all. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. we are getting our first look at the hero train engineer who helped to save passengers in the fiery commuter crash north of new york city. >> he is being treated for smoke inhalation and trauma. observers say he did everything he could to avoid hitting the suv on the tracks. elizabeth hur has the latest from the crash scene. >> reporter: t.j. and reena, at daybreak investigators will be here to resume their work and while they believe it was a terrible accident, they want to know why this happened so it does not happen again. day one in the search for answers, ending with crews lifting and removing the wreckage off the tracks. these charred and mangled pieces of metal, the remnants of a fiery crash that killed six people just north of new york city. >> report of an explosion on the tracks. >> reporter: the commuter train had 700 passengers on board,

traveling at 58 miles an hour when an suv tried to cross the railroad got stuck on the tracks as the gates came down and the train kept coming. >> i was jolted out of my seat. >> reporter: then what? >> flames. i saw people behind me in the car falling over each other. >> reporter: the force of the impact pushed the suv 400 feet. the train's electrified third rail became dislodged and pierced the train sparking a massive fire. among those killed, 49-year-old driver of the suv, ellen brody, a mother of three. >> she was such a good person, such an mazing mom. a friend like you wouldn't believe. >> reporter: why she drove out on to the tracks and how she got stuck, friends don't know. investigators determined to find out. investigators are expected to be on the scene until the end of the week. but it could take up to a year before they complete their work and release their findings. t.j. and reena. >> thank you. we turn to a deadly plane

crash in west texas. a single-engine plane struck a tv tower in lubbock slicing the transmitter in half and knocking the station off the air. the pilot was killed and the plane completely mangled. it's not clear if anyone else was on board. a philadelphia architect is suing the tsa saying he was held 20 hours. he said security agents detained him after they found energy bars and a watch wrapped in a plastic pipe. why was that the case, he was trying to protect the watch he said. he was arrested and taken to a jail cell. after he filed a tsa complaint, he one allowed to make a phone call. he is seeking $75,000 in damages. no comment from the tsa. now to taiwan and the investigation in to the deadly plane crash. the plane's wreckage has been removed from the river where it crashed. the death toll from yesterday's accident is up to 31 people, and the search continues for those missing. abc's david kerley has more. >> reporter: the screams of drivers as this plane goes down. three different dash cams capture the remarkable, horrific scene.

the final seconds of the transasia's turbo prop's flight. the plane appears to be level and then the left wing dips, violently impacting with the bridge before crashing in to the river. crews able to rescue 15 people, among them four children including a 2-year-old. the rescuers cradling a child, gently making the move on to a boat and safety away from the wreckage. but the other 43 on board are dead or missing. the fuselage, possibly holding victims pulled from the river in darkness. this nearly new european built atr-72 had just taken off when the pilot radioed engine trouble. in the air less than four minutes the dramatic pictures frame by frame provide plenty of clues. >> the right engine appears to be spinning but the left feathered and the engine is probably not spinning on the left hand side.

>> reporter: this is the second deadly crash for transasia in less than a year. in this case the pilot had little time or distance to save his plane and all of his passengers. transasia airlines says it will check the engines of all similar aircraft. the black boxes have been recovered and should give us an idea why this plane went down so dramatically. david kerley, abc news. miami, international airport. a newly revealed pentagon report from 2008 reveals russian president vladimir putin may suffer from asperger's. according to "usa today," researchers that study putin's behavior and facial expressions believe he has a neurological abnormality that affects his decisions but can't prove their theory because they did not perform brain scans. the man set to be president obama's fourth defense secretary stood up to rapid fire grilled by republicans on capitol hill. ash carter answered a slew of foreign policy questions from the senate armed services

committee including his views on ukraine, syria and isis. carter promises to be an independent thinker. his nomination is set to go before the senate next week. a health headline about the measles outbreak now. lawmakers in california where are proposing legislation that would require children to get vaccinations before enrolling in school. it would eliminate the personal belief exemption. families with medical conditions could opt out. one criticism of vaccinations is the belief they cause autism. a lot of doctors out there will tell you that's not the case. a guy from the non-profit group, autism speaks came out saying, vaccines don't cause autism. we urge all children be fully vaccinated. a new round of snow is hitting from a storm in the great plains. snow blanketing kansas area is blamed for dozens of crashes. cars, school bus and trucks lost control on the slick roads slamming in to one another, sliding off of highways and

