about where they are born and not have it be seen as racial. chris: can you say go back where you came from? >> the send her back chant, the president was clear he didn't agree with it. chris: he let it go on for 13 seconds and it was only when the chant diminished that he started talking again. he said nothing there or in his tweet after the rally that indicated any concern about the chant. >> i want to get to the core issue. the president was clear he disagreed with that tweet. the core issue is all the people in that audience and patriotic americans across country are tired of being beat up and talked down to by members of congress in congress' and the media. you saw the quotes from representative omar saying some people did something about 9/11.

but if you watch it in context it's worse. you saw the quotes from representative omar saying we talk about al qaeda in a menacing tone but we don't talk about the army in a menacing tone. if you watch it in context it's even worse. perhaps most of shocking of all were the comments made by alexandria ocasio-cortez saying our border agents are running concentration camps and they are nazi. so anybody who supports the border patrol are nazi sympathizers. one more point that i have to say. i am a jew. as an american jew, i am profoundly outraged from alexandria ocasio-cortez. it's a historical smear. it minimize the death and

suffering and it paints ear of border patrol officer as a war criminal. chris: the president says the four congress women mate america. here he is. president trump: i can tell you this. you can't talk that way about our country. not when i'm the president. chris were but during this 2016 campaign and even as president, mr. trump has been as critical of this country as anything, the squad has ever said. take a look. president trump: i think president obama has been the most of ignorant president in our history. nobody respects us, they laugh at us, they don't know what they are doing. rusted out factories scattered like tomb stones across our country. >> you think our country is so innocent? chris: why is what those

congress women said --ism not going to defend everything the squad said. there are a lot of things they said that i think are wrong and deeply troubling. why is what those congress women said in general any worse than what you just heard president trump say. president obama is ignorant and the country is killers. >> a great question. it's the heart of the debate we are having in this country. anybody running for office right, left or center always points out where they think america can do better and where they think america needs to go. but there is a fundamental distinction between people who think we need to lean into and strengthen america's core values, whether they are constitutional values, the rule of law, the principles of western civilization or those who think we ought to turn america into venezuela. chris: the fact of the matter is

people can have a legitimate difference of opinion about policies. under the constitution that you so believe in and i believe in, the first amendment allows everybody to say it. we are not talking about constitutional rights. the president said president obama has been the most of ignorant president in our history. when asked about killers, he -- when asked about putin he said there are a lot of killers. you think our country is so innocent? that's sharply critical. >> there is as canyon-size difference between saying we need better enforcement of our immigration laws to protect u.s. citizens and better trade deals to end the deindustrialization. chris: that's not what i'm talking about. >> the president ran a campaign that can be summarized in two words. america first. there is a huge difference

between america first and an ideology -- chris: i completely, nobody has any problem with what the president's policies have been. it's when he goes into spoking racial fears. i never called any of his tweets racist. but there is no question he is stoking racial divisions. >> the core element of the president's philosophy is america first. saying that america needs to improve to get closer to an america first ideal as the president did as a candidate, criticizing obama, criticizing our trade deals or immigration policies is out of love for america. saying as alexandria ocasio-cortez did that illegal immigrants are more american than americans is fundamentally an anti-american statement. chris: let's go to alexandria ocasio-cortez. the president is particularly upset with one particular slur

by the congress women. president trump: when people are speaking so badly and when they call our country garbage, think of that -- that's worse than deplorable. chris: but here is what alexandria ocasio-cortez -- he repeated that often. somebody he didn't say was aoc called the country garbage. here is what she actually said. all of these things sound radical compared to where we are. but where we are is not a good thing. this idea of 10% better from garbage shouldn't be what we settle for. she didn't say the country was garbage. she said some of the policies are garbage. >> it's impossible to read the quote that way. chris consider 10% isn't what we should settle for.

criticisms of the country itself. these four congress women detest america as it exists, as it is currently constructed. they want to tear down the structure of our country. they want it to be a socialist open borders country. if you want to destroy america with open borders, you cannot say you love your country. if you attack border agents the way alexandria ocasio-cortez has, it shows a deep-seated hatred of america as it exists. and in the process it doesn't matter if american citizens lose their jobs, health coverage and their very lives. there is a gigantic distinction between donald trump saying i am going to put america first and a view that americans should never come first and american citizens should never come first is their view and that's what we are going to take to the ballot box.

