this morning on "world news now" -- captured. american forces say they have taken down a terrorist. the mastermind behind the benghazi attack. what's next for one of the world's most wanted. path of destruction. the town leveled by not one but two tornadoes, as millions of americans face the threat of more twisters today. mother accused. a so-called mommy blogger facing serious charges. prosecutors say she poisoned her son on purpose in a very unusual way. and in "the skinny," big changes for the children's television classic "sesame street." it's not a new co-star for burt, ernie and big bird. it's something else. stay tuned. it's wednesday, june 18th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now."

good morning everyone, i'm reena ninan. >> i'm devin dwyer. happy hump day to you, reena. >> happy hump day. how are you adjusting? >> caffeine helps every little bit. >> you have amazing energy. i think i need a caffeine infusion. >> we'll get to that right after this. >> we have some serious news -- >> the alleged mastermind behind the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi will be in the u.s. where he is expected to undergo trial. >> that's right. ahmed abu khattala is undergoing intens questioning right now aboard a u.s. navy ship in the mediterranean sea. abc's brian ross has more on the capture. >> reporter: the u.s. had quickly determined the man it believed was one of the masterminds of the massive deadly tax in benghazi, but it was not until now, 21 months later, that the u.s. was able to capture ahmed abu khattala, the leader of an islamist terrorist group in libya. >> our special forces showing incredible courage and precision were able to capture an individual, abu khattala, who is

alleged to have been one of the masterminds of the attack. >> reporter: u.s. officials tell abc news that khattala had been under surveillance in libya for months. in fact, he was interviewed by reporters for cnn and others, denying his involvement and flaunting his presence in benghazi. >> if a cnn reporter can have an interview with him openly in a cafe, why couldn't we get to him sooner? >> reporter: u.s. officials say a plan to capture abu khattala was delayed after public outrage in libya over this video of the takedown of another accused terrorist in tripoli last october. the mother of one of the americans killed in benghazi told other san diego affiliate, katv, her questions about what happened are still not answered. >> i'm glad they got one of them. there were a whole bunch that set fire to that place. >> reporter: khattals is now being held on a u.s. naval ship

in the mediterranean where he is being interrogated before being returned to this country to stand trial, where he could face the death penalty. brian ross, abc news, new york. our other major story this morning -- more severe storms are zeroing in on the plains after a pair of giant tornados virtually leveled a town in nebraska. dozens of homes in pilger were completely destroyed and torn apart beyond repair. one of the twisters was an ef-4 swooping down with 200-mile-an-hour wind, leaving two people dead, including a 5-year-old girl. meteorologists were amazed by the size and intensity. >> often when we have a outbreak of multiple tornadoes, one is smaller and one less powerful. not the case here. two separate tornadoes, one parent thunderstorm. secondly, they were on the ground at the same time, a mile or two apart, rotating in the same direction, highly unusual. >> the violent weather didn't let up. storm chasers captured this enormous twister last night, touching down near the town. several tornados were also

spotted as well. a major clean-up and repair job is getting under way right now after three tornadoes touched down in southwestern wisconsin. the university of wisconsin at platteville campus was especially hard hit. the 140-mile-an-hour wind brought down the football field goal post, you see there, and knocked over other stadium light structures. inspectors found extensive damage on four campus buildings. that area is getting hammered again today. take a look. heavy rain and thunder from wisconsin to the northern illinois. severe storms with hail, heavy wind and in the dakotas, nebraska and ohio. get this, plan on snow, mountain snow, in parts of montana, wyoming and utah. >> hot and sticky along the gulf into the mid-atlantic coast with temperatures in the low to mid-90s. very hot but triple digits in the southwest and mild mid-70s reading in the west. well, president obama has apparently decided not to order air strikes against targets in iraq. at least for the time being. the president is expected to brief top congressional leaders

