tell us about the original reunion. >> in november of 2007, james called me and said let's get-togethers and play with some of our old friends and we had such a great time. >> like carole said, it felt so good we decided to take it on the road. ♪ ♪ [ cheers ]

♪ yes, and i feel fine ♪ [ applause ] >> carole is an interesting case because she worked as a songwriter for ten years before i met her and she had an entire career as a major songwriter and with a couple other people, too. >> in all cases, the music came through me and when it was somebody else's lyric, it integrated. when it was my music and lyrics together, sometimes it would all together pop out of me. >> i asked her to be part of my band. i wanted her to play piano in my band but of course, she was also this major musical source that she'd written all of these amazing tunes, some of which were my favorite songs so i felt

this thing that carole should be singing her own songs. >> i remember you pushed me out on stage and i was your side man and that's all i ever wanted to be and then you said to me, i want you to go on stage tonight and sing your song. whoa, wait, what? no, no, i can't do it. no, you're going to do it. no, don't worry. and you gave me the loveliest introduction and you said, okay, everybody, i'm going to turn the stage over to carole king, you-all know her as a songwriter. she wrote blah, blah, blah and he listed the whole thing and what he did was he made me preloved because everybody knew all those songs. >> i put a small band together to make this first album. we had danny, james' first friend and also the person that introduced me to james in the first place i found a drummer called russ who my first played at a john stewart rehearsal. >> the way james accompanied himself on the guitar and sang, never heard anything like it. >> we found the bass player. >> his song was amazing and demeanor was unlike most cats i knew at that time. >> finally, i'd met one of my idles, one of the greatest s songwriters of all time carole king. i said to carole, about to make this record with james taylor i wonder if you would consider playing piano on it. would you come to my house and meet him? >> carole said yes. >> i'm down at his house hooking up and we're talking about doing

this show. >> which consequently changed my life for all intensive purposes. >> i guess i didn't realize how exciting it was at the time it is in retro spect saying how exciting and we were being young and making music. >> this is one of the things i wish i was aware my life was changing at that moment because i might have absorbed it in a different way. it was a moment where everything goes boom and matches up and we all just took off with them.

if this was the last thing i did in my entire career, i'm good with that. >> the fact they play and sing together and like each other and g genuinely great friends and collaborators is unique and an event you don't want to miss. >> even if we're not going to be in the tribudor, we can't lose this closeness that we feel on stage. we do it for each other but what they're seeing is us having a great time together. >> challenge was to figure out how to do an intimate show and really large arena. >> we wish everybody could be close in. one way to do that is to perform in and around. >> what we came up with was the idea that we would basically have a club in an arena, also rotating slowly, stage rotates while we've designed the show to be as close and intimate as possible and to play to everybody in the room.
