6:01 am
current front- runners dr. ben carson and donald trump were not there. but senators ted cruz and marco rubio attended. jeb bush, who's also behind in the polls, criticized trump for the way he's handled voter support in iowa. "you know poll numbers go up and they go down. iowa proves that in every caucus. when they go down, you don't insult iowa voters because they're the same discerning voters whether your polls are going up or down. you learn from iowa voters, so it's a joy to be here." " the candidates also took some time to talk about the controversy surrounding their latest debate on c-n-b-c. the next republican debate is on november 10th in milwaukee. before the republican forum in des moines, senator cruz had some time to experience iowa's outdoors. he went pheasant hunting in akron with congressman steve king and bob vander plaats. being off the campaign trail didn't stop cruz from chiming in
6:02 am
cruz again highlighted his party's disappointmen t with the c-n-b-c debate. " we shouldn't have republican primary debates moderated by liberal democrats. " "i've suggested how about a republican primary moderated by sean hannity and rush limbaugh and mark levin. now i guarantee you-you would get incredible ratings for that. i'd love to see that primary " cruz's comments follow the republican national committee's announcement that it's suspending its february debate with n-b-c news. campaign organizers for each g-o-p candidate are meeting today to discuss new debate standards. on the democratic side, candidate bernie sanders talked about the grassroots support of his campaign, versus the his opponent, hillary clinton. during a rally in new hampshire this weekend, sanders talked about the unprecedente d number of contributions
6:03 am
to his campaign. "one of my opponents touts the fact that she has a lot of establishment support -- governors and senators and mayors and that's true. a lot more than we have. but, on the other hand, we have more people who have made more individual campaign contributions at this point in the campaign than any other candidate in american history " sanders did not visit iowa this weekend. but he will be in des moines on november, to participate in the second democratic debate. bernie's wife, jane sanders, took some time to praise her husband's campaign efforts. in an interview saturday, she said she was surprised by the growing momentum behind his work. "people have been very specific about how happy they are that bernie is running, because he's speaking to their issues. its been incredible, i'm really proud of bernie. it's moved

alert forecast, britley... temperatures will definitely be warmer today! highs will top out in the middle 60s with plenty of sunshine! as a warm front lifts to our north this afternoon our temperatures increase. this makes for great weather to trick-or-treat or maybe just get out and enjoy the fall season. those warmer temperatures last for the first half of our week, with highs reaching at or near the 70 degree mark. as for rain we stay dry for a short amount of time. thursday brings the return of rain, which will continue into friday. happy november 1st! i hope you all enjoyed the extra hour of sleep. thanks britley. many people living in eastern iowa will see a raise in their minimum wage, starting today. the minimum wage in johnson county was 7
6:23 am
dollars, 25 cents, which is the current state level. now it's nearly a dollar higher, at 8 dollars, 20 cents. this the first in a set of three planned minimum wage increases in the county. the second increase starts may 1st 20-16. on that date, it will go to 9 dollars, 15 cents. then in 2017, the final increase will take it to 10 dollars, 10 cents an hour. in september, the johnson county board of supervisors passed an ordinance to raise the minimum wage. that means all businesses and employees in the county are subject to the change. some university of iowa students are cleaning up a wet mess in their dorm rooms, after a fire triggered sprinkler systems in their building. that happened in slater residence hall around 1:30 saturday morning. kcrg-tv9's sarah mccarthy shows us the damage students are dealing with. fan for freshman student kelynn wright this.. fan is the only way to combat the half inch of water that seeped into his room following a fire five floors above him.
