in colorado springs, colorado, police on accident alert status racing from wreck to wreck. in arkansas an icy collision on this highway bridge snarling traffic for hours. road accidents to blame for at least a dozen deaths across the country. a reminder to take extra care when hitting the roads for the holiday and roads aren't the only concern. in southern states, high surf already picking up off of florida beaches. all of this weather is headed to the northeast where they have already been enduring near record cold temperatures. in philadelphia, a record low of 20 means layers on layers and a frosty sight. this fountain is supposed to be turned off in this weather. now it is a winter photo op. in new york city concerns that strong, cold winds following the storm could prevent iconic balloons from flying at macy's thanksgiving day parade. when you hear a forecast like this, you immediately want to know if you are involved.

let's show you the map and this is what happened. the storm takes a big step in the southeast off the eastern seaboard off the coast of florida and becomes a coast runner. this is tuesday into wednesday. wednesday it is definitely along the east coast but should clear by thursday. it has a snowy component, up to 18 inches of snow in northwestern pennsylvania and western new york state. most people will see four to seven-inch line in the places that get snow or ice. rain, whole different story. that's the entire east coast, every major city and every major airport will see rain out of this on the east. and in some cases that is three, four, up to five inches of rain. sam champion, abc news, new york. >> thank you, sam. here's a look at the weather for the rest of the nation. clear and dry across most of the western u.s. stagnant conditions bringing increased air pollution to washington, oregon and idaho. light freezing rain in the ohio valley and a few inches of lake effect snow could fall in michigan. >> highs will range from the 60s

to 70s in california in the desert southwest to 50s in the northwest and 30s across the midwest in to the northeast. now to our other major story. we are learning more about the background of sandy hook shooter adam lanza. a new report from the prosecutor said lanza had a fascination with violence. and in the fifth grade wrote a book that included tales of children being slaughtered and a son shooting his mother in the head. photos from his bedroom were released. you can see the black garbage bag over his windows. his former scout master believes he was bullied and may have killed out of revenge. >> what adam was trying to do was come up with an act of revenge that was so awful that he would stab every american in the heart. >> other information discovered by investigators is kept secret out of consideration for the victims' families. a northern california family is hoping there won't be an empty place at the thanksgiving table. korean war vet merrill newman was taken in to custody by the

north koreans as he prepared to leave that country last month. family members are talking for the very first time saying that they're worried about his health and his safety. here's abc's bob woodruff. >> reporter: it's been 30 days since lee newman last heard from merrill newman. her husband of 56 years. now she's breaking her silence. >> we hope whatever the misunderstanding is will be resolved quickly and he can return and be at our table for the holidays. >> reporter: the newman family's big question, why was merrill arrested while the other tourists with him were allowed to fly home? >> they checked out of the hotel. gone it the airport, boarded the plane. and we understand were five minutes from taking off when a korean official came on board and asked to see his passport and he's been there ever since. >> merrill newman served in the korean war which remains a

sensitive topic in north korea. first time ever -- i've reported from there five times. always under tight supervision by a government minder. feel like i'm being guided. we were encouraged to watch films claiming north korea won the war. some accusing americans of war crimes. we know other american vets have traveled there without incident. why would merrill newman be an exception? >> that is part of the puzzle. he wasn't breaking new ground there. >> reporter: one of the family's main krnts concerns -- his heart condition. as for negotiations, the united states has no relationship with north korea. there's no ambassador, no diplomates. so we're really relying on the swedish ambassador to try to get him home by thanksgiving. bob woodruff, abc news, new york. >> let's hope so. north korea has detained six americans since 2009. two were journalists, and upon accusations in those six instances include trespassing, several

