device through a slot in the door. it took two rounds from that special weapon before the guards could subdue the nine inmates and march them off. turning now to a major development in the massive hacking of equifax three years ago. >> the security breach of the credit reporting agency exposed 145 million americans' private information, and now the justice department has indicted four members of china's military. here's abc's pierre thomas. >> reporter: u.s. law enforcement for the first time accusing the chinese military of being behind perhaps the biggest hack of americans ever. the fbi claiming that these four members of china's people's liberation army were responsible for the 2017 breach of equifax, one of the nation's biggest credit reporting agencies. >> the scale of the theft was staggering. >> reporter: the theft included the names, dates of birth, and social security numbers of nearly half the u.s. population. also stolen, the driver's license numbers of at least 10 million americans. the attorney general saying the

hack imposed substantial costs and burdens to the victims. >> they had to take measures to protect themselves from identity theft. >> reporter: and beyond the massive privacy breach, authorities say the computer hack is part of the broader plan by china to commit economic espionage. u.s. officials say they're also concerned that chinese government officials might try to use the hack to target u.s. senior government officials. pierre thomas, abc news, washington. >> thank you, pierre. today could be the day the long-awaited and controversial sprint/t-mobile merger actually goes through. >> multiple reports say a federal judge is expected to okay the deal between the third and fourth-largest wireless carriers. the merger would create a company with 90 million customers. 13 attorneys general and the district of columbia are fighting the $26 billion deal. they feel the merger would lead to higher consumer prices. coming up next half hour, the emotional message from kobe bryant's widow. vanessa bryant has posted on social media about the loss of

good morning, everyone. thank you for joining us. pete has those tough decisions with all the women. the voters in new hampshire have a tough decision with all those candidates. who will get that final rose in new hampshire? no, so not to shade the iowa caucuses but it's new hampshire. people, instead of caucusing, they will put their votes in, go to the polling places. >> no apps. >> no apps. iowa, toss that app. new hampshire, don't even think about it at this point. but yes, it is election day. >> yes, it is. >> that's where we begin, with actual voting results coming in from the new hampshire primary. >> votes were cast just after midnight in three tiny townships in the granite state. the winner in dixville notch was michael bloomberg despite the fact that he hasn't campaigned in the state. >> when the votes were counted senator amy klobuchar had a very early lead.

the candidates spent the final day trying to meet as many voters as possible and attacking each other. abc's mary bruce reports. >> reporter: bernie sanders confident a win is in sight. >> if we win tomorrow i think we have got a path to victory for the democratic nomination. >> reporter: the senator from neighboring vermont turning up the heat on two of his rivals. >> one of the things that differentiates our campaign from other campaigns, my friend mr. buttigieg, my friend joe biden, they have dozens and dozens of billionaires contributing to their campaign. >> thanks for coming, i appreciate you being here. >> reporter: sanders well aware that pete buttigieg is riding a wave of momentum out of iowa. >> you mentioned bernie sanders and only bernie sanders. do you see this as a two-person race and does that help you? >> well, i certainly think there's a very clear contrast between my approach and my friend senator sanders' approach. he's talking about either a revolution or status quo and there's nothing in between. >> reporter: buttigieg also fending off attacks from joe

translate and harness all that enthusiasm into actual votes? >> that is asking them to help me in these last 24 hours. i am the only candidate that went from the rotary club of nashua, where i was asked to speak, to this rally. i think that is how you build this big coalition. >> pulling out all the stops. >> all the stops. >> reporter: bernie sanders is in the lead and you can feel that. his supporters have been waiting outside in the cold for hours, the line stretching on for blocks to get inside this massive rally. but that poll also shows that michael bloomberg is now in third place nationally with 15%. he isn't even campaigning here in new hampshire. instead he is building a huge organization and spending millions of dollars in other states. and these numbers show it could be paying off. >> thanks to mary in durham, new hampshire. president trump also made a late night stop in new hampshire holding a packed rally in manchester. the president celebrated his impeachment acquittal and took credit for the state of the economy and talked about plans

for some supporters to vote for quote the weakest democrat. >> i hear a lot of republicans tomorrow will vote for the weakest candidate possible of the democrats. does that make sense? you people wouldn't do that. my only problem is i'm trying to figure out who is their weakest candidate? my only problem is i'm trying to figure out who is their weakest candidate. i think they're all weak. >> new hampshire independents are allowed to vote in either party's primary. trump lost new hampshire by fewer than 3,000 votes. his campaign believes it's a state that could be flipped in november. abc news will have complete coverage from new hampshire tonight. the polls close at 8:00 p.m. eastern. a shoot-out inside a walmart quote could have been a whole lot worse, according to the police chief there in forrest city, arkansas. the gunfire ended with two officers wounds, a suspect dead and questions about what happened and why. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: federal firearm agents, arkansas police and other investigators are working the crime scene at this walmart. halfway between little rock and memphis.

>> gunshots inside a walmart. >> reporter: around 10:00 a.m., witnesses say a man with a gun was quote talking out of his head and making threats. >> it was gunshots and everybody started running. >> two officers got there quickly. >> officers engaged the suspect. the suspect is deceased. >> reporter: before the gunman was killed police say he shot both officers. >> we have officers down at this time. >> reporter: lieutenant eric varner, a 17-year veteran, was treated and released. detective eugene watlington is in surgery but expected to be okay. neither was wearing a bulletproof vest. >> with the officers' bravery and quick response, many lives again were saved today. >> reporter: in november a gunman killed two people in this oklahoma walmart parking lot. 22 were killed in a walmart in el paso. it's not clear whether walmart had any extra security measures in place at this store in arkansas. steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> thank you, steve. new details in the so-called

varsity blues case. federal prosecutors have released the fake rowing resume they say actress lori loughlin and her husband used to get one of their daughters into usc. it's not clear which daughter because the name is blacked out. the government denied claims it's withholding evidence which could help clear loughlin. she close on trial in the fall. federal prosecutors are calling for a stiff jail sentence for a former associate of president trump. roger stone was found guilty of lying to congress in connection with his part in the russia investigation and witness tampering. he will be sentenced next week. prosecutors are asking for seven to nine years in prison. stone has denied any wrongdoing. president trump's proposed budget is out and includes a new look for air force one. deep in the budget is a rendering showing a red, white, and blue design that would replace the light blue color scheme introduced by the kennedys in the early 1960s.
