7:00 am
good morning america. i'm robin roberts in los angeles. >> and i'm george stephanopoulos, in new york. it's thursday, february 24th. and this morning, trapped in tripoli. the libyan capital fills with gunfire, as desperate americans scrambling to get out, suffer a new setback. sticker shock. the turmoil in the middle east sends oil and gas prices skyrocketing. could it push us into a double-dip recession? a "gma" exclusive caught on tape. this angry coach draws blood on the court. then, draws a suspension. >> i can't believe this happened to me. >> but the player wants even more punishment. this morning, they are both here live. can they reconcile? and only on "gma," the private world of michael jackson's family.
7:01 am
his mother opens up on the hardship of raising his children. and the pop star's eldest son speaks out on following in his father's footsteps. >> i just continue what our dad was doing. good morning, everyone. we're here in los angeles. yes, we're counting down to the oscars. yesterday, george, while i was in town, i had a chance to sit down with katherine jackson, the beloved matriarch, of the jackson family. rare one-on-one interview with her. and michael jackson's three children were there, as well. we'll hear from them coming up. >> can't wait to see more of that. we're going to begin with the latest on the increasing chaos in libya. foreigners are scrambling to get out of the country right now. tripoli airport, just a madhouse this morning. people climbing and shoving to get on planes. high winds and choppy seas have
7:02 am
stranded hundreds of americans trying to leave the country by ferry. moammar gadhafi, the scope of his control over the country is shrinking. his military forces have splintered. many have joined the opposition. and the opposition now, controls the entire eastern half of the country. they're also vowing to liberate the capital, tripoli. our correspondents are covering all of the fast-breaking development, all of the consequences, from the violence in the street to the economic impact here at home. and we begin with alex marquardt in libya. alex? >> reporter: that's right. opposition forces firmly in control on the eastern part of the country. but overnight, gadhafi forces struck back hard in what is increasingly become a bloody revolution. across tripoli, the violence continues to escalate. pro-gadhafi forces shot protesters in the street. here, a bloodied man cries out after his wife was shot in the
7:03 am
head. she was looking out the window. the aging dictator apparently has dug in. using foreign mercenaries to carry out the killings. overnight, two air force pilots ejected from their jet in midair. this shows how the pilots apparently let it crash, rather than bomb protesters in the eastern port city of benghazi. on al-jazeera english, one of gadhafi's trusted lieutenants spoke out against them. >> they are honest people. they will not kill them. killing their cousins and uncles and friends, means they are killing themselves. >> reporter: getting information out of tripoli continues to be all but impossible. residents are too scared to go out on the streets. now, journalists, can't get in. further east anti-gadhafi forces are celebrating. fireworks hit up in benghazi. celebrating control of the second-largest city. it's a dramatic turn from recent
7:04 am
days, when gadhafi sent in fighter jets to attack them. here in the east this morning, we found relative calm. no police or military in the streets. protesters camped out in the main square. they burned the police station and other government buildings. spraying anti-gadhafi graffiti all over town. and displaying a new flag. >> it's for us. >> reporter: the men we met here say they're ready to die to oust him. >> what's civil war? this is revolution. this is not civil war. only the people that are against the regime. the regime makes this war. >> reporter: gadhafi hasn't been seen since tuesday. but his son, sayed, went on tv today, denying the air strikes. saying life has returned to normal in many libyan cities. clearly not the case. robin? >> no, indeed. all right, alex. thank you. and hundreds of americans trying to leave libya are aboard a ferry that was supposed to
7:05 am
depart wednesday for malta. rough seas has delayed their departure. miguel marquez is there with the latest on all of this. good morning miguel. >> reporter: good morning, robin. there is frustration and fear on that ferry in that libyan port just south of here. some people have been there for 24 hours. they may be there another 24 hours because of those rough seas. officials say they are safer in port than trying to get across the 12-foot swells. people at abc news talk to on that ferry, says they feel like sitting duck sitting in that libyan port. meanwhile, the libyan ambassador here in malta, did speak a short time ago. he gave some contradictory information, saying there's no fighting going on in tripoli. and says the country is open to foreign journalists because they want the world to see what's happening there. back to the ferry, when it arrives here in malta, it will be greeted by representatives from the u.s. they will process them here. help them get room shower onward travel from here. and the big question will be because there are thousands of americans in libya, will they
7:06 am
need to put together another ferry to get more americans out? george? >> okay, miguel. thanks. jeffrey kofman spoke to one of the americans stuck in the libyan capital. got him by skype a short time ago. we want to bring in jeffrey right now. it sounds like that man describes an atmosphere of absolute fear. >> reporter: he was so terrified, george, he had trouble speaking clearly at times. let's be clear. this revolution is not over yet. >> everybody's risking their lives. it's having bloodshed, right now. right now. to make a no-fly zone. you know, a fair way of confronting people. you're not allowing any media to come in to see what's going on. you're trying to do this in silence. people are dying in silence. >> jeffrey, you can hear that desperation in his voice right there. understand that actually four of his neighbors were murdered. did he feel like he can even leave the house at this point?
