now. >> good evening, i'm diane dwyer. emotions ran high in san bruno on the second anniversary of the explosion there. eight people died, others were injured. there was a memorial at a neighborhood park. but some who survived the inferno boycotted the event. more on the latest of the controversy. >> reporter: well, diane, the city wanted the ceremony to be held at city park because it has a sculpture specifically for that purpose. well, a number of neighbors wanted it to be held here at the site of the explosion. what is clear is, two years later, this community has a lot more healing ahead of it. >> in memory of lavonbullis. >> reporter: the dead were honored with a moment of silence and a plaque at san bruno city park. survivors of the explosion who lost loved ones sat in the front row.

>> people need this memorial and the remembering of it today. and it is something we need to do for ourselves also. >> reporter: the mayor says the sculpture was meant for occasions such as this, but a number of neighbors chose not to attend, and instead gathered at the site of the explosion n. >> this is where it happened. >> reporter: did you boycott the memorial? >> no, we just can't be in two places at once. this is from the engine in front of 1645 claremont. >> reporter: to observe the memorial, one neighbor made replicas. >> still emotional, you know? >> reporter: and what continues to gnaw at family and friends is the role that pg&e played with the action and inaction that federal regulators say led to the explosion. >> it really believe it could have stopped.

but i hope things go in the right way so it doesn't happen again. >> we're still scratching our head, why? it was preventible. can we go on? we have to. can they improve? they better. >> reporter: now the mayor did say that the city is more than willing to have a memorial plaque placed somewhere in this neighborhood. the mayor just wants to wait until all the construction and re-building is complete. live in san bruno, i'm arturo santiago. and the search for 28 brett olson from lafayette came to a sad ending this morning. the fishermen found his body not far from where he was last seen in chico. olson disappeared as he was tubing with friends. >> his body, a week from the day he went missing was pulled from the sacramento river in a place that is known as the washout.

>> his parents were close by when they got ready for another search, and heard about the body. thousands of volunteers from chico helped search for olson. there were many followers on a facebook account that started early last week, trying to find him. and twitter is now filled for thoughts and prayers for olson. he was a student in san luis obispo. and the president of the university reached out to the family saying it is painful for us at cal-poly, whose life was filled with dreams and hope. our thoughts are with the family as they move through this difficult time. a memorial is planned in lafayette. and we have more information tonight on the deadly car crash in walnut creek. he is accused of running down two women last night, killing one of them and injuring

another. after being released from the hospital today he was booked into the martinez county jail for vehicular manslaughter. the two were both on the sidewalk when they were hit. according to the mercury news, hicks came to the bay area to visit her son and his wife. she was also a math teacher in santa barbara. there is a small memorial where the truck crashed into the women. and dozens gathering today to remember a chp officer killed in the line of duty in the east bay last week. they also gathered to raise funds for his wife and four children. nbc bay area kim terry has more. >> reporter: diane, the new fairfield business was busy from opening to close today. the owners say it is really the

busiest they have seen since last month. many came out knowing that all proceeds from sales and a silent auction will go to youngstrom's wife and four kids. >> all right, you guys are all set. >> reporter: the highway, a trampoline park in fairfield has been opened for 24 days. but the owners say they wanted to do something to help the family of california highway patrol officer youngstrom. the 37-year-old father died wednesday, after being taken off life support. he had been shot near alamo. the police had shut down the interstate for hours after the shooting. >> i actually was on my way out of town for some business meetings. and had to divert because of the shooting. at that time, i didn't know it was a chp officer. that night, when i got in -- when i landed i found out who it was and what had happened. and you know, i thought -- through the night, what we could

do to make a difference. upda this is what we came up with. >> reporter: all the proceeds and money made from the silent auction will be given to the youngstrom family. >> he lived like a mile away from my home. it really hits home. it is a tragedy. >> i can't imagine losing my husband and my daughter's father. i only have one child, but losing a father and having four small children, i just can't imagine where you start when you wake up in the morning. so it is -- every bit will help. and i know that money can only do so much for the family, but there is a lot of things that it can help. >> if you could make it to jump highway today they will still accept donations for youngstrom's family in the coming weeks. all that money will go to a trust account and will be set up in his name at wells fargo bank. all right, thank you, officer youngstrom was honored

