomorrow will be

under water. >> patrick ottman, appreciate it. thanks so much. an eerie calm in coastal florida as dorian moves forward. evacuation orders in effect for palm beach, martin, saint lucy, indian river, voe lulusia. following the path of hurricane matthew from 2016. martin county sheriffs warning a near miss or devastation, both possibilities. >> we r within 20 miles of an apocalyptic hurricane coming to shore on the coast. if it does what the models are predicting, we will be okay. if on the other hand the storm wobbles 20 miles to 30 miles off

its current path, and that's not a lot, we will have landfall. >> a steady stream of power trucks is arriving in florida. they are being stationed all over the state. at noon today orlando, melbourne international airport and ft. lauderdale will suspend commercial flights and close their terminals. miami-dade schools will close tuesday ahead of the storm. they will close tuesday and wednesday. new details overnight as texas comes to grips with its second mass shooting in just a month. "the new york times" reporting the odessa shooter had been fired from his trucking job hours before killing seven strangers miles apart. 22 others were injured. after losing track of the gun man saturday, police were able to stop him by engineering a collision with the vehicle he hijacked. he was then killed in a shootout. they still don't have a motive.

>> his face isn't the only one you should remember. it's faces like this one. 17-month-old anderson davis, she is one of the injured. her mom said she will have surgery to remove shrapnel from the chest and her mom texting texas governor. toddlers are funny, they can get shot and want to run around and want to play. we are thanking god for that. cnn's ryan young in odessa, texas. >> reporter: dave and amber, still so many questions about this shooting. it started saturday around 3:17. since then investigators are working on this. a 36-year-old white male was getting pulled over for not making a proper lane change. officers started walking up to that car he started using an ar-15 to fire towards officers. from there it was an all out spree in terms of gunshots and police trying to track this man

down. according to authorities, he met up with a postal worker, car jacked her, shot and killed her before being shot and core r5ra by police. we saw at a candlelight vigil, hundreds of people coming together to pay their respects to the fallen. 7 people dead and 22 injured. so many questions not only about the shooter's motive but how this community moves forward. we talked to two young ladies who lost a friend during the shooting. >> even though she's gone, she's still here in my heart. and this is all for her so people could know who she was because she was everything. and everyone misses leilah hernandez. i just think that she needs to -- in my mind i want her to come back but she can't. i don't know, i just pray to god

that she's okay wherever she is doing well and we'll see her again. >> reporter: we do know fbi investigators executed a warrant at the suspect's house. what we figured out there, they believe he was a truck driver. he's been arrested before for minor offenses. nothing before like what was created here. what we've heard a lot about is how this community plans to step forward. how do we stop this cycle of violence? dave and amara? >> ryan young there. congress back a week from today. action is doubtful at this point. we shall see. ahead, another escalation in the trade wars. new tariffs take effect between the u.s. and china. it may end up costing consumers dearly.

15% tariffs kicked in on sunday. popular items like bed sheets, sneakers, sweaters, power tools, items people will be looking for after a hurricane are on the list. meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables also targeted. 75 billion worth of u.s. goods also took effect on sunday. the world has already lived through two rounds of tariff increases and chinese retaliation. these tariffs along with another round that has been delayed are different because they directly target popular shelving items. high-level talks with china are still planned for later this month. a dangerous escalation in violence along the israel lebanese border. the iran-backed military group hezbollah attacked an israeli military base. the israelis retaliated.

this is the first firestorm in five years. it was over pretty quickly. how high are tensions right now? >> reporter: well, the israeli military, the idf, remains on high alert. we have heard a drone over our heads. including now. we've heard this all morning. other than that, it is a different story than 18 hours ago. 4:15 hezbollah and lebanon fired a missile. it hit a military building and a military vehicle. the military says there were no injuries in those strikes. israel responded by firing about 100 artillery shells from here into lebanon targeting where they say that anti-tank fire came from as well as military fire in southern lebanon. the idf also used what they termed very limited helicopter

strikes. as quickly as it started, it was over. two hours after it was fired the israeli military lifted all restrictions in northern israel. that's a strong indication that they expect this round of fighting to be over. the military remains on high alert. we've seen people here mostly return to their normal routine. cars in the street, and even some of the soldiers appear to be more relaxed. this is the sharpest exchange of fire since the beginning of 2015. that involved deaths on both sides but was quickly limited in scope and it seems this will at least for now has been limited. >> oren lieberman, thanks so much. we are keeping a close eye on hurricane dorian pounding the bahamas as we speak. the southeast is next. and she's stuck in the hospital battling cancer, but this 16-year-old got a very special visit. we'll show you who.

we are monitoring hurricane dorian. the storm is currently pummelling the bahamas and heading towards the u.s. dorian's wind speeds have slowed slightly to 170 miles per hour with gusts over 200. the storm already causing major damage after making landfall on grand bahama island overnight as a category 5 hurricane. right now several hurricane watches and warnings are in effect extending from florida all the way to the georgia border. much of florida, georgia, and the south carolina coast lines

i have to tell you, we may not be able to get a live shot from patrick ottman, but if we do, it will be incredible. he will experience the 165-mile-an-hour winds which is where we are right now. gusts to 200. that wind is going to come from the north and then it's going to go calm. you can see the stars in the sky from that center of the eye zero in and then on the back side, 180, 165 at this point-mile-an-hour winds coming from the other direction. so no matter how you slice it with an island, you're going to get a storm surgeon the other side. this is not as populated as freeport is. 20, 25 folks here. there you see the eye wall beginning to approach freeport. that will happen within the next hour or so hopefully because it's moving so slowly that once it does get there, they're going to be in that wind for hours and hours and that is going to be a disaster. some of the pictures we showed you there, by the way, that is going to be nothing compared to i think once we get ariels from

