harmeet, always great to have you back on. there is blowback against the president pressuring the attorney general to appoint a special prosecutor on the biden laptop email story before the election. critics say that's wrong. frank luntz, an election watcher. says it is a mistake only campaign on the bidens. other people say the trump campaign is not doing that. when you heard the headlines, what was your first response, what was your reaction? >> first i would say that the president is by far not only campaigning on the bidens, i would say it is not being mentioned enough. the president talking about his record. this is part of a referendum on his record. he has done a tremendous job growing our economy but the biden story cannot be ignored. it is not just because of the implications for the next four years. crimes may have been committed in our country by the biden family and by his son pedaling access for whatever his reasons were. we know all the state, foreign

oligarchs, kleptocrats you mentioned from other countries this is sell being access to our country and the white house. that could be a crime so that needs to be investigated for the integrity of our entire system of government. elizabeth: you know the debate is coming thursday night. the trump campaign objected about the mute button. they're objecting that the debate is not traditionally customarilily about foreign policy. it will be about national security. senators ron johnson and senator lankford said that the fbi should debrief the senate on the national security concerns over the biden story. how should the president handle this at the debate on thursday night? >> the way that the entire debate situation has evolved this year has been very disappointing and i say that as a republican. i know republicans agreed to this format but never again should we agree to let the left and liberal reporters control this process. cutting off the president potentially which is what the democrats apparently want to do during this important last

debate is terrible. we need to be hearing from each of these candidates what their vision is. so in terms of that question regarding briefing the senate, yes, the fact that a person close to the vice president was selling access to the white house and in fact we see photographs with some very shady foreign characters with joe biden in different locations, we need to get to the bottom of that, in terms of disinformation, yes, i am concerned that foreign governments are targeting family members of the, of the bidens, the potential future president. all of that needs to be briefed. if the debate moderator will not ask the important questions on everybody's mind, i am confident that the president is going to throw those questions and put joe biden to the test. even though there is two minute clock. there will be six minutes of unclocked, uninterrupted discussion time where they hopefully can exchange views during each segment. i'm pretty sure the president will ask some hard questions.

elizabeth: yeah. we were expecting the president is going to say that voters have a right to know how, whether or not joe biden was ever compromised by the business dealings involving his family. it is not just his son hunter but his brothers and others too. we'll dig into that in the next segment. when you saw that more than 50 former intelligence officials who worked for four presidents including under president trump, when you saw they signed a letter this looks like russian disinformation but then they admitted they don't know for sure, can't say either way, the question, anonymously sourced stories saying this is russian disinformation when there is no proof of that yet, when the biden campaign has not denied the laptop. they have not yet to deny the validity of the emails, when you see this coming from letter, signed by obama era intelligence officials like john brennan and james clapper, when you see those stories out there do you

that there is any way the media will push further on this story to get to the bottom of what happened with joe biden and his family? >> well, no, i don't expect the media to push harder because the media gets its talking points from the very people that betrayed their oath to our country. i say that not lightly but the very same people are saying oh, my god russian disinformation, they said the same thing about president trump, they said it knowing that was not true. why would he be surprised they are saying this? i'm just a simple country lawyer, elizabeth in a courtroom, somebody coming with an affidavit signed like 50 people with no personal knowledge, the judge would throw that out as totally incompetent. it is not evidence of anything other than their bias and their support for joe biden and willingness to do it by any means necessary. but the most shocking thing here is how big tech has suppressed truthful reporting on this very scandal and it may be too late for this senate and this congress to do anything about it

boy, what a missed opportunity if we're not able to hold them accountable for lying to the american people that way. elizabeth: well, the question is, you know, the media including "the new york times," "washington post," "the wall street journal," they have all been unable to verify the "new york post" report on hunter biden's overseas influence peddling. the question how the social media handled that story but should journalists stop digging once they hear it is russian disinformation? should you keep going? because russian disinformation too is a crime. shouldn't people try to get to the bottom of it just as journals tried to get to the bottom of the steele dossier and the general flynn story? >> absolutely. of course they should. in our proud history in the united states, i'm a first amendment lawyer, journalists have been responsible for getting to the bottom of some major coverups in our country, major crimes, pollution issues, abuse of children, abuse of

