turn heavier over the next couple of hours. we find light rain from alameda over to oakland as well. zoom on down to the peninsula and san jose seeing some light showers late tonight. this cold front is going to move through, so on the storm impact scale over to christmas day again the heaviest rain will fall before the sun gets through. new at 11:00, guess what, times up. this year's christmas shopping season is officially at its end. anser hassan live at walnut creek with a last minute look at those gifts. >> reporter: target was one of those stores that was open late tonight, they closed at 10:00.
and the fact it wasn't raining probably helped. vanessa and her partner admit it was tough shopping for christmas gifts but their bags were full. she says shay still got some great gifts even though he says he'd rather be at home. >> to tell you the truth, not so much. i'd rather be at home, chilling, hanging out with the family but it is nice to get together and stroll around. it's not too cold out here. the good weather is perhaps one reason why the outdoor shopping center at wall net week was buzzing. then there were the shoppers who come out on christmas eve. they say it's all part of the plan. >> every christmas eve this is how we do it, it's nice and calm and no one out and around. >> he knew what he wanted to buy, so he wasn't in any rush, and he knows stores are open

tastes asyou'll see. now employees are sharing security video with employees and with abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow. >> reporter: thousands of dollars worth stolen. sophisticated shoplifters managed to get past employees at several stores this month saying they were visiting fro paris. in the surveillance video you can see them stuffing jackets worth thousands under their outer wear. >> the pros are so good they can do it in front of you and you would never know you were being picked. >> reporter: no masks with, no smash and grab. the crooks according to employees were actually quite engaging. employees couldn't tell anything was missing until they were gone. >> it does make me ill. >> reporter: the next day two of the three hit up sweden spart which sells vintage jewelry, purses and scarves it procures
from estate sales. >> we've never had an issue in the past. >> reporter: as this woman looked at scarves. >> she like held up a bunch of them in front of like my coworkers face. >> reporter: the man snatched a rare vintage pink chanel purse and stuffed it up his jacket. this is picture of the handbag. >> what's weird is he actually shook my coirker's hand when they left. >> reporter: a spokesperson tells abc 7 news police are investigating whether the people in both videoses are the same. northern station officers patrol the area but store employees are not sure if that would have made a difference in these cases. san francisco police say since the end of november there's actually been a slight decrease in thefts and robberies citywide. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. new developments in the story of an oakland mother's fight over a vacant home. the oakland city council ordered
the property owners to negotiate with the homeless women or face possible seizure of that property. today an alameda county court issued a tentative ruling against the group, mothers for housing who moved into the house last month. the court denied all the claims for the women and issued notice of eviction they have to go. the group said they're drawing attention to the homelessness crisis. president trump responding to north korea after its government issued a warning of a christmas gift to the u.s. if there isn't a change in sanctions. u.s. military officials expect kim jong-un will order tests of long-range missiles capable of reaching the united states. kim jong-un promised president trump during their two summits that he would not test those kinds of weapons. since then relations have gone south with the north koreans conducting more short range missile tests this year. president trump is brushing off these threats. >> we'll find out about the
surprises and we'll deal with it very successfully and we'll see what happens. everybody's got surprises for me. president trump also says north korea's christmas gift could be a beautiful vase as opposed to a missile test as the president put it today. also today president trump thanked members of the military for their service this christmas eve. he spoke via video teleconference with u.s. troops stationed around the world from his mar-a-lago resort in florida. president trump praised all five branches of the military. >> americans can celebrate christmas and safety in a peace we all appreciate and we thank you very much. >> at one point during the 30-minute call the president took questions from the service members. one soldier stationed in kuwait asking what he got first lady melania trump for christmas this year, he said he was still working on it, procrastinating i suppose like a lot of us. move over redaufl, santa is

in the south bay donations are pouring in tonight to our lady of one video caught the moment as one of them took a donation box. >> i never thought someone would just come in and be part of the assembly and leave. >> it was just brazen as you can see. tonight someone donated $4,000. another person contributed $1,000 to a gofundme page for the church. the fund-raiser had surpassed it's goal of $5,000. happening now you may see chp patrols. it started at 6:00 tonight and will continue through midnight tomorrow. all available officers will be out for increased enforcement to keep us safe.
they'll be watching for drunk or high drivers in particular. triple-a is once again offering its tipsy tow service of tow up to 10 miles for any drivers not just triple-a members. the free tow begins through 6:00 p.m. tuesday through 6:00 a.m. on new year's day. drivers should call 1-800 triple a help for the free tow. livermore firefighters are congratulating a rookie firefighter on his very first cat rescue today. the livermore fire department received a call about a cat struck in a tree. firefighter mike salazar climbed up the ladder and brought the cat back to its owners. the family of the cat very happy to his work and was then treated to a tour of the fire engine. good job, mike. only on abc 7 ride share
customers in the south bay are coming across a familiar face. father christmas, santa is getting behind the wheel in san jose and made some house calls. amanda delcastillo was there. >> reporter: move over redaufl, he's making seven trips, checking his sights and ditching the streets and hitting san jose in a tucson. the man behind the beard is john flores. he threw on a santa suit a few days ago with the goal of spreading holiday cheer. in the drivers seat flores delivered, flores posted to a community facebook group about his experience. he explained it caused him nothing to create lasting memories of those who spotted santa behind the wheel. >> people from 6 to 60 would be
santa, santa, santa and made me think in that time of innocence when you knew santa was coming to your house because you were special. >> reporter: then came a special request from a complete stranger. would flores be willing to make a house call on christmas eve. they wanted to keep the magic of christmas alive for 2-year-old fara and 9-year-old tommy. >> he's going to be 10 soon so i don't know how magical it would for them. >> reporter: the trip priceless, flores said he'll be logging off uber and leaving christmas day to chrkris kringle. >> an iranian refugee who founded a bay area tech firm paid off the lunch debt for hundreds of oakland students. we learned today one planet ceo donated over $15,000 to the oakland unified school district. he says he wasn't allowed to go to school in iran because of his
religion. he says if students do not have access to a meal, then they do not have full access to their education. so he stepped up to make a difference. pope francis celebrated christmas eve mass in a packed st. peters basilica. the pope said the birth of jesus that christians commemorate on christmas day was a reminder of god's uncondiional love for everyone. his message to the people included the quote, god does not love you because you think and act the right way, he loves you plain and simple, his love is unconditional, end quote. and abc 7 reporter went to christmas eve in the park today to talk to the children about their holiday wishes. they were predictably sweet and often brutally honest. >> one of my christmas wishes is i hope my family will have a

also likely some snow. that's the white you see on live doppler 7 so we could wake up to a white christmas. a couple of lightening strikes off the coast right now. it's an indication of this quick moving storm system that's going to brush through while many of us are sleeping. you can see the embarcadero all lit up on this christmas eve. a few drops on the lens as well. what we are tracking over the next couple of days, scattered showers overnight, christmas day will begin wet in the morning but by the afternoon and evening those showers will get out of here and sunny weather it does return on thursday. and a really good stretch of sunshine will happen to finish off the week. right now it's chilly outlet there. 51 that current temperature in the city and in oakland as well. as we take a look at the beach hazard statement that will go into effect early tomorrow morning a risk of rip currents and sneaker waves.