7:07 am
>> reporter: yeah. he is completely terrified. and the reason is this. he says there are gangs of mercenaries driving around tripoli in cars without license plates. these are african soldiers soldiers of fortune, being paid by gadhafi, flown in. they have no connection to libya. and they're ordered to shoot anybody who assembles, anybody against gadhafi. that's why he wants a no-fly zone. there are helicopters and planes that have been flying overhead at random shooting people. he's too terrified to go out. he hasn't been out since tuesday. it's clear what he describes and what's happening in tripoli is completely different from the picture that alex just painted from eastern libya. that half of the country may be out of gadhafi's control. but tripoli is under his control and under the mercenaries' control. >> under their control. and we saws for gadhafi's son, saif
7:08 am
come out again. but it seems like your witness is contradicting that. >> reporter: it's true. he sent his family away. he said he would try to go out today to give us a thorough report. i said please, don't risk your life to do that. there's no information coming into them. he was asking me questions because he simply doesn't know what's happening around him, beyond his own street corner right now. >> he does know that his street corner's dangerous. jeffrey kofman, thanks very much. robin? george you just referred to gadhafi's son. he has eight children. and dictatorship is a family affair. the children are key power brokers. and now, some of them are fighting amongst themselves. martha raddatz has more on this and has news this morning from washington on the gadhafi clan. >> reporter: the gadhafi offspring are becoming more visible. saif talking this morning. and his daughter says she is not
7:09 am
leaving the country. a message the entire family seems to be sending. as moammar gadhafi tries to hold his grasp on libya, we're learning more details about his own family's odd and lavish lives. a wikileaks diplomatic cable calls this dysfunctional family gadhafi incorporated, with all siblings getting big jobs and big money. while other cables paint them as hard-partying, and having provided enough dirt for a libyan soap opera. the family tree has several twisted branches. with eight children in the gadhafi household. the eldest son, mohammed is general of the post telecom company, which operates cell phones and communications across libya. second-oldest son, saif al islam, who vowed his family would fight until the last bullet, was once seen as the front-runner to replace his
7:10 am
father. just last year brother mutassam, also libya's national security adviser, paid beyonce more than $1 million to perform at a party in st. barts. he paid mariah carey $1 million a year earlier. and brother, hannibal, was forced to leave his $7,000 a night suite in this london hotel, after he was accused of physically abusing his wife. ayesha the only daughter of lieutenant general, was part of saddam hussein's 2004 defense team after his capture. recent cables appearing on wiki wikileaks, seems to indicate it is power that gadhafi's sons most want. and constantly battle each other to get it. with libya now on the verge of civil war, it seems power is the last thing the gadhafi family will be able to keep. but expect to see saif gadhafi
7:11 am
more and more in the coming days, george. and perhaps we'll hear from his father later today. >> okay, martha. thanks. we want to get more, now, on how the crisis in libya affects us here at home. the most immediate impact is coming from rising oil prices. they topped $100 a barrel yesterday. and if they continue to climb, could it cause that double-dip recession we all fear. bianna golodryga is here at the smart screen. >> reporter: this is the aha moment we've been waiting for. we told viewers at home to wait for oil prices to rise at home. look at the countries that are oil exporters and producers. libya, ail gear ya iran. iran is the third. and we've seen oil prices spike. over $100 a barrel. we've seen a halt in production barrels of oil a day. saudi arabia said they would step in. why do we continue to see oil
7:12 am
prices rise? it's quality, not quantity, that matters. and libya produces light, sweet crude oil. that's oil used in the production of gasoline. that's why gas prices have spiked over the last month. we could continue to see prices hover around $100 a barrel. and we could see prices hike more than they are now in the coming weeks. we're going to turn to washington now. president obama spoke out about the tense situation in libya. for the first time yesterday, he strongly condemned the violence and said america was prepared to act. >> it's not simply a concern of the united states. the entire world is watching. and we will use our assistance with accountability measures with the international community. >> we'll get more from jake tapper. there was a security council meeting yesterday. jake, what kinds of actions is the white house considering
