off. to the end zone, touchdown. >> the college football playoffs live up to the hype with a do overtime thriller. so who will play in the championship as tickets for that approach super bowl prices. a good tuesday morning to you all. we begin with the bitter cold weather gripping most of the country even the south. >> yeah, the overnight low in tampa, florida, is 37 degrees where cold weather shelters are now open for the homeless and anyone who lives in a home without adequate heat. >> chicago called off the polar bear plunge due to too much ice on lake michigan and officials worried the cold might be downright dangerous. stephanie ramos has more. >> reporter: so far 2018 is off to a bitterly cold start with record-setting low temperatures and dangerous winds. the high temperature in chicago

on new year's day, just 1. in new york city 9 degrees at midnight for the ball drop. hundreds of manatees popping up in the wears new blue springs state park in florida trying to escape the cold. >> the water temperatures drops below 68 degrees they'll search for a warmer water. >> reporter: the cold temperatures relentless from frozen fountains to several spinouts on icy roads. watch as this emergency personnel worker almost gets hit by a car as he slips on the ice. >> afraid to stop somebody and afraid to keep going. >> reporter: so many people layering up to battle the cold temperatures that are feeling more like below zero from the midwest to the northeast. >> cold has affected a lot of things. >> reporter: this family stocking up on water. the water pipes in their home frozen. >> gallons of water for flushing the toilet and our friends brought these over right away. >> reporter: their water company

can't do much. >> you have to wait for it to thaw, they said. >> oh, boy, the northeast is seeing some of the coldest temperatures in a century. >> so the deep freeze extends from the rockies, of course, to the east coast and won't let up any time soon. now here's a look at your weather. >> good morning, diane, kendis. well, we are expecting perhaps a foot of snow once again with additional lake-effect snow in effect. possibility of whiteouts and travel disruption likely around the great lakes region just about for everyone. taking a look where we're expecting the cold wave will persist staying frigid for the northeast, snow showers around the great lakes, arctic air punching its way ferociously across the ohio valley region and looking for it to hit the deep south and in jackson all the way to tampa. ken, diane.

>> breaking overnight a computer outage caused long lines at airports across the country. the customs computer system went down leading to lines up to four hours long. the government says national security was not compromised and it does not think this was a malicious attack. but passengers weren't happy. >> i missed my connecting flight but then it was delayed and i'm going to miss it again because i don't know where to go and nobody seems to be able to help me. >> customs and border protections says it's back up running and all airports are online. south korea is offering to hold talks with rival north korea about possible participation in the winter olympics. kim jong-un mentioned that he might be open to sending a delegation to the games held in south korea next month and said it would be a good opportunity to show off his country's status. >> in iran at least nine people have been killed in new anti-government clashes. overnight rioters reportedly tried to storm a police station to steal weapons and the

demonstrations are entering a sixth day and started thursday over rising price, high unemployment and corruption. at least 20 people have been killed so far. several others have been wounded and hundreds have been arrested. the president is hoping to get back to business after wrapping up an 11-day stay at his resort in florida. he returned to the white house last night facing an ambitious to do list. he's preparing to roll out his infrastructure plan and work out deals on immigration and government funding even after north korean leader kim jong-un warned that the nuclear button was on his desk and the entire u.s. was within striking distance. the president remained optimistic. >> so we're going to have a great 2018. it's going to be something very, very special. it's all kicking in. we had some pretty good enemies out there but step by step they're being defeated. some bad people, bad people. someday maybe they'll love us, i don't know.

coast guard crews rushed to save an 89-year-old man from sinking car in florida. the crew saw the car as it plunged into the waters at a marina in panama city. they broke a car window and pulled the man to safety. police say the victim had a medical issue that caused the car to roll off the pier and into the water. he's expected to be okay. a team from the ntsb is now joining the investigation into the crash that killed ten americans in costa rica. they're looking at strong winds as a likely factor but not ruling out possible mechanical problems. the small plane went down killing two american families, a tour guide from wisconsin and two local pilots. the families were bruce and

irene steinburg of new york and their three sons from florida. mitchell and leslie weiss also died in that crash. both doctors traveling with their two children. and a southwest airlines flight was forced to return to seattle after experiencing a problem with the nose gear. the plane was headed to baltimore on monday when the mechanical issues cropped up. the pilot had to circle over washington state to burn fuel before landing safely at sea-tac airport. well, today the suspect in a deadly prank makes his first court appearance. tyler barriss faces a judge in los angeles. he is accused, though, of calling in a fake hostage situation to police in wichita, kansas. officers shot and killed an innocent man while responding to that bogus call. now, barriss was convicted of making a false bomb threat in l.a. in 2015. that's a major fireworks blast in houston caught on camera. it happened at what was supposed to be a celebration of the new year. that changed when one firework landed on the trunk of a car and

set off 600 others. no one was hurt. california's first marijuana stores are open for business. it's the largest state now and the latest state for that matter to legalize the purchase of marijuana for recreational use. about 90 retailers have the proper licenses, but there are no stores yet in los angeles or san francisco. those cities haven't worked out their local licensing regulations yet. the new year also brought about some bigger paychecks for low wage workers in more than three dozen states and cities. the pay increases range from 35 cents in michigan to $1 in maine. other states will have smaller automatic increases that adjust the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation. the federal minimum wage is still $7.25 an hour. when we come back, the superstar singer who says she might look different after keeping a serious injury a secret. and also ahead, banning together in hollywood. how a group of a-list actresses are fighting back against sexual harassment in tinseltown. and an instant classic. we have the highlights from the