this network and doing a quick tweeting. his staff is happy for him to talk about the squad. the point at which they get uncomfortable is the point where he says go back to your own countries. chris: there was a lot of talk about whether this is politically smart. it seems to me misses the real point. and that is, was this wrong? was it over the line to say go back where you came from? >> i wouldn't defend necessarily the tweet he sent out. but there have been a lot of comparisons made to the late senator john mccain who he did shut down people when they made comments about obama. in 1963 we saw white supremacists bomb a church. that's the environment we

operate in where we have seen the left weaponnize these words of racism and sexism against their opponents. chris: was it wrong for the president to say send them back to the country -- why don't you dough back to the country from which you came? >> i'm a political analyst. that's not my job to say. it's my job to analyze the politics and optics of this. i will say president trump has good instincts in look at the electorate. he may not have looked at the "axios" report showing that the four congress women are toxic to the democratic party. and they are if you want to

he'll straight four people to make that point, these four women meet those descriptions. chris: was it wrong? >> yes. as will people who occasionally tweet at me after i get off the air and they don't mean arizona. i literally get that in my twitter feed and i will get occasionally walking down the street. it does mean something deep and profound and hurtful to a lot of americans. that you are other. that's what this is really about. this is really about the otherrization of americans. the president is saying if you do not see america the sway i see america, you do not belong in america. that's what he's saying. chris: he's not saying it to white men. he's saying it to women of color.

taking this tactic? >> i can't count the number of times i have been troubled by what donald trump tweets. i think this is donald trump being donald trump. i add this to the pile of other things i correspond you bewise and unhelpful. chris: here is the reason i kind of disagree with you, it seems to me the unity of the country and the harmony and the racial harmony of the country is important. so if the president says something, anybody says something -- >> nobody looks to donald trump for racial harmony and haven't for the past two years. i don't think that's the news. the news is whether the democrats are taking the bait here. i don't think if the steam is strategizing about this. but i think trump has a strategy and he wants to make the left

bait. donald trump has one thing going for him. he has a strong economy. every day's not talking about that is a wasted opportunity for him politically. his unfavorable rates at 55%. his job approval rating is even lower. people don't like him. but a lot of people are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because we are in good economic times. if he's not talking about that, i think he's taking the bait. >> we are in an environment where alexandria ocasio-cortez is essentially said that nancy pelosi is a racist. her chief of staff likened democrats to segregationists. and these four women saying they are primary people of color. that is today's environment we operate in that we use terms

chris: wednesday former special counsel robert mueller faces four hours of questioning before two house committees on election interference by the russians and possible obstruction by president trump.

joining us now are exclusively from new york, the chair of the house judiciary committee, jerry nadler. robert mueller made it clear he doesn't want to testify and he won't go beyond what he wrote in his report. >> we chose those words carefully and the word speaks for itself. the report is my testimony. i would not provide information beyond that which is already public in any appearance before congress. chris: why are you putting mueller and the country through this. >> we want the american people to hear directly from mr. mueller what his investigation found. the attorney general and others have spent the last couple months systematically lying about what the investigation found. they said it found no collusion, no obstruction and it exonerated the president.

all three of those statements are absolute lies. it found a great deal of collusion and obstruction of justice by the president and it refused to exonerate the president. it's important for the american people to hear what the facts are. this is a president who violated the law six ways from sunday. if anyone else has been accused of what the report says the president has done, they would have been indicted. it's important that we not have a lawless president and administration it's important that the american people see what the president is doing. chris: you read the 448-page report. do you believe the president is guilty of high crimes and misdemeanors, the marker for impeachment by the house? >> the report presents very substantial evidence that the president is guilty of high

crimes and misdemeanors. and we have to let mueller present those facts to the american people and see where we go from there. no president can be above the law. >> your committee has said, your committee staff said you expect mueller could be fairly uncaptainive and give yes or no answers. when you ask a question about an incident, refer you to a specific page in the record. look at page the 24, vol 2. i know people said see the movie, don't read the book. what if this end up being a dud? >> we hope it won't be a dud. we'll ask specific questions about page 334 be paragraph 2, please right. does that describe obstruction of justice and did you find the president did that, for example. chris: republicans say they will use their time and they get