on the matter at the white house this afternoon. sunni and shiite leaders in iraq appeared on national tv in a show of unity and called for all citizens to put aside their differences and unite together as iraqis. well, workers at the va hospital in phoenix where investigators say veterans' health was jeopardized when employees covered up long wait times received $10 million in bonuses. a newspaper investigation found that more than 2,000 employees got the bonuses over a three-year period. those employees included doctors, nurses, administrators, secretaries and cleaning staff. for the first time we are hearing from the four of the acrobats injured last month during the hair hanging circus stunt in rhode island. the women crashed 20 feet to the floor as horrified families watched. now they're planning to take legal action. here's more from abc's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: it was a performance that went from dazzling to disaster. that circus rig holding eight

women suspended only by their hair collapsing. sending them plummeting to the ground. miraculously they all survived. and four of them are speaking out for the first time. >> we know that we are lucky to be alive. >> reporter: the performers refuse to talk about the accident. but another acrobat, 23-year-old samantha patard described that terrible moment. >> about three seconds in, you hear a huge crack and we just plummeted to the ground. it was really fast. i was still conscious, breathing really hard. it was really hard to catch my breath. because of the impact and the shock. >> reporter: five of the women remain in the hospital. the accident still under investigation. the investigation is focused on a tiny piece of equipment, this five-inch metal fastener known as a caribener is designed to support 10,000 pounds, but on the day of the accident it

snapped. in a statement, ringling brothers says "we continue to wish all of the performers a quick recovery so we can welcome them back." but the women say they are struggling and planning to sue. >> my dream was to be a star performer. now my dream is to get up and walk. >> reporter: her next step she says is simply taking one. mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. >> such a tough situation for those girls and their dreams. lawyers for the women haven't said who the focus of their lawsuit will be. but i would imagine could be the designer of the clip or the circus. >> there have been more than two dozen surgeries for these women. they come from various places. one of the hardest parts about this, like cruise ship workers, it's a lot of international workers. there are some from the u.s., brazil, bulgaria and ukraine. it will be interesting. one of the focuses might be the dunkin' donuts center, who might potentially be named in the lawsuit. we have to wait and see. moving on. more tough questions going to the general motors ceo mary

barra. she goes before congress to face criticism of gm ordered reports about its mishandled recall of millions of small cars. specifically lawmakers are expected to ask about what she knew about ignition switch problems when she was gm's development chief. one more note from the automotive world. reports say volvo is planning to start importing chinese-made vehicles to the u.s. next year. it's believed the vehicles will be volvo's s60l, a version of the mid sized sedan. volvo is not confirming specifics saying it will eventually import the cars from china not which models or when. and here's a follow-up about a story we told you about last week. the sale of a very, very expensive stamp. >> it happened here in new york. the 1856 british guyiana magenta sold to a buyer for a record $9.5 million. serious hike in the cost of postage for that one. >> it sure is. it's the fourth time the same stamp has broken the same auction price record. it has a long history.

♪ now, a horrible and heartbreaking crime to tell you about. a new york mother accused of murdering her little boy. prosecutors say she did it for attention on social media. >> they say she poisoned her son several times, each time seeking sympathy oe facebook. abc's molly hunter has the latest on this very disturbing case. >> reporter: a mommy blogger charged with murder. the victim, her 5-year-old son. the weapon, an overdose of salt. >> this mother was intentionally

feeding her child salt at toxic levels. >> reporter: 26-year-old lacey spears blogged constantly, posted multiple times a day on twitter, myspace and facebook. she wrote about parenting and play time with her son, garnett, and her son's chronic illness. my sweet angel is in the hospital for the 23rd time she tweeted in 2009. garnett was 1. five months ago january 23rd, spears posted on facebook, garnett the great journeyed onward today at 10:20 a.m. tuesday, charges of depraved murder and manslaughter were filed against lacey. >> this has been a research, plan and executed crime against her own son in a wanton and depraved manner. >> reporter: authorities suspect she poisoned the boy three times in january. during his last hospital stint, she had unmonitored access to her son and his sodium level spiked to suspiciously high levels. >> it's tragic when the caregive of any child does anything but