those roads could get even more dangerous as temperatures dip to the single digits. that bitter cold air is also gripping the northeast, keeping the coast guard busy breaking a thick layer of ice in connecticut. you can see the crew right here chipping away at a frozen river. the area is actually getting hit today from two directions. accu-weather's stephanie olmo has the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, reena and t.j. we are dealing with an arctic front producing snow showers. it will continue to track east producing minor accumulations. one to three inches is expected in the northeast area. as this continues to track east, we are keeping an eye on a second storm system coming in from the south. this will eventually combine with the first one, producing heavy snow across the eastern sections of maine and plunging temperatures causing for slick travel. reena and t.j., back to you. >> thank you so much. government regulators say in order to keep the internet from being taken over by big business

it needs to be reclassified as a public utility like land line services. fcc is proposing regulating service providers more closely so they don't slow down or block content. that means they wouldn't be able to play favorites when delivering data like streaming video, on-line games and shopping. the nation's first female postmaster general is a few in to her job but already talking about sources of revenue. she points to the postal service's testing grocery delivery in san francisco and water delivery in new york as new ways to generate income. she believes the agency must find a new way to be relevant and younger with consumers. there's a lot of work to be done. the postal service had a $5.5 billion shortage in the last budget. >> every budget we hear about some major shortfall at the postal service. they are trying everything they can. give them credit for at least trying. >> trying to appeal to younger folks, what did they do -- they used buying stamps and creating

i'm reena ninan. >> i'm t.j. holmes. here's some of the stories we are following on "world news now." commuter rail service returns to normal after a deadly collision. five passengers in the first car of the train were killed along with the driver of the suv stuck on the tracks. full details ahead. the wreckage of the plane that went down near a river near taiwan has been moved out of the water by a large crane. the death toll from yesterday's crash is at least 31. search for several missing people continues. health insurer anthem says it has been hit by hackers. potentially exposing the information of 80 million people including names, addresses, social security numbers but not credit card information. california lawmakers are proposing legislation to require children to get their vaccinations before enrolling in school. it would eliminate the personal

belief exemption but families with medical conditions could still opt out. those are some of our top stories on this thursday, february 5th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we are hearing incredible stories from passengers aboard the commuter train involved in a fiery crash near new york city. >> the damaged train was removed from the track after the ntsb investigators wrapped up their work at the scene. the rail line will be open for commuters and all victims have been identified. five passengers and the driver of the suv stuck on that track. josh einiger has more from the scene. >> we need fd asap. the first train car northbound is on fire. >> reporter: the catastrophic crash. metro north workers pried the mercedes suv from the wreckage and rolled the train to a nearby yard the search for answers was

only just beginning. >> the big question everyone wants to know is why was this vehicle in the crossing. >> reporter: eyewitnesses say the suv's driver, a 49-year-old mother of three named ellen brody was among a line of traffic detouring around accident on the taconic parkway and was already in the railroad crossing when the gate came down on her car. for some reason, she didn't move off the tracks. sources say the train was moving at 58 miles an hour, just under the speed limit. engineer steven smalls seen here in his hospital bed jammed on the brakes when he saw the suv but had no time to stop. it is what happened next that has the ntsb baffled. >> what makes this accident different? what would have made this different, that caused it to be fatal to five people on board the train. that's the heart of it. >> reporter: specifically investigators want to know how the electrified third rail came loose from the track bed and like a missile impaled itself in

to the train car. eyewitness news learned the third rail is likely what killed most if not all of the five passengers who died. before the flames, indeed before the train came to a stop and the survivors ran for their lives. >> i couldn't tell you if i was thinking am i go to die. >> i was like i need to get out of here right now. >> reporter: as you would expect after a plane crash, the ntsb recovered data from the recorders on every car of the train, even the crossing gates at that crossing. we could get data from the ntsb from those recorders sometime later today. in terms of the explanation for this horrible crash, investigators say it could take up to a year to come up with one. that's assuming they come up with one at all. josh einiger, abc news, valhalla, new york. we turn now to a deadly crash scene in lubbock, texas. after a small plane slammed in to the tower of a tv station. the pilot was killed when the plane sheered the 800 foot tower in half. the station was knocked off the entire neighborhood lost power. the pilot was on approach to the airport.

it is not clear if anyone else was on the train. a tragedy possibly averted in ohio when a car got stuck in in a snowy ditch. the car is engulfed in flames . the elderly driver was pulled to safety moments before a total stranger decided to help out after spotting the car on the road. derek wolf is his name. he got the man out after smelling smoke. not a moment too soon. wolf said he was at the right place at the right time. >> that driver is one of many struggling to make their way through the snow as a storm rolled in to nebraska. for more here's abc's rob marciano. >> reporter: the conveyer belt of storms is on the move again. colorado in the cross hairs. in denver, more than 40 accidents during the morning commute. just east in nebraska, whiteout conditions on the roads with over a half foot of snow.

