7:02 am
i don't know why you're -- >> she's not moving. >> is it too risky for whale watchers to get this close? >> she did not move at all. plus you have your exclusive interview with pat summitt. >> that's why i have my tennessee orange on right now. went down to knoxville recently. she's a true legend in every sense of the word, pat summitt. she's won more games than any coach in college sports. now she's facing her toughest challenge, early onset dementia. got that diagnosis at the age of 59. >> so young. looking forward to that. but first conrad murray. his case goes to the jury later today. they'll decide if he's guilty of killing michael jackson after weeks of testimony and several hours of impassioned closing arguments yesterday. abc's jim avila has been there for all of it and starts us off this morning. good morning, jim. >> reporter: good morning, george. the jury will be bussed from a n to court this morning. they'll pick a jury and then begin deliberating the fate of conrad murray. lawyers from both sides and dr. murray will get a two-hour warning before a verdict is
7:03 am
announced. until then the jury and the rest of us wait. it's the jury's turn to speak. >> so i hope that you do the right thing. >> return with the only right verdict. >> not guilty. >> guilty. >> reporter: it was a final tug-of-war of words. the prosecution ridiculing conrad murray as an incompetent, $150,000 a month greedy opportunist whose negligence resulted in michael jackson's drug overdose leaving his children orphans. >> they do not have a father because of the actions of conrad murray. >> reporter: murray was a selfish doctor who covered his tracks, according to the prosecution, calling 911 after hiding incriminating propofol bottles, a guilty act. >> putting conrad murray first. putting michael jackson, his life, last. >> dr. murray did not kill michael jackson. >> reporter: but the defense countered arguing jackson killed himself by injection saying murray is not to blame. >> they want you to convict
7:04 am
dr. murray for the actions of michael jackson. >> reporter: in fact, jurors were told dr. murray is a victim of jackson's celebrity. >> if it were anybody else but michael jackson, anybody else, would this doctor be here today? >> poor conrad murray. michael jackson is dead, and we have to hear about poor conrad murray, and no doctor knows what it's like to be in his shoes. >> if you're going to hold dr. murray responsible, don't do it because it's michael jackson. this is not a reality show. it's reality. and the decisions you make, it's making good tv. it's how it affects real human beings and people that loved him. >> reporter: the jackson family seemed quite pumped by the prosecution effort.
7:05 am
after court they actually hugged the prosecutor la toya hugging him in the hallway and then michael's mother said her excitement was tempered by no matter what the verdict, michael jackson will not be back. george? >> much more on the jackson case coming up includeing an exclusive interview with michael jackson's bodyguards. plus dan abrams and nancy grace are back with their take on the closing arguments. robin. >> but now, george we're going to move on to those fast-moving developments surrounding republican front-runner herman cain this morning. there are new details surfacing about his alleged advances on women who worked for him at the national restaurant association. and one woman could be ready to tell her side of the story as early as today. our chief investigative correspondent, brian ross, is in d.c. and has the latest on all this. good morning, brian. >> reporter: well, good morning, robin. later today we may get the first word from one of the women who made sexual harassment allegations against cain and agreed to remain silent about it in return for a cash settlement, a reported $45,000. now, she wants to issue a written statement to dispute
7:06 am
what cain has said, his strong denials about the allegations during his tenure at the national restaurant association. former employees tell abc news, cain was a regular on washington's after-work bar scene, often with young women who worked with him at the restaurant association. some say it was just cain being personable and gregarious. but thursday cain was pressed about new accounts that he asked one young female employee to return to his corporate apartment with him. >> do you even have a corporate apartment? >> i had an apartment near the airport because i travel so much. that's true. sean, this is absolutely fabrication, man. >> reporter: and cain told sean hannity, he never even made flattering remarks to the woman. >> i didn't make those kinds of compliments. i didn't say that she looked hot or whatever and this sort of thing. i know i didn't do that kind of stuff. >> reporter: as abc news has reported, two of the women who received settlements from the restaurant association are well known in government circles.
