all right. in addition to gun control, another issue getting attention on capitol hill is immigration. thousands gathered there in nearly 20 states yesterday in support of a sweeping overhaul of current immigration laws. >> a bipartisan group of senators expect to finish work on their overhaul bill in the next few days. it is expected to include measures to secure the border. jim avila traveled to one area

of arizona where one landowner said more security is desperately needed. >> i live in no man's land. i have to protect myself. >> reporter: 2,000 miles west of the huge rally, arizona rancher, jim chilton patrols five miles of international border emphatically sounding an alarm that complicates immigration restorm. we're standing next to the border, there's four strands of barbed wire. is the border secure? >> no, the border is not secure. >> chilton says that, as he and his cowboys go about their business in the corral, the rugged back country on his land is constantly swarmed by illegal immigration. using robotic, motion-sensitive cameras he and his neighbors have documented hundred sneaking into the united states each month. watch this -- chilton agrees that an increase in border patrol agents and equipment, plus 650 miles of steel fence are working in the major border towns.

south korean news reports said emergency threat levels have been raised to watchcon-2, one step away from war. >> it was all over the news this morning, and there was this red highlight saying watchcon-2. >> reporter: a young mother sae-jun kim told me last week she wasn't worried. now she's starting to make emergency plans. >> if he strikes anywhere else, i want my kids to be with me. >> reporter: this morning she peeked in on her son still sleeping. while he may be unaware of all that's going on, it's clear to us exactly what's at stake. abc news, seoul. president obama hosted a second dinner with top republican leaders. this one took place behind closed doors at the white house. senator johnny isaakson of georgia called the meeting productive. it would raise taxes on smokers and the wealthy and trimming social security benefits for millions. >> when it comes to deficit reduction, i've already met republicans more than halfway.

>> it's not a serious plan. for the most part, just another left wing wish list. >> many democrats oppose the president's budget because it calls for cutting social programs. we'll know by the end of today whether the senate will open a full debate on gun control legislation. it's looking likely now that a new bipartisan agreement to expand background checks on gun buyers is in place. those checks would apply to virtually all commercial sales, including those online and at gun shows. the nra says, instead of more checks, more efforts should be made to improve the nation's health system. first lady michelle obama has made a rare leap into policy issue making a plea for stricter gun laws. mrs. obama was at a youth conference in chicago, and she recalls the difficulty she had meeting the classmates of a young girl who was shot just a week after appearing in the inaugural parade. >> it is hard to know what to say to a roomful of teenagers who are about to bury their best

abc's ron claiborne reports. >> reporter: the hostage drama began in suwanee, georgia, an atlanta suburb, when firefighters responded to a call that someone was having a heart attack. from inside the home, the firefighter called his dispatch desk. >> we have an armed person, and he is armed, and we are in the room with him. >> reporter: the gunman released one of the firefighters to allow him to remove their vehicle. police then attempted to negotiate with him. he told them he wanted his utilities turned back on. then nearly three hours after the hostage situation began, loud explosions and then gunshots were heard, the sound of police storming the house. >> gunfire exchanged between the suspect and our s.w.a.t. team. the suspect is deceased at this time. >> reporter: one of the police officers was wounded. the gunman's motive is unknown at this time, but there are reports that his home had been foreclosed. ron claiborne, abc news, new

york. the parents accused of kidnapping their children and taking them to cuba are due in court today. joshua and sharyn hakken face kidnapping, child neglect, and interference with custody charges. the boys were safely returned to their grandparents, who have legal custody, after the ordeal. people in the midwest have a cleanup on their hands after getting slammed by three tornadoes in the st. louis area last night. major damage to homes, schools, and other buildings. so far, there are no reports of serious injuries, but tens of thousands of people are without power. thousands are also in the dark in minnesota and south dakota, thanks to the latest black of snow and ice there as well. a utility pole snapping under the weight of the heavy ice on those poles. across sioux falls, a state of emergency declared. it could take weeks to recover from that rm sstorm. >> and more of the same could be on tap today.

homes, ripped off roofs and peeled back siding. wind gusts topping 100 miles an hour overturned cars and left streets littered with branches and debris. tens of thousands of people lost power and the governor has declared a state of emergency but there were no reports of serious injuries. a similar scene in northern arkansas where an apparent twister hammered one town leffing a church and a number of homes there in shambles. thousands also left in the dark. residents ran for cover in their basements. at least four people were hurt. more tornado watches and warnings have been posted for today and accuweather jim dickey shows us where they're heading now. >> another round expected today. this time the threat shifts further eastward. much of the southeast including augusta, georgia, the first round of the masters could see some in the later rounds for the day. large hail, damaging wind gusts and tornadoes a threat with the storms and seeing more in the way of snowfall.
