gentlemen standing back there don't have to go home and tell their wives, or their kids or their husbands when the next job is going to come. ryan: by the end of this afternoon, more than 200 people spoke out for and against this controversial pipeline project. it is now in the hands of the three-member iowa utilities board. kevin: a total of 280 people signed up to speak at today's open hearing on the bakken oil pipeline. 134 were listed in favor of the project. 80 of them list an out of state address. 143 were opposed to the pipeline. only 3 say they're from outside iowa. 3 of the speakers saying they were neutral. the public comment portion of the pipeline hearing is over. but the evidentiary hearings continue until early next month. with the last hearing scheduled for thursday, december 3. with the board's final decision

expected sometime in late december or early january. kevin: we asked our kcci.com users if the pipeline should be built in iowa. so far, the vote in our unscientific poll is pretty strong against the pipeline. stacey: the national weather service now says 5 tornadoes touched down in iowa. confirmed touchdowns in avoca, guthrie county, knoxe, barnes city, and melrose. kcci's rose heavy is in melrose tonight. how powerful was the tornado there? rose: here, south of melrose in monroe county, national weather -- you can see that an ef-2 tornado came in behind me. they are just happy no one was hurt. homeowners and family focused on cleanup today. national weather service officials say gusts of 100 miles per hour blasted through the border between monroe and appanoose counties. they say about a 5 mile stretch was impacted the worst, with several homes and equipment sheds torn apart.

families took for cover once they heard the winds coming their way. it only lasted several minutes but their homes became , unrecognizable. >> i looked up the basement stairs and i could see a lot of daylight coming through the kitchen because there was no roof anymore. rose: many families are thinking their alert systems because they were saying they were able to take cover just in time. stacey: in the des moines metro, all but a few homes are still without power. but kcci's jason rantala shows us from des moines south west side, there's still plenty of clean-up work to be done. jason r: the winds were so strong last night, they tackled -- they toppled a tree right into what once was a garage. a homeowner says she's lucky it didn't go right into her children's bedroom. workers are left to remove massive pieces of tree from this avenue. after wednesday's storms caused it to topple.

two cars inside when it happened. >> it was terrifying. very terrifying. >> i mean look at all of our trees over there, they're just, they're gone. jason r: neighbors like kristi berg are left with some heavy lifting after the storm destroyed at least a half dozen trees across several properties. tree limbs blocking driveways, and damaging homes, as well. >> 15, 20 seconds of whatever it was, i'm speechless. jason r: of the two cars in that garage, and suv has been totaled and protected the fall from the garage onto a smaller car, or at least that is how it appears right now. live in des moines, jason rantala, kcci 8 news, iowa's news leader. kevin: let's get to kurtis. kurtis: we have been getting the information and minute by minute.

this is what we have so far. des moines tornado at about 75 miles per hour. the melrose area, ef-2, coming in at 125 miles per hour. over in barnes city. could be a couple more of those tornadoes once the surveys are done. eastern iowa. a little less windy. pretty shot from webster city. temperatures dipped down into the low 30's with crystal clear skies. 47 noon. degrees. the afternoon.

saturday, 62. sunday, a high of 60 degrees. kevin: a psychologist in the ngor makuey murder trial says makuey did not know the difference between right and wrong when he beat to death his 97-year-old neighbor. dr. luis rosell says makuey claims he's been hallucinating for years, and that voices in his head give him instructions on what to do. rosell diagnosed makuey with having some symptoms of schizophrenia. makuey says a green man with 4 arms had taken control of his body and made him beat the andersons. with that. >> this type of visual hallucination is unheard of. it is totally scientifically preposterous. kevin: a prosecution missed basic requirements during his assessment of makuey and the results should be considered invalid. stacey: new information in the death investigation of an iowa state student whose

body was found near railroad tracks on the northeast side of campus. iowa state police identified the victim as 21-year-old dane schussler. his body was spotted by railroad workers monday night. isu police say it looks as though schussler was hit by the train, but a final determination on his cause of death will be made by the state medical examiner. more than 200 residents who call mercy park apartments home must now find a new place to live. mercy park is located on the east side of the mercy medical center campus. mercy says it plans to tear down the complex next year. that will make room for a new inpatient facility. the apartment will be closed next september. the hospital says it's working to find mercy park residents a new place to live. kevin: it's football under the dome. we're at the uni-dome in cedar falls with a look at how central iowa 8-man teams did. first, it was jeb bush. now, donald trump.

