who maybe started to think, ife- maybe she wasn't in "west side story"? [ laughter ] >> many people definitely thought i was lying. but you know who it was really hard for? steven. he has to be the greatest secret-keeper of all-time. he's in the editing room making this thing, every day he knows what he has. he's just like, cool, cool, cool -- nah, let's wait. nah, let's wait. what? >> jimmy: you think this was harder for him than you? >> of course it was hard for us. i mean -- it's a film made with such joy and love. and quite frankly, that's what we all need right about now. [ cheers and applause ] so i'm just really glad to be frank that we waited because it's a cinematic experience. >> jimmy: you want people to be in the movie theater to see it. >> yeah. last night was our premiere. [ cheers and applause ] yeah, it's so cool. and kid you not, it was like watching a broadway show. because people were reacting in ways that you don't really see in a movie theater.
literally, after every musical number, clapping. whoo! i was like, well, this is great. it feels like broadway came to the cinema, in a way. it's really lovely. >> jimmy: you met steven spielberg backstage at "hamilton" when you were in the cast? >> yeah, i'm an original company member of "hamilton." conversation. later on making the movie he was like, i remember meeting you. i said, i don't know how, it was in passing. he said, no, i had a thought, i think i'm going to make something with her. i thought, that is wild, and esp. [ cheers and applause ] and i just -- as a latina, i'm really proud that i'm able to do this because this is the thing rita gave me. she let me see that i had possibility. there was the possibility of my success. because she sort of looked like me. she was the closest thing i could find in movie musicals, to be perfectly honest. now i get to be the lady in the yellow dress with the red skirt for some young afro latina, for some young girl who looks like me.