minnesota 186 crashes in just six hours. and here in new york, temperatures finally creeping above freezing feels good but everyone had their eyes in the sky for another serious problem, falling ice. chunks of it. plummeting thousands of feet from the tallest building in the country, the world trade center. chicago, still digging out and that's a serious problem for dave steiber. >> my wife is pregnant. due any day. >> reporter: plows trying to catch up after nearly 20 inches dumped on the city. >> it is a mess and a shame it is still like this. >> reporter: rob marciano, abc news, new york. >> mother nature not given the northeast a break at all. a snowy morning for new york and boston. and much of new england. flooding downpours in northern california with heavy snow in the higher elevations. snow in the rockies and chilly in the mid-atlantic. >> teens and 20s minneapolis to detroit. 30s washington, d.c. to boston. 40s in dallas and atlanta. 50s in seattle, portland and new orleans.

a frightening scene at a public high school last night in maryland. two students shot outside while a basketball game was played inside. frantic parents rushed to the scene to make sure their children were okay while spectators ran for cover. students were flown to a baltimore hospital. their conditions are not life-threatening. police are looking for the shooter this morning. republicans in congress continue to hammer away at president obama's executive action on immigration. yesterday mr. obama fired back. here's abc's karen travers in washington. >> reporter: president obama sat down in the oval office with young immigrants, all undocumented. >> these six wonderful young people, who represent the very best that this country has to offer. >> reporter: the president's focus was keeping up the pressure on republicans with funding for the department of homeland security set to run out at the end of this month. republicans are using the issue to wage a fight against the white house over the president's executive actions on immigration which limited deportations for millions here illegally. >> i don't think that anyone wants to shut down the department of homeland security. what we want to do is block the

president's executive actions that were beyond the law and beyond his ability to make. >> reporter: the house passed a bill that will overturn those actions but continue funding for dhs. the-under that legislation, the six young people the president met with would be subject to eventual deportation. senate democrats blocked the bill from going forward for now. >> i will veto any legislation that got to my desk that took away the chance of these young people who, grew up here and who are prepared to contribute to this country that would prevent them from doing so. >> reporter: the president said he is confident the republican-controlled congress will not be able to overturn his veto. t.j., reena. >> thank you so much. another high-profile republican was talking about immigration, jeb bush following a detroit audience the u.s. should drastically increase the number of immigrants allowed to

enter the country to work in high-need jobs. a year ago chris christie was riding a tidal wave of popularity. a new poll shows otherwise. a survey by monmouth university finds 66% of those polled believe christie is more interested in a possible presidential run than governing the state. his job approval ratings have dropped to their lowest level since may of 2011. next up here, a kangaroo at mcdonald's. let's just go with that. this happened in wisconsin. the kangaroo is 8-month-old jimmy. you see him there? he lives with four other kangaroos. they are pets of a couple and they often take little jimmy out in public. last week, jimmy was taken in to a mcdonald's. another customer didn't think that was cool and called the police. >> it causes a lot of attention because you don't see a kangaroo every day, especially out of a cage, you know.

and effort? it is thursday, february 5th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> hey there. good morning to you all. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. ntsb investigators finished their work at the scene and the train what has been removed from the track. all six victims have been identified. five male passengers and a female driver in the suv on the tracks. >> a crane in place to remove the wreckage of the car. the charred aftermath of what started as any other commute home after a long day's work. the train departed from grand central terminal. 45 minutes in to the trip, disaster. the train rolling down the tracks at 58 miles an hour approaching a railroad crossing. just at that moment, a black suv tries to cross, but the gate comes down stopping it. the train, unable to slow down, keeps coming.

ellen brody, a mother of three, behind the wheel of the suv. rick hope just behind her on the road. >> the gate came down and hit the back of the car in front of me. she was trying to make it to the other side. >> reporter: she didn't make it. the train hit her suv, pushing it 1,000 feet, bursting in to flames. the electrified third rail ripped from the ground piercing the train itself. >> 400 feet of this third rail was shoved in to mostly the first rail car but at least one piece penetrated over in to the second rail car. >> reporter: chris gross was riding in the first train car. >> i was jolted out of my seat. >> reporter: then what? >> flames. i saw people behind me in the car falling over each other. >> reporter: smoke pours out of the train. the fire so hot the windows melted. inside chaos. >> people were yelling for a fire extinguisher, to call 911. a lot of yelling and screaming.