announcer: this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news at 6:00 with kevin cooney, stacey horst, chief meteorologist john mclaughlin, and iowa's sports caster of the year andy garman. stacey: republican presidential candidate donald trump is in fort dodge right now. kevin: trump holding a rally at iowa central community college. kcci's chief political reporter cynthia fodor is live where the rally has just started. cynthia: i am here in the decker auditorium at the iowa central community college. about 1500 people have come from all over webster county. he is about ready to take the stage after spending the afternoon at an ethanol plant talking about renewable fuel standards. there are about 5500 students and he is hoping to lord these

young voters, who make up about 15%-20% of the electorate. he says a lot of them come to his rallies to hand him their resumes and ask for jobs. about 50% split on this campus as far as the republican ticket for dr. ben carson and donald trump, which is what we are all seeing in the polls. a lot of folks came from all over the county. you said you came because you wanted to see donald trump and you are going to vote for him. quickly, why? >> i have thought it over at great length. we need somebody that is going to get something done. i am very, very worried about our national debt. cynthia: thank you very much. we understand trump will be

talking about immigration, which has been a hot topic all week. we will bring you everything he has to say on kcci 8 news at 10:00 tonight. kevin: back here in des moines, work continues at drake university for saturday's democratic presidential debate. stacey: kcci is a co-sponsor of the debate. our own kevin cooney will co-moderate along side cbs's the des moines register's kathie obradovich. the debate comes as a new cbs news/new york times poll shows the hillary clinton with a 19% lead over bernie sanders. kevin: for the debate, we want to remind you to tune into special coverage live from drake university. begins at following our 6:30 p.m. regularly scheduled newscast. then following the debate, kcci 8 news at 10 will expand to one hour to bring you the best post-debate highglights, reaction, and analysis. an interesting, and hopefully very fun part of our debate coverage will be to have a live voter panel.

there will be 10 uncommitted adults and 10 uncommitted college students. stacey: kcci's shaina humphries will speak with the voters before and after the debate to find out if the candidates can sway them. today, she asked one panel member what it would take saturday. shaina: at the moment des moines , attorney blake lubinus is leaning toward clinton in 2016. >> as a democrat you love everything that bernie says. i just feel he is relying on a political revolution that i'm pretty skeptical is going to happen in this country. shaina: but a revolution in his allegience remains a possibility, heading into saturday's debate. >> it would take something significant, but i always try to go into caucus season with an open mind. shaina: the candidates will need questions will not only be coming from moderators. along with media from around the nation, twitter is getting set up on the drake campus right now. so our voter panel will also be watching to see the candidates think on their feet, as they take live questions using the hashtag, #demdebate. >> the extent to which the

clear skies overnight, 41. 7:00 a.m., 33. it is going to be a brisk morning. average tairod 49, 50 degrees. it has been and above normal november so far. forecast across the state -- 47 and sunshine in ames. here is what we are coming up with. we are these damage surveys in for the national weather service. it did cross lake rathbun. it started just on the southern shore. cap link, 11 miles. maximum sustained winds, 125 miles per hour. that makes it a mid range ef-2 tornado.

$68,000. i owe $44,000 in student loans. my plan, the new college compact, says you should not have to borrow money to pay tuition if you go to a public college or university. and you ought to be able to refinance student debt. and i don't believe the federal government should be making a profit off of lending to young people who are borrowing to be able to get their education. we have got to make college affordable.

, taking on west delaware. right before the players walk onto the kinnick stadium turf, they pass a huge sign, enter the black. the hawkeyes are taking that literally saturday evening for the game against minnesota, the fans are wearing all black. and iowa will be sporting a yet-be-unveiled alternate jersey. kirk ferentz is not a big fan of altering his teams luck but he , says the uniforms being unveiled this weekend have been well received. >> to me, why would you change them? we have classic uniforms. why would you change those? i am not a fun killer, either. if it makes us play better. andy: not a tyrants. the hawkeyes having fun.
