>> hello. >> that's good odds. >> that's like winning the lottery. >> i didn't win nothing. i got shut out, didn't get bit by a shark. >> no lightning shark. >> keep trying. all right. let's presume that you didn't win the powerball but if you're an investor in the stock market, you could be happy about the latest surge. the dow climbed 147 points yesterday. the other major averages were up. stocks jumped after the federal reserve announced it's not changing its current economic stimulus program. chairman ben bernanke said there's no proof that the market is strong enough. he's also worried about a government shutdown threat. the concerns are reflected in the fed's new economic outlook. it will be between 2 and 2.3%. that's down from the previous estimate but it also predicts unemployment will be about 7.3% by year's end and that next year it will fall even more to 6.4%.

will be among the mourners on sunday for those who died in the navy yard shooting rampage. this morning we're learning more. kachb travers has more. >> reporter: the pentagon acknowledged there were red flags about aaron alexis. >> why they didn't get picked up. >> reporter: abc news has learned that alexis learned better off this way and my elf weapon on the stock of the shotgun he used in monday's massacre. authorities are trying to determine what those phrases could mean including whether if better off this way meant alexis knew he would not survive his rampage. investigators are also piecing together clues about alexis' mental state. one recent incident stands out. on august 7th at 6:00 a.m. alexis called the newport, rhode island, police. he claimed after an incident at an airport it sent three people to follow him and keep him awake by talking to him and sending vibrations through his body through a microwave machine.

newport authorities contacted naval police who determined at that point in time alexis was not a threat to himself or to others. >> if someone is in a position where they have access to information and facilities because of their clearances, a mental health issue or problem can be extremely serious and it would need to be addressed right away. >> reporter: alexis' grieving mother spoke out. she had no answers. >> i don't know why he did what he did and i'll never be able to ask him why. to the families of the victims, my heart is broken. last month aaron alexis sought help for insomnia at two veterans hospitals. they asked him if he was struggling with anxiety or depression or if he had thoughts on hurting himself or others. on both visits he said no. a couple of big business men in trouble beginning with info mesh shal pitchman kevin true doe. he's in custody for violating a court order for stopping his lavish spending habits and pay a

they're curious because of his background as a computer technician and the bizarre story alexis told police last month about hearing voices and microwave machines bombarding his body. police in rhode island alerted the navy police but they say it was never passed up the chain of command and he kept his job as a civilian contractor with the navy holding a secret clearance. >> obviously there were a lot of red flags as you noted. why they didn't get picked up, why they didn't get incorporated into the clearance process, what he was doing, those are all legitimate questions that we're going to be dealing with. >> reporter: after hearing those voices alexis went to a v.a. hospital complaining of insomnia. they gave him sleeping medication. when asked if he had thoughts of hurting himself or anyone, he said no and that was that. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. matthew core dell kept his

promise and pled guilty to drunk driving in an ohio courtroom. he got attention in this youtube video where he admitted to killing a gentleman drinking and driving. a locksmith in suburban san francisco recovering from a gunshot wound. the locksmith had the gun drilling a doorknob when he shot through that door. that started a four-hour standoff that ended when the man was arrested. a wild police pursuit in south florida. it ended in death. a man fleeing from police who killed his girlfriend and daughter. he killed another woman who died at the scene. s.w.a.t. teams moved in to get him. >> investigators may never know what caused this accident.

any new gun control legislation is likely to fail. turning to your money. a surgeon the stock market thanks to a surprise from the federal reserve. the dow jumped more than 147 points yesterday to a record high. the other major averages also jumped about 1%. all the buying came in response to the fed's announcement that it is not ready to stop the easing of stimulus on the economy even slightly. >> the fed is still not fully confident that the expansion of the u.s. economy is on a self-sustaining basis. the economy still needs this kind of stimulus. >> fed chairman ben bernanke said keeping the stimulus going is due to a weak economy. the threat of a government shutdown are putting a fragile economy at risk. those concerns are reflected in the fed's new economic outlook. it says the year's growth will be 2 to 2.3%.

be among the mourners at a memorial service sunday for those who died in the yafy yard shooting rampage. nbc's karen travers has more. >> the pentagon acknowledged there were red flags about aaron alexis. >> abc news learned he carved the words better off this way and elf weapon. authorities are trying to determine what those phrases could mean including whether better off this way meant alexis knew he would not survive his rampage. vectors are also piecing together clues about alexis' mental state. one recent incident stands out on august 7th at 6:00 a.m. he called the newport, rhode island, police. he claimed that after an argument at the airport they sent three people to follow him and keep him awake by talking to him and sending vibrations through his body.