equal time along with each of your members to ask about what they call the corrupt cabal. and that's the idea there was fbi mix conduct in launching and conducting the investigation of the president. isn't there a veal chance -- you are asking about stuff that's already in the report, and the republicans could end up getting more out of this hearing than democrats did. >> those charges have been investigated by the inspector general and found to be baseless. chris: forgive me be sir. the inspector general hasn't come out with his report on the conduct of the trump investigation. >> well, the inspector general came out -- most of of what they are talking about is the hillary investigation and the beginning of the trump investigation. it's very clear the trump investigation was not predicated

on the so-called gossier they are talking about. there d the so-called dossier they are talking about. and the so-called nice a application. the inspector general found there was nothing wrong with the other half of what they are talking about, the hillary investigation. he's finishing it. if they want to discuss this, let them waste their time. but what's before the american people is the conducts of this president and what mueller found about the conduct of this president and where we go from here. chris: some democrats perhaps even you hope this hearing will breathe flue life into the possibility of impeaching the president. here is what he has to say about that. >> how many bites at the apple do you get? we have gone through 500 witnesses. 2,500 subpoenas. i let them interview my lawyers.

there was no collusion. chris: here is what a "wall street journal" poll from earlier this month found. 21% say there is enough evidence for congress to begin impeachment hearings. 27% say congress should continue investigating. but 50% say there should be no hearings and mr. trump should finish his term as president. hasn't the country largely moved on from the trump investigation? >> no, the country has not moved on. the president and the attorney general have lied to the american people about what was in the mueller report, about the fact you just heard the president say there was no collusion, that's not true. that they found no collusion, that was not true. people don't read a 448-page report. i believe when people hear what was in the mueller report, then we'll be in a position to begin holding the president

accountable and make this less of a lawless administration. the fact of the matter is the president has been lawless in telling all witnesses not to obey congressional subpoenas and not to testify at all. and that is beyond the pale of the constitution. chris: regardless of what mueller said one said you plan to continue this investigation. you want to talk to former white house counsel don mcghan who was involved in many of these incidents when according to the mueller report the president told him to get the special counsel versus gaidgesded. the white house refused to make him available. you suggested you are going to go to court. how soon do you plan to take that before a judge? >> within a couple of days. if the house counsel weren't so

busy enforcing subpoenas, other subpoenas, we would have done that before. we have never seen a situation where the white house and president stonewalls congress on subpoenas. that was article 3 of the nixon investigation. the president is stonewalling all subpoenas. that's an invasion of the separation of power and core function of the duty of congress to hold the administration accountable to the american people. chris: you are also asking hope hicks who is a former white house visor. house -- advisor to tack about her knowledge of stormy daniels. her lawyer issued this statement.

miss hicks stand by her truthful testimony that she first became aware of this in november 206 as a result of press inquiries. >> that would seem to go against the evidence that was released by the court in the michael cohen case the other day. so wev have asked her to clarify how her testimony was truthful given what the court filings reveal. but again, the key here is all people owe the public their evidence. all witnesses owe the public their evidence. and it is our duty to make sure that people like mcghan testify. the mueller report shows the president asked him to fire the special counsel so as to stop the investigation into the president. he asked him to deny publicly.

so both of those, if true, are criminal acts by the president. >> this information came out when the judge ordered it released after the prosecutor in new york indicated that the hush money case is closed, and they are not going to bring charges against anyone else. so isn't that kind of a dry hole? according to reports the prosecutor found that there was not sufficient evidence to show that president trump knowingly intentionally violated campaign finance laws. >> first of all, i don't think there was the latter finding. he could not consider indicting the president because it's the policy of the justice department that a sitting president may not be indicted no matter what, no matter what the evidence. the finding in that case michael cohen was sent to prison for these campaign finance

president trump: what happened to me with this witch hunt should never be allowed to happen to another president of the united states. never ever again. chris: president trump once again denouncing the russia investigation ahead of robert mueller's much-even is pay thed testimony before congress. jason, what do you expect from the mueller hearings? >> not much. the democrats spent two years telling us the mueller investigation would show obstruction conclusion, and it showed neither. this is more evidence the hearings the democrats refuse to accept that result. mueller doesn't want to be there. he made that clear in his press conference after the report was released. and i don't think he's going to give them much. chris: on this issue of the mueller hearing, marilyn simpson clark posted this, why are they