>> reporter: further back in the train, confusion but no panic. passengers waiting patiently until someone opens the door for them to escape. the suv barely recognizable. investigators pouring over the track tracks. the conductor miraculously survived, but five men riding on that train died. among them eric vandercar and walter liedtke. and so did ellen brody in her suv. why she drove out on to the tracks and couldn't get away, still a mystery. brody's husband posting on facebook, thanks for everyone who has expressed their condolences to their family and they plan to say a final good-bye to his wife on friday. linzie davis, abc news, valhalla, new york. investigators are equal waiting the black box from the plane in that crash. the search for 12 people continues in the river where the plane went down. it crashed after initially gaining altitude but not enough speed less than three minutes after takeoff. >> an airliner of any size is a

metallic egg shell. when used as designed it is very strong. in you smack a bridge with it will come apart and do terrible damage to anyone in the back of the plane. >> among the 15 survivors is a family of three including a premature baby who was brought back to life by cpr. bipartisan support is boosting aid to jordan. the u.s. had announced plans to increase aid to jordan to $1 billion. the senate armed services committee is pressing the obama administration to send more money, weapons and equipment to help jordan fight isis and secure the border with syria. thousands of jordanians welcomed their king home after he cut short his trip home in washington, d.c. king abdullah is trying to persuade his country to support a tougher line against the militants. people in jordan were outraged by the grisly death of that pilot but many are reluctant to support the u.s.-led bombing

campaign against isis. a high-profile trial of a former marine accused of killing chris kyle. he is subject of the movie "american sniper." eddie routh is charged with killing kyle and another man two years ago. he plans to plead not guilty by reason of insanity. at the murder trial of former nfl star aaron hernandez the mother of the semi pro football player who is the victim in the case will be back today. she received a warning from the judge before beginning her testimony. mara schiavocampo has more on the case. >> reporter: former new england patriots star aaron hernandez sat expressionless in court as the girlfriend of the man he is accused of murdering talked about how he tried to console her after his death. >> he said it will get better with time. >> reporter: he is accused of picking lloyd up in 2013 and driving him to the industrial

park where he was then killed. the defense trying to establish that hernandez and lloyd were good friends. that he had no reason to kill him. >> what you would consider a friend of the defendant. >> reporter: but the prosecution trying to show that hernandez and odin were not that close. >> how would you describe that? >> the beginning stages of a friendship. >> reporter: odin lloyd's mother took the stand. this was her last week when she saw a picture of her son's dead body. the judge giving her unusual instructions. >> you manage during this time you are testifying to retain control of your emotions. >> reporter: ordered to keep those emotions in check when her testimony in this highly emotional trial resumes today. mara schiavocampo, abc news, new york. the northeast is getting a fresh coat of snow this morning from a storm sweeping in from the great plains. snow blanketing the kansas city is blamed for dozens of crashes

>> from abc news this is "world news now." >> good thursday morning to you all. i'm t.j. holmes. >> i'm reena ninan. we are getting our first look at the hero train engineer who helped to save passengers in the fiery commuter crash north of new york city. >> he is being treated for smoke inhalation and trauma. observers say he did everything he could to avoid hitting the suv on the tracks. elizabeth hur has the latest from the crash scene. >> reporter: t.j. and reena, at daybreak investigators will be here to resume their work and while they believe it was a terrible accident, they want to know why this happened so it does not happen again. day one in the search for answers, ending with crews lifting and removing the wreckage off the tracks. these charred and mangled pieces of metal, the remnants of a fiery crash that killed six people just north of new york city. >> report of an explosion on the tracks. >> reporter: the commuter train had 700 passengers on board, traveling at 58 miles an hour when an suv tried to cross the railroad got stuck on the tracks as the gates came down and the

train kept coming. >> i was jolted out of my seat. >> reporter: then what? >> flames. i saw people behind me in the car falling over each other. >> reporter: the force of the impact pushed the suv 400 feet. the train's electrified third rail became dislodged and pierced the train sparking a massive fire. among those killed, 49-year-old driver of the suv, ellen brody, a mother of three. >> she was such a good person, such an mazing mom. a friend like you wouldn't believe. >> reporter: why she drove out on to the tracks and how she got stuck, friends don't know. investigators determined to find out. investigators are expected to be on the scene until the end of the week. but it could take up to a year before they complete their work and release their findings. t.j. and reena. >> thank you.