>> the threat along the beaches of south florida is rip currents. lifeguards are warning people to be careful. every year rip currents cause more than 100 drownings and account for 80% of beach water rescues. severe weather could cause headaches especially at the nation's airports. abc's ryan owens is at dfw. >> reporter: going nowhere fast. more than 300 flights cancelled at dallas-ft. worth airport, planes de-iced and passengers re-booked. not how anyone wants to start the trip to grandma's house this year. 25 million americans will get on a plane over the next week, and those planes will be full. more than 85% of seats taken on the busiest days. >> it's not as simple as if they cancel your flight you can hop on another plane. >> it is very difficult to re-book now. >> reporter: rick is the ceo of farecompare.com. he said airlines have gotten smart and cancelled flights at the first sign of a nasty storm.

has dropped on hopes more iranian oil could flow in to the global supply. john, diana? >> thank you. the family of a u.s. war vet held in north korea is asking for his safe return. merrill newman was taken in to custody almost five weeks ago as he prepared to return to the u.s. his son can't understand why the north koreans would detain an 85-year-old father who served in the korean war. >> part of the puzzle. he wasn't breaking new ground there. there is plenty of precedent for korean war veterans to return to north korea. >> former new mexico governor bill richardson has negotiated the release of several americans held in north korea. he confirmed last week he asked north koreans at the u.n. to let newman come home. there's been no reply. a contractor in philadelphia will face murder charges for his role in a deadly building collapse over the summer. 49-year-old griffin campbell is accused of ignoring warnings about the demolition.

it caused walls to crash down on a salvation army store. killing six people and injuring 13 others. campbell faces life in prison if convicted. the fda stopping sales of a popular do-it-yourself dna test. the agency says the operators of the 23 and me test have not proven the kits really work. the company claims the saliva based test will tell customers if they are at risk for hundreds of inherited health problems. the fda says false results could lead to users having unnecessary medical procedures. the morning after pill's effectiveness may be affected by a woman's weight. the makers found it either does not work or is less effective in women weighing more than 165 pounds. that's just about the weight of the average american woman. the fda is considering putting a warning label on the american version. wal-mart didn't have to look far for its new ceo. the world's largest retailer has chosen doug mcmillan that heads the international division. the 47-year-old has been with the company for 23 years and

olympic skier bode miller is embroiled in a custody drama over his 9-month-old son. but this one has some unusual twists and turns. >> it began before the baby was born and it involved two states and two names. abc's paula faris has the story. >> reporter: on the slopes, he's the most decorated skier in downhill history. but in court bode miller was fighting for custody of his son and the case had sweeping implications. >> if the courts decide that a father's rights begin at conception, that would be a fundamental change. >> reporter: miller is battling hex ex-girlfriend, sara mckenna, who became pregnant after a brief relationship with the skier in 2012. while pregnant, mckenna, a

former marine and firefighter, moved from california to new york city to study at colombia university. only after she claimed miller wanted little to do with the child. >> he requested that i cease communication with him. by all means, it was like giving me permission to leave. >> reporter: after the baby was born, mckenna said that miller changed his mind and accused her of fleeing with their unborn child. a new york court agreed. while ms. mckenna did not abduct the child. a california court granted miller custody. >> what kind of precedent could this case set? >> if a court ends up telling a pregnant woman where she can and can't travel, based on where the baby may be born that definitely sets a precedent. i think a dangerous one. >> reporter: these parents can't even agree on the baby's name. miller calls him nate. mckenna calls him sam. until the courts decide, the little boy remains caught in the middle.

that terrible day. it leaves many questions unanswered. here's our chief correspondent brian ross. caller's indicating she thinks someone's shooting in the building. >> reporter: reports said it took only 11 minutes for the shooter. but as to why adam lanza targeted the school, the state prosecutor said his investigation does not establish a conclusive motive. for the first time, officials released photos taken inside of lanza's home, where he first killed his mother. his bedroom and computer room had their windows covered by black garbage bags. there was a shooting range target with holes in it and video games that he spent hours playing. an open gun safe with a teddy bear on top and news clippings dating back to the 1890s showing an obsession with mass murders, in particular the columbine shootings. >> what is clear is he was thinking of committing this crime. >> reporter: police found a shattered computer hard drive that they say lanza destroyed. officials were able to recover emails that he exchanged with

