putting him over the 270 threshold of electoral votes. he outperformed most of the polling leading up to tuesday's election, beating democrat hillary clinton. a few states have still not been called. he needed the swing states, and he got them. ohio, florida, north carolina. our washington bureau corresponden t ted fioraliso has more on republican donald trump's presidential win. it wasn't until after 2:40 this morning that the race was officially called. donald t the 45th president of the united states. the crowds here went wild when they heard the news flash on the tv screens here. they were waiting patiently all night after battleground after battleground state came in in trump's favor. vice president- elect mike pence took the stage with his family first. that was followed by trump, his family, and all his advisors. trump thanked hillary clinton for a hard-fought campaign and for all her service throughout the years. trump says he wants to heal the divide and bring the

"we will begin the urgent task or rebuilding our nation and renewing the american dream. i've spent my entire life in business looking at the untapped potential in projects and in people all around the world. that is now what i want to do for our country." now the transition begins, and everyone be in a donald trump administration . reporting from trump headquarters in new york, i'm ted fioraliso. iowa voters favored trump over clinton. this marks the first time a republican presidential candidate has won the state since 2004. in winning iowa, trump gained six electoral college votes. once the polls closed, it took only about three minutes for election experts to call iowa's u-s senate race, last night. chuck

though the 83-year-old was favored to win the race from the start -- grassley campaign leaders say, in iowa, there are no guarantees. grassley defeated democrat patty judge with 60% of the vote. the former lieutenant governor got 36%. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders is in des moines. he was covering that race last night. forrest, grassley's large margin of victory was part of a very strong night for republicans. chris, grassley maintainin to allow the party to keep a majority in the senate. judge claimed she was going to be the one to take down the undefeated senator. in the end, she turned out to be just another statistic. nat "what a crowd, what a crowd." and what a win for grassley, now destined to become iowa's longest serving senator, ever. the new hartford

consistently in each reelection since the mid-80s. iowa "now, it's time to get things done. i got to get back to work. we all have to get back to work. god bless you and thank you for all you have done for me." looking at polls before election day grassley's win seemed inevitable. the des moines register had him up 23 points. even so, grassley spent more on this election than at least his last two... why? "this year, more than any other has been unpredictable. so, even in iowa, where a win by chuck grassley as a predictable as the sun coming up... you still had to make sure that with grassley's reelection-- will he now schedule hearings for a supreme court nominee to replace the late conservative justice, antonin scalia. trump presidential win means its highly unlikely the senator will move forward with obama's pick, merrick garland. some things grassley said he wanted to work on in the upcoming term... securing the country's borders. better fiscal discipline fighting terrorism thanks forrest. patty judge says she hopes now that republican chuck grassley has won a 7th term, he puts country before party. judge conceded the race shortly after 10:00 last night. that was after grassley had finished his victory speech. judge told the crowd she was reluctant to enter the race at first but changed her mind after tiring of what she called the political games. she said she was proud of giving the incumbent a hard-fought race. will run in another statewide race in iowa. republican rod blum is representing iowa's 1st congressional district for a second term. he beat out democrat monica vernon. blum won yesterday's election in the northeast iowa district, with 54% of the vote. 46% of people voted for vernon. supporters in dubuque he kept his seat because he kept his campaign promises. blum says he'll continu to stand up to democrats and even his own republican colleagues. he says he'll keep pushing for veteran's issues, social security reform and border security. blum says despite the presidential election, he stayed focused on iowa. "hillary clinton decided to get involved in one house race in the united states of america. this one .... based on what i am seeing, on the national returns, she probably should have focused on her own race and

blum says he will not become a career politician and will continue to push for congressiona l term limits. democrat dave loebsack is returning for a 6th term representing iowa's 2nd congressional district. he defeated republican christopher peters with 54% of the vote, to peters' 46%. kcrg-tv9's jordee kalk spoke with the congressman voters in iowa's 3rd congressional district are giving republican david young a second term. young won his re- election bid over democrat jim mowrer, grabbing 54% of the vote. mowrer had 40%. young was a longtime aide to u-s senator charles grassley before being elected to the house in 2014. republican steve king has been re-elected to an 8th term in the u-s house. he is representing iowa's 4th congressiona l district. king beat democrat kim weaver 61% to 39%.

