"your voice, your vote." florida is heating up. with just three days until the critical primary there. the latest poll shows mitt romney is surging and newt gingrich stalling. gingrich is not going down without a fight, launching one of the nastiest ads yet. jon karl is in pensacola this morning. this is a tactic newt said he would avoid just a few weeks ago. so what's happened? >> reporter: this race has gotten nastier on both sides. it's also gotten volatile. just a week ago, gingrich, fresh off the landslide victory in south carolina looked like he was headed towards a win here in florida.
7:07 am
but now it is mitt romney who is the candidate on top. mitt romney is starting to feel like a front-runner again. >> i'm looking forward to debating barack obama. i'm not going to worry about the crowd. i'm going to make sure we tell the truth to barack obama and get him out of the white house. >> reporter: in two strong debate performances this week, romney pushed back hard against attacks from newt gingrich. >> the idea that i'm anti-immigrant is repulsive. don't use a term like that. >> reporter: in a new poll of florida republicans, romney has jumped ahead with a nine-point lead. campaigning in cape canaveral, on florida's space coast, which has been hit hard by budget cuts, he says the space program is important but wouldn't make promises to expand it. >> in the politics of the past, to get your vote in the space -- on the space coast, i would come here and promise hundreds of billions of dollars. or i would lay out. yeah, you want to hear that. yeah. >> reporter: that's a far cry from gingrich. earlier this week, he made this bold promise. >> by the end of my second term,

7:10 am
sit down and drink your orange juice this morning, dan, according to government health officials. but there's concern. the fda has been scrambling to test our orange juice after reports of a pesticide that is illegal in the u.s., but is allowed in other countries, was showing up in some of our imported juice. that pesticide is used in brazil, for example. brazilian imports come here, they get mixed with the domestic juice and end up on the shelves. the fda has tested 40 samples. they have found that 11 of them are positive. five from brazil, six from canadian manufacturers. they've found just trace amounts. very small amounts. but this is enough to keep the shipments out of the country. >> if this pesticide is illegal, why shouldn't we be worried about drinking orange juice? >> reporter: well, what the fda is telling us the levels
7:11 am
they're finding are so small, trace amounts, much lower than what we would be concerned with from a health standpoint. it raises a lot of questions about the imported food supply and what we do and do not know. the fda is not done with testing. there are at least 40 samples more to go. we'll have to see what they find in those samples. >> again, the o.j. is safe to drink this morning. lisa stark, thank you for your reporting. now to the sticker shock at the meat counter. the price of beef is soaring. it's about to get worse. what can you do about it? david kerley is at the wagshal's supermarket in washington, d.c. with more. david, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. it's not the poultry or the pork here. it's the beef that is shooting up in prices. this, really, is just the beginning. it's sticker shock at the meat counter. >> it's been tremendous increase in beef prices lately. >> reporter: every month butchers are putting new price
7:12 am
tags on beef. >> increase in beef has been in the works for the last year and a half. >> reporter: look at this. in the past five years, the price of hamburger, ground beef, has jumped from $2.87 a pound to $3.55 a pound. a 24% increase. and if you would like a steak on the barbie, a 14% jump. from $5.29 a pound to more than 6 bucks. the reason is simple. just not enough cattle in our country anymore. in fact, you have to go all the way back to the cold war, when harry truman was president to find the last time the number of cattle in this country was this low. what happened? five years ago, feed and other costs took off. so cattlemen started cutting their herds so they could make a living. then last summer, the drought multiplied that reduction. >> it's not only caused many producers to liquidate their cattle. we're seeing a shortage of feed. therefore driving the price of producing these animals to go up. >> reporter: and there's another problem. we're not the only ones who like steak.
