diversity will exist in the new district. >> we are maintainin an open transfer policy so we can continue to have 400 to 600 transfer students in our schools from diverse neighborhoods throughout mt. diablo school district as well as elsewhere. >> tonight's meeting is set for 6:00 at heather farms and the county office of education will make the decision on whether the idea will move forward and then the state would then have to approve the new district which would be made up of five schools, much smaller than the current district with 56. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. we have new details about the stabbing suspect in berkeley. take a look at the police sketch. it happened on san diego road. the man stabbed the victim in the abdomen without being provoked and if this man looks familiar to you please call

police. and then a murder suspect involved in a 19-hour standoff with police. he killed his wife in walnut creek on thursday. he was tracked to martinez where he refused to get out of his car despite a long night of negotiating by police. he finally surrendered almost 24 hours after the shooting. a san francisco religious leader who led a battle to ban same-sex marriage has died. the archbishop died of lun disease yesterday in san rafael. he was an opponent of opposition 8. he was 80 years old. janet napolitano is apologizing this morning for interfering in a state audit into the school system. she says while we believe we did things appropriately it's clear in retrospect we could have

handled it differently. she suggested they changed their answers to make the system look better, and the audit uncovered $175 million in secret funds and this is as uc was asking to raise the tuition. angry san jose parents are asking for a meeting. 29% of students at luther burbank elementary didn't show up to school yesterday. 150 of the students were absent. they are upset about the district's plan to layoff employees. the school district is trying to reverse a budget deficit and facing a $575 short fall this year and another $542,000 next year. and then proposing to use an

empty district building for the homeness at van yes and 26th street. it will cost about $400,000 to outfit that property to use as a shelter. the city hopes to use it through february or march, and as you may remember, there was loud opposition for much of the community on that. a lyft drive's camera was rolling when this happened. >> you got a gun? >> i am a lyft driver and i just got shot at. i didn't get hit but i just got shot at! >> he is okay. that driver says he refused service to two riders in detroit on friday night because he thought they were doing something illegal so he kicked the two out of his car. as they got out one of them grabbed cash from up front. the driver went after them and that's when they started shooting. the driver says he doesn't want to identify himself because the

an update on the rollover crash around zanker road. that is backing up solid to 880 and maybe spilling over on 80 at this point. you may want to consider the expressway for an alternate. and southbound 880 before a street in hayward. the crash was off on the shoulder and they are hanging over slightly into the far left lane so traffic heavy in that area as well. this is not what residents in petaluma wanted to hear. new details on the plans to silence the smart trains through petaluma. the trains are blaring their horns again. trains resumed their honking yesterday. yep, just like that. the railroad administration ordered the change for safety reasons, and residents were

6:14. look at this out of houston, texas. it shows a man and woman fighting in the parking lot. the woman is in all white and the hat, and the man an off-duty county deputy. not clear what started the fight but you can see the man push the woman as the white car was backing up and she pushed back and then the fight started. the deputy got arrested. a texas police officer has been fired and could face charges in the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy. the police chief says that officer violated many department policies when he shot and killed jordan edwards on saturday night. it was as police were responding to several underaged kids drinking at a home. police originally said the driver tried to use the vehicle as a weapon, but after the

unable to give everything on the list. and then the lamar murder trial, prosecutors finishing their closing arguments and they are trying to convince the juror torres is guilty of murdering the teenager. d the defense says she ran away from home and is still alive. garcia torres may face the death penalty if convicted. and the family of a boy says it forgives the person that shot and killed him on thursday. he was shot while driving down sunset boulevard. police have not determined if jackson or his 16-year-old passenger were targeted. jackson's family says he had not been going to school and was having some issues but was well loved. >> we always hugged and kissed when we greet one another.

