mubarak is expected to talk to the people anymoment. >> no word when president mubarak will address the nation but we hear it's sometime today. only then will we know if he's stepping down right away or not. here's a live picture of the square in downtown cairo where it's currently 9 p.m. thursday night. demonstrations have taking place every day since january 25th. they erupted in cheers when they said mubarak may be stepping down immediately. just the past 30 minutes president obama addressed it in michigan. >> we've been following egypt very closely and we'll have more to say when this plays out. what is absolutely clear is we are witnessing history unfold. the moment of transformation that's taking place because the people of egypt are calling for change. >> on state tv this morning

video showed about two dozen meeting without president mubarak. a possible sign that both are being pushed out of power. but mubarak and silamar did meet on their own today. no word what they discussed. tonight the crowd was told all your demands will be met. they roared with happiness and excitement but the minister denied that mubarak will resign immediately. it's been a tense 17 days in cairo as you can see last week supporters violently clashed with anti-government supporters killing and injuring hundreds. they have been pushing for a transition government that focuses on fair elections this egypt this september. >> i got the same information you did that there's a strong likelihood mubarak may step down this evening which would be significant in terms of where the hopefully orderly transition

in egypt takes place. >> president mubarak has been in power for 30 years after the popular uprising, he said he would step down but not before the september election saying it would cause more violence and unrest in egypt. if he does resign right away it's still unclear who will take over, the vice president the military. what is clear many egyptians are deleeriously happy that change is coming. let's go to amy hollyfield live in south san francisco. >> yeah. this is our first stop jenelle, because we wanted to come meet with a young man from egypt who now works here and lives here. he tells us he has been working the phones today trying to set up a celebration with his friends. >> there are several facebook.com posts going around saying that mubarak, time to join. saudi arabia, people are really happy. people are really joyful in seeing, you know, this is a really big step in egyptian

history. >> he was born and raised in egypt. he's here in the bay area attending san francisco state. his brother and father have joined in the protests against the regimen and he says he couldn't be happier about today's announcement but also realizes this movement is far from over. >> my concern is only about the vice president taking over. and how will he implement emergency laws again or how he will try to divert the movement and try to lure to other sights. >> a spokesman in san francisco says the group is so impressed with the people of egypt. >> this is tremendously exciting. this is an earth-shaking event a world-historic event that has taken place and its reverberations will go far beyond the boarders of egypt and what we believe will be a very progressive way for the people of the entire region and the

people of the world. >> of course we are hearing concerns about what happens next and what will the u.s. government role be. but right now celebrating this significant step. >> amy thanks very much. oakland police are investigating the shocking sexual assault of a seven-year-old boy. he was attacked at a place where he was supposed to be safe, at a boys and girls club. the three suspects are believed to be other children. terry mcsweeney joins us now on international boulevard. terry, how could such a thing happen? >> well, there's -- these the question that nobody seems to be able to answer right now and police are being very tight-lipped or releasing very little information about this. they can say they have investigators out at the scene out there on international boulevard and this is being treated as a high-priority case as you might imagine. take a look at the scene at the boys and girls club at the international boulevard here in

oakland. here's what police can say. 9:00 last night they were notified that a child seven years old was at oakland children's hospital and was reporting that he had been sexually assaulted in a bathroom at the boys club. the boy was saying this happened about 7:00 last night. police could only say the injuries are non-life threatening. no more than that. the boy said a number of suspects were involved. >> there are multiple suspects and all of those suspects are thought to be under the age of 12. >> did he know who they were? >> i'm not sure as to the relationship. i know that they were all involved in the program at the boys and girls club. >> you know no one noticed even a kid in distress which is kind of what we do. but the young person who i learned just joined our club on the 3rd of this month so about a week ago and even brand new members are family members. we will be reaching out to the family. >> and the boys club president stanley there says there had to be more than a dozen adults and children just outside that

bathroom door. it's a play area and no one noticed any commotion any child crying or dishevelled anything unusual at all. there were also surveillance cameras. police were saying if there were surveillance cameras they would love to take a look at the video. according to mr. stanley at the struggling nonprofit there was no surveillance camera in the location. he does say everybody at the boys club, girls club is going to be cooperating fully with police. mr. stanley by chance is an oakland kid, been affiliated with the club and has never in all those years seen anything at all like this. terry mcsweeney, abc 7 news. >> terry, thank you very much. moments ago a san jose judge ordered a man to stand trial on charges of beating a catholic priest. william lynch is accused of beating father jerry lindner last year at the jesuit center. he said he molested him and his brother more than 30 years ago.

demonstrators gathered outside the courthouse in support of lynch during a preliminary hearing yesterday. more than a decade ago the catholic you church paid more than $600,000 to lynch and hisbrothers over molestation claims. prosecutors say this case is about lend ner's beating not the alleged policy less station. >> police were investigating the city's 9th murder of the year. officers responded to a disturbance call about 5:30 this morning. they discovered a woman that had been stabbed. she was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. police are not releasing any information on a possible suspect. in san francisco police have detained a 31-year-old man while he's being treated in a hospital following an early morning accident that killed one person. look at this. it happened just after 2:00 this morning. witnesses told police a black audi was speeding and running red lights on gary boulevard

when it smashed into other vehicle. the driver of the second car was killed. it rerouted cars and buses on that street for several hours this morning. >> athletic programs may be clearer today. whether men's baseball and rugby, women's lacrosse and men's and women's gymnastics would be reinstated but a university spokesman now says that announcement may be pushed at least one more day. cal chose to eliminate the programs last september to save $4 million a year. a grassroots effort to save the sports has raised 12 to $15 million. >> and just ahead, the solar company that's bringing hundreds of jobs to the peninsula. >> also a new state program that could help hundreds of thousands of homeowners in danger of losing their homes. >> verizon begins selling the new