7:07 am
one, in her 50s, now married and a spokesperson for a federal agency in washington. the other, now in her 40s, single, registered as a lobbyist in new jersey. both are said to fear the consequences of going public. >> there's good reason for them to be afraid. >> reporter: ricki seidman is a political operative who persuaded anita hill to go public during the confirmation hearings of supreme court nominee clarence thomas. she sees parallels with how the women who accused cain are being treated. >> they've been called all kinds of people already by people who have no idea who they are. >> reporter: that's just par for the course? >> in a political campaign? you bet you. >> reporter: and the cain campaign is already trying to turn the tables with a new commercial that paints the allegations as fabrications from rivals and the liberal media with pointed comparisons to clarence thomas. >> this is a circus. it's a national disgrace. it is a high-tech lynching for
7:08 am
uppity blacks who in any way deign to think for themselves. >> reporter: in another part of their defense, by going on the offense, cain's new team of crisis managers say they are considering all the options including possible lawsuits against politico, who first reported the story, and other reporters who are following up on it now, george. >> okay brian, thanks. >> let's get more on the political fallout for cain. our new abc news/"washington post" poll shows he's holding steady in the firestorm and has him basically tied with mitt romney at the top of the pack. texas governor rick perry, ten points back. and former house speaker newt gingrich right behind perry. some other interesting findings in the poll. jon karl is here to talk about the findings with me. let's look at the impact on cain, first of all. 55% of republican primary voters say this is not a serious matter, these allegations surrounding cain. and 69% are saying it doesn't affect his support for him at all. pretty good news for cain. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely, and what's interesting, this poll was conducted over four days. and actually as the week went on and cain handled this so badly,
7:09 am
many people said, actually, the number calling it serious got lower. this is what we're hearing when we talk to people in iowa and talk to his supporters. but there's also another point in this poll, george. one in four republicans said that it is a serious matter. >> it makes them less likely to vote for cain. and this is all before we hear from cain's accusers. we know that one of them wants to put out a statement today. we're not sure yet about the other, and that could go to the heart of whether or not he's telling the truth, and that could have a change. >> reporter: are there more shoes to drop? how is he going to deal with this? and once the women come public, if they do come public, we could have an entirely different game but right now it looks pretty good. >> and it comes against the backdrop of incredibly volatile republican field. another finding from the polls. 69% say they could still change their mind as we're just about two months away from the voting. >> reporter: yeah, isn't that amazing? this is after a campaign where we've seen michele bachmann go up and down. rick perry go up and down. and now, you know, herman cain, the latest.
7:10 am
but what's interesting here is the volatility is especially high among romney supporters. over 70% say they could change their minds. >> so even though he's held pretty steady in the low 20s basically since the -- >> reporter: for five years. >> exactly. he can't go higher. but he doesn't generally drop lower. >> yeah. >> okay. jon karl, thanks very much. oh, i'm sorry. i was going to go to robin. instead i'm going to go to josh. >> that's okay. >> sorry about that. >> that's okay. you don't have to apologize for going to me, george. i'll wait. we begin with the economy wore just this morning that the unemployment rate has not budged much in the last month so is there any hope now for the millions of americans looking for work? weekend "gma" anchor bianna golodryga is looking into that and joins us now live from washington this morning. good morning to you, bianna. >> hey, good morning to you, josh. the government's jobs report reveals that the unemployment rate dropped to 9% from 9.1% while 80,000 jobs were created last month. that's in line with estimates and an indication that the
7:11 am
economy is growing but slowly. the private sector added 104,000 jobs. that's a positive sign but government jobs continue to take a beating. 24,000 jobs were in the government sector alone. a few other positive trends we've seen has led more economists to believe that chances of entering another recession are receding so let's take a look at some of those positive nuggets we've seen. number one fewer people are applying for unemployment benefits. a good sign, number two, companies have seen an increase in orders of factories so maybe demand is increasing and worker productivity appears to be on the rise. when that happens, companies typically tend to save money and companies that have saved money tend to be more willing to start hiring soon. so, josh the economy is appearing to be improving but is still slow. >> bianna golodryga, thank you for that. meanwhile