today at the san mateo memorial service. >> please join me in a moment of silence for the california highway patrol officer youngstrom. >> reporter: the service in honor of fallen police officers and firefighters is held every year on the sunday before september 11th. >> its an important thing, we're all busy, but some of the people have made the ultimate sacrifice. we miss them. for a lot of the families it is just to let them know they have not been forgotten. >> it was started by the california firefighter greg kaduna, whose family member died in the line of duty. and shooting happening near police headquarters. investigators say they received a call around 2:00 yesterday morning, when they arrived they say the store's cashier had been shot and killed. police are not yet releasing the

identity of the victim or the description of the gunman. and the bay area branch of the susan g. komen for the cure foundation, hosting the annual race for the cure today. fewer people took part this year than years past, organizers say that is because the national organization made the controversial decision last year to pull the funding for breast screenings at planned parenthood. that decision was made because planned parenthood also provides for abortions. this year, under 3,000 people registered. one spokesperson said that it is unfortunate that the national office was speaking for all offices. >> we're not opposed to planned parenthood. we were never opposed to it. it was a badly worded policy, and unfortunately it just caused a lot of negative effects. >> after difficult criticism from the public, the national

a crash in los angeles early this morning killed three young people. it happened when a driver lost control of his car, flipped over, and then crashed into a pizza parlor and hit a gas main.

witnesses say the fire went so fast, and was so hot the victims didn't have a chance to escape. >> when i was calling 911, you could see that the driver -- he was screaming for help. >> the driver was going about 80 miles an hour, according to police, in a 35 miles an hour zone. friends say the driver and his friends had been drinking at a birthday party before the crash. wind is stalling the efforts of firefighters battling nine major fires across the state. one east of ukiah, it burned an area nearly the size of san francisco. tonight, the red flag warning shows that gusts of up to 40 miles an hour is not helping. the fire is 15% contained. about 50 homes and out-buildings are in the path tonight, many of them under evacuation orders. and now, to decision 2012.

after weeks of running virtually neck and neck, new polls show some daylight has suddenly opened up between president obama and governor mitt romney. nbc bay area's kristen welker reports. >> reporter: campaigning in the battle ground state of florida today, president obama tried to turn the focus from friday's poor jobs report to medicare. >> i want you to know, florida, i will never turn medicare into a voucher. >> reporter: the president is enjoying a post-convention bump, the latest gallop polls showing him ahead of mitt romney by five points, his biggest lead since july. meanwhile, romney appearing on "meet the press" disclosed he would preserve the most popular parts of the president's health care plan. something he said before, but went into more today. >> i am not getting rid of all of health reform, there are things i likes, one to make sure

people with pre existing conditions can get coverage. >> reporter: he said he would allow the policy with people at a certain age, he targeted the overall tax proposal, and romney replied. >> people at the high end will have higher exemptions. >> reporter: but he gave no chance for president obama to take a swipe. >> that is not bold leadership. that is bad math. that gets a failing grade. >> reporter: and ann romney also entered the fray, defending her husband after a bar arage of attacks. >> i was grateful for the opportunity we had at the convention for others to speak up and talk about the kind of lives we've led, and in particular, for mitt, who really

his plan to not lower the taxes and not favor the rich is impossible. as for president obama, he said at the convention that the tax plan would cut the deficits by four trillion. the plan comes from a liberal think tank. others say the president's plan may get close to reducing the deficit by three trillion, but not four trillion as he claimed. and president obama will be heading our way in october for his 8th fundraising pitch for the bay area since april 2011. details are finalized. but organizers say it is scheduled for october 8th. his appearance will be similar to the one in february. at the masonic center in san francisco. and tomorrow, oakland mayor qwan planning to kick off spirit week to keep campaigns in oakland. it is designed to let the a's

and raiders know they're irreplaceable and appreciated by residents. there will be tailgates, rallies and other activities. but first, the tailgate party at the coliseum. both the raiders and a's have been actively talking about moving. and the warriors are planning to move to san francisco when their lease is up in a few years. and the 49ers moving to santa clara, even though their stadium is under construction, many of the faithful are already buying season tickets. in fact, no pro sports team has sold as many seats. fans have already bought up 670 million worth of seats and luxury boxings. they also say 70% of current ticket holders are spending thousands to keep their seats. right now we want to check in with rob mayeda, and i hear there is a warmup coming up? >> yes, there could be 90s coming back to the bay area.

