school in africa and showed the footage of those very happy girls. she was standing in the center of them, and they were laughing and they were sort of dancing, and it just looked like the epitome of hopefulness. the first time i was on "the oprah show," i had a crew of people living basically--they were at my house 24 hours a day. they were there making this kitchen happen from when i'd get up in the morning at 6:00 to the time i'd go to bed at 12:00 midnight. it was amazing. it was a phenomenon. and it so affected my life in so many ways. it's such a special gift that i was given that i will never forget it. oprah, the thing that i will always think about when i think of you for eternity is that you've given people hope and you've given them the idea that no matter where you come from, you can change your life, and

that to me is the greatest gift you could ever give another human being--the ability to hope a hope ality to know that they can change. >> working for "the oprah show" has been the greatest honor of my life. at "the oprah show," it's always first, what's the intention, before how's it gonna read. and that is unprecedented in tv. i've worked on a lot of stories over the last 8 years for "the oprah show," but the one story that continues to live on is an investigation we did into puppy mills. just in time for the summer vacation season, "consumer reports" is out with its new airline rankings. passengers are complaining the most about the uncomfortable seats, no kidding. followed by the excessive airline fees, no kidding. as for which airlines ranks the best, no surprise, i kind of agree with this. southwest comes out on top, then jetblue with alaska airlines coming in third. love me some jetblue. the tv in the back, i'm there. >> i know the seats are absolutely terrible. >> yes. >> unending things to complain about the airlines. also from consumer reports, something i got familiar with over the last couple weeks, we're talking about dieting. >> yes, and you're not alone.

45 million americans go on a diet a year. they spend billions of bucks. >> that's right, and now the diets are being ranked and as lara spencer reports, the top one requires a freezer, microwave and of course motivation. >> reporter: celebrities can do it. >> i've lost over 50 pounds with jenny craig. >> reporter: but for us mere mortals and even the word makes us cringe. >> dieting sucks. >> pain, restriction, lack of fun. >> i'm one of those see food diet things, you know? >> what does that mean? >> when i see food, i eat it. >> reporter: oh. in a surprise win, jenny craig takes first prize over weight watchers and slim-fast. jenny craig earned 85 out of 100 points from "consumer reports" from nutrition, number of pounds lost and having the most dieters stick with the plan for the long haul. >> the fact that jenny craig had such a good compliance and stick-to-itiveness really is a point in its favor. >> reporter: coming in second

with 63 points is slim-fast, and the reason, simplicity. but "consumer reports" found the people also tend to drop out after six months. rounding out the top three, weight watchers, earning 57 points. "consumer reports" deemed the diet the most flexible plan with its points system, but they also found that results were the least impressive. the top three diets all work in very different ways. jenny craig dieters eat a prepared meals. and have a weekly session with a counselor. slim-fast dieters drink a shake for breakfast and lunch. and then are allowed a 500-calorie dinner. weight watchers allows you to eat anything you want as long as you stay within your personalized points system. >> hm. interesting advice there. >> yeah, and it is interesting to see what diet works or doesn't. i just did the 17-day diet. which a lot of viewers did as well. >> i was going to ask about that. >> sort of facebooking about what worked and what didn't. i did get off the sugar and it was nice to get into a contained amount of time. >> you were to get back into your skinny jeans? >> there i go.

news now," surging floodwaters. the mighty mississippi overflowing its banks as it races to the south. >> the flood threat to mississippi and louisiana is now at historic proportions. it's wednesday, may 11th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning, i'm peggy bunker. >> and i'm rob nelson. the huge flood threat to memphis has now passed but across the delta region to the south, some areas are already flooded and farmers' crops could be lost for the season, and believe it or not, the worst is yet to come. some anxious, anxious days along that part of the country. >> you can see some those water levels covering over mailboxes, covering up the entire trunks of trees. it's really incredible.

