good morning, america. this morning, one hour from an attack like this. police say a lone wolf terrorist was using al qaeda manuals to make powerful bombs in new york. caught red shouhanded before attacking soldiers and police. brian ross has the latest on the threat just days before thanksgiving. dozens of college students hit in the face with pepper spray. all caught on tape. police now under fire. but, should the school's chancellor resign? she joins us this morning for a live interview. baby sky's mother speaks out only to "gma" for the first time since his disappearance. two weeks after the toddler mysteriously vanish, she points her finger directly at her ex-husband. her new messages shake up the case. >> and jennifer lopez dazzled the stage in sexy sequins and a very revealing
performance at the "american music awards." we're backstage with all the dish from music's hottest night. hello, everyone. hope you had a good weekend. we have a lot of news this monday morning. including the details that went into foiling that bombing plot in new york. police moved in saturday, dramatic press conference last night and the police demonstrated what the bomb could have done. you see it right there. look at that. that was powerful. >> it was. and we tell you about a disappearance tied to the show, "the people's court." a young mom went missing after the show showed her fighting with her ex. the big question, was there a connection? we'll have the latest on this very bizarre case. and a fun story over the weekend. mila and the marine. first we saw justin timberlake, now mila kunis. she was the belle of this weekend's marine ball, after
accepting a date with marine sergeant. >> he can't wipe the smile off his face. >> don't blame him. now to the alleged terror plot. police arrested a man raised in the u.s. who they say planned to build and detonate a powerful bomb. targeting government workers, elected officials and returning military personnel. abc's brian ross joins us, you have the investigation here for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. he seems an unlikely candidate for terrorism. a mama's boy whose alleged journey to jihad involved no more than a computer and the kitchen of his mother's new york city apartment. using common household item, including matches, sugar and christmas tree light, police say he was able to make a bomb that he very much intended to use. the result would have been devastating. according to police, who built a duplicate bomb and set it off inside a compact car. authorities say 27-year-old jose pimintel planned to assassinate u.s. soldiers and marines
returning from iraq and afghanistan. >> the suspect was a so-called lone wolf, motivated by his own resentment of the presence of american troops in iraq and afghanistan, as well as inspired by al qaeda propaganda. >> reporter: this photo shows pimintel making his homemade bomb, shaving off the tips of matches, all based on a recipe in an al qaeda online magazine, entitled "make a bomb in the kitchen of your mom." >> he also planned to affix nails to them as additional shrapnel. >> reporter: police say they had him under surveillance at his mother's apartment at new york city for more than a year. authorities said pimintel had his own website and youtube channel called true islam. it features videos and articles justifying attacks on army bases, police stations, and any building where money is being made to help fund the war. police said they moved in this
weekend because he was only an hour way from setting off his first bomb, from his own admission. he was motivated by the death in september of anwar al awlaki. killed in yemen by a usair strike. he may be dead, but his ideas remain alive. >> just so close. an hour away. >> that's what he said. ready to go. now to washington. another failure that could affect every american. the supercommittee charged with reducing the deficit by more than a trillion dollars in the wake of last summer's debt limit crisis is expected to add might defeat today. jon karl has more. on what went wrong and what it means for all of us. they never got close. >> reporter: no, really a colossal and embarrassing failure. democrats and republicans on the committee just couldn't agree. they deadlocked over democrats and insisted over spending cuts be balanced with increases on the wealthy. so now assuming failure today, we have $1.2 trillion in
automatic cuts that hit virtually everything, domestic program, including medicare and medicaid will get hit. the pentagon will be hard hit. more than half the cuts on the pentagon. these will take place 2013. defense secretary panetta says these will be devastating. he'll be forced to cut the size of american ground forces to the smallest level since 1940. >> could be a huge change. another big change, this committee is expected to work on extending that payroll tax cut that got extended last year. also, unemployment benefits end in december. now it's very possible that you will see taxes go up for everyone in january. >> that's right. congress will come back after thanksgiving and try to deal with these issues. george, here's what you're looking at. you're looking at the long-term unemployed, seeing his benefits go away at the end of the year. those long term unemployment benefits simply ending and a tax increase of 2% for all american
workers that will go into effect on january 1st. >> huge impact. thanks very much. now to the fallout from the disturbing videos showing police officers pepper-spraying protesters. at a california university friday, uc davis. two officers placed on leave this weekend. now a growing number of people are calling for the university chancellor to resign. we'll have an exclusive interview with her in just a minute. but first, cecilia vega is in davis, california, with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: good morning, robin. the head of the ten-campus system says he is appalled by what happened out here. he plans to talk to the chancellors today and is calling for a top to bottom review of campus policing. there are six angles. and each image is crystal clear. the student protesters were seated peacefully and huddled on the ground.