never in my world would i have imagined this. >> the gunman died sunday as well. he was an iraq war veteran and graduated law school at the university of wyoming. the school warned students when he posted facebook rants. police in texas are looking for a man who may be connected to the disappearance of two girls. they were discovered missing when police went to their home north of austin on a welfare check. instead the cops found a dead woman. the girls are age 7 and 14. the 44-year-old man lived with them and is described as a person of interest. there is now an amber alert for the girls. former fox news anchor gretchen carlson who was miss america back in 1989 is the new leader of the pageant. carlson takes over as chairwoman following the former ceo's resignation. now, last month e-mails surfaced which included controversial comments about past contestants' looks and sex lives. carlson left fox after suing its former chairman for sexual harassment. and overnight she tweeted that she was honored to take on her

new role. well, hundreds of women in hollywood are backing a new initiative to fight sexual harassment. it's called time's up. the goal to fight abuse and promote workplace equality. top actresses behind time's up include reese witherspoon and nicole kidman as well as jennifer lawrence. the initiative includes a multimillion dollar legal defense fund to help women who do not hold positions of power. and country singer carrie underwood is revealing that she suffered more than a broken wrist when she fell on the steps of her home back in november. in a post to her fan club, she announced that she also needed more than 40 stitches on her face. underwood said she's healing, but she might look a bit different the next time fans see her. she added that she's grateful it wasn't much worse. nhl players won't be at the olympics for the first time since 1994. that means there is a chance for moments like this. 30-year-old bobby butler of the american hockey league's milwaukee admirals just found out that he's representing

the u.s. you see and you hear the cheers there. he tells his dad the news and he gets a big hug. team usa opens its schedule in south korea on valentine's day. awesome. and we now know the finalists for the college football title. >> yes, we get the details from our friends at espn. good morning, america. i'm scott van pelt with this "sportscenter" update. new year's day bowl games typically a fun day to hang out on the couch and enjoy some football. what a day monday was if you love the college game. georgia/oklahoma, a classic touchdown there from nick chubb ties the game. they go into overtime. in double overtime, austin seibert's 27-yarder is blocked by lorenzo carter who hangs in the air and just gets his fingertips on it, so georgia now just needs a field goal to move on to the national championship game. they get more than that. sony michel with his game-winning touchdown, his fourth touchdown of the day. baker mayfield, the heisman

winner, not just the game, but his career comes to an end and said afterwards, i can't believe it's over. georgia wins an epic rose bowl game to move on to the final to take on alabama. there were more than a thousand yards of offense in that game, less than half that in this one. part three, alabama and clemson and it's fitting that da'ron payne gets the touchdown. he's a defensive tackle. it was his kick that started the drive and then the big fella with a touchdown and then the very next drive for clemson, it all falls apart here as the pass from kelly bryant is deflected. mack wilson takes it in 18 yards. and 'bama earns some revenge for their title loss to clemson last year, the third consecutive year those teams had met in the playoffs, so once again it will be alabama and georgia next monday in atlanta. enjoy your day. we'll see you soon. >> thanks, you too. and right now the cheapest ticket on stubhub for the championship game is $2,000. >> that's the least expensive one, so georgia fans were so excited when the bulldogs won the rose bowl, that stubhub actually crashed.

the low 40s and the coolest, even mid 50s around fremont and san francisco. how are we starting, sue? >> quiet, very quiet. we will see how that plays out as the morning goes on, but walnut creek those taillights towards highway 24 southbound and traffic moving at the limit here. to the san matteo bridge, pardon me, that is not your 80 traffic, but we will look at the san matteo bridge, traffic is flowing nicely, about 14 minutes from hayward over towards foster city. we are tracking some breaking news, a fire burning at a cardboard factory in santa clara. >> one of the concerns is hazardous material. matt keller live for us on the scene. matt? >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. a lot of smoke coming off this fire here in santa clara. that is why firefighters are putting some water on it here, they're making sure that we get the flames out that are in these cardboard piles that are stacked

here next to the manufacturing plant. the good news, though, the plant manager confirms all employees have been evacuated from the building and are accounted for. check out this video tweeted by the santa clara fire department. a lot of fuel. this is a cardboard manufacturing plant on matthews street, in the storage area on the outside of the building, it is not in the building. several cardboard bales are stacked 15 feet high. overhead high voltage lines made it extra dangerous for the firefighters on scene. >> one of our biggest concerns was basically making sure those lines were shut down before we got too aggressive or put ourselves to be in a position underneath them because roughly four to five of the poles were exposed to heavy fire when we showed up on scene. >> reporter: firefighters say once they get the flames out they will have to start tearing apart these piles of cardboard, make sure nothing is smoldering inside. the san jose airport is close by. firefighters say they will notify officials in case they want to reroute traffic because of the smoke but firefighters don't expect that to be a major

issue. they will be out here for several hours today. reporting live in santa clara, matt keller. a newly refurbished historic streetcar derailed after colliding with a truck in san jose. this happened at 3rd and mission bay boulevard last night. muni says the truck made a turn in front of the streetcar. the truck ended up on its side. nobody got hurt. if you are just joining us let's get a quick update on weather and traffic starting with meteorologist mike nicco. >> good morning. checking out the winds outside to see if you will have any issues. traveling some of our higher elevations or across our bridges, we are calm to maybe 6 miles per hour. so high pressure still on top of us. stagnant air, poor air quality once again. our 18th winter spare the air. we will start off in the mid 40s to 50 at 7:00. as we head through your accuweather 12 hour planner get used to low to mid 60s and pretty mild this evening mid to up