wide margins ever since his first house election in 2002. in an interview with tv-nine, university of iowa professor cary covington said donald trump's following extended to other republican candidates in this election. " i think trump's wave certainly helped a lot of republicans down ballot. what we thought might be a detriment down the ballot would end up being an advantage. i think rod blum is a candidate who was helped by trump's performance here in iowa." voters have decided to cut the number of supervisors from 5 to 3. you can see there 51% of the votes picked "yes". . 10 years ago, voters decided to increase the number from 3 supervisors to 5. linn county also had a $40 million bond vote on the ballot that focused on water quality. this passed easily. with 100% reporting, 74% approved the measure. it

money aims to improve water quality and mitigate flooding. some would also pay for improving parks and trails. in marion, people approved a measure to change how to elect their city council members. 79% of voters said yes to the change. right now, the entire city votes on three at- large council members and four ward members. this change would only have people voting for three at-large spots, plus one member from their own ward. in iowa city, voters ap signatures needed to bring initiatives in front of the city council. right now, at least 25 percent of the people who voted in the last city election has to sign the document. now that the measure has passed, that percentage of signatures needed drops to 10 percent. around the time that donald trump looked like he would win the presidency, global trading markets started to fall. share prices started falling as soon as trump gained the lead in the electoral vote count. at one point, dow futures

almost done with six days good for fieldwork.. according to the iowa crop progress report.. 86 percent of corn is off the fields.. near the five year average.. moisture content for all grain is at a solid 16 percent.. 95 percent of soybeans are harvested.. about five

average.. south central and south west iowa are struggling to get beans out.. they are weighing down the average at only 80 percent harvested. ---- a domestic fertilizer company says u-s corn is expected to drop by a lot.. c-f industries made the projection to investors this week.. saying corn will be 88 million acres in 2017 from the 94 and a half million the department of agriculture says was planted this year.. a drop that large would be the most sin seven and a half million.. the drop is greater than other projections like informa economics.. two weeks ago.. they estimated corn plantings just shy of 91 million acres.. ---- the grains had a nice rally before the important supply and demand report.. out today.. i spoke to market analyst mike seery just before the close.. "we've been going sideways, i'm currently recommending bullish positions in wheat, soybeans, soy meal, oats. we're

the usda, i think we're going higher across the board, and i'm just bullish, harvest lows soybeans are 93 percent harvested. corn was around 86-87 percent basically got another week and this thing is taken care of and i think the harvest lows are at hand. so be looking to buy at any type of pull back on hand in any of these markets." "i do not have any positions on but i am bearish cattle, very bearish hogs up at these levels i think the price increase up in move higher. now there's some chinese demand at these lower prices. but i am bearish the livestock sector. i am not bearish the commodities. i think in 2017 we're going to see higher prices. also involved in silver to the upside. i just think the commodity giant bear markets are over with. however, expansion in hogs and cattle are just too much and i still think we have

time a republican presidential candidate has won the state since 2004. in winning iowa, trump gained six electoral college votes. kcrg-tv9's forrest saunders joins us now from des moines. he has been talking with the republican party of iowa throughout this election cycle. forrest, what was the atmosphere at last night's watch party? a very excited group of republicans here in des moines. for a number of them, a trump came as a complete surprise. iowa's gop chair, jeff kaufmann, was so elated, he said

kept coming in in trump's favor. earlier in the night he said he was very confident in a trump win in at least iowa. we asked him what he thought a trump presidency would mean for the state. kaufmann said foremost a guarantee that iowa's caucus stays in front of the line during presidential primary season. "donald trump has looked me in the eye and told me that iowa will be first in the nation. i think this completely removes any drama of whether or not iowa is going to be first we also talked to kaufmann o republicans taking overhnate in iour next half hour. back to you. thanks forrest. republican charles grassley is heading back to the u-s senate for a 7th term. grassley defeated democrat patty judge

voters. chuck grassley has never lost an election, starting with winning a seat in the iowa legislature in 1958. he moved to washington in 1974 to serve in the house before joining the senate in 1980. grassley says he will aim to remain a conservative but independent voice in washington. " . i work for you every day, holding at least one meeting in every county every year here at home and casting more than 7,500 votes without missing a vote 23 years in a row working for you. this is an effort to make sure that the principals of representative v patty judge also gave her concession speech last night. we'll have more about why she is proud of her race in our next hour.

