good morning, america. this morning, rising from the rubble. shocking, new video taken just moments after the joplin tornado hit. >> sara? sara? mike? >> as residents search for their families. and look at this. a rescue you just have to see. one dog rescuing another from the rubble. the great escape. this is it. the unofficial start of summer. and millions of people are hitting the road. this morning, the new costs of travel this year. and how to beat them. showdown on the stand. casey anthony's father is back on the stand in a contentious back and forth with his daughter's lawyers. they say he helped cover up his granddaughter's death. but can they prove it? and one word.
7:01 am
gaga. she rocked central park in a concert so epic, we have to show you even more of it. this grand entrance was just the beginning. get ready for even more lady gaga. wow. what a concert. we're still talking about it this morning. it's on the cover of the new york papers here. going gaga for summer. this was an amazing show. >> it was one of the most amazing things. when you look at this video and remember, she grew up blocks away from central park. what a thunderous return. >> and she had such a great interview with robin and george. talking about her love for her fans and the dedication they've shown her. and thousands of fans showed up. it was "gma's" largest turnout in three years. >> one song you didn't get to see. we'll show you this morning. also, whatever you have planned for this holiday

weekend, whether you're hitting the beach, the mountains or just hanging out around the house, we have your summer survival guide. one great way to cool off, dan harris, ice cream. >> nice. >> we ask, can you make an ice cream sundae that tastes great and is less filling? and what's the difference between slow-churned and low-fat? ice cream secrets coming up. >> we'll have some healthy treats on a saturday morning. also, ice cream will raise your bad cholesterol. this morning, there's a new study that's out that's upending what we previously knew about good cholesterol and how it helps your heart. what you need to know about a fascinating medical story, coming up. we're going to begin with this. take a look. this is a live shot of the beach in ft. lauderdale, florida. millions of you are trying to get to a place just like this memorial day weekend. but despite high gas prices, 31 million americans are hitting the highway to get away. and david kerley is out on the road in vienna, virginia. good morning, david. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. if folks are just heading out,
7:03 am
may they have missed the best deal on gasoline. we'll have more on that in a moment. the good news is, if you're just hitting the road, it's going pretty good. you may have missed the worst of the traffic. >> you slow up on those ramps. >> reporter: some of the nearly 31 million americans expected to hit the road found slow going in the great holiday escape. even though gas prices are 41% higher than last year, drivers want a warm vacation. >> this winter, even the spring for a lot of us, you know, we're ready for a vacation. we're seeing the top-ten destinations for memorial day weekend, three of the up-and-comers this year were warm weather destinations. >> reporter: what's a little surprising is more people are flying this year. >> i could drive there and back for the price i got my ticket for. >> reporter: an 11% increase in fliers. >> we decided to do this with family, in spite of the cost and the economy. >> we don't have a go-go economy. but it's not a don't-go economy. >> reporter: while many are
7:04 am
hitting the beaches, they are still skiing in the mountains in the west. crews had to clear campgrounds of snow for campers. those on the road will be looking for the best deal on gasoline. a study abc news has just completed could drive you in the right direction and bring you home with some change in your pocket. we looked at 5,100 stations in 4 metropolitan areas last month. we found if you drive one minute, one mile away from a highway exit, past that station right there when you get off the exit, you may save 11%, 7 bucks a tank. if you're a warehouse club member, sam's or b.j.'s, mark their locations. you'll save 3%, a little more than 2 bucks a tank. urban cities, boston and chicago, had higher prices than just outside of town. but big, suburban areas, including orange county, california, and jacksonville, florida, had higher prices near the beach. one other tip we found.
7:05 am
this was last month. if you bought gas on friday morning, it was cheaper than saturday morning. that's when they bump up the prices the most. prices are going down. maybe, dan, you can get a deal on a saturday morning. >> thanks for the advice. we appreciate it. this is not a relaxing holiday weekend in joplin, missouri, where they're still looking for the missing after that massive tornado. there's already signs of recovery and some reasons for hope. our matt gutman is in joplin, missouri, this morning. matt, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. amidst all of this wreckage and debris that you see, there really is some new rebuilding here. this is going to be a hair salon. it started just a couple of days ago. when we came, that roof hadn't yet been put on. this morning, it's already there. they hope to finish this place in 45 days. the pace of rebuilding and resilience that's incredible, just after that tornado. >> sara? >> these are the terrifying few
7:06 am
seconds just after the tornado. >> sara? mike? >> reporter: aaron eventually found his sister and her boyfriend alive. many others weren't so lucky. that search for the missing continues. joplin is slowly coming back. the sounds of rebirth. mangled trees being cut back. the skeletons of buildings being hauled away. and this, joplin's first new construction. >> we're trying to get on with our lives. >> reporter: and we're finding reunions, but not always of the human variety. about 500 pets have been taken to this aspca center. >> you know, she was. part of a family. so, we're happy we found her. >> reporter: just last night as we were walking in, we saw miranda christensen's reunion with lucy. miranda had feared the worst. >> anybody alive? >> reporter: in oklahoma, this amazing scene.