protect it at all costs. >> reporter: today lacy is held without bail and faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison. authorities suspect the abuse may have been fueled by attention. a disorder called munchausen by proxy in which a parent actually sickens a child to garner sympathy. and sympathy did come for lacey, but that sympathy has waned since her friends learned of the investigation and massive web of lies she told about her son and his health. >> i never heard of munchausen by proxy. that's fascinating. did we know if the mother's parenting was looked into or investigated? >> it was. apparently, several calls were made to child welfare services. the doctor connected too little, too late at this point. garnett was never taken from her care. we should learn more july 2nd when she is back in court. >> a fascinating case. abc's molly hunter. thanks for being here. coming up, we have "the skinny." stay with us. >> announcer: "world news now" continues after this from our abc stations.

likely crashed. experts at intel tell bbc their data point to a site in the indian ocean that has never been searched. ships will likely include the new location in the next phase of the search. flight 370 vanished more than 100 days ago with 239 people on board. overnight two death sentences carried out. the first since the botched execution in oklahoma seven weeks ago. a missouri man was put to death for killing two women. and in georgia, inmate marcus wellans was executed for the 1989 murder of his 16-year-old neighbor, india roberts. there appeared no complications in either of the executions unlike the one in oklahoma where the condemned man eventually died of a heart attack. students at a suburban detroit high school are facing major disciplinary action after an entire class was caught cheating on a final exam. school officials believe some students got ahold of the test answers while their teacher stepped out of the classroom. they took pictures, which then, they shared with everyone.

being held on a u.s. naval ship in the mediterranean where he is being interrogated before being returned to this country to stand trial, where he could face the death penalty. brian ross, abc news, new york. our other major story this morning -- more severe storms are zeroing in on the plains after a pair of giant tornados virtually leveled a town in nebraska. dozens of homes in pilger were completely destroyed and torn apart beyond repair. one of the twisters was an ef-4 swooping down with 200-mile-an-hour wind, leaving two people dead, including a 5-year-old girl. meteorologists were amazed by the size and intensity. >> often when we have a outbreak of multiple tornadoes, one is smaller and one less powerful. not the case here. two separate tornadoes, one parent thunderstorm. secondly, they were on the ground at the same time, a mile or two apart, rotating in the same direction, highly unusual. >> the violent weather didn't let up. storm chasers captured this enormous twister last night, touching down near the town.

several tornados were also spotted as well. a major clean-up and repair job is getting under way right now after three tornadoes touched down in southwestern wisconsin. the university of wisconsin at platteville campus was especially hard hit. the 140-mile-an-hour wind brought down the football field goal post, you see there, and knocked over other stadium light structures. inspectors found extensive damage on four campus buildings. that area is getting hammered again today. take a look. heavy rain and thunder from wisconsin to the northern illinois. severe storms with hail, heavy wind and in the dakotas, nebraska and ohio. get this, plan on snow, mountain snow, in parts of montana, wyoming and utah. >> hot and sticky along the gulf into the mid-atlantic coast with temperatures in the low to mid-90s. very hot but triple digits in the southwest and mild mid-70s reading in the west. well, president obama has apparently decided not to order air strikes against targets in iraq. at least for the time being. the president is expected to brief top congressional leaders

on the matter at the white house this afternoon. sunni and shiite leaders in iraq appeared on national tv in a show of unity and called for all citizens to put aside their differences and unite together as iraqis. well, workers at the va hospital in phoenix where investigators say veterans' health was jeopardized when employees covered up long wait times received $10 million in bonuses. a newspaper investigation found that more than 2,000 employees got the bonuses over a three-year period. those employees included doctors, nurses, administrators, secretaries and cleaning staff. for the first time we are hearing from the four of the acrobats injured last month during the hair hanging circus stunt in rhode island. the women crashed 20 feet to the floor as horrified families watched. now they're planning to take legal action. here's more from abc's mara schiavocampo. >> reporter: it was a performance that went from dazzling to disaster. that circus rig holding eight