7:12 am
wall street is also closely watching developments overseas, in greece where the prime minister has now reversed course deciding not to hold what was a very controversial public vote on the bailout to save the greek economy. good news for the markets. but the drama isn't over. a vote in the greek parliament today could oust the prime minister from office, leading to even more uncertainty. six days, meanwhile, after that freak snowstorm in the northeast, 400,000 homes and businesses in the state of connecticut still don't have power. turns out, to save money, the power company recently cut back, way back, on trimming trees near power lines. and the ceo fueled even more outrage when he suggested he might raise rates to pay for the company's painfully slow storm response, which the attorney general is now investigating. and i know, robin, you and i have no folks there in the state of connecticut who have some real opinions about this. >> still don't have power. so many people don't have power. nope, nope, nope. meanwhile, the popular coupon website groupon is going public. the price, $20 a share, which puts the company's value now at
7:13 am
a relatively astounding $12.7 billion. and in las vegas obviously odd things can happen, but this is really especially unusual. a truck driver being chased by police for going too slow, which i think is maybe a little unclear on the concept of the word chase. doing 45 in the fast lane. refuses to pull over. finally, the spike strips hit the rims of his tires until he could drive no more. and he was finally taken away in handcuffs. >> handcuffs? >> yeah. well, you know, you never know. he was going 45 miles an hour in the slow lane. there were obviously other issues in play there, george i would argue. >> all right, josh. thank you. >> you're welcome. can we say happy friday to sam champion? >> tgif. >> happy friday. but what were the other issues that would make you drive 45 in the slow lane? that's what i want to know. i mean, come on. >> so, sam, it looks like we got a real busy weekend. >> all right. so here we go. from the mid-atlantic into the northeast, it is a gorgeous start to the day. but wait till this afternoon when the wins pick up and the cold air drops in.
7:14 am
but enjoy it from boston about 51, new york, 55. this is right around the normal mark and a pretty nice day. here's where the heavy rain falls today. this is the same system that brought low-level snow to snoqualmie pass. now it brings rain from l.a. to san diego into palm spring flagstaff, phoenix, everybody in the southwest getting showers todayment this is a pretty good dose of rain for this area. three-quarters of an inch to a solid inch of rain. that cool air is reaching all the way to the gulf today. but not into florida.
7:15 am
>> just in case it's gone unsaid, happy friday to one and all. >> yay! >> you, as well. >> i think we said that to you when we -- but maybe not. >> he was already in 45. >> i was driving 45 in the slow lane. >> that's right. >> he's already 35,000 feet -- >> thumbs up. >> sam champion. all right. we're going to move on to william and kate. a lot of speculation this morning that the royal couple may be getting ready for a baby as clues emerge that the heir to
7:16 am
the throne may be on the way. abc's nick watt tracking the latest. he's got it all from london. do tell, nick. good morning. >> reporter: well, robin, there's nothing i like more than a good royal rumor. this one is a doozy. and there's a pretty good chance that it's true. on a visit to an aid warehouse, kate refused to taste a peanut paste. tongues are wagging uncontrollably. is she pregnant? here is the moment. another angle. and still photographs. expectant moms are sometimes advised steer clear of nuts. >> when you report on royals, often it's the very subtle things that they do which gives a lot away. >> reporter: and is that a knowing look from big daddy? bookmakers have stopped taking bets on a royal baby before next summer. they are sure she's pregnant. but there's no baby bump under that slim-fitting coat. >> if she is pregnant, there will be absolutely no announcement until three months into her pregnancy. >> reporter: could there be another explanation?
7:17 am
>> her spokesman, you know, made a statement to sort of stress that kate does not have any form of nut allergy. >> reporter: maybe she just thought it looked gross. perhaps she's on a diet or too self-conscious to eat on camera. but it's no secret, they want kids. >> honestly, you know, we want a family, so, you know, we'll have to start thinking about it. >> it's very important to me and, you know, i hope we'll be able to have a happy family ourselves. >> reporter: i remember last time an heir was born, diana was the glowing mother and william, the little prince, in swaddling clothes. now, there's another major clue here. just last week the british government announced a change in the laws of succession. laws that have been around for like a thousand years. used to be first born son always got the throne. now it's first born, whether that's a boy or a girl so william and kate may have a king or a queen. >> the timing of that announcement. i think not.
