she school. she worked hard, and she was a great student. and it's a rite of passage. she was a good kid, well rounded and a lot of fun. >> the fun southern beauty was born in memphis, tennessee in 1986 to parents beth and dave two holloway. two years later, her younger brother matt was born and the family moved to clinton, mississippi. after after her parents divorced, beth married a man named george he he relocated the family to alabama in a suburb of birmingham. >> >> mountain brook is a sweet little southern town. you have that image this your head, that's exactly what it is. the yards are beautiful, the homes are beautiful and everyone is kind. >> blair was one of natalee's closest friends. >> she made her way in a group of girls that i was becoming close friends with. and we clicked and started the typical junior high thing.
you did the spend the night parties, go to movies, talk about boys. >> i'll never forget her walking out her front door with her beautiful blond hair and her smile and hop in her little camry, and from then on, we were great friends. >> another close friend in their group was maly tucker. they gave natalee a nickname. >> natalee was hootie >> holloway. >> natalee had >> interests. >> she loved the wizard of oz. i can picture her room, and it had all these beautiful little wizard of oz things she loved leonard skynyrd. she was on the school dance team, at sporting events. she was really smart.
>> and all her hard work in high school certainly paid off. >> she was already enrolled at the university of alabama. she had three scholarships, ready to go. she graduated with all honors, math, spanish. she had a 4.71 gpa. i knew once natalee set a goal, she was going to meet it. she was determined that if she wanted something, she was going to make it happen and get there. >> on may 26 she left for aruba. >> she came and woke me up early that morning. because i was going to drive her to a friend's house. i helped her unload her luggage from the car. gave me a kiss good-bye. and i sat in front of the little girl's house, and watched the doors open, and you can see the i lights. i watched natalee's sill wet disappear into the light, closed the dor, i thought, okay, i love
you, have a wonderful time. i'm thinking, i'll see you >> monday. >> we stayed at the holiday inn. when we arrived in aruba, we were so thrilled and pretty sure all of us girls ran and put on bikinis and were on the beach within an hour. >> i took beth back to the holiday inn, the place where her daughter met joran van der slo t he sloot. he was the last person seen with natalee before she disappeared. this is the holiday inn where natalee was staying, right? >> right. that's where she stayed and pretty much 153 other classmates stayed. >> stayed. >> and over here at the casino is where she had met joran? >> yes. and actually, joran had already been hanging around her friends that week. he said he was 18, i'm staying at the holiday inn. i live in the netherlands.

in in aruba, carlos and charlie's was a popular night 18 18 year old natalee holloway and her friends spent what was to be their last night on the island dancing and drinking in the club. it was it was there that natalee met up again with joran van der sloot. >> although i didn't meet him quite a few of the directly. quite a few of the girls that we were with did and never got the sense of alarm. >> so just who is joran van der >> sloot? >> at 17 years old, he was

>> shoot. >> the group waited for local police to go with them to joran's home. when they got there, beth stayed in the car. >> the car door was open, and joran and the police were talking in english and the native dialect. >> did joran ever say anything? >> yes, he did. >> what did he say? >> it got heated, because he was talking about what sexual activity that he was engaging in with natalee in the back seat of the car. >> he said that then? >> oh, absolutely. >> she told me about the first time she came face to face with vander shoot. >> i said i want my daughter. i want her now. and he threw his head back and hit his chest and said what do you want me to do? what do you want me to do? >> i remember the phone being on and speakerphone. and just hearing beth's voice

natalee's disappearance, the arubaen police finally arrested joran van der sloot and his >> friends. >> everything went down right here at the holiday inn, right at the entrance. >> and of course, that's where joran says that he dropped her off and that she fell and hit her head. that's the first story he told. yeah. ? first yeah. first story. ? they ? they all get together and concouldn't this story, and it's a pretty basic story, we're just going to say we dropped her off at the hotel. she was really drunk, talking to a security guard who we can barely describe. and as long as we stick to that story, everything's going to be >> okay. >> we were basically making it up as we went along. we got out, and deepak said there were two security guards that saw her when she stepped out of the car and that's he told the police, and i was like, you know, that's what, now if you look back at that, you're like, i mean, that's horrible.
they got arrested and held for ten days because of this. that's really, i mean, that's something that, you know, i can't forgive myself for either. >> there's speculation that they had gotten advice from joran's father who didn't want to see his son go to prison. >> but their story quickly fell apart after surveillance footage showed they never drop natalee off that night. >> the brothers had dropped him off at a beach, and there was evidence that deepak was at home and using a computer. so at that point, joran was really hung out to dry, because he didn't have those two friends to fall back on as possible alibis for himself. and so that's when the story really started unraveling, and all different scenarios started to come up with joran. >> why did he need to lie? why was it not enough to say i
left her on the beach? >> of course that's what we should have done. that's the biggest mistake of my at that life. at that point, it's just, i wasn't thinking that, you know, we probably weren't thinking clearly. you're you're thinking you don't want to have anything, you know, to do with any of that. we just wanted to get away from it, you know, as fast as possible. >> there >> there was no evidence that natalee was ever left on that sfwl beach. sfwl all we wanted to do was get on a plane and go search the fields of aruba. that's all we wanted to do, and we weren't allowed to do that. >> back home in mountain brook, natalee's friends found a way to help. >> >> we would braid these bracelets and put them in a box and send them to aruba. >> these are hope for natalee will bracelets. will you wear one?

live live from america's news headquarters, i'm patricia stark. a funeral held today for liquori tait, one of the officers shot a week ago during a traffic stop in mississippi. hundreds of law enforcement officers and others came to pay their respects. a funeral was held tuesday for the other officer killed. two people have been killed and 20 others hurt in a train accident in northwestern the germany. the train hit a manure truck and continued down the track before coming to a stop. miraculously, the driver of the truck was not physically the injured. the train was carrying about 40 passengers at the time. i'm patricia stark. and now back to greta for all your for all your headlines, log onto