going to conduct hearings when he's already stated the report is his testimony and has nothing further to add? >> i would echo that sentiment and have the same question myself. i question why he ever gave a press conference in the first place. we now his office was shutting down by the fact the report had been turned in. you had attorney general barr and rod rosenstein make the decision not to move forward on obstruction of justice. he also contradicted himself by originally saying he would have cleared the president if he could have while saying he decided he wasn't going to reach a conclusion and giving a wink wink nod nod to the democrats saying it's congress' duty to find wrongdoing of a sitting

president. i think it reason he gave it press conference was to give ammunition to democrats. chris: mo, it will be interesting to see. the democratic staff seems to be this could be like pulling teeth to get him to say things. he's not a particularly forthcoming or cooperative witness, couldn't this be to coin a phrase, a dud? >> it could be. but i think you will see democrats focus on three lines of questioning. one will be drilling down on the contact the campaign had with the russians. two, the obstruction issue which i think will be interesting. again, mueller said in the report, at least it's intimated from the report that the only reason he didn't go further was because his hand are tied. democrats trying to pin him down

on that will be interesting. and one gianted and freaked out by. that's russian attempts -- forget the collusion for a second -- russian attempts to infiltrate our electoral process which this congress has not focused on as much. democrats have possibled legislation but republicans haven't been there. we'll see what they do on that. >> chairman nadler crystallized in your interview what this is all about. this is about educating the american people through television. it's about stoking impeachment. we have done a lot of reporting on this. there are a couple of quotes members gave. this is from jackie speier. my fantasy is when i get my you five minutes i will have him read certain excerpts from his report. i think that will be powerful. nadler said the same thing.

can you imagine having robert mueller read his own report. they know no one read the report. they are trying to beat the american people over the head and change those numbers you put up on the screen. chris: something that is exciting and has pictures, iran seized a british tanker in the persian gulf this week and released this video. you can see iranian command doughs in ski masks, they a pelled from a helicopter and seized control. but president trump's reaction to the seizing of this tanker was restraint. >> this goes to show what i am saying about iran. trouble, nothing but trouble. chris: it sounds like something out of a sitcom. jonathon, what are you hearing

about where the president is on military across against iran and what would it take for him to decide to pull the trigger? >> call me my eve but i don't think this president wants war with iran. i don't believe he want that. obviously he said this publicly. i believe he want to avoid that. what some people who are doveish and talk to the president and worry about his national security advisor. what they worry about is accidental conflict. the escalation. they have to respond. this an escalating ladder of conflict and they might get a war he doesn't want. but i believe he want to do everything he can to avoid -- certainly avoid a massive troop deployment in that region. chris: i assume you approve of the president's restraint on iran. >> he was right to show restraint when the first -- they

they shot count american drone the first time. but i think i would share the concern of his doveish advisors which is a lack of clarity in his policy toward iran, plus iran's increased provocation, and i'm laying a lot of the blame at iran. that those two things could lead us to a tricky situation that he gets pushed into or trips into. >> we can't confuse restraint with weakness which is what iran could be saying from their vantage point. there have been a series of provocations in recent months. this is a result of these sanctions. if we can't trade our hoyle we'll make it hard for everyone else to engage in this business. i think we'll continue to see provocations until they get a meaningful response to them. yes we sent some troops and said some tough things. but the mullahs don't respond to that.

they will respond to resolve on the part of the left. chris: a question i have is, after the u.s. drone was shot down, and the president apparently ordered a military strike then at the last minute called it off. if he had gone ahead with that strike, would iran perhaps not be taking the actions it is now? >> you are correct. they wouldn't be. we have some precedent for this. in the 1980s. iran was acting out this way and reagan took out some oil platforms and they stopped. the mullahs got the message. there is a precedent for how we can respond forcefully. chris: any second thoughts about maybe they should have taken that across after the u.s. drone was shot down. >> they wanted him to take that action. i don't have any evidence the president himself second guessed it. he was talking about how he got great reviews from the media for
