>> late spring snowstorm forces organizers to cancel the amgen tour. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. topping the news, santa cruz man who was nearly beaten to death following a giants game with the dodgers is headed back to the bay area today. he has been in a medically induced coma since the attack. amy hollyfield is live at san francisco general hospital. that is where he'll be transported today. >> he'll be here this morning. he'll be treated by the team of neurosurgery that specialize in brain and spinal cord injuries. he has opened his eyes. they say that is a good sign, but he is still in critical condition. stow was attacked in march as he was leaving a giants-dodgers

game in l.a. his attackers were wearing dodgers' jerseys and stow was wearing a giants shirt. the family is glad to have him home. they do consider it a good sign he can be moved to san francisco, but they realize he has long road ahead of him. >> we have indications long road to recovery, over a year of rehab. so we're prepared to take that next step with brian definitely. >> police are still looking for the two men who attacked him. here is the sketch they are work from. they have based on witness descriptions. police in l.a. will be holding a press conference tomorrow to update the investigation. the family says as happy as they are coming home to the bay area they are a little sad to be leaving l.a. saying that their friend at the hospital the nurses and the doctors have all

been amazing. live? san francisco, amy hollyfield "abc 7 news". >> kristen: chp is investigating what caused a four-car collision on the golden gate bridge. they shut down the bridge around 8:00 p.m. three people were taken to the hospital. all four vehicles had major front end damage. they continue confirm the head-on collision but there will be a movable median barrier in place to prevent those trashes krarbs in the future. >> eric: five suspects are suspected to be in court this morning. one was shot near mason and gear any ri in august. they arrested them two weeks ago. two of suspects are juveniles. at least one of them will be tried as an adult.

>> kristen: a little bit of good news as governor brown gets set to unveil his budget in an effort to rae the $15 billion deficit. they have new projections for the fiscal year beginning in july. revenue for state as of the end of april was more than $2 billion above forecasts. governor brown may announce he'll postpone asking for higher income tax rates until next year but he'll ask for extension of the sales tax and vehicle fee increases to avoid further cuts. >> eric: thousands of california teachers of waking up this morning wondering if they'll have a job the next school year. they have until yesterday to give final notices to teachers informing them they'll be laid off. they sent out preliminary layoff notices to 20,000 teachers. some of the positions were saved but many were not.

districts could rehire teachers depending on the final budget but some lawmakers that education could lose up to $5 billion in state funding. >> kristen: this morning pg&e will resume pressure testing in antioch. the company says residents might smell natural gas as before testing begins. they will pump water into the section being tested and pressurize to a higher level than it would ever operate using natural gas. any leaking sections of pipeline will be replaced. they ordered the tests after the deadly pipeline explosion in september. new rules tamed the crowd at bay to breakers but they still made arrests. there was a serious incident where a man fell 30 feet from a home suffering life-threatening injuries. police took away any booze they

saw. the crowd behaved hch much better. >> people came up to us and asked would you recycle in this morning? >> they arrested 17 people for public intoxication but overall race organizers they declared it a success. organizers of the amgen tour will again try to start the event yesterday's first leg was cancelled due to snow in may. a reporter talks to disappointed racers and fans. >> before the cyclist can even cross the starting line mother nature had already won the race. >> we got all excited and it was cancelled due to road conditions. >> reporter: it left snow and

slush and freezing water on the road scaring even the most experienced cyclist. >> it's wet and cold and risk of crashes and falling off the edge of the road. there is no guard rails. >> reporter: they were looking forward to racing in his backyard today. how weather got in the way. >> i am excited, it was kind of a disappointment. you have to realize you can't race in this kind of weather. it doesn't matter how bad you want it. it's not safe. >> reporter: it's not just the cycleists. fans from all over the world waited a high altitude guessing game in freezing temperatures. first, the course was shortened then moments after the national anthem the race ended before it got a chance to start. >> i was bummed. >> obviously it's rider safety.

