good thanksgiving eve to you from tv-9. here's a live look this morning at on our city cam. it's november 25th and th is what you need to know today. recently released court documents say that an apparent text-message break-up caused alexander kozak to shoot andrea farrington at the coral ridge mall in junee some people in north liberty give their opinions on a possible weapons ban on city property. the city council says it will look for oter ways to make people feel safe. protestors in chicago hit the streets and shut down interstates after new video shows a police officer shooting a teenager in 20-14. some snow plows in cedar rapids are a little more colorful thanks to some creative elementary school students learning abouu public works.s. and this hour we take a look back at ashley hinson's career at tv-9 as we share our last newscast together as a morning show team.

comment on the relationship. kcrg-tv9's iowa city bureau chief mark carlson has more. jcomm 39-gunshots at that mall, gunshots at the mall... clear law one. everyone, switch your traffic to law 3, gunshots at the mall. months after a deadly shooting at thecoral ridge mall - court- ordered seals on documents are beginning to expire... giving the public a better glimpse at the case. according to those documents - alexander kozak claimed to be in a relationship with andrea farrington. but on the night of june 12th -- he says she texted him to break things off -- that's when kozak---accor ding to the documents---- quote "ssapped." investigators say kozak went back to his apartment in north liberty to get his gun and papak a bag of clothes before returning to the mall and gunning down farrington in front of dozens families on a friday nig. "last seen running out by shields the service entrance, shields the service entrance." according to the documents -- kozak got on the interstate and started

illinois minutes after the shooting. around west branch he threw his phone -- containing the alleged break-up text -- out the window. soon after a trooper spotted kozak near the i-80 truck stop innalcott-- thenen followed him for 9 miles before back-up arrived and kozak was stopped and arrested near the quad cities. the next day an investigator recovered his phone. tv-9's iowa city bureau chief mark carlson with that story. these new documents don't include any of the text messages between farrington and kozak. that likely won't come out until this case goes to trial in april. dozens of people are telling the north liberty city council to not pass a resolution that would ban weaponsfrom city property. at a meeting last night, city council members discussed the move, and heard from several people. most who were there were against it. tv-9's forrest saunders is live in the newsroom this morning. forrest, some peopl went quite the distance to give their opinion? that's right ashley and nicole. one person drove from keokuk and another from des moines to just to make sure

"people have got to realize that there's so much in this world that's going onright now, people havv got to defend themselves." "the second amendment right is a basic right of self defense that we have that should not be taken away from us, if it is, if you do that, i recommend changing the name of yor town." "you think putting a sign up here is going to protect a criminal f fom coming hereeand shooting somebodod here or in the library. you do not need to be concerned about people who are lawfully carrying their weapons." the city says this is just a discussion at this point. it's something that surfaced recently during meetings of the library board and the parks and rec board as they looked over their policies. onon library board member tells us she was in favor of the council passing a ban because she'd feel safer if no one would have weapons inside.

to develop aaprotocol for staff for if someone does walk in to the library or rec center with a gun. they're also looking into training staff, so they feel comfortable about how to respond if there's ever an emergency. back tooyou. tvtv9's forrest ssnders. thanks a lot. more drop-off boxes for prescription pills will be going up at police stations and sheriff's offices across eastern iowa. it's an effort to ststp opioid addictions,,hich can often lead to heroin addictions. earlier this month, we reported that the university of iowa's college of public health says there has been a 250 percent increase in iowa's unintentionana poisoning deehs from 2002 to 2014. nearly 83 percent of those deaths were linked to prescription abuse or illicit drug use. the u-s attorney's office for the northern dissict of iowa unveiled fouu new boxes yesterday where people can discard unwanted medicines. the newest boxes will be in secure sites at the johnson county sheriff's office and the police departments in coralville, university heightsts and waterloo.