7:18 am
what is the palace saying about all this speculation, nick? >> reporter: as always, nothing. they say, we never confirm nor deny speculation about pregnancy. you know, duncan was right. there are hundreds of reporters following the royals, and they look for tiny little things to get little clues. and then finally the palace will come out and say it and everyone will be happy. but for now, it's a great guessing game. >> how much fun is it going to be to watch nick cover this story? >> i can't wait. now, to the pod of humpback whales putting on quite a show in santa cruz. all kinds of spectators are crowding in to catch the spectacle including this brave or foolish surfer who really got swallowed up. there he is right there. whoa. "gma" contributor becky worley didn't get that close but she still has some amazing shots for us. >> reporter: a bikini-clad surfer on a beautiful california day. then this. two humpback whales, bursting out of the water, mouths wide-open devouring mass
7:19 am
quantities of anchovies. and all dangerously close to these onlookers. >> it happened right out here about a quarter mile out. >> reporter: barbara roecker was just 20 feet away from the encounter when she shot this amazing video. scientists believe weather patterns have driven fish closer to shore this year and brought the feeding whales with them. and with the humpback population that has tripled in the last 20 year, surfers and kayakers like this were treated to a show. when people intentionally get too close to the whales, are they putting themselves in danger? >> a 40-ton animal can lift his entire body out of the water with a couple of swipes of a tail. you can imagine what it can do to a person. >> reporter: and this isn't the first time humans have tested that boundary. in 1992 lee tepley was filming what he thought was a friendly encounter between a pilot whale and a diver when suddenly the whale dragged the woman 40 feet under water. for people who watched this video, they're thinking, are you crazy? these animals are as big as semi

7:32 am
and why they say dr. murray is not a criminal. >> there's no way in hell that dr. conrad wanted to kill mr. jackson. why would he kill his paycheck? the relationship that him and mr. conrad murray had on our watch, they were more friendly. >> reporter: they feel the trial has unfairly vilified dr. murray. >> seeing how only dr. murray is being pointed out, i look at the trial and i say, you know that courtroom wouldn't be big enough to hold everyone in it that we feel would be accountable. >> reporter: you think there's more to this? >> certainly. >> absolutely. it's way bigger than dr. conrad. >> yes. >> no question in our minds. >> reporter: they say they're convinced someone other than dr. murray was medicating jackson during the daytime, to help him perform better. >> dr. murray was help mr. jackson's sleep, we certainly believe there was certainly other doctors that helped him stay up. >> reporter: meaning?

help him stay up throughout the day or keep his energy level up? >> yes. >> reporter: to perform? >> yes. >> reporter: but police have not accused anyone else who worked for jackson of a crime. back in this l.a. courtroom, the issue at hand remains. is dr. conrad murray guilty of involuntary manslaughter? >> michael jackson is dead. and we have to hear about poor conrad murray. and no doctor knows what it's like to be in his shoes. >> reporter: the bodyguards just wrote a book "defending the king." they say it will give more insight into michael's life. but today, is about who is responsible for michael's death. and that will be up for the jury to decide. george? >> abbie, thanks. let's bring in our legal team. nancy grace and our "gma" legal analyst, dan abrams. nancy, let me begin -- i take it nancy's not here right now. okay. do we have her there? nancy, okay. you're a former prosecutor. let's talk about the

prosecution's closing arguments. there's a lot of emotion. a little sarcasm, as well. >> yeah. you're right about that. but what's concerning me in addition to the closing arguments that went down is what you just played. two bodyguards claiming doctors should be on trial for keeping michael jackson awake. hello? nobody's on trial because it's not a crime to be awake. it's a crime to be dead by having propofol shot into your dead body until all of your organs are saturated with a powerful, surgical anesthetic that is not to be used outside the operating. those guys didn't know what they were talking about. >> it's actually not a crime to be putting drugs into a dead body. but if you put it in a live body that is a crime. >> great. >> i know. closing arguments, look. i think that the prosecution's closing was a bit stronger than the defense. i think the defense was smart to