we turn to a deadly plane crash in west texas. a single-engine plane struck a tv tower in lubbock slicing the transmitter in half and knocking the station off the air. the pilot was killed and the plane completely mangled. it's not clear if anyone else was on board. a philadelphia architect is suing the tsa saying he was held 20 hours. he said security agents detained him after they found energy bars and a watch wrapped in a plastic pipe. why was that the case, he was trying to protect the watch he said. he was arrested and taken to a jail cell. after he filed a tsa complaint, he one allowed to make a phone call. he is seeking $75,000 in damages. no comment from the tsa. now to taiwan and the investigation in to the deadly plane crash. the plane's wreckage has been removed from the river where it crashed. the death toll from yesterday's accident is up to 31 people, and the search continues for those

missing. abc's david kerley has more. >> reporter: the screams of drivers as this plane goes down. three different dash cams capture the remarkable, horrific scene. the final seconds of the transasia's turbo prop's flight. the plane appears to be level and then the left wing dips, violently impacting with the bridge before crashing in to the river. crews able to rescue 15 people, among them four children including a 2-year-old. the rescuers cradling a child, gently making the move on to a boat and safety away from the wreckage. but the other 43 on board are dead or missing. the fuselage, possibly holding victims pulled from the river in darkness. this nearly new european built atr-72 had just taken off when the pilot radioed engine trouble. in the air less than four minutes the dramatic pictures frame by frame provide plenty of clues. >> the right engine appears to be spinning but the left

feathered and the engine is probably not spinning on the left hand side. >> reporter: this is the second deadly crash for transasia in less than a year. in this case the pilot had little time or distance to save his plane and all of his passengers. transasia airlines says it will check the engines of all similar aircraft. the black boxes have been recovered and should give us an idea why this plane went down so dramatically. david kerley, abc news. miami, international airport. a newly revealed pentagon report from 2008 reveals russian president vladimir putin may suffer from asperger's. according to "usa today," researchers that study putin's behavior and facial expressions believe he has a neurological abnormality that affects his decisions but can't prove their theory because they did not perform brain scans. the man set to be president obama's fourth defense secretary stood up to rapid fire grilled by republicans on capitol hill. ash carter answered a slew of foreign policy questions from the senate armed services committee including his views on

ukraine, syria and isis. carter promises to be an independent thinker. his nomination is set to go before the senate next week. a health headline about the measles outbreak now. lawmakers in california where are proposing legislation that would require children to get vaccinations before enrolling in school. it would eliminate the personal belief exemption. families with medical conditions could opt out. one criticism of vaccinations is the belief they cause autism. a lot of doctors out there will tell you that's not the case. a guy from the non-profit group, autism speaks came out saying, vaccines don't cause autism. we urge all children be fully vaccinated. a new round of snow is hitting from a storm in the great plains. snow blanketing kansas area is blamed for dozens of crashes. cars, school bus and trucks lost control on the slick roads slamming in to one another, sliding off of highways and those roads could get even more

dangerous as temperatures dip to the single digits. that bitter cold air is also gripping the northeast, keeping the coast guard busy breaking a thick layer of ice in connecticut. you can see the crew right here chipping away at a frozen river. the area is actually getting hit today from two directions. accu-weather's stephanie olmo has the latest. good morning, stephanie. >> reporter: good morning, reena and t.j. we are dealing with an arctic front producing snow showers. it will continue to track east producing minor accumulations. one to three inches is expected in the northeast area. as this continues to track east, we are keeping an eye on a second storm system coming in from the south. this will eventually combine with the first one, producing heavy snow across the eastern sections of maine and plunging temperatures causing for slick travel. reena and t.j., back to you. >> thank you so much. government regulators say in order to keep the internet from being taken over by big business it needs to be reclassified as a public utility like land line

services. fcc is proposing regulating service providers more closely so they don't slow down or block content. that means they wouldn't be able to play favorites when delivering data like streaming video, on-line games and shopping. the nation's first female postmaster general is a few in to her job but already talking about sources of revenue. she points to the postal service's testing grocery delivery in san francisco and water delivery in new york as new ways to generate income. she believes the agency must find a new way to be relevant and younger with consumers. there's a lot of work to be done. the postal service had a $5.5 billion shortage in the last budget. >> every budget we hear about some major shortfall at the postal service. they are trying everything they can. give them credit for at least trying. >> trying to appeal to younger