and while people can drop off many types of medicines, the real purpose is to collect pain pills that people can abuse. " 3 out of 4 heroin addicts start by using opioid drugs... it's because ofover prescription or bbcause they got it from family or friend that reaches into the medical cabinet " the city of hiawatha has counted every single pill that people have turned in at an anonymous drop box. in one 12-month period, there were more than 60- thousand pills. west delaware high school and northeast iowa community college have partnered to meet the growing manufacturing demand throughout the city of manchester. with a 160 thousand dollar renovation,n, the students at west delaware high school and northeast iowa community college get to use state of the art equipment in a new welding lab. high school students will use it during the day and adults will take a course at night. officials say there are 75 to 100 open manufacturin g

now, and this lab will will get students prepared to dive directly into those jobs. theenext night class for adults will start in january. students at anamosa high school have a lot to be proud of heading into the thanksgiving holiday. the school won 100- thousand dollars in the state farm celebrate my drive competition. administrators plan on using the money to repaint the parking lot and number the spaces to increase safety. "we will use it not only for safe driving but also for school improvements, specifically upgraded drinking fountains, new clocks and upgraded bathrooms." students created and submitted this video as part of the competition. it challenges students to not text and drive and avoid any distracted driving. one city plow in cedar rapids is a little more colorful, thanks to some area elementary school kids. johnson elementary students got to paint the blade of a city plow that will clear snow near their school.

the city invited 140 second graders to and see a say they learned a lot about snow removal. "the truck puts salt and sand up in that thing bluish types of things learned where those came from. charged with first degree murder......documented october 20, 2014 - 9:47pm olice receivv a call about a breaking into cars . within ten minutes officers find mcdonald walking down the street. the video shows mcdonald was moving away from the officers. the prosecutor says within six seconds - van dyke opened fire - shooting alal 16 rounds frommhis 9 mm gun falls to the ground almost instantly? and died soon after. the prosecutor says officer van dyke kept firing his gun......even after the teen collapsed. outside court - the officerers atttney had only tts to say: sot - dan herbert / defense attorney "this is not a murder case despite what you heard in the courtroom," but what is seen in the video has city officials and mcdonald's family urging calm in the community tag: officer van dyke is being held without bond. chicago is just the latest city dealing with fallout from a shooting insolving a police officer.

russian president vladimir putin says turkey's downing of a russian warplane is quote "a stab in the back". he alsosays it will have serious consquences for russian-turkish relations. the bomber crashed in syria, after violating turkish airspace, according to turkey. a u-s official tells c-n-n it calculates the russian jet was in turkish airspaae for 30 seconds or less. but the turkey president says his country had no choice but to take out the plane. two russian pilots ejected from the plane. one of the lots died, and the other pilot is safe at a russian base. some people in iowa aren't happy with governor branstad's stance on letting syrian refugees into the state. so now they're protesting and want to meet him face to face to tate their concerns. here's a live look on our city cam this morning. kaj wiwil be back right after the break with a

is investigating damamae at a house that caugugt fire. several fire departments responded to 22-hundred central city road around 8-30 last night. the central city fire chief told tv-9 no one was hurt. we're working on trying to find out how much dadage there is and how the firere started. stay with tv-9 and kcrg dot com for updates. there was a lot of opposition to a proposed weaponsban on city priperty in north liberty, ast night. dozens of people packed the city council chambers during a meeting to urge members not to pass the resolution. kcrg-tv's forrest saunders joins us at the desk this morning. forrest, a lot of the tensn was because people were confused about the resolution. that's right guys. according to the mayor, a lot of people thought this was a city-wide weapons ban. but instead, the resolution would only prohbit firearms on city property. this is the second time the council has looked at the ban, since 2013. it's become an extremely hot topic. the mayor said council members have received more than 300 messages on the m mtter. she said d ome were quote "inappropriate and foul". last night, the

resolution faced more stiff opposition. during public comment, opponents called the ban dangerous, that it would ma pubc spaces unsafe. one man shared a story of when he used his weapon to protect himself. " 16:26:00 what would happen if i didn't have a pistol - whether it be private property, city propery, government owned property or who cares what kind of&property it is. i wouldn't be here today." "16:22:06 this law makes it easier for a criminal terrorist and i'm not trying to sound like the sound is falling here, it just makes evvrything easier for them in gun-free zones. " on the other side, a library board member told us she ikes the ban because she'd feel safer if no one would have weapons inside. the council didn't end up voting on the measure. instead, members opted to look into other policies to develop a protocol for staff for if someone does walk in to the library or rec center with a gun. they're also looking into training staff, so they feel

