out. san francisco police officers are seriously injured overnight after a major crash. concern over potentially ex-exploding containers has virtually shut -- shutdown the port of oakland. looking from vollmer peak winds gusting to 25 miles per hour. red flag warning in effect high fire danger rain and cooler weather on the way >> still not a bad ride as you make your way to the bay bridge toll plaza. accident in san francisco affecting surface streets details coming up it happy tuesday 6:01 thanks for joining us i'm kristen sze. i'm eric thomas. developing news. richmond firefighters are trying to figure out out why a home exploded overnight and several managed to get out alive. amy hollyfield joins us live near the intersection of ohio half and 38th street.

amy, first they were talking a gas leak has that been ruled out? >> reporter: pg&e can't find evidence of a gas leak. i spoke with two of the men sleeping they felt they got jolted by a huge earthquake. it wasn't a quake it was an explosion. it blew out this way there's gas all over the front yard and the window shades are all over here may it to the curb. check out the side of the house you can tell the blast must have been in that area. look at that wall blown off the side of the house. firefighters tell us it looks worse in the back of the house. they received a call 2:20 this morning someone called and said there had been an explosion inside the house. four people were inside. firefighters found all of the men on the sidewalk they appeared to be in shock. they estimate they are all in their 40s. one man we met had singed hair and eyebrows and a burn on his

leg. he is on the phone with his insurance company. he's in shock. he is not ready to make a tv appearance at this time. firefighters have walked through the house several times this is no sign of any kind of a drug lab. they have no clue why this happened. >> normally would you think a gas leak. but we've got an investigator looking and i'm not hurt right now. i've been with the department 16 years and this is the significant explosion with no source i've seen. >> reporter: firefighters say when they got here there was a small spot fire they had to put out that indicates it could be a gas leak. pg&e says they've found no evidence of any leaking gas. not only were there four men inside also two dogs peach and jazzy, they are being kept in a car in front of the house where they are being kept warm. one of the men was taken to the hospital suffering from burns to his leg.

expected to be okay. four men inside one withif80%9)ui% that landed him in the hospital. firefighters say these four men were very lucky. amy hollyfield abc7 news. we are following developing news in san francisco, three police officers are injured after the bizarre crash of an unmarked police car. terry mcsweeney is live in is another car involved? >> reporter: no other car involved just the one unmarked squad car with three -- unmarked police car with three officers inside. as you can see behind me, they are still trying get measurements using laser technology to figure out where the car was going how fast and they will try to figure out what caused the accident and sentc[ three officers to a hospital many take a look at the aftermath of this crash. i'll tell what police are saying about i.

1:40 this morning -- this blue unmarked car traveling southbound on potrero avenue got a call of a man with a knife on 24th and york. what happened next we don't know. here's what police can tell us now. >> at this time what we know is that the vehicle collided with a light pole on the southeast corner of the intersection of 19th street and potrero avenue. all three officers in the car were injured and transported by ambulance to san francisco general. they all have are what are considered nonlife-threatening injuries. talking to the officers at the hospital. >> reporter: the unmarked car towed away an hour ago. good news about the officers is as we heard, they are conscious and they are talking. probably going to be admitted for the more serious injuries. the others expected to be released. out here they are trying to figure out what made that car

swerve across from the southbound direction crossing the northbound lanes slamming into that light pole. terry mcsweeney, abc7 news. 6:06 now. moving to the other side of the bay. occupy oakland activists are beginning final preparations for tomorrow's general strike. protesters plan to stage demonstrations in front of several banks and are calling for everyone who works or lives in the city to join them in addition to targeting the banks the group plans to march from frank ogawa plaza to the port of oakland to shut it down. >> we will converge at 5 p.m. at 14th and bring and march to the port to shut÷=ma it down before the 7 p.m. night shift. we are doing this in order to block kay the flow of capital on the day -- blockade the flow of capital on the day of the general strike. >> several oakland teachers are to take part, the trick will bring in 500 substitute

earlier. jacqueline will tell you about that. accident involving three police officers have just reopened -- we'll leave it to jacqueline to tell you which streets those are. the accident was at 19th and potrero. that is coming up. two terminals in the port of oakland shutdown over safety concerns by longshoremen. these pictures taken by longshoremen in vietnam show one of five re for containers that -- refrigerator containers that examine exploded last fry. -- -- [ unintelligible ] there are potentially thousands of containers being shipped around the world some of them that have ended up on the docks in oakland that potentially lethal. these could be killer containers.

tell us they are in shock. they thought it was an earthquake that volted them an -- that jolted them awake no idea an explosion happened. it blew the windows out into the frontyard with the blinds. the side of the house is an incredible sight the wall has caved fallen off from the side of the house. the fact firefighters say it looks even worse. firefighters assumed it was a gas leak so they shut the gas off immediately. they took the meter off as part of evidence. pg&e was here and workers say there is no evidence of a gas leak. firefighters looked for a drug lab or any other obvious causes. they haven't found a thing. at this point they say they do not know the cause of the explosion. they did say the four men who were sleeping inside were lucky. >> they were outside across the street. initially we weren't sure if

they were the occupants or residents that were looking. they just appeared stunned. >> reporter: one of the men was taken to the hospital with burns to his leg he's expected to be fine. the other three were okay. along with the four men inside there were two dogs pete and jazzy kept warm in a car. there was a small spot fire which indicates a possible gas leak they put the fire out no problem went looking for that gas leak and couldn't find it pg&e agrees. at this point they don't know the cause. one of the firefighters told me in his 16 years in the department he has never seen an explosion this significant before especially one without an obvious cause. amy hollyfield abc7 news. :32. right now san francisco's major accident investigation team is trying to figure out what led to the crash of an

unmarked police car that sent three officers to the hospital this morning. somehow that car smashed into a light pole today at the intersection of 19th and potrero avenue. all three officers had to be pulled from the car. police say no other vehicles were involved. we are told while all three officers are being admitted to the hospital, they are all expected to recover from their injuries. today occupy oakland activists are turning their focus to tomorrow's general strike. they plan to march from frank ogawa plaza to the port where they say they will shut it down at 7 p.m.. they are calling for anyone who is part of the 99% of working americans to take tomorrow off and engine the protests in any way they can. demonstrators say they will picket any banks that don't close for the day. in san francisco the board of supervisors vet on a resolution which calls for city to declare support for the movement. -- yesterday committee

tahoe and you are week sunny and 62. just about 6:43. moments ago a team of surgeons at lucille packard children's hospital began a surgery to give conjoined 2-year-old twins new freedom and a new life. the procedure is expected to take at least 8 to 9 hours. katie marzullo is live with more. these twins are just adorable. we are watching this very carefully. >> reporter: i know. all good things for them. assuming things are on schedule the surgery involving 30 medical personal got underway 15 minutes ago. the team has a long day head. everyone is optimistic about the outcome and the girls' future. they are attached at the chest and abdomen. the first hour of this surgery is preparation. that's what is going on now. then there will be six hours of separating the 2-year-olds.

finally two to three hours of reconstruction on their bodies. it is a long and tedious process. the girls have one major thing going for them. >> we can determine the heart is separate that is great relief for us. the lungs are separate. the livers are joined so are the diaphragms. >> i explain to them you are like this and soon you will be separated. but i think they don't understand yet. >> reporter: the doctor who the is main pediatric surgeon has done five separation surgeries the last one was in 2007. it was more complicated because in that case the twins' hearts were conjoined. those twins are doing really well that is of course important for heading into today's surgery. the twins were born in the philippines now they live in san jose. they will be in the hospital
