3:00 pm
country get -- great. that's what i want to do. my children and my executives will run my company. i won't even think about it. i won't even care about it. i have some of the great assets in the world. i have the greatest assets in the world. best locations in manhattan. trump tower, 57th and. fifth. it will be used to make our then makech again and it great. we can't make it great unless we make it rich. we owed $19 trillion. my whole focus will be this country and making it great. >> donald trump from earlier today. we go live back to the fair wear bernie sanders is on the des

moines register soapbox. sanders: three-and-a-half months ago we just began the campaign, and everybody said this campaign was a joke. american people are prepared to take on the economic and political establishment of america. months havehalf gone by, we have had huge crowds all over america. law, new hampshire, california, oregon, you name it. why, whateople ask me i tell them is the american people are saying enough is enough.
3:02 pm
this country belongs to all of us, not just a handful of billionaires. before i get going, i want to to someappy birthday institution, it is called social security, 80 years old. clear, virtually all of the republican candidates in one form or another wants to cut social security. are not going to let them do that. when we have seniors in this atntry trying to get by $13,000 per year, disabled
3:03 pm
people unable to put enough food on the table, we are not going to cut social security, we are going to expand social security. and we are going to do that by lifting the cap on taxable income. in america today, what we are seeing is the disappearance of the great middle class. ourre seeing millions of brothers and sisters in iowa, vermont, all over this country. three jobs -- jobs to put food on the table. all of the new wealth, going to the top 1%. that is going to change.
3:04 pm
we need an economy that works for working people, not a handful of billionaires. let me tell you some about this campaign finance system that we have today. it is a corrupt system. citizens united will go down in history as one of the worst decisions made by supreme court. let me repeat a promise that i have made to either crowd. throughominee of mine the supreme court will get that position unless he or she pledges to make certain that citizens united is overturned.
3:05 pm
and when we try to understand why it is that so many of our family members, our friends, our two orrs are working in three jobs in order to cobble together an income and some health care, the answer is wages in our country for many people are much too low. and that is why we have to $7.25 minimum wage -- we have to raise the minimum wage to a living wage, $15 an hour.
3:06 pm
what we understand also is when we live in a competitive global bestmy we need the workforce possible. it makes no sense to me that we have hundreds of thousands of bright qualified young people who want to get a higher education and are unable to do so because their family ability. that is why i have introduced legislation and will fight for as president of the united states to make sure every public college and university in america is tuition free. [applause] withve also got to deal our outrageously high student that.
3:07 pm
millions of americans young and not so young who are paying 10% on their student debt. homeu can refinance your at 2% or 3% today you should not be paying 10%. alsohe government should not be profiteering on student debt held by working-class families. and when we talk about raising the minimum wage to a living wage, we have to talk about pay, equity, lives in workers. women cannot continue to earn $.78 on the dollar.
3:08 pm
many of my republican colleagues talk about family values. their values are that a woman should not have the right to control her own body, i disagree . [applause] air values are that our -- their values are that our gay brothers and sisters should not be able to get married or enjoy all the benefits of american citizenship, i disagree. i have been married 27 years. i have four kids, seven grandchildren. my family values are that the -- thestates has to
3:09 pm
international investment of being the only major country on earth that doesn't guarantee pay and medical leave. when a woman has a baby in this country, regardless of her toome, she should be able spend three months with that baby, getting to know that baby, love that baby. when we talk about american where, when we talk about we want to go as a country, i want to end the absurdity of the united states being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee health care to all people as a right.
3:10 pm
that is why i strongly support a medicare for all single-payer program. when we talk about our , asonsibilities as adults parents, we have a moral responsibility to mixture we leave this planet -- to make sure we leave this planet in a way that is habitable for our kids and grandchildren. the debate is over. real,e change is a climate change is caused by could -- human activity, climate change is already causing devastating
3:11 pm
problems in our country and around the world. states must do and what i will do as president world, working with other countries to transform our energy system. i apologize, we left the helicopter at home. it's in the garage, we forgot to bring it. job is to make sure that we join the rest of the world, major countries around the world , in guaranteeing health care to and child as an, right of citizenship. it makes no sense to me that
3:12 pm
despite the gains of the affordable care act and we continue to have 35 million people uninsured, and many of you are underinsured. high deductibles, high copayments. of that we end up spending almost twice as much per capita on health care as do the people of any other country. that is wrong, that has got to change. let me close on one issue that i know a lot of people are thinking about. the truth is in america we have made real progress in terms of fighting racism over the years. want to thank the people of iowa for their courage in voting for obama in 2008. what you showed is a state that
3:13 pm
is mostly white can go beyond the color of the candidates skin . thank you, iowa. [applause] papers,ho reads the anyone who looks at the tv understands that we still have a long way to go. understand that it is on acceptable that african-americans can get taken out of their cars, thrown to the ground, assaulted, and thrown into jail. that is not what this country is supposed to be about. so you are looking at a candidate who was elected president, who will do everything that he can to end
3:14 pm
the stain of institutional racism in this country, and bring about a criminal justice reform. i work with our police department and the truth is most cops have very difficult jobs. they do the right thing. a police officer or any other public official breaks the law, that officer must be held accountable. today in america, we have more than any other country on earth, including china. we have a disproportionate number of people in jail who are black or hispanic. we have a lot of work to do.
3:15 pm
making billions -- we are going to end this minimum sentencing by which too many people have criminal records. when people go to jail, i want to make sure there is a pathway for them out of jail. if people leave jail without money, without jobs, without education, without mental health issues being dealt with, the likelihood is we are going to end back in jail and that is pretty crazy. heavily ins invest
3:16 pm
jobs and education, not jail and incarceration. let me just conclude by telling you one thing that no husband candidate will tell you, i need win here and i. i appreciate the support of so many people. if we are going to transform america, if we are going to have a government that represents and not largees campaign bonuses we need a political revolution in this country. [applause] people tollions of stand up and make it clear to the billionaire class they
3:17 pm
cannot have it all. they are going to start paying their fair share of practice. not going to continue to ship out jobs to china and elsewhere. to make all of that have been we need a strong grassroots political movement from vermont to california, and significantly here in iowa. toelcome and urge all of you join me in helping to make a political revolution that transforms america and creates a government that works for all of us and not just a handful. thank you all very much. [applause]
