The Committee on Evaluation of Trends in Agricultural Research at the Doctoral and Postdoctoral Level was established to analyze issues related to the next generation of agricultural scientists. This report contains the findings, conclusions, and recommendations regarding the status and future needs of agricultural scientists. This report focuses on the number and quality of doctoral scientists working in agricultural, food, and related sciences. Additional topics discussed include: (1) new employment opportunities in food, fiber, and other agricultural industries; (2) the profile of agricultural scientists; and (3) the committee's projections of the future demand for agricultural research scientists. Appendices include statistics profiling agricultural scientists, a list of data sources, and a coded list of specialties of agricultural scientists. (CW)