7:13 am
right now? >> reporter: right now, you can expect to see the administration work closely with the international community. multilateral sanctions through the united nations possible. there's an effort to kick libya off the human rights council. the u.s. will support that. president obama, in those remarks, george did not mention gadhafi by name. after watching gadhafi's unhinged, rambling speech the other night, officials became very concerned this is a guy who might, in the words of one official, burn the house down with him. so, they are carefully calibrating the president's comments and other public comments. they don't want to put a -- feed into gadhafi's world view of a down between him and president obama, they say. it's almost as if president obama is a law enforcement negotiator, talking to a hostage-taker. >> and they are concerned about the americans who haven't been able to evacuate out of libya. not a loft talk of a no-fly zone
7:14 am
from the president. some are calling for that. they want to get gadhafi's airplanes out of the sky. but the u.s. saying it's not really practical right now. >> reporter: it's an issue on the table. but not right now. it's the kind of situation that they would enforce a no-fly zone, if the situation were to become even more dire. it is something they're talking about planning for. but no immediate plans as of yet. >> jake, before you go. we had a big surprise yesterday. the administration announcing the justice department would no longer defend the defense of marriage act, which is a federal law, which bans recognition of same-sex marriage. of course, this was a -- something that was welcomed by the president's supporters in the gay and lesbian community. criticized by some republicans. but what sparked the big change? >> reporter: the second circuit court forced the administration to legally justify in a much more heightened way, their defense of this law. and the administration, which has been defending it for two years, as is the custom to defend laws on the books, said they just couldn't do it
7:15 am
anymore. so, they're not going to defend it anymore. >> jake tapper thanks very much. robin? >> all right, george. i'm going to turn now, to new zealand, where rescue workers are still looking for people alive in all that rubble from tuesday's disastrous earthquake. at least 98 people have died. much of that region without power and water. our clarissa ward has the latest and joins us from christchurch this morning. good morning clarissa. >> reporter: good morning, robin. we just felt another aftershock here. a strange sensation to feel the ground swaying beneath you. there's been dozens of these in the last couple days. and they really put everybody here on-edge, because so many of the damaged buildings are at high risk of collapsing. the search for survivors continues in christchurch. floods of international rescue teams arriving to help. now, police are being strict about how close we can get. but this building behind me used to house a television studio and
7:16 am
also an english language school. and police are now saying up to 120 people are buried beneath that rubble. there's very little hope at this stage that any of them are alive. for the lucky few survivors, a rollercoaster of emotions. rosyln chaplain hid under her desk as her office came down around her. hours later, she was rescued from the debris. >> to get down to the street. to just turn around and look at the building. i just can't believe we made it out of there alive. >> reporter: american laura castrano moved to christchurch a month ago. >> they come so fast. you hear a laud rumble like a truck coming or a train going by. and a split-second later, the ground is moving. you don't know how severe it's going to be. it's very scary. >> reporter: now, this city must begin the daunting process of recovery. >> houses can be rebuilt. but you can't rebuild the lives
7:17 am
that have been lost. >> reporter: and as for the buildings that are still standing, 80% of them have no running water. almost half of them have no power. internet and phone service here is still limited. certainly, this community still has a long struggle ahead. robin? >> yes, they do. clarissa, thank you. let's check in with sam champion for the first time this morning. good morning, sam. >> good morning, robin roberts, how are you, in l.a.? let's start with a little -- 11 states have the possibility of severe weather during the day today. we haven't talked much about that so far this year. here we go. from little rock to memp it likely is going to be strong wind gusts, 07-mile-per-hour wind gusts, but there could be some tornados that pop up here. two areas of rain. this is the one that comes in the morning, along with long line. later on tonight. very heavy rain. in the major these new england, during the day tomorrow. already wind warnings and as