human beings in trafficking. why are they abdicating their responsibility and their tremendous power in this critical time? shouldn't we all like to know if there are members of any political family in the united states who have been compromised? if there are politicians running for the highest office in our country who have taken bribes? that is the allegation. not to put a fine point on it. has joe biden to benefit his son or himself financially compromised his position? let thugs or criminals or crooks into the white house or into his orbit, done favors for them almost certainly seems to be the case for the burisma situation? people need to know one way or the other. if were a good reporter you wanted joe biden to win you would help him out and assuring that the emails are fake. that the people who are on them did not actually send them or receive them but they're not doing their jobs. they're directly suppressing all of this information. by doing so they're destroying their credibility as supposed

♪. elizabeth: okay. let's welcome back to the show former independent counsel ken starr. ken, it is always great to have your perspectives and insight. when you saw that more than 50 former intelligence officials, it is great to see you. 50 former intelligence officials, more than 50 who worked for more than four presidents including president trump, you saw they signed a letter, the hunter biden story, laptop email story looks like russian disinformation, but they can't say either way, they don't have evidence of that, they don't have h know if the emails are fake, is this throwing accelerant on the story? what was your reaction on the story? >> my reaction it was a political act. it was not really an act of professionalism objective. let's analyze the documents. now let's look at the vice president's calendar. ah, there is something here that just doesn't seem right and it looks like it is russian disinformation. so i think it was an act in the

political campaign and they should be ashamed and they should simply say, look, let's find out. let's track it down. there are ways of doing that. let's get the job done. elizabeth: you know glen greenwald at the intercept, has been saying that the cia, nsa, are manipulating the american people, putting anonymous information, anonymously sourced information into stories saying this is russian disinformation when providing no proof of that. dni ratcliff says no proof of that. the conclusion where the mind comes to rest. it is russian disinformation, let's not look into that. let's continue to not verify the story. is that looks what is going on? >> it appears to me. don't bother me with the fact information. i see inconvenient facts or may be facts.

the call should be let's investigate, let's find out, is it authentic or is it not? as it was just said if it is disinformation, there are people committing crimes. certainly civil actions are appropriate but from what little i've seen, and we have not seen all that much, there are a lot of i would call it indicia of reliability. i'm not saying jump to a conclusion but there are certain indicators this should be taken seriously. instead of being dismissed out of hand. so i strongly disagree with the idea, well, it is russian disinformation. let's bury our heads in the sand. elizabeth: yeah, because if you don't dig into it, if you don't -- you know, if it is russian disinformation that's a crime. that is election medaling. that should be pursued. if you leave it hanging out there as russian disinformation and you just let it go at that, then you can disis in the story as unverified, unproven and

undercut it. we have obama officials john brennan, james clapper, they helped push the russian does say story. isn't this sort of the same thing? >> it looks like it could be very close to that and instead of again shouting we don't want to look at this why don't we hear the shout, we're interested in the facts? we want the facts to come out and let's assess the facts. we don't have to jump to any conclusions. we don't have to make any accusations against anyone but let's in fact take a profession attitude as opposed to a political attitude. but we're in the election season. we need more professionalism and less politics. we're not getting it. there are truth seekers. let's step back and say there are people on the beat, there are cops on the beat, i don't know what the fbi is doing, i don't know what the other parts

of the intelligence community are doing but we do know in the fourth estate, in the media there are truth seekers. we need more of them. elizabeth: you know we, joe biden's tax returns, we're still digging into them to see if there is any evidence of this. we do see that story about you know, hunter biden getting a deal with a former executives at china, now-defunct chinese energy company where the emails indicated that 20% of that jointly-shared fund was going to be, 20% went for, punitively hunter biden and 10% for the big guy. we don't know if that is joe biden or not. we're digging into that. that is a may 2017 story. >> right. elizabeth: i would like you to listen to former deputy independent counsel sol wisenberg with us last night on this. listen to what he had to say about this. watch this. >> i don't think he is going to do that. i'm not sure he should. i'm not sure the fbi should be involved in this close to an