others when were interested in the topic of mass shootings. >> school shooters go and do these things because it empowers them. >> reporter: out of consideration for the families, other material from the investigation that might ordinarily be made public is being withheld. including 911 calls and photos of the victims. to the relief of nicole, whose son was among those killed. she talked to lara spencer of abc news. >> what parent could want that? it serves no public good, it's not in anybody's interest. it's not the way i want dylan to be remembered. >> reporter: the report said that lanza had significant mental health issues but was well enough to plan the attack including the taking of his own life, all with guns legally purchased by his mother. abc news, new york. an anonymous call that triggered a day long lockdown at yale university is being called a hoax. s.w.a.t. teams descended on the

campus yesterday morning after the caller told police his roommate was headed to the school to shoot people. yale is on thanksgiving break but students were ordered to stay in their rooms as police went door to door. >> people are often not believing it's the police at their door. the doors do not have peepholes. >> reporter: someone also reported seeing a man with a rifle. police say they probably only spotted an officer responding to the scene. police promised to track down the man who made that initial prank call. new developments in this ohio rape case that stirred national controversy. the school superintendent and three others were charged with lying or failing to report possible child abuse. the charges are linked to the rape of a nearly passed out 16-year-old girl by two football players in steubenville. the players were convicted last march.

less than three months after the nfl settled a concussion lawsuit for $800 million ten former nhl players filed a similar suit. it claims the league was negligent in leading players to ignore treatment for concussions. they seek compensatory and punitive damages in a trial by jury. the nhl says it has handled player safety responsibly, and it plans to defend itself vigorously. reports say that suspended miami dolphins player paid off a woman to settle a harassment suit. it stemmed from him allegedly molesting a woman during a team sponsored charity golf tournament last year. incognito is said to have paid $30,000 to the women. she then signed a confidentiality agreement. he is suspended from the team as the bullying allegations against him are investigated. we are hearing for the first time from the oakland raiders' fan who saved a woman on sunday after watching his team play. 61-year-old donnie navidad said he saw the woman about three stories overhead on a ledge and then she jumped off. he ended up with severe bruising

on his arms and chest after she landed on him knees first. >> i'm not a hero. i don't want to say -- i don't wear a batman suit or superman or these characters. i just reacted the way i did. >> the woman suffered a serious head injury. she is in critical condition. >> he is curious to find out how the woman is doing. we have the information but he is having a hard time finding out what happened to her. obviously because he is just a member of the public. but obviously he is not only a member of the public, he stepped in and tried to save his life. >> he is 61 years old. doesn't look -- he's in great shape. >> vietnam veteran -- >> season ticket holder. >> a couple of members from the organization stopped by for a visit. there you see they obviously gave him a football. i guess in gratitude for what he did. >> i think he deserves a football for sure. at least. >> and a thank you from the woman who landed on him. >> somehow i hope his hospital bills aren't paid by him. that's bad luck. >> absolutely. moving on to the bay area's

other nfl team, the 49ers. they were here on the east coast last night visiting the redskins on "monday night football." the star of the show was san francisco quarterback colin kaepernick and he threw three touchdown passes and that was more than enough. the niners held the skins to two field goals. san francisco stays alive in the nfc wild card chase and they win it 27-6. finally something you don't see every day. it was caught in the atlantic ocean off of miami beach over the weekend. >> it is called a hook skate. wow. look at the size of that thing. it was caught by a charter fisherman that goes by mark the shark. he tagged it and released it back in the water. they usually live at the bottom of the ocean at depths of 1,000 feet. >> glad he let it go. the picture says it all, right. >> you have to wonder if it is that close to the surface it is probably sick. >> unless he was somehow way

traffic for hours. road accidents to blame for at least a dozen deaths across the country. a reminder to take extra care when hitting the roads for the holiday and roads aren't the only concern. in southern states, high surf already picking up off of florida beaches. all of this weather is headed to the northeast where they have already been enduring near record cold temperatures. in philadelphia, a record low of 20 means layers on layers and a frosty sight. this fountain is supposed to be turned off in this weather. now it is a winter photo op. in new york city concerns that strong, cold winds following the storm could prevent iconic balloons from flying at macy's thanksgiving day parade. when you hear a forecast like this, you immediately want to know if you are involved.