congressional district for a second term. he beat out democrat monica vernon. blum won yesterday's election in the northeast iowa district by 30- thousand votes with 54 percent of the vote to vernon's 46 percent. kcrg-tv9's katie wiedeman talked with the dubuque businessman on how he has his sights set on tightening security on the u-s's southern border. rod blum says he believes he kept his seat because he kept his campaign promises. as blum arrived western for his victory party supporters chanted his name. they say that's a name that's now synonumous with the 1st congressional district of iowa. blum says he'll continue to stand up to democrats and even his own republican colleagues. he says he'll keep pushing for congressiona l term limits as well as border security. "we need to secure the southern border. isis is coming through the border. illegible drugs are coming across the border. human trafficking is coming across the border. secure the border. " blum thanked his supporters here in

everyone else did. in dubuque katie wiedemann kcrg tv-9 news. democrat dave loebsack is returning for a 6th term representing iowa's 2nd congressional district. he defeated republican christopher peters with 54% of the vote, to peters' 46%. kcrg-tv9's jordee kalk spoke with the congressman on his plans in washington d-c. jordee: so another two years in d.c. how are you feeling right now? loebsack: well its not what i was hoping to feel i'm going to remain the only democrat in the iowa federal delegation i will continue to work with folks. i'm going to work on the issues i need to , on economic development, education, broadband. making sure we move this economy forward.

jordee: makes sense. in your acceptance speech you really stressed the need to focus on the next presidential election and the next election cycle. what exactly do you mean by this? loebsack: 2018 is coming up in just a couple of years in iowa democrats are going to be thinking long and hard about who we are going to put up for governor who we are going to put up on these races because i believe were on the wrong path. and the governor has done some things that are not good for the state. but i'm confident that democrats can get on the right path again. jordee: what's your goal for the next two years? lo more jobs better jobs better paying jobs that's what i'm going to work towards. that's a big source of the angst and anger that came out of this election and that's how we resolve that issue

majority in the state's senate. iowa senate now holds 30 republicans compared to 19 democrats...wi th an open seat up for election in december. the state's g-o-p picked up six seats. that gives the g-o-p control of both legislative chambers and the and in iowa's house, there are now 55 republicans and 45 democrats. iowa democrats picked up 2 seats. a lot of election results came in overnight, so let's take a look at some of the key races in eastern iowa. in the senate district 30, democratic incumbent jeff danielson, of waterloo, wins against challenger bonnie sadler. danielson gets 59% of the vote. then, in senate district 32, where democratic incumbent brian

challenger. republican craig johnson won 60% of the vote there. that makes up bremer, buchanan and rural black hawk counties. in district 34, democratic incumbent liz mathis, of cedar rapids won against her republican challenger. mathis beat rene gadelha 56 to 44% in one of the more contentious state senate races for 2016. and in district 48, republican incumbent dan zumbach, of ryan, beat out 2 challengers with 63% of the vote. scott peterson, the democrat, earned 33% district 48 covers delaware, northern linn and northwest jones county. again several of those seats going to republicans, helping them get control of the iowa senate. now turning to some of the iowa house results... in house district 55 republican michael bergen beat democrat pat ritter 57% to 43%. that district covers part of winneshiek, fayette, and clayton county. neither one of those candidates have run before. in iowa house 56 which covers

democratic incumbent patti ruff lost to republican kristi hager. hager walked away with 67% of the vote. looking at iowa house district 57. republican shannon lundgren just barley beat and democrat tom stecher . final percentages with 52 to 48 percent. in district 59, democratic incumbent bob kressig, of cedar falls is on his way to victory over republican drew speer. that district is entirely within the city of cedar falls. incumbent walt rogers, cedar falls won re- election over democratic challenger gary kroeger. rogers captured 58% of the cedar falls and rural black hawk county district. the race for district 62 features three candidates out of waterloo. democrat ras smith won with 63% of the vote against republican todd obadal and john patterson, who was nominated by petition. in iowa house district 65, democratic incumbent liz bennett, of cedar rapids, beat her democratic

foster taking 33 percent. republican ashley hinson received 63 percent of the vote to fill the house district 67 seat. speaker kraig paulsen formerly held the seat. he did not seek re- election. republican incumbent ken rizer of cedar rapids won iowa's house district 68. he had 54 percent of the vote over democratic challenger molly donahue's 46 percent. in house district 70, democrat and incumbent todd taylor his challenger, republican steven van fleet ended with 36 percent. libertarian dave cork closed with seven percent. in a race that attracted some attention when the candidates emerged, amy nielsen has won house district 77 -- that's western johnson county. the democratic mayor of north liberty defeated republican royce phillips 57 to 42. in district 95, which covers rural linn and buchanan counties, republican louis zumbach, of coggon, keeps his seat. zumbach defeated democratic challenger richard whitehead 58%

attention in the region. and in district 96 - jones county - republican incumbent lee hein, of monticello, wins again. hein beat democratic challenger matt hanlon by 30 points as hein will return to the iowa legislature. to recap, republicans gain control of the senate -- and maintain control of the iowa house 55 to 45. we'll be right back.