the uc date lieutenant takes out the can of pepper spray, points it directly at their faces and sprays them one by one. when he reaches the end of the line, he circles back and does it all over again. >> the police officer said he would spray us. i had no idea that was coming until it was already in my face. >> i think the way they responded shows for them it's about power. not about -- not about the actual moral implications of their actions. >> she's not resisting! >> he isn't resisting! >> shame on you! >> reporter: it began when occupy wall street protesters set up tents on uc campus. police ordered the camp cleared by 3:00 p.m. friday. at 3:30, police in riot gear showed up. to remove the remaining protester, and the pepper spraying began. the university police chief says the students encircled the officers, and police felt trapped.
it was for the safety of the officers and arrestee, so we could leave, we were looking to leave. they couldn't make the exit. >> reporter: two officers are on leave. outraged students and faculty are calling for the chancellor's resignation. pointing not only to the video showing the pepper spray, but to this moment over the weekend, when linda ketahi reportedly waited for two hours in a nearby building before walking through a silent gauntlet of protesters. there's a huge student demonstration planned today at noon, and the campus chancellor is expected to address the student body then. >> the chancellor, linda ketahi joins us. thank you for joining us. you've resisted calls so far to resign. are you going to stay? you have resisted calls to resign? >> yes, in fact, the university has a critical position. i want to work with the members of our community, with the students, the staff, the faculty to take our institution out of this crisis and move forward.
>> the faculty association board has called for your resignation. nearly 50,000 people have signed a petition calling for you to go. haven't you lost the confidence of the faculty and the students? >> we have the faculty center. the greater faculty body because i'm working of course to interact with them. i really feel confident at this point the university needs me. as there are so many critical issues to be addressed. we need to start the healing process and move forward. so many things we need to learn about the horrible incident and -- we need to really spend time trying to understand what happened and move on. >> what are the -- excuse me, one of the arguments that the faculty association board has made was that given the force was used against protesters at the uc berkeley campus last
week, you should have foreseen an action like this. >> our campus had seen an unrest for the last 2 1/2 weeks. and that has been building up. i don't want to say, of course, that there were -- it was a difficult decision for the campus to really try to make sure that the students are safe. whenever incidents like this happen, the biggest, critical issue for us is the safety of the students using the campus facilities, who really want to learn in this environment. the situation was becoming a concern for us, the members of the community. the decision was not to disperse the students but really to dismantle the appointment for the encampment and there was an effort for many, many days -- >> chancellor, you say you were concerned -- excuse me, you say you're -- we're looking at the
video again right now. they're sitting there peacefully. it doesn't appear to be a violent situation. >> exactly. it's horrible what it shows. it's appalling for all of us. and really shows what we don't have. it's critical for us right now to understand what's happened and try to make the appropriate corrections so this does not happen again. >> okay, chancellor, thank you very much for your time this morning. >> thank you. and what's also deafening, we saw at the end of the piece, when the students were sitting silently, and she walked to her car, that just spoke vols. >> very powerful. >> very, very powerful stuff. now to a new witness in the death of hollywood icon natalie wood, 30 years ago and what this new witness had to say is chilling. abbie boudreau has more. and joins us this morning from los angeles. good morning, abbie. >> reporter: good morning, robin. marilyn wayne says she has no doubt she heard natalie wood's
last cry for help. now she's sitting down exclusively with "entertainment tonight" to talk about that night, everything she remembers 30 year ago. >> we heard a voice, a female voice yelling for help, somebody help me, i'm drowning. >> how long did the screaming go on for? >> 25 minutes. >> reporter: she says it was around 11:00 p.m. november 28th, 1981 when she heard a woman screaming about 40 feet from her boat. she says "the splendour" was containing natalie wood, her husband, robert wagner and officer christopher watkin were nearby. she said she heard a man's voice, oh, hold on, we're coming to get you. then the woman's voice stopped. she tried to contact police right away. wayne said she tried contacting police right away, but they were unresponsive. but now, investigators are looking at all angle, reportedly even traveling to hawaii to
study "the splendour" which is still being used. dennis davern was the boat's captain that night. he says he heard wood and wagner fighting before she went missing. >> i said, let's turn on the searchlight. robert wagner told me, no, we're not going to do that. >> reporter: police have never accused wagner of a crime. he says he believes his wife slipped and fell into the water. but natalie wood's sister, lana, told cnn, she suspects wagner isn't telling the whole story. >> i don't think she fell. i don't know if she was pushed. >> reporter: meanwhile, the original detective told "48 hours," he ran a fair investigation. >> i did not cover for anybody. i wouldn't cover for anybody. i don't care about the celebrity status. >> reporter: police say robert wagner is not a suspect. and his spokesperson says he's fully supportive of this new investigation. robin? >> i'm sure he wants finality as well as everybody else. all right. thank you. now josh has the other top
stories developing right now. >> indeed. good morning to you, and to all of you. we'll start with breaking news overseas. a major league baseball star has been stabbed and killed in europe. seattle mariners out fielder, greg hollman was stabbed to death in rotterdam today. his 22-year-old brother has been arrested in the crime. his family is from holland. police are not commenting on what may have led to the stabbing. meanwhile an unfolding crisis for the cia. brian ross has learned that at least a dozen american spies in iran and lebanon have been taken into custody by hezbollah. a militant group with close ties to iran. the u.s. government is concerned the outed spies will be or may have already been executed. the group's leader first bragged about outing u.s. spies back in june but the u.s. embassy denied it at the time. dramatic new video of the deadly street riots in egypt now entering their fourth day. at least 35 people have been killed, as police fired tear gas and rubber bullets. 1,800 have been wounded.