7:07 am
a dog trying to find human remains, instead, finds a fellow canine very much alive. >> come on. >> come on. >> we found dogs as far as ten miles away. after a few days, many of the animals will migrate back to where their homes were. >> reporter: exactly what mason did after a tornado devastated tuscaloosa. crawling for weeks on a pair of broken legs, just to return to his old back porch. guys, it's not just reunions but unions. remember aaron cox at the top of the piece, yelling for sara and mike. well, he's getting married today. pretty incredible that life goes on in all of this destruction here. >> good news for those, as well. matt, thank you. we appreciate it. we're going to switch gears now, where court will be in session for a fifth day after dramatic testimony at the murder trial of casey anthony, the florida woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. yesterday, a witness testified
7:08 am
about a powerful odor coming from anthony's car. ashleigh banfield was in the courtroom in orlando. >> reporter: the day started out well for casey anthony, as her future sister-in-law took the stand and tearfully described a great relationship between casey and caylee. >> casey and caylee had a very special bond. >> reporter: it brought casey to tears. but the raw emotion gave way to pure tension, as prosecutors zeroed in on a foul stench that was found in casey's car. >> the instant flash in my mind was, i know what that smells like. >> reporter: simon burch worked the impound lot where casey anthony's car was towed. >> after the door was opened, the smell came out, very intently. >> have you ever had the opportunity to come across a vehicle in which there had been a dead body? >> yes, ma'am. >> reporter: compelling as he was, the defense launched an attack. >> you knew there was a missing child. >> yes, sir.
7:09 am
>> and you knew there was a foul odor in the trunk of the car? >> yes, sir. >> you never called the police? >> no, sir. >> reporter: and for the third time in a week, casey's dad took the stand. >> as you approached the vehicle, did you smell anything? >> i did smell a pretty strong odor. >> was in a the odor of a human corpse? >> yes. but i said, please, god, don't let this be casey or caylee. >> reporter: across the courtroom, where there were tears before, there were no tears now. and when casey's lawyer took aim at her father, accusing him of covering up evidence, fireworks flew. >> trying to trick me. you're not going to trick me. >> reporter: it had become an ironic friction. the man enlisted to save his daughter's life, could at the same time be ruining his. for "good morning america," ashleigh banfield, abc news, orlando. let's get more on this, now,
7:10 am
with "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. good morning. thanks for coming in. this odor testimony. how important is that? >> it's important. i don't know if it's going to be the most important piece of testimony in the case. but there's no question they're trying to put together a puzzle, right? they're trying to create the circumstantial evidence, which is the way she was behaving in the days after her child died. and then, put, on top of that, the car and the odor and the lies and the duct tape, et cetera. so, each piece by itself may not be the sort of smoking gun. but prosecutors hope that together it creates a compelling case. >> as you and i were watching the story air, you pointed out that the prosecutors keep calling her father back to the stand repeatedly. that's unusual. >> that's really unusual. usually you call a witness. you ask him about everything. and occasionally, much later in the case, a new issue comes up, you call him back. prosecutors have now called george anthony to the stand three, different times. why? it seems that they want these
7:11 am
jurors to come to know george anthony. why? because the defense's whole strategy is pointing the finger at him. making him the villain. he's the guy where the defense is saying sexually abused casey as a child. and that's led her to lie all these years, et cetera. so, with him as the villain on the defense's part, by the prosecution consistently calling him, i think that they're trying to say this is someone who you can trust. this is someone who you can't believe what the defense is saying about him. et cetera. >> at some point, does she have to testify? >> i wouldn't have said yes, except for what the defense has become. meaning, when the defense is the reason that she behaved the way she did after her child died, the reason we think george anthony may have disposed of the body. i think then casey does have to testify. otherwise, they're going to have promised something in the opening statement that they don't deliver upon during the
7:12 am
case. she's the only one that can do it. the problem for her, if she testifies, she's going to have to explain each and every one of those days, where her child is dead. >> and she's out -- >> she's out shopping. out partying. she's hanging out with friends and she's not reporting it. that's going to be a very difficult cross-examination. >> dan abrams, always fascinating to have you on. let's get the latest on the morning headlines now with ron claiborne. >> good morning, everyone. the race for the 2012 republican presidential nomination could soon get a couple of new high-profile and unexpected candidates. after months of saying he has no interest in being president, texas' governor, rick perry, says he will consider a run for the white house. perry is the longest-serving governor in texas history and has strong, conservative credentials. there's also signs that former new york city mayor, rudy giuliani, may jump in the race. he is heading to new hampshire next week. and nato has launched air strikes over libya.