an emergency. the ban discussed in 2013, failed in a 2 to 3 vote. so we'll see where it goes this time, but right now it doesn't look like it would pass. right, thanks a lot forrest. peopleen dubuque will be able to apply or re- apply for gun permits online starting december first. the dubuque county sheriff's office is doing that because it anticipates a flood of applications when people renew their licenses this year due o a ange in iowa law. that law went into effect in 2011, and the permits people got that year will expire next year. dubuque county's chief deputy says re-applying for a permit online is secure. "the safeguards are still in place..he applicants still have to come ttthe law enforcement center to show their identifications and their training certificates. we do still meet with the individual in person. "

the sheriff's departments in pook and black hawk counties have seen favorable results from the online renewal service. people interested should go to the dubuque county sheriff's website after december first. a group of people wants to make sure iowa's doors are open to refugees from all countries. they protested outside the state capitol hoping governor branstad will reverse his stance on syrian refugees. after the terrorist attacks on paris, branstad ordered all state agencies to stop work on resettling syrian refugees. critics of his decisionnaccuse him of fear mongererg. they say they want to make a statement that promotes human rights. " 10:37 why do we have someone in office doing these things? why can't he be more like governor ray who encouraged refugees, opened doors to those great people. " members of the group delivered a letter to governor branstad's office. they hope hehell take time to eet with them and

listen to their concerns. today, anyone who needs one can get a free thanksgiving meal thanks to the salvation army. they expect to serve about 400 people today. rkers and voluueers will serve food from 11:30 thissmorning until 1 this afternoon. that will be at salvation army facility at 1000 c avenue northwest in cedar rapids. you don't have to register before attending. donations to an annual telethon will help feed eastern iowa's seniors. kcrg-tv9 and the heritage agency on aging are getting ready to hold the "fill the plate" telethon next month. these people are enjoying an early thhksgiving meal at the community center, but they're also celebrating the re-opening of the ely senior dining program. the funding from the telethon helped re- open the heritage sponsored meal program.m.it closed because e cost, and government funding is not going up. getting together a couple of times a week is important to these seniors. "they come for the meal, but it's more than the meal. it's again

apart of the community." this year's "fill the plate" telethon will be from 5:00 to 9:00 on sunny, december sixth. you can watch it live on kcrg nine point two. all of the money will benefit the heritage agency on aging's regional nutrition program. that provides hundreds of thousands of meals to eastern iowa's at-risk seeior citizens. homeless people in iowa city will have a place to stay warm in the cold winter months. there's a new emergency shelter but organizers still need to raise some money to stay open all winter long. up nextxt.. this morning's

hillary clinton remains on top with iowa democrats. and those same voters support bringinggyrian refugees to the u-s.. that's according to a new quinnipiac poll this morning. clinton has 51 percent support. 42 percent support bernie sanders. martin o'malley has four percent. these numberer are virtually unchanged from the same poll a month ago.

democrats support accepting syrian refugees into the u-s. 80 percent say iowa should accept refugees. two men running to be waterloo's next mayor have very small differences about how the city should support the local development organization. former mayor tim hurley said he would like to fifid additional funding to attract new businesses. the funding would go to the greater cedar valley alliance and chamber. city council member quentin hart says he supports the existing arrangement. that involves the city paying the alliance 25 thousand dollars per year, and another 25 thousand in incentives for the work it does. that's according to the waterloo cedar falls courier. those positions came after a candidate forum last night. it was the last debate before the final runoff election vote on december first. cedar rapids police are investigating gunfire on the city's s outhwest side. police say it happened at 8-15 last night in the 1200 block of m street. initial reports said one person was hurt. but officers didn't find anyone with injuries. one witness told tv-9 she

" 13:30:29 i was watching tv in my living room. i heard a weird noise that sounded like a firework. i looked out my window and saw a guy pointing a gun in the opposite direction he was standing and i saw the fire come out. 13:30:38 " police say they found several shell casings in the area. shelter hiuse has found a new location for iowa city''emergency winter shelter. this year, it will be run out of this building that southgate companies owns. it's near shelter house, the main homeless shelter. " it's a tremendous relief, now we are just eaar to proceed honestly, we were concerned that the costs were going to be prohibitive and we wouldn't be able to make it this y]ar, but southgate came forward, they were able to donate the space free of rent, and so like i said, we're really relieved and anxious to start moving forward with the program. " they are still looking to raise about 30-thousand dollars to keep the roughly 70-thousand llar project open for 13 weekek this winter. shelter house hopes to open this location by