the protesters angry that the military rulers are taking so long to transfer power to a civilian government. two men who collapsed in the philadelphia marathon on sunday have died from apparent heart attacks. one, a 21-year-old student, the other, a 40-year-old man. both died at or near the finish line. this morning, the white house is downplaying the reception the first lady michelle obama received at a nascar event sunday, where it appeared that she was booed by fans. >> first lady of the united states, michelle obama, and dr. jill biden, as they deliver the most famous words in motorsports. >> the white house says it was a chaotic event. it was not clear what the boos were specifically for. finally, move over occupy wall street. the unoccupy movement has arrived. fed up with crowds and noise and disruptions, a group called

on saturday, they searched her exfiance's home and a nearby field. >> i'm mad if somebody took her and is doing this to her and our family. >> reporter: hundreds of friends and volunteers have shown up to search. her friend says they don't think he had anything to do with her disappearance. >> let's hope we find her and bring her home. >> reporter: "gma" tried to contact the exfiance, dale smith, he would not comment. police are saying he's not a suspect. today, that search focuses on finding michelle parker's missing cell phone. that iphone could hold a clue to perhaps finding her. another bafrling case. a "gma" exclusive. we're hearing for the first time from the mother of that little boy who went missing in washington state two week ago. speculation has opinion rampant
about what happened to sky metalwala. good morning, neal. >> reporter: good morning, robin. i reached out to the little boy's mother, julia, as part of my reporting. i was surprised when this weekend, many days after the fact, i started to get a response. the messages come from an account that the missile toddler's mother, julia, has listed as her e-mail ard. relatives vary fie it's hers. when i asked for a comment, she or someone else using the account writes, my former shubd a sadistic muslim pakistani. no one has any idea. this is all too difficult. kindly, julia. when i responded i would like to hear more, this. my attorney has forbid me from speaking about the ongoing investigation. my former husband's allegations are without merit. solomon is deceptive.
solomon is her exhusband. he's cooperated with the investigation. julia claims her car ran out of gas and she left sky inside when she went for help. i asked, please, you to have any idea where sky is. the response comes back, no. i asked if she thinks her husband has anything to do with the disappearance. her answer? yes. we showed the e-mail to investigators. >> i can't comment. i'll get it in the hands of investigators right away. >> reporter: police say relatives she's stage with could have access to her e-mail. her estranged husband says the messages sound like julia. >> obviously, she's trying to maybe trying to get me kind of riled up. the focus is to find sky. >> reporter: when i steer the conversation back to her son and ask, what might help bring sky

you were in afghanistan. you lost comrades. >> we lost six marines and one sailor. great tuopportunity for her to e that. i got to introduce her to lance corporal tillman, he lost part of his leg in an ied blast. she got to meet his wife as well. it was very memorable. >> he was out on the dance floor with his wheelchair. you had a hard time keeping up with him. >> yes. >> did you dance with mila? >> we did for a little bit. for the most part, there was a lot to explain. a lot of people to introduce her too. >> a busy night. i have to be fair. when corporal kels ley was here talked to her about justin timberlake. the night ends. was there a good night kiss? because i asked her, i have to

ending their six-year marriage. she's dealing with the fallout in hawaii. over the weekend, more details emerging from behind the scenes of the split. reports of intense fighting and tabloid rumors saying that the couple had an open marriage. in this new tmz interview, one of ashton's alleged mistresses said demi knew about the affair. >> what did you think when ashton said he had an open relationship? >> he said i was honest with everyone about that. i feel a little bit used, lied to, like that wasn't the truth. my heart goes out to her if she really was in the dark about everything. >> from what i have heard, too, they had an open relationship. but there was always a clause in that. if you were going to do it, do not get caught. do not have it be a public fiasco. he was silly in how he handled it. >> reporter: demi and ashton