7:13 am
the rest of the world likes steak, too. exports were up 21% last year. they're expected to stay up this year. the price is only expected to go up. dan, if you like a steak or a hamburger, put some in the freezer now. even though the price is high now, it's going to get even higher. >> i think he's speechless. i'll take that. thank you, david. i'll take it from here. we're going to turn to the medical mystery in upstate new york. two more girls are now reporting simple symptoms of an illness that so many are complaining of. they're displaying symptoms similar to tour rrette's. this morning, they have a new ally, erin brockovich, who thinks she may know what's behind it all. we have more from linsey davis. >> reporter: it's a medical mystery that seems to be spreading. 14 girls and 1 boy, all from this same upstate new york high school, suddenly exhibiting odd tics, verbal outbursts, fainting spells. >> i've never heard of anything
7:14 am
like this. >> reporter: now a new twist. erin brockovich, the crusader famously xxx trayed by julia roberts is getting involved. >> anything less than that is a waste of our time. >> i have had an outcry of e-mails from the people of the community. >> reporter: lydia parker was the sixth teenager in this rural town to come down with the strange symptoms. throughout our interview her right arm continually jabs the air. >> i can't stand for more than about two minutes. so i'm in a wheelchair. and my vocals and -- everything gets bad at night. >> reporter: what most frustrates you? >> that i don't have any answers. i've been -- i've been doing tests and tests and tests. >> i, personally, have never seen anything like this before. >> reporter: dr. jennifer mcvige has treated most of them. she believes this is a form of mass psychogenic illness.
7:15 am
a rare but real disorder. brockovich has another theory. in 1970, a ton of chemicals was spilled from a train just three miles from the future high school. >> there are other people coming out reporting that they lived close to the spill site, that their family is experiencing health problems. >> reporter: lydia doesn't believe the cause is environmental or psychological. but to people who think she's faking, she points out the two bruises on her face. >> this one is from fainting. and i hit my head on my bed post. and this one, i ended up hitting myself in my face with my phone. >> reporter: as for brockovich, her team will be in new york this week to investigate the possible threat for themselves. >> when you're involved in children's health and a situation where there is a ground water contamination that agencies do not respond to for 20 years, we need to come together to try to find some answers. >> reporter: for "good morning america," linsey davis, abc news, leroy, new york. >> so strange. here's another story.

>> having worked with actors for many years -- >> reporter: actress anjelica huston has now come out to protest the ads as well. it's a subject she's been speaking out about for years. >> i find it hard to believe that anyone has to be dragged kicking and screaming into show business. the next time you see a chimpanzee in a movie, on tv, in an ad, chances are that's exactly what happened. >> it's a monkey. >> well, sure it's a monkey. >> reporter: chimpanzees and their primate brethren have long been staples as comic relief fixtures in movies and on television. always good for a laugh. animal rights advocates say few people realize how they're captured at a young age and torn away from their mothers. how they're often trained through physical and psychological abuse. how when they're not performing, they're penned up in tiny cages. >> what happens to them when they're not on the set? what happens to the animals? how are they trained in the months prior to the shoot? where are they housed after the fact? these are important questions to
7:43 am
ask. when it comes to evaluating whether this practice is good for the chimps overall. >> reporter: careerbuilder, which has run a number of the popular super bowl ads, said in a statement -- during the production of our ad, we followed the strictest guide lines to ensure the chimpanzee stars were treated well. and not harmed in any way. the american humane association said there was an observer to monitor the filming. to assure that the chimps were well treated. animal rights say there's no need anymore to take animals from the wild. they can easily be replicated by computer effects. like they were in the recent movie "rise of the planet of the apes." they say animals, like these chimpanzees, belong to nature. not to a 30-second spot during a football game. still, careerbuilder says that the show, their multimillion dollar commercial featuring those chimps -- will go on. but the protesters say they're making progress. they say they've succeeded in
7:44 am
convincing a number of companies to stop using or not use chimps in their ads in the future. >> just like i did with ripples the cat, i'm siding with the chimpanzees. >> they make a convincing case that at least in some instances, they're kept in sad cages and abused. >> and if you can do it with computer graphics? >> it's expensive. the computer graphics. but it doesn't abuse any chimps. coming up on "gma" on this saturday morning, look who we have today. he's officially the tallest basketball player in the world. how tall? and where do you get size 20 shoes? ginger zee does not stand a chance. oes not stand a chance. but there are foods that i had no idea had so much acid in them. my dentist said that the acid in fruit, or fruit juice or fruit teas softens the enamel so that then it can potentially erode. once that enamel is gone it's gone. my dentist recommended that i use pronamel to help harden that enamel
