Cambria hotel workers still on strike after nearly 11 weeks:
On Labor Express Radio we have been reporting on both the Chicago hotel strike and the nationwide Marriott Hotels strikes since they were launched last September. The good news so far is that all but one of the Chicago hotel strikes has ended with new contracts that meet the union’s key demands. Likewise, the Marriott Hotel strikes in Boston, San Jose and Oakland have ended with contact gains as well. However, strikes are still ongoing at Marriott Hotels in San Francisco and Hawaii. And in Chicago, the Cambria hotel is the last hold out with the strike there entering it’s 11th week soon. Cambria management has agreed to offer hotel workers year round health care, one of the union's primary demands, but unlike at every other hotel that has signed a new contract, the Cambria is demanding an increased workload for its housekeeping staff. The current workloads already put a great strain on the housekeepers. A recent study conducted by UNITE-HERE Local 1 found that the vast majority of housekeepers have suffered injuries from their heavy workloads. You can read the results of that study here… https://www.unitehere1.org/wp-content/uploads/CambriaHousekeeperPain.pdf
Workers also know that a higher workload means cutbacks and layoffs of housekeeping staff, so they are refusing to give in to Cambria managements demands.
Labor Express Radio reporter, Marnie Goodfriend spoke with two Cambria hotel workers earlier this week. Yolanda is a housekeeper and Dan is a bartender. You can listen to Marnie’s interview here.