>> not done yet. >> how much water there is. also coming up this half hour, the airline passenger accused of trying to open the jet's door midflight. his arrest last night and reaction from other passengers. >> scary moments aboard that plane. and later, a lighter story. a teen's very unique way of asking a girl to the prom. well, it backfired. how his special sign which was posted on campus actually got him into some very big trouble. >> can you imagine? for just a sign? very sweet. >> let the kids enjoy the prom. >> that's coming up later. the mississippi delta is now threaten by floodwaters this morning. hundreds of residents have already moved to higher ground. >> thousands of acres of rich farmland could soon be under water. jim avila reports from along the river in tunica, mississippi. >> reporter: the rugged mississippi, often meandering, is now surging towards the delta moving at more than double its normal speed. america's mightiest river is home to coast guard lieutenant brian miller, and the mississippi he sees today is

more ferocious than ever. >> we can see all of the swirls and ebbs and flows, that's really an anomaly for this particular area. >> reporter: the flood walls and levees held in memphis sparing one of the largest cities along the river but now the flood surge is upon tunica, mississippi, where some families are now in shelters, evacuated as the river swallows the town's lifeblood, riverboat casinos and their homes. >> we love it here. we don't want to leave here. we want to go home and we're going to do whatever it takes to stay there. >> reporter: down state in carter, mississippi, the jordin's family store opened for more than 100 years, sin here in 1941, and now fighting to stay open today, still displays the seven-foot watermark of the 1927 floodwaters. >> '27 flood. >> reporter: fears of a second deluge, not since ed's dad was a year old, nearly 85 years ago, have they seen anything like this. the family's 3,500 acres have planted, cotton, soybeans and corn soon to be wiped out.

>> it makes you sick to your stomach. i mean, it's just all for nothing. >> reporter: in vicksburg, mississippi, a civil war battlefield city along the river, floodwaters are expected to keep rising until saturday. and residents are moving to high ground. >> i don't know, i'm just running from the water, stay one step ahead of it. >> reporter: down river in louisiana, preparations are under way for a massive crest in two weeks. this is butte la rose, 40 miles from baton rouge, where prison inmates are helping sandbag operations. prisoners at angola state prison have already been evacuated, moved to tents out of harm's way. the threat of a catastrophic flood now moving south of the delta region, vicksburg, mississippi, is now the next big city which is threatened with floodwaters. they expect to reach the crest there on saturday. jim avila, abc news, tunica, mississippi. the canadian mom who survived nearly two months in rugged terrain has been released from a hospital in idaho. doctors say rita chretien will

continue her recovery closer to her home in british columbia. she somehow managed to survive by rationing trail mix and hard candy for weeks. crews are hoping better weather today will allow them to resume the search for her husband. >> that is amazing. and the u.s. is still waiting to question osama bin laden's three widows now being held in pakistan. but another family member, bin laden's fourth oldest son, is speaking out about the deadly raid. omar bin laden called the killing of his father criminal. also said that his burial at sea humiliated the family. meanwhile, president obama has turned his focus to immigration. visiting the border with mexico to inspect increased security there. the president said new systems are working but that fundamental changes are still needed. karen travers has more. >> reporter: president obama came to the u.s./mexico border to see firsthand the stepped up security measures and send a message back to washington. >> everybody recognizes the system's broken. the question is, will we finally summon the political will to do something about it?

>> reporter: congressional republicans remain firmly opposed to legislation that has a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants. >> the president will have to present a plan that takes amnesty off the table and focuses instead on making a real commitment to border and and internal security. >> reporter: the president said, that's already been done. >> we have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement. >> reporter: those efforts, mr. obama said, include millions of dollars for new fencing, doubling the number of border agents since 2004, and maintaining aerial patrols from texas to california. the white house says these steps have discouraged illegal crossings. the number of arrests along the border has dropped by half since 2006. republicans dismiss the president's renewed focus on

immigration as pure politics. in 2008, mr. obama won two-thirds of the hispanic vote. next year that voting bloc could be critical to holding on the states like florida, new mexico, and nevada. >> the president's challenge will be to communicate to latino voters, yes, i am working for you, yes, i am fighting for you. >> reporter: karen travers, abc news, traveling with the president in el paso, texas. and here is a scary story now. a delta airlines passenger was arrested after trying to open up an emergency door midflight. an off-duty police officer subdued the passenger and held him, this while the plane continued on its journey from orlando to boston. fellow passengers say that the suspect appeared to be drunk. >> the flight attendants, they actually brought him to the back of the plane and put him in between two different people so that he couldn't get up or anything. he was wearing a bruins shirt. i saw him in orlando. he asked me to go to the bar with him. very intoxicated. >> the second time in the past week that a passenger has tried to open up an emergency door midflight. it looks like no passenger