♪. elizabeth: okay. let's welcome "the hill" media reporter back to the show. he is joe concha. joe, it is always great to have you on. joe, do you think there is a cone of silence in the media around the "new york post" story about hunter biden's laptop with the influence peddling emails? that is what glen greenwald at the intercept says. we're finding a long history of mead like abc, "the new york times," "washington post" reporting on the bidens cashing in on the family name? >> cone of silence. no, it is more like a pillow to the face, right? it is complete and total suppression, thou shall not even mention the story. if you share the story on social media, twitter and facebook made sure at least last week, that your account was locked out. ask kayleigh mcenany, the white house press secretary, ask the trump campaign. this is barely being covered there is no curiosity. number one adjective to describe journalists in the past, okay, answering some very simple questions. does the computer belong to

hunter biden? okay. are the emails authentic? because the biden campaign is not denying it. if they weren't authentic, they would say they're completely fabricated. that means joe biden lied he didn't talk to his son about any of his foreign dealings. those are three very basic journalism 101 questions being asked at this point. but instead we're seeing complete an total suppression of this. if joe biden is ever requested a question about it, sunday, he yells down the reporter and there is no condemnation from the media in terms of attacking the free press in terms of donald trump if he is unhappy with a question. not just even suppression at this point, elizabeth. "the boston globe" has a headline out today, enough about hunter biden. what about ivanka trump? that is okay, the trump kids. in this case with hunter biden there seems to be pretty substantial evidence. i know it hasn't been verified. but isn't that the verify the information?

i thought that is the job journalists are supposed to do, elizabeth. elizabeth: we've been looking into what the bidens have been doing. not just hunter biden getting a consulting fee from mbna in early 2000s, while joe biden was helping mbna with consumer bankruptcy provisions, new laws that would stop consumers from discharging debt t has to do, with you know as nbc reported, you know, that hunter biden getting involved with a real estate tycoon in romania over a corrupt land deal. construction deals in iraq. land development in costa rica. the bidens cashing in on the biden family name has been a story that has been out there. how does this compare to the criticism that well, the president's family has been doing the same thing? >> it is interesting, right? i'm old enough to remember the trump tower meeting that happened in 2015 that was reported a couple of years later. we were hear about indictments for donald trump, jr. and how that was the real smoking gun

when donald trump, jr. and jared kushner had met with a russian lawyer who wanted to talk about adoptions but apparently that was something that dominated the news cycle for weeks. suddenly journalists became very, there is this word, curious, everything that went on the meeting turned out to the be completely false as was the dossier as was mentioned on the show before. important sounding dossier, sound like from a bond film. without the dossier you don't have fisa warrants. the dossier doesn't even get into the public domain except the buzzfeed put whole thing out there without verifying as cnn that led to the special counsel investigation that ate up 2 1/2 years of this country's time led to a show about nothing, like "seinfeld." in terms of impeachment. wasting all the time, instead of solving all the problems this country has and there are many. at this point huntington will not defend himself. he is told not to say a word. joe biden is on a 96-hour debate

house judiciary. when you see all of this coming out now, this story keeps getting hotter. joe biden is off the campaign trail. there was a time when media like "the new york times," nbc, "washington post," "politico" reported on all of this. now there is silence about this. what is going on? >> there is a political story about global communications and james biden saying people all over the world were willing to cash in. this is why the computer and the emails between vice president biden and hunter biden are so important because one, he lied he said he didn't talk to anybody about his global dealings, and two, this has been going on for a long time and it is shocking to me that nobody is doing more to investigate it. elizabeth: okay. nbc reports in the final year of the obama administration, hunter biden goes to remain yaw. meets with a wealthy romanian real estate tycoon accused of orchestrating a corrupt land deal when vice president joe biden was pushing romania to crack down on corruption.

there is no evidence of any improper activities but there is not enough reporting on it or intelligence officials looking into it. "new york times," "politico," abc looking into it. when you brought up paradigm, that was joe biden's brother taking over an investment fund called paradigm. paradigm was starting to solicit, wait for it, money from unions, from labor unions and their pension funds. so he basically was quoted as saying, listen, we've got, also we have people, investors lined up around the world who want to invest in joe biden. we've got 747 planes lined up filled with cash. those, this is the type of stuff we're seeing when we dig into the story. are you seeing the same thing? >> absolutely. we know at the very least, that hunter biden was trying to profit off of this. so what his father knew is a very viable question and again just from what we already know we know that joe biden lied when he said he never talked to his kids about their financial dealings because we know, i