7:35 am
bring up this idea of if it wasn't michael jackson, we might not be here today. the problem with the way they did it was, i think the constant reference, i think to for example, this is not a reality show, was a bit condescending to the jury. like they don't know they're there for a trial. and they need to be reminded it isn't a reality show i think is dangerous water for the defense. >> do you agree with that nancy? >> well, yes, i do. i was offended by suggesting that a homicide trial is somehow akin to a reality show. one thing for the defense is they really didn't have a lot to work with because their big theory is that michael jackson self-administered propofol. come on. the syringe by the bed is a 10 cc. when you give children benadryl they get 5 mls. there's no way that if jackson
7:36 am
had shot himself up with 10 ccs, there is no way the organs -- i have his autopsy report here. the vitreous -- you're not getting that out of one syringe. it's not going to happen. >> nancy, do you agree with me that if the jurors have questions whether jackson could have injected himself, that there might be an acquittal here? >> yes. i think an acquittal especially in california. hello, o.j. simpson. anything can happen here. and another thing, dan. as much as i don't like it people generally like their doctors. i like my doctor. i went under the knife. and he was the last thing i saw. wondering, will i make it? will my twins grow up without a mother? but i trusted my doctor. jurors don't like to convict doctors. and murray very wisely stayed mum. he let the jury suspect he may be guilty, rather than take the stand and confirm their
7:37 am
suspicions. he has that going for him. >> people hold doctors to a higher standard. and all of the things that dr. murray did do and he shouldn't have done didn't do that he should have done is going to be a problem. >> even if he brought the propofol in the room and the jurors believe michael gave it to himself. >> legally, the judge has guinn them a reason they could convict, even if they believe he may have done it himself. i think it will be hard for the jurors to convict on that. >> what about the question that dan just referred to. that we wouldn't be here if the victim were anyone but michael jackson. are they right about that? >> oh blah blah. george here's the deal. whenever a celebrity is on trial for -- is the defendant, it's all about celebrity justice. now, you finally have a celebrity who is a victim. you can't have your cake and eat it, too. you can't have it both ways. and the way i see this the reason this is getting any traction is because it's michael
7:38 am
jackson. that's not why it's in court. >> imagine a noncelebrity -- imagine a noncelebrity having a private doctor giving him propofol. all of the things that were happening -- >> yeah for $150,000 a month, dan. >> these are the things that happen to a celebrity. the propofol shouldn't have been in the room period. >> four gallons, dan. four gallons. think of a gallon of milk. four gallons of propofol. and he told the jury i'm trying to wean him? okay. >> as the case moved on we heard less and less i think about this idea of dr. murray trying to wean off michael jackson off of it. and more -- >> that was smart. >> yeah. i mean more about really focusing on reasonable doubt, i think. >> we only have a couple seconds left. you weigh in on this. quick verdict or not? >> i think it's going to take a little bit of time. i think high-profile cases, jurors want to cross the "ts"
7:39 am
and dot the "is" in the beginning. >> look at what they're wearing this morning. if all the men are in suits and ties, count for a verdict. everyone is screaming for a verdict on friday. i don't think it's going to happen. >> thank you very much. you agree on that. time now, for the weather and sam champion. >> we put this graphic up george robin, so you remember to change the clocks this weekend. but don't stare at it too long. i don't know. it's giving me a headache. i'm vibrating from the inside-out, looking at this graphic. i don't know. just remember to change your clocks this weekend. here comes into the deep south, the big change in temperatures. and it is a milder pocket of air in places like new orleans, at 64 degrees today. 77 on saturday. in memphis, you start out chilly. by the end of the weekend, you'll be comfortable at about 71 degrees. in the southwest, there's a brand-new, powerful system dropping down. this is going to bring rain for the southwest, that we talked about in the first half hour. but it's going to bring in snow for the mountains of l.a.
