is not competent to stand trial. not sure if that could come this week. this is different from an insanity plea, as well. but this is just the first step of many. about 30 days down the road we have the preliminary hearing. then you have arraignment, months from now. then sentencing. this could drag on for a while. >> a long process. >> but just really key to emphasize he will not make a plea tomorrow. today rather. >> he will not do that. the bar is pretty low in terms of is someone competent to stand trial. experts believe he will be found competent enough to stand trial even down the road if he is found insane. important to note. and this will move forward in terms of the trial the gets started later today. moving on, police in the heartland are looking into bomb threats against several wal-mart stores. those threats were made against three walmarts in leavenworth and lawrence, kansas.

the stores were temporarily closed. no bombs were found. yesterday's threats followed similar ones that happened in eight communities in missouri last friday. again no bombs were found at those stores. in other news this morning, protests stemming from two police shootings in anaheim, california, have taken place for nine straight days. more than 300 demonstrators were out, voicing their anger against the city's police whom they accuse of racism. two protestors were arrested. federal prosecutors and the fbi are looking into the shootings to see if civil rights investigations are warranted. some new information about medical leave of congressman jesse jackson jr. the democrat from illinois is being treated for depression and gastrointestinal issues at the mayo clinic in minnesota. there is no timetable for his recovery and his return to congress. jackson has been on medical leave since early june. his whereabouts and condition have been unclear. mitt romney heads to poland

this morning where he will visit the site of the first shots fired in world war ii. on top of that, he will also pay tribute to the country's anti-communist movement. yesterday, romney met with an old friend, israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. the visit meant to send a message that friendship matters at a critical time in relations between israel and iran. >> personal friend of mine and a strong friend of the state of israel. >> israel faces enemies who deny past crimes against the jewish people and seek to commit new ones. >> romney said israel has the right to defend itself against iran and that the u.s. must lead the effort to keep iran from getting nuclear weapons. >> romney and his wife stopped at a sacred jewish site which has been visited by so many leaders in the past. abc's david muir reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: it was a powerful backdrop for a presidential campaign that brought mitt

scrutiny after one of the new jets sparked a fire in south carolina. the 787 experienced what boeing is calling "an engine issue" during preflight testing over the weekend. debris reportedly fell from the jet and started a grass fire near the runway. the high-tech dreamliner debuted last year after years of delays. it is supposed to offer more comfort and fuel savings. frightening moments at a six flags theme park in california. a new superman ride got stuck right at its tallest point leaving a dozen people stranded 15 stories in the air for more than an hour. luckily they were in the upright position. a good thing. a crane was brought in, but, park workers were able to restart the ride, sending riders safely to the ground, backwards. >> imagine if they were upside down. >> oh, man. those guys must have been freaking out. >> ooh. >> no backing out now. no place to go down. we admit that the phrase "end of an era" is a little overused. just a little bit.

international tour. he did say we can't stand silent as those who seek to undermine israel voice their criticism and we should not join in the criticism. >> the president said all options are on the table when dealing with iran. we'll see. >> the tour continues. well, the suspect in the colorado movie shootings is to be formally charged with murder later today. james holmes expected to face 12 counts of murder in the first degree and hundreds of other count including attempted murder and assault. >> if he gets convicted of one count of first-degree murder, the punishment will be either the death penalty or life without possibility of parole. >> we are also learning that the company which runs the aurora theater hired off-duty police officers as security guards in other locations but none on duty at the aurora theater. syrian troops are unleashing

heavy fire power on rebel positions in its largest city. as the battle intensifies, the u.n. says more than 200,000 people have fled the city of aleppo in two days. abc's reporter is inside northern syria and brings us the latest. >> reporter: fighting continued to rage in aleppo, syria's commercial capital. regime forces shelled neighborhoods taken by opposition forces desperately clinging on calling for heavier weapons. we crossed into syria early this morning, our first stop was a city which had seen heavy violence last month outside aleppo. the devastation was staggering. there hardly seemed to be a single building left untouched. and virtually a ghost town. also remarkable was traveling all day across northern syria, we didn't see a single government tank or troop. which tells you how far these opposition forces have come. but until they take a city like aleppo they have a long way to go. >> alex marquardt reporting there from inside syria. two big developments in syria.

one, the chemical weapons, removed, transported, eyes of the world wondering if assad will use them, when and how. and the use of helicopters. the first in the last couple weeks. bombing his own people here. and defense secretary, panetta said using helicopters against his own people was a nail in his coffin. talk getting very, very tough. wondering if assad's days are in their final numbers here. >> leon panetta saying he lost all legitimacy, right now the battle between the rebels and government. government troops saying they recaptured a part of aleppo which is what they're fighting for, capital of syria right now. the government declared victory on sunday in aleppo. it is sad to see what's going on there. and leon panetta almost like begging for the united states to do a little bit more. but it's a tough situation for all parties involved. >> if it was not an election

welcome back, everybody. some surprisingly blunt comments from former vice president dick cheney. >> indeed. in an exclusive interview with abc news, cheney said john mccain's selection of sarah palin as his vp candidate was a mistake. abc's john karl sat down with cheney and asked him about the vice presidential process for mitt romney. >> how important is it for him to do this in a way different than the way john mccain handled his vice presidential search? >> pretty important. that one i don't think was well handled. i sort of think of it as -- there are two lists. there is the big list, that's got a lot of folks on it. i actually when i was doing it for -- well, i did it for ford in '76, but then again for george w. bush in 2000. i had a couple calls from prominent politicians who would say it would help me in my race

back home if i was on the list. you are on the list. then somebody could leak the fact that they were on the list. but that was the big list. it was easy to get on the big list. the tough part is the small list has to be is this person really under active consideration. and the test to get on the small list has to be is this person capable of being president of the united states. that's usually a very, very short list. >> what about the other considerations? can you bring a state? can you -- reach out to a specific demographic, woman, hispanic? >> those are important issues. but they should never be allowed to override the first proposition. and i think that, that was one of the problems mccain had. i like governor palin. i have met her, i know her. she is an attractive candidate. based on her background -- she had only been governor for two years. i don't think she passed that test. >> being ready? >> being ready to take over. >> i think that was a mistake. >> tough words there. you wonder how mama bear responds to that, of course. we'll see. you can see much more of the exclusive interview with the former v.p. on "good morning

after taking heat, i am devastated by the recent tragedy in colorado. and did not mean to make light of what happened. i made a bad judgment call with my material. i regret making a joke at such a sensitive time. my heart goes out to the family and victims. >> you don't do that. >> too soon, dane. also more drama, kristin stewart-pattison. breakup. apparently not only has he moved out. a u-haul seen. she moved out. he moved out. now according to sources he is so heartbroken, the two are not even talking anymore. looks like there may not be a reconciliation there. o.j. simpson currently in jail for 33-year sentence. won't be going on oprah winfrey's show. his promoter is saying that he feels like oprah is partially responsible for him being in jail right now. she never let anyone like -- like o.j. come on the show or his promoter and talk about it. or rather the promoter says