up above. once this is done with the bahamas, it will be devastating to see that. there's the center. 45 miles out. we have hurricane warnings that are now in effect from boca raton down to cape canaveral. 24 hours here, 48 hours to the north and then tropical storm watch in effect for central florida, disney world might be seeing some tropical storm force winds by the time we get into the middle of the week. this is a slow mover. what is horrible for the bahamas may be good for florida. the longer this waits for the steering currents to pull it to the north, the further away from florida it is. if this was rolling through west of 15 or 20, we'd be in a heap of trouble here. once it does make that turn, it is still going to be close enough, a cat 4, to provide us with significant impacts along the coast. we're talking storm surge. we're talking significant wind damage and also towards the

destructive waves. patrick ottman is live for us in freeport, bahamas, with the latest. patrick? >> reporter: good morning, again. grand bahamas getting lashed by the hurricane strength winds all night long. this is what we have heard in the dark here because much if not all of this island is without power. it is a haunting and frankly terrifying scene. i'm just going to step out of the way. cameraman is going to show you how the hurricane is whipping around the very tall pines. these are pine trees that survived hurricane matthew three years ago. that was a cat kbor ri-- cat at the -- category 4 storm. it has stalled out over us. we have yet to see the worst that dorian is going to do to this island. certainly when the sun comes up we will have a better sense of

damage. it is absolutely impossible, guys, to go out and see what has taken place here because the winds are so strong. we are very concerned about that storm surge. over 20 feet we are expected to see here, 20 feet of storm surge probably by the end of today. it's a terrifying thought because there are islands around us where people live that are just about sea level. there are people there who said they were going to brave out the storms on the islands. people here on coastal parts of the island, they said they were going to stay in their homes that they had done in previous hurricanes. so the highest point on this island is only 30 feet. the highest point of land. we're luckily on the third story of a building here, but for so many people in the coming hours on this island, their houses, their possessions, their lives are going to be underwater. back to you guys. >> patrick ottman for us in freeport. stay safe, my friend.

suspend commercial flights and close the terminals. >> joining us on the phone, palm beach county florida mayor mack bernard. appreciate you joining us. the track of the storm remains unclear. we don't know where exactly -- you know, where it's going to make landfall. despite that, are people heeding the warnings? as we just said, there is a mandatory evacuation for your area, have you seen people leaving? >> we have not seen people leaving in palm beach county, but we are making sure all of the residents are adhering to some of the concerns we are concerned about. this hurricane is one of the most dangerous hurricanes that can impact the state of florida so we've issued a mandatory evacuation to the mobile homes and barrier islands. we want some of the residents to not get on the road because around noon this county will

change and any change in this hurricane can impact the residents. >> we understand your airport will be closing. do you prepare as if this is worst case scenario or this will take that hard right turn? what do you prepare for at this point? >> we prepare for the worst case scenario because this storm heading towards west palm beach and with it slowing down and we have no idea what it's going to do for hours as it slows down, and because of that we have to prepare for the worst case scenario, which means that, you know, we want all of our residents to be prepared and all of our residents have made their pre-storm preparation and we want the residents to have their water, their food, their medication, we have our shelters open and we still have plenty of spaces but this is a worst case scenario. >> i want to clarify what you were saying, mr. mayor. you don't want people to hit the road just yet. can you clarify that? again, from what i understand,

there are evacuation orders in effect along the coastal area in palm beach, correct? >> remember, this storm is heading north so we don't want residents to get on the highway and head north on i-95 and get stuck on the road. so if any of the residents want to -- we want the residents to shelter in place. if they have substandard homes, we have shelters that are now open. we have nine shelters open. we have a special needs shelter in palm beach county that's open. i believe we have over 200 residents in there now. if any resident wants to leave, we prefer them to head west instead of heading north. we don't want them to get stuck on the road. >> drive straight inland west. not north. some estimated 7 feet surge will hit west palm beach and florida. how do you prepare for that? >> that's the reason why we've had the evacuation orders.

we're working with all of our county officials to be prepared and, you know, we want our residents to know that this is a major storm. please, if you know you have substandard homes, you have a mobile home or live in the barrier islands, please evacuate. adhere to all of the orders we're asking you because this storm is dangerous. >> and just quickly in terms of closures, school closures, airport operations, what's the latest on that? >> our school is closed for tuesday and this is monday, which is labor day. the airport is closed. so most of these functions that are needed are basically closed. what we want is for our residents to really stay home today because i drove on i-95 this morning and there's a lot of -- the road is slippery and we don't want to have any accidents and so that's the reason why we want our residents to stay home. this storm is dangerous and any

which hit a building in this ba tallian headquarter. another of which hit a military vehicle a quarter of a mile away from where we were standing. there were no injuries. israel responded with about 100 artillery missiles. they also say they had very limited held copter strikes as they carried out their retaliation. just as quickly as it started, it seemed it was over. two hours later israel said all restrictions on civilians was liftnd and that is a very strong indication it's coming to a close. amara, you mentioned early 2015. that was the last cross border exchange. that was violent. just as that was limited in scope and depth, it seems for now so is this. >> oren lieberman, live for us.