is too young when it comes to airport screening. this picture popped up on twitter showing two tsa agents patting down a baby. the incident took place last saturday at kansas city international airport. a tsa statement says, "the officers involved followed proper current screening procedures on the family after the child's stroller alarmed during explosives screening." the tsa has been reviewing its policies regarding young passengers. there's proof this morning that parents' marital problems can actually have an impact on children's health at a very early age. the results of the study just released showing children 18 months old can actually have trouble sleeping when their parents' relationship seems unstable. the problems can also compound having impact on a child's social, emotional, and behavioral health. so a lot of parents perk up over that story. you think so young, they don't understand what is going on but it does show that it actually has an impact. >> forgive your husband for his mother's day!

jefferson davis park sits with some pretty nice bike paths. >> reporter: 4 million people down river from memphis are bracing for the mighty and now raging mississippi, moving at more than double its normal speed. >> the velocity is much faster than is typical, and also a lot of the landmarks that we're used to seeing are not here. >> reporter: now, memphis did dodge a pretty soggy bullet when the river crested at about 2:00 tuesday morning. still there are several dangers in this water that could linger for weeks. chemicals, sewage, electric currents, and even dangerous reptiles like water moccasin snake are presenting quite a problem for folks here. >> it's not water for swimming, it's not water for drinking and i wouldn't want anybody to go in it. >> reporter: the flood surge is now upon tunica, mississippi, where some families are in shelters. evacuated as the river swallows riverboat casinos and their homes. >> we love it here. we don't want to leave here. we want to go home and we're going to do whatever it takes to stay. >> reporter: further south in carter, mississippi, the jordan family's general store still displays the seven-foot the family's 3,500 acres of planted cotton, soybeans and corn, soon to be wiped out.

proper current screening procedures on the family after the child's stroller alarmed during explosives screening." agency acknowledged that it is exploring ways to move beyond though a one-size-fits-all system. a delta air lines passenger is in custody after police say that he tried to open an emergency door in flight. an off-duty police officer subdued the passenger and then detained him. this while plane continued on its journey from orlando to boston. state police were waiting when that flight landed. those on board of the plane say that the man appeared to be drunk. well, what a difference two years makes, especially for general motors. >> after a government bailout saved gm from bankruptcy, the automaker has announced it is back on track and investing in production, also investing in jobs. john hendren now has the very latest from washington. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, rob and peggy. gm has come roaring back from bankruptcy. it was $3.2 billion in the black last quarter, and now it's putting out the help wanted signs. general motors is out of reverse, shifting into high gear and on pace to overtake the world's largest automaker. >> it's not only good for the future of general motors, it's good for the united states of america.

such a high rate of referrals. that was really surprising to us. >> reporter: this doctor recommended meditation to his patient, who had stage 2 lymphoma. and was too claustrophobic to endure the treatments. >> it was beautiful that my mind was able to control my heartbeat, my breathing, my relaxation. >> reporter: researchers say meditation doesn't just relax you, it can physically change your brain. earlier this year a harvard study looked at people who took a mere eight-week course in meditation and found that these two parts of their brains associated with self-awareness and compassion actually grew while this part associated with stress shrank. there are lots of different kinds of meditation but kinds that most doctors recommend does not involve wearing robes, chanting, lighting incense or joining a religious group. what it does involve is three very basic steps. step number one, sit comfortably. step number two, focus on your

well, we've all heard the postal service of course is in some big financial trouble and now we know just how bad it is. the postmaster reported a $2.2 billion loss during the first quarter of this year. money is so tight the postmaster warns that if congress does not allow more borrowing the postal service may default on some of its federal loan payments. mail delivery will likely continue on schedule, but future retiree's health benefits could now be on the line. >> oh, boy. move to some good economic news. general motors is now putting $2 billion back into production. the automaker is creating thousands of jobs and that means that many laid off employees could be going back to work. linsey davis has the story. >> reporter: the idea that general motors is on its way back to running on all cylinders means preston is about to be, too. he's been laid off by the auto giant three times and he's hoping any day now to get his third letter to come back to work. >> when you get that letter you get a sense of ease where you know you're going back to a place that's -- that can really provide for your family.
