being with us. >> i'm marla tellez. >> i'm jon kelley. this morning a developing story in france where hundreds of police have their guns drawn all aimed at one single target. an apartment building where a man suspected of seven killings is reportedly hiding out. police are gearing up to go in. >> he's in a small house, and outside hundreds of police who have been trying to persuade this 24-year-old man to come out and to come out without having more violence. we understand an order came some time ago to move in, to end negotiations or else the police would storm the house. we now believe that the order from the highest authorities in paris now has to come down. as it does, there will be some

imminent and dramatic movement. we now have a better idea of the profile of this individual. his name is muhammad merah, a nigerian extract, he trained in pakistan's tribal territories and he returned to france to commit jihad. he's admitted in great detail through the carrying out of all of the recent killings here in the toulouse area. he says he killed three french soldiers last week to protest western intervention in afghanistan, and that he killed those jewish children and one adult on monday at that jewish school to a vafrj, quote, the children being killed in palestine. that's where we are right now where we are with this unfolding story. i'm jim a seda reporting from toulouse, back to you. >> the standoff coming on the very same day as the victims are laid to rest. 400 gathering at a cemetery in israel to remember the four victims. a rabbi, his two children and a

7-year-old girl. the u.s. ambassador to israel and the foreign minister of france were both on hand for this ceremony. new at 11:00, a tragic end to the search of a san francisco man who disappeared in death valley national park. 67-year-old george koller has been found dead near the campground where he was staying with a bicycle group. authorities say foul play is no. suspected. niasller w last seen monday er at hding for his tent the mesquite spring campground, 180 miles northst of las mofin nowh e to be found and there was no indication he had ever slept in his tent. marla, this morning the city of oakland remembering four officers who gave their lives in the line of duty three years ago today. nbc bay area's christie smith is live at police headquarters with a look at this emotional tribute. christie, good morning. >> good morning, jon. hard to believe three years ago this those officers were killed

in the line of duty on the streets of oakland. at the oakland police department there were motorcycles outside, two of the officers killed were motorcycle officers. inside right now, a private ceremony is under way for the families. the police chief is here, the mayor, members of the city council and they'll be unveiling a highway sign dedicated to the officer's memories. it was very emotional this morning. of course, the family members seeing that hung up on interstate 580. oakland police officers placed a wreath on it this morning up above on the overpass at keller and the oakland fire department flew an american flag from the fire trucks as drivers honked and waved in support. that sign unbolted and brought back here to the oakland police department headquarters. the officers, daniel sakai, sergeant mark duncan were shot and kill in a traffic stop on a

parolee who opened fire. it was one of the deadliest days in law enforcement history. what will happen after this is over is that the family is going to come out and go ahead and sign the back of that freeway sign and then it will be put back up on interstate 580 near keller this afternoon. reporting live in oakland, christie smith, nbc bay area news. three occupy oakland protesters facing a robbery and hate crime charges. one of the protesters used gay slurs during an argument with a woman who confronted them at a rally. another protester allegedly grabbed the woman's wallet. the defense says the alleged victim actually provoked this incident and also used racial slurs. protesters will be back in court in recall april. search grows frantic as the family waits for the fifth straight day for any word of their missing daughter. nbc bay area's bob redell is live in morgan hill with the latest on this search. bob, good morning.

>> reporter: good morning to you, marla. sierra lamar's mother marlene has reached out to mark klaas. he's a father whose own daughter was murdered and abducted. he now runs the klaas foundation to help find kids. the foundation is trying to assess how it might be able to help out the lamar family. he tells us, mark klaas tells us on the phone that marlene lamar is convinced her daughter did not run away. the sheriff's office of santa clara county does not know whether or not she ran away or was abducted. the sergeant tell us us is what makes this case so rare is that there's no evidence pointing one way or the other. sierra was last seen at 6:00 last friday morning at her home in morgan hill. at 7:15, she was supposed to catch a school bus a couple of blocks away and we were at this intersection of palm and dougherty where she is a sophomore. she never made that bus. a search party eventually saw her cell phone, and as you can see on this map, that's in the

opposite direction of her school bus stop e less than a mile from her home and incidentally, that location of the cell phone is steps away from a bus stop that ends at the station in san jose. no cluesiot that cell phone from her whereabouts. this whole area is rural with little traffic and it's possible for something to happen and there not to be any witnesses. family and friends are praying for the best. they gathered last night at a local church for a candlelight vigil during which marlene lamar begged for her daughter's quick return. >> if you can hear me, just realize how much i love you and want you back. i want you back. i love you, and i just want you back. >> reporter: the santa clara county sheriff's office says it has beenno talking to sierra lamar's high school friends and they've also been trying to track down registered sex offenders here in morgan hill

and in fremont where sierra lamar used to live until recently to find out what their whereabouts were friday morning. when i spoke to mark klaas i asked him what advice would you give to the mother of sierra lamar, and he told me that he told her, eat, get rest and don't give up hope. reporting live in morgan hill, bob redell, nbc bay area news. today in san francisco there's a brand new sheriff on the job, vicky hennessy, the first woman to take on the position. she's she has more than three decades for city services, most recently the head of emergency management. she joined the sheriff's department in 1975 when she became the youngestta capin of california law enforcement back in 1983. yes, a bit of a trailblazer. hennessey taking over after mayor ed lee suspended sheriff ross mirkarimi accusing him of official misconduct after pleading guilty in connection with a domestic violence case. the mayor will refer this charge

to the city's ethics commission which will decide whether the board of supervisors should now vote on removing him from office. two water main breaks shut down traffic in neighboring east bay cities this morning. in berkeley, a six-inch water main broke at about 3:00 this morning sending water spilling across the roadway. utility crews spent the morning working to repair the roadway and also in emoriville, another break caused water to gush at about 1:30 this morning. the entire city block is closed to traffic from 59th treat. east bay utility crews worked throughout the morning to clear that road. >> one of the last open paechs of land in san jose being zoned for a mega retail center. 45 makers of land on the highway 85 and expressway now rezoned for commercial use. the city council approving this concept in a 7 to 1 vote.