teachers are in a fight over splitting a school district in the east bay. >> if some parents get their way the area you see in red would be a new smaller district. abc7 news reporter, haimamy hollyfield, live for us in walnut creek. >> reporter: there's another public meeting about this issue tonight and they also had one last night and this issue brings out very strong opinions from people. tose who are against it say the new district amounts to segregation, that the new district would be made up of white affluent students and they think it would hurt the mt. diablo unified district and those that want to create the new district say the current one is too big and has too many schools in it and their needs and concerns have been ignored. >> it has 33,000 students and it's too big to manage 56 schools, so we're trying to have a community-based school district that would have five schools and about 4,600

students. >> reporter: parents for the idea had on orange t-shirts last night and those against it held a rally precipitation walnut creek city council voted to endorse the idea of a new smaller district and the superintendent is against it. it's up to the county office of education to decide if this idea moves forward, so tonight's meeting will help the decision makers that is set at 6:00 tonight at heather farms and if it gets forwarded on the state ultimately has to approve this. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> it would be interesting to watch that. thank you. every day there is one video you have to see, and today this video is it. you will see a plane streak across the sky and catch fire as it makes a crash landing. look at that. dashcam video caught the moment a small plane crashed 25 miles north of seattle. this happened yesterday during the height of rush hour. the plane lost power at 500 feet

fortunately unlocked and the officers were able to get that dog out quickly and they did give the owner a citation. here at the live desk, want to show you the incredible video we got just a few minutes ago. it's a school bus that went up in flames. no kids were hurt. they were not hurt all thanks to a good samaritan credited for spring into action, helping these kids get off the school bus when it caught fire. elementary school kids. this happened in kansas city, missouri. the good samaritan got all 33 kids off the bus and you see the firefighters getting the flames out. the bus driver said there was some sort of weird noise coming from the vehicle. this morning they are investigating exactly what went wrong. back to you. >> thank you. happening today pg&e holding a public meeting to update the residents of the marina district about possible toxins under their homes.

baggage fees are up for u.s. airlines. >> according to a new government report we paid $4.2 billion last year, about a million dollars per day to get our bags where they are supposed to go. ticket prices were down 1%, and that's surprising. airline executives say the extra baggage fees help to keep the fares down. and then according to our media partners, the san francisco police department plans to hire 100 entry level officers by the end of the year. they are going to go to job fares and host monthly workshops

and it starts with an online application and we posted that on our website, t-mobile plans to unveil new 5g service in 2019. the network will enable customers to download high definition movies in second. at&t said it plans to launch 5k in 2018. more students at this pennsylvania high school are coming forward and claiming they are being abused by administrators and an attorney that is already representing two high school students say two more students have come forward with similar stories. the attorney released the video that proves authorities at the school use excessive force. the principal threatened to knock out one student's teeth and the family of that student plans to sue.

and then a dangerous intersection is now getting an upgra upgrade. it's between castro and the octavia onramp. the plan is to put the bike ramp between the sidewalk and parked cars to create a safety buffer. more than 50 cyclists have been injured on that stretch in five years. holding a news conference to ask muni officials for more time to cross the street. the group is called senior and disability action and wants traffic signals to give them a few extra seconds to get across. they made a similar plea five years ago. the city launched the zero seugs campaign and their goal is to eliminate all traffic deaths. if you don't have ac it might have been hard to sleep last night, and mike we are not done with the heat yet. >> not yet but i think you will sleep better tonight than in many areas than you did last

green at ten minutes. now back to the breaking news we told you about at the top of the hour. an investigation under way into an officer-involved shooting in san jose. matt keller joins us at the scene. >> reporter: i am standing here on mt. fraser drive and they have crime scene paint to prevent anybody from walking in and they have an officer preventing any vehicles from coming in as well, and the crime scene police have been here all night, and this happened around 11:35 after there was a report of an family disturbance. a man was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries and no word on his conditions right now and the officer will be placed on paid administrative leave. the homicide department are investigating. we are told that the chief will be speaking later to the media today and we will get more details on what exactly happened here last night.

pg&e learned a tragic lesson we can never forget. this gas pipeline ruptured in san bruno. the explosion and fire killed eight people. pg&e was convicted of six felony charges including five violations of the u.s. pipeline safety act and obstructing an ntsb investigation. pg&e was fined, placed under an outside monitor, given five years of probation, and required to perform 10,000 hours of community service. we are deeply sorry. we failed our customers in san bruno. while an apology alone will never be enough, actions can make pg&e safer. and that's why we've replaced hundreds of miles of gas pipeline, adopted new leak detection technology that is one-thousand times more sensitive, and built a state-of-the-art gas operations center. we can never forget what happened in san bruno. that's why we're working every day to make pg&e the safest energy company in the nation.