7:13 am
explosions rocked the capital of tripoli this morning, with columns of smoke being seen over the city. russia is agreeing to mediate a deal for moammar gadhafi to leave the country and end the fighting. we have some answers about the air france jet that mysteriously crashed into the atlantic ocean nearly two years ago. the recently recovered black boxes showed that the pilots lost their speed readings. probably due to icing and led to confusion in the cockpit. the plane plunged 38,000 feet in less than 4 minutes, killing 228 people onboard. and the legendary musician and poet gil scott-heron has died. he is probably best known for the song "the revolution will not be televised." also an inspiration for rap music. referred to as the godfather of rap. scott-heron also struggled with drug addiction. he died in a new york hospital. he was 62 years of age. and finally, even if you hate cats -- hi, there. >> who hates cats?
7:14 am
>> there are hard-hearted people who do not like cats. even they, bianna, might find it in their hearts to like this kitten. the kitten appears to be having a nightmare, where when its mom pulls it in for a big hug. it's the latest hit on youtube. it's been viewed more than 4 million times in just two days. 2 million times by dan harris. just keeps hitting it over and over and over. >> and let the record show, there's a difference between hating an animal and being allergic to an animal. >> that is correct. >> i don't hate. >> thank you for clarifying that. jackie meretsky, help me here. >> ron, that was a good one. that was really good. i, by the way, am not a cat hater. let's switch gears and talk about holiday weather. not everyone had a smooth start to the holiday weekend. take a look atwoodbridge, virginia. this is about 20 miles south of washington, d.c., where 50-mile-per-hour to 60-mile-per-hour winds toppled down power. knocked out power, actually. 2,000 trees came down. and they're going to get much
7:15 am
better weather today thankfully. let's look at numbers. these are not air temperature numbers. these are ocean temperatures. if you're jumping in the ocean down in florida, beautiful. 82 for your ocean temperature. just off miami beach. however, from long island up to northern new england, it is chilly. you will need a wet suit. i want to tell you one thing about the west. northern california getting an additional eight to ten inches of snow.
7:16 am
bianna? >> jackie, thank you. a new study is shaking up the thinking on how we treat heart disease. we all know we have good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. and the higher the good cholesterol, the less likely you are to have a heart attack. many doctors prescribe a drug to increase your good cholesterol. so, that should help reduce the risk, right? but a new study says it does nothing to prevent heart attacks. and this will be a big battle to fight heart disease. joining me to talk about this is dr. lynne perry-bottinger. good morning. good to see you. thanks for coming in. >> thank you, briana. >> how big of a surprise is this study? >> we've known for years that patients who had high hdl, high good cholesterol, have an inverse relationship with heart disease. so, lower risk of heart disease, stroke. we know the main risk factor for heart disease is a high low dense protein. lousy cholesterol. bad cholesterol.
7:17 am
and so, this study, that was stopped early by the national institutes of health, they had about 3,000 patients. and they had patients taking statins to lower the bad cholesterol. on top of that, they gave the patients niaspan, niacin, an extended release version. if we could lower the bad cholesterol and increase the good cholesterol, we could have cardio protection. but it didn't turn out that way. >> does this mean that doctors will stop focusing on raising the good hdl? >> we will probably still focus on it. but giving a drug to give a biochemical change in a lab result does not portend to a good clinical outcome. >> even drinking red wine was recommended. >> and you're still going to hear about exercise. the good thing about exercise is
7:18 am
you don't get the calories you do from red wine. unfortunately, the amount of red wine you have to drink to make a significant difference on your good cholesterol would probably not be so good for calories and diabetes. >> quickly, before we end here. we have to note this has nothing to do with those who want to lower their bad cholesterol. those taking lipitor, they should still take those medications. >> exactly. even patients who are on a statin and niacin together should discuss with their doctor whether they should continue this. niaspan does lower cholesterol a little bit. >> rather surprising study. we appreciate you coming in and telling us more about it. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> dan? i'm not sure how this is going to impact his cholesterol. but mark zuckerberg has made an interesting dietary decision. the 27-year-old founder of facebook says he's only going to eat meat from animals he personally killed. this is not quite as grim as it sounds.