>> kristen: the amgen tour comes to the bay area on wednesday with stage four from livermore to san jose. so it might rain this week? >> eric: what chances do they have? >> good morning from south lake tahoe to sacramento it's clear and remain clear through the morning hours around 4:00 this afternoon rain and higher elevation snow will develop. winter storm warning in effect for the western slope of the sierra from 4:00 to 5:00 tomorrow morning. earlier they get out the better off they will be being dry and not seeing any snow. after 4:00 all bets are off. you can see how quiet it has become as yesterday's rain has moved away. left side of the screen you see the deeper white cloud mass that is the next rain coming in. a few skuavtd showers this

morning, temperatures in the low 40s around fairfield to mid to upper 40s in our valleys to 43 in los gatos and near 50 around everybody else for the bay and the coast. by the afternoon rain coming down. it will be a steady rain with temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. we'll have a steady rain moving into the monterey bay with the same type of temperatures. tomorrow more showery in nature and by wednesday it's gone. by thursday and friday temperatures are back to average but a cooling trend begins over the weekend. good morning. >> good morning. a new accident reported in mountain view south 101 in highway 85. it looks like it will clear quickly. antioch eastbound 4 we ast whole freeway shut down from leverage to summersville and that is going on for the next hour until 5:30 this morning. better news about that crash in oakland i mentioned.

arrangement on charges of sexually assaulting a hotel maid. police say she picked him out of a line-up. >> dominique strauss-kahn was supposed to be in buries they also morning. he is expected to appear in a new york courtroom to several charges. his troubles started saturday night when he was plucked out of a plane headed for paris. he headed the imf was staying in a posh $3,000 a night hotel where the housekeeper came to clean his room. he attacked the maid and drived him off before she broke free and escaped. >> his attorney says he is

spring has taken over at least temporarily. that is good news as far as getting rid of any kind of severe weather. we may have flight delays because of the low clouds. flight tracker at abc7news.com. >> eric: time is 4:48. massachusetts senator john kerry met with pakistan's prime minister and plans to meet with the president after tensions following the death of osama bin laden. he is delivering a list of specific demands that pakistan has been harboring militants carrying the first emissary since the raid that killed bin laden. relations between the two countries have been strained since navy seals conducted the raid on the compound without informing the pakistani government first. >> back here in louisiana a lot of towns are just about empty as people continue to move to higher ground away from

mid-50s. temperatures running about 10-15 degrees cooler than average. you can see the shape to the wall of water that comes in. notice the snow that develops around mt. shasta down the sierra down to yosemite where at the base is 61. any warm weather go to palm springs about 75 degrees. bring it back home tonight 50 in san francisco oakland and antioch. everybody else in the mid to upper 40s and notice some light rain showers will continue during the overnight hours. here is a look at the system diving through this trough and cold air that it brought with us. today is steadier rain because of the warm front that gradual lifting of the moisture and because of that it creates those long duration showers of the warm air that rises over the dome of cold air. you can see this morning just a few showers. then watch at noon and all the way through the afternoon and

south is fine out of san francisco and always get the latest by going to our website at abc7news.com. click on the bay area traffic link. >> eric: it's 4:55 now. in the stanley cup playoffs the sharks lost the opening game of their western conference final to the canucks. they had the lead 2-1 after patric marleau redirects a dan boyle shark into the net but they couldn't hang on. canucks scored two goals within two minutes and sharks tried to even things up for game two on wednesday night. >> kristen: pot clubs are bringing in big bucks. san jose's finance department has released figures showing that medical marijuana dispensaries paid $290,000 in taxes in march. that was the first month the

taxes went into effect. this is good news for the city which is facing $115 million budget deficit. however the windfall could be short-lived. they voted to limit to 100 pot clubs to just ten. >> eric: a new medical center in burlingame 11 years and $618 million after the project began. the hospital began moving patients from the old facility yesterday. they will slowly be transferred over to the new building. new facility including up graith grades like wireless patient monitoring and fold out couches for visiting family members. it's designed to remain fully operational even after a making any truth 8.5 earthquake. >> kristen: next a hearing that could determine if riding a cab in san francisco is about to get even more expensive.