mayor chuck reid says the new retail center will help boost retail sales tax revenue in the city, but critics of this project, they voiced their concerns that the retail center will have a negative effect on traffic and overall quality of life. >> the second day of spring turning out to be a nice one, but changes in store according to meteorologist miss christina loren. good changes for those of you who wanted to hit the sierra nevada and didn't get a chance to over the course of the very mild winter. we have more rain and sierra snow as we head through the next 72 c hours. our first system arrives tonight. we'll see our first shower by about 8:00 p.m. and then we have a mean system on the way for the weekend and that's the story in the weather department. right now it is mild. take a look at sunnyvalley, 68 degrees and 60 in livermore and 62 degrees in san jose. clouds will increase ahead of the front that will bring showers especially during your

punished by the nfl after an investigation into the team's so-called bounty program. the nfl says saints team members were rewarded with cash for hurting opponents on the field. in addition to this suspension, payton will also have to pay half a million dollars in fines and the team will lose its second-round draft pick this year. the team's former defensive coordinator who orchestrated the program is suspended indefinitely. >> wow! bringing all new meaning to all's fair in hate. espn says smith and the niners have come to terms on that three-year deal that will pay him $8 million per year. it's been a wild week for the niners and for smith after it was revealed the team was pursuing a deal with former colts quarterback peyton manning which sent smith out for an interview with the dolphins. manning ended up signing with the denver broncos which as you expect set off shuffling in the mile high city. quarterback tim tebow will be

doing that in new york for the new york jets. a nascar racer is making a pit stop in the south bay today. kyle busch will visit elementary sool in san jose this afternoon. he'll be there to meet 6-year-old a.j.bulo. b boulo designed a sketch of how he would design a sprint cup car. that beat out 26,000 others in the contest sponsored by toyota racing. he had input from the racing flag flames to the checkered flag on the car's rear bumper and here's a.j. with a real life version of the car. what a cutie pie. >> he's 6 years old, designing race cars. >> he's got a bright future. >> very cool. very cool. let's check outside what's happening with the weather and christina loren is here to tell

us what's nice. >> we'll see a great day with the temperatures in the 70s, upper 50s and no 50s, but tomorrow we are going struggle to break into the upper 50s with rain showers on the way. so enjoy the sunshine while it lasts. temperatures will be pretty nice, like i said, upper 50s and the storm track comes back into the bay area. high pressure is the reason why it's been so nice. we still have the offshore winds and breezes are light, but they're coming out of the northeast and that's a warming wind and it pumps from land to sea, warming us up along the bay. by tomorrow, showers move in and we meet back here at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow. most of the activity will be done. the next future cast shows the next system moves in at about 11:00 a.m. tomorrow we'll have a few showers on the radar and nothing heavy. the whole thing clears out of here before we hit 1:00 p.m. cloudy conditions for the second half of your thursday and the nice day friday with temperatures in the 60s and take a look as we get closer to the

weekend. we have a potent cold front. that's heavy rain on the way to the bay area, and enough to make outdoor plans unmanageable on is the. if you want to get outdoors this weekend you'll be able to do so. the second half of sunday will be nice and the cool side and we'll be done with those pesky showers. by tuesday, another round of light rain and it's a roller coaster ride and very typical in the bay area and we're still trying to make up the deficit when it comes to the rainfall total still up 50% even in the north bay. we'll need all of the rain we can get and we'll get a lot as we head through this weekend. back to you. >> you may have heard by now some of the complaints that the new ipad runs warmer than the old ones. apple says hey, no big deal. apple shareholders, they agree. good morning. apple shares crossed to an all-time high before settling down a bit, and a somewhat remarkable day of trading, probably a bigger issue than a

welcome back, everyone. we can tell you a plan is in the works to bring two enemy nations together through the magic of music. the north korean national symphony orchestra playing a concert down in atlanta following a tour of other cities. it's still awaiting government approval. the tour would come four years after the new york philharmonic's historic performance in pyongyang. >> this morning prince william is back in britain after two months of being stationed in the falklands. he was one of several pilots on call for search and rescue missions. kate middleton, of course, she was present for his return. they were reunited later at kensington palace. coming up, a legendary comedy duo coming together after a decades-long break. we'll let you know who dan ackroyd's teaming up with and if the new project is something strange in the neighborhood.

welcome back now. grab those shades if you'll be hitting the front door any time soon. a lot of sunshine over the greater bay area and temperatures climbing into the 70s as we head throughout the afternoon today, this will be the warmest day of the week. we have quite a cooldown tomorrow. temperatures tumble as an area of low pressure funnels down the coastline. the first one arrives tomorrow bringing light showers to the greater bay area, starting tonight and into the north bay. the bulk comes through tomorrow morning at:00 a.m. and make sure you get plenty of time to get to your commute. cloudy conditions by 2:00 p.m. and friday looks good. temperatures will climb into the 60s and saturday a potent cold front arrives. it doesn't look like it will be a total washout for the weekend and just the first part of saturday, kind of soggy. 59 degrees by thursday. 62 for your friday. as we head for this weekend, few showers linger on friday and