7:19 am
here's barbara pinto. >> reporter: he started facebook in his dormroom at harvard. inspired a hollywood hit film. >> i'm talking about taking the entire social experience of college and putting it online. >> reporter: now, mark zuckerberg is a confessed killer. don't panic. we're talking about dinner here. the only meat i'm eating is from animals i've killed myself, said zuckerberg, in an interview with "fortune." >> last year, he had a pig roast. and his friends who he had over to his house didn't really appreciate the fact the pig was once alive. and he claims he started thinking about this. and he thought this was kind of socially irresponsible. >> reporter: the king of social media apparently displaying his social conscience. this latest lifestyle change was revealed, of course, in a posting on facebook, that said, i just killed a pig and a goat.
7:20 am
it's the latest of what zuckerberg calls his personal challenges. last year, he decided to learn mandarin chinese. the year before, he wore neck ties every day. a self-imposed dress code. this year, a beutjer dresses what zuckerberg kills. so far, chickens, pigs and goats. >> what's next for mark zuckerberg? he's actually very interested in going hunting. >> reporter: food, now food for shot. for "good morning america," barbara pinto, abc news, chicago. >> i just have an image of "lord of the flies" and mark zuckerberg. >> just north of the right age for that. coming up, a harrowing story caught on tape. dramatic new video of a s.w.a.t. team raiding the home of a farmer marine in tucson opening fire. 71 rounds in all. should they have used such deadly force in this case? this is a huge debate this morning. and on the first weekend of summer, ice cream secrets. is it possible to have a sundae loaded with toppings but not the calories?

7:40 am
>> thank you, dan. >> you're welcome. on the ice cream cartons, we see things like light, low-fat, fat-free. does any of it mean anything? >> absolutely. those three terms are actually fda-regulated. they do mean something. light ice cream basically means one-third fewer calories and half the fat of a full-fat version. that can really mean something. some of the ice creams have a lot of calories. up to 260 calories. that might be one-third of the calories. >> when you hear slow-churn, what does that mean? >> well, first, wait a minute. low-fat is another term that's meaningful. that's three grams of fat per serving. and no-fat doesn't mean no fat at all. it's half a gram per serving. and a serving is half a cup. >> we always eat more. >> if you're eating more than half of a cup, like you do probably, that can add up to some fat there. and slow-churned, a lot of reduced-fat ice creams have that on the label. it means something, too. basically, it means, they churn it up and break down the fat in the ice cream. it gives it a creamier, you know, richer texture. >> there's not fat-free? >> actually, no.
7:41 am
there's actually not. >> you can lower your fat and calorie intake by changing the waffles that you eat, right? >> that's right. the cones are really important. and eating your ice cream out of the dish is a good idea so you don't overdo it. cones can range up to 160 calories. so, the waffle cones is a dessert in itself. but those cupcake cones are only 15 calories. you're going to go with a cone, those are the ones to go through. >> i go straight from the carton. >> is this a serving? >> that's several servings worth. >> okay. >> half a cup. a serving is half a cup. look at the calories on the container, remember that. >> so, we're going to make sundaes now. and you're going to judge us on this. >> i'm going to help you make smarter sundaes. the toppings really do make a difference. you're going to have 30 seconds to make sundaes. so, i'm going to say, ready, set go. you'll have 30 seconds. i'm going to judge you ice cream. >> if i make bianna's more fattening, do i get points? >> ready, set go. >> whipped topping. >> what are you doing? >> i know. >> hold on. here.
7:42 am
♪ >> back off. back off. >> all right. >> ron. >> three, two, one. >> ron, that's a good-looking sundae there. all right. >> i poured the entire butterscotch caramel into bianna's. >> you have to eat it now, you know. >> in terms of the toppings, i see some chocolate sauce and caramel. that's a whole lot of caramel sauce. but chocolate sauce, 65 calories for 1 tablespoon. caramel sauce is 55 calories. >> say that again. >> 65 calories for 1 tablespoon. >> tablespoon?
7:43 am
>> yeah. >> one person's overdoing it is another person's just right. >> what about the whipped cream? >> sprinkles versus nuts? who has nuts? and who has sprinkles? >> i have both. >> both. >> yours looks like actual, grown-up sundaes down there. nice. >> that's not too bad. >> i didn't ask dan. >> the best topping is a little bit of whipped cream. maybe a cherry. the reddi-whip is only 15 calories for a couple of squirts. if you want some chocolate on there, our tip is take a chocolate bar and put some shavings, using a cheese grater on top. >> what about nuts? >> you know how aggressive ron was? >> how aggressive i was? >> break it up, people. >> i think all of that caramel is naughty. >> lisa, i don't like you anymore. you've been a terrific help. thank you for coming in. really appreciate it. thanks. we're going to be right back with lady gaga. keep it here. ron, don't touch my sundae. come on.