let's show you the map and this is what happened. the storm takes a big step in the southeast off the eastern seaboard off the coast of florida and becomes a coast runner. this is tuesday into wednesday. wednesday it is definitely along the east coast but should clear by thursday. it has a snowy component, up to 18 inches of snow in northwestern pennsylvania and western new york state. most people will see four to seven-inch line in the places that get snow or ice. rain, whole different story. that's the entire east coast, every major city and every major airport will see rain out of this on the east. and in some cases that is three, four, up to five inches of rain. sam champion, abc news, new york. >> thank you, sam. here's a look at the weather for the rest of the nation. clear and dry across most of the western u.s. stagnant conditions bringing increased air pollution to washington, oregon and idaho. light freezing rain in the ohio valley and a few inches of lake effect snow could fall in michigan. >> highs will range from the 60s

to 70s in california in the desert southwest to 50s in the northwest and 30s across the midwest in to the northeast. now to our other major story. we are learning more about the background of sandy hook shooter adam lanza. a new report from the prosecutor said lanza had a fascination with violence. and in the fifth grade wrote a book that included tales of children being slaughtered and a son shooting his mother in the head. photos from his bedroom were released. you can see the black garbage bag over his windows. his former scout master believes he was bullied and may have killed out of revenge. >> what adam was trying to do was come up with an act of revenge that was so awful that he would stab every american in the heart. >> other information discovered by investigators is kept secret out of consideration for the victims' families. a northern california family is hoping there won't be an empty place at the thanksgiving table. korean war vet merrill newman was taken in to custody by the north koreans as he prepared to leave that country last month.

family members are talking for the very first time saying that they're worried about his health and his safety. here's abc's bob woodruff. >> reporter: it's been 30 days since lee newman last heard from merrill newman. her husband of 56 years. now she's breaking her silence. >> we hope whatever the misunderstanding is will be resolved quickly and he can return and be at our table for the holidays. >> reporter: the newman family's big question, why was merrill arrested while the other tourists with him were allowed to fly home? >> they checked out of the hotel. gone it the airport, boarded the plane. and we understand were five minutes from taking off when a korean official came on board and asked to see his passport and he's been there ever since. >> merrill newman served in the korean war which remains a sensitive topic in north korea. first time ever -- i've reported from there five

times. always under tight supervision by a government minder. feel like i'm being guided. we were encouraged to watch films claiming north korea won the war. some accusing americans of war crimes. we know other american vets have traveled there without incident. why would merrill newman be an exception? >> that is part of the puzzle. he wasn't breaking new ground there. >> reporter: one of the family's main concerns -- his heart condition. as for negotiations, the united states has no relationship with north korea. there's no ambassador, no diplomates. so we're really relying on the swedish ambassador to try to get him home by thanksgiving. bob woodruff, abc news, new york. >> let's hope so. north korea has detained six americans since 2009. two were journalists, and accusations in those six instances include trespassing, several missionaries accused of spread ing christianity. >> the question like bob said is why merrill.

why would he be the one targeted as he was leaving the country? there might be some theories. some are speculating that newman may have been mistaken for a korean war silver star recipient. remember, he is a korean war vet but not a silver star recipient. this person is also named merrill newman. >> maybe they think he is an exceptional american hero. i think that trying to figure out a reason when you talk about north korea is almost -- almost a waste of time. i don't think they need a reason. just the kind of stuff they do. republican party leaders say a cocaine-using congressman should resign. trey radel plead guilty to cocaine possession and checked in to rehab last week. top florida republicans say he violated the trust of his constituents and should focus now on getting well. they question whether he can be effective when he returns to washington. president obama wrapping up a west coast fund-raising trip in los angeles this afternoon. a day after heckled in san francisco.