revolutionary party on the best of terms. the reasons behind the decision are not clear. he lost office in 2006 by less than a percentage point. but this year, he finished seven points behind the winner. and instead of books, 25,000 teachers in chicago are pecking up pi -- picking up picket signs, at issue, pay and negotiations. talks broke down tonight. the mayor is pushing hard for big changes in the city's schools. >> of course, teachers, we don't want to strike. that is not our premise. but right is right. you know, i mean as teachers we want to do what is right for our students. >> officials are vowing to keep schools open. most of the city's 400,000 students are eligible for free meals, and many go hungry without school meals. it has been a wild weather weekend for the east coast. it struck several major cities,

including in new york, where tornadoes hit. nbc's michelle franzen reports. >> reporter: up and down the east coast, a cleanup after a series of violent storms that even spawned a pair of tornadoes in two new york city neighborhoods. the first twister formed over the atlantic before moving on to land, ripping through a seaside community on the edge of queens. ten miles away, a more powerful tornado tore through a densely pop la poplated area. >> my son said oh my god, we're being hit by a tornado. >> reporter: the homeowners are assessing the damage, but many feel lucky, saying a tornado came through, but nobody was injured. >> we were fortunate, nothing happened. >> reporter: the threatening skies caused delays at sporting events. in new jersey, the rutgers football fans ran for cover.

the washington area was hit hard with winds of nearly 60 miles an hour. in virginia and maryland, the storms pushed down trees, smashed cars and left 150,000 customers without power. and on the potomac river, 19 people were rescued, after the large racing boat they were on capsized. what powered these violent storms. >> we saw a very big shift in the weather pattern in the last couple of days with cooler air dropping down, producing 300 wind reports all over the northeast. and then we have the tornadoes in new york city on top of that. >> reporter: volatile storms not uncommon this time of year, but this weekend they packed an extra punch. michelle franzen, nbc news, new york. and you may be surprised to hear what fell out of a sky and landed in a neighborhood near seattle. and the bay area forecast coming up. rob mayeda has the forecast

populate. imagine finding part of an airplane in your front yard, which is just what happened near seattle this weekend. investigators say it was the door to the landing gear of a boeing 767. nobody was hurt, but the incident shocked one neighborhood. >> reporter: it is a mystery of sorts. >> and the big part landed right behind that red car over there.

>> reporter: how a landing gear door from a passing jetliner ended up crashing into a seattle neighborhood. >> it was a big flash of metal. >> reporter: neighbors in kent, washington say they saw a low-flying plane like this one, just before the carbon door landed near this man's house. >> came to the driveway, there was part of an airplane sitting here. >> reporter: a tag on the door indicates it came from a boeing 767. the faa is investigating. >> they will look closely at the maintenance of it. and then also, whether the airplane, the gear was extended at the proper speeds. >> reporter: it is not the first time airplanes rained down in populated areas. last year, a neighborhood was peppered with debris, it smashed car windows. nobody was hrt. in flood, the door from a stair well ripped away, landing on a

golf course. in 2009, the engine of a dc 9 landed in areas, some of the parts weighed more than 500 parts. >> when you think of the amount of flights that we do per day, both with the airline, the airplanes as well as general aviation, there are thousands of planes that fly every day. it is very rare to have something come off of them. >> reporter: back in washington state, john hansen is holding part of a door. charles hadlock, nbc news. all right, let's check with rob mayeda on what is happening. well, right now we're watching the fog moving along the coast, inland by tomorrow morning, right now, 50s, 40s, in novato, 60s, 60 in san jose, we're getting close to the time

of year where the morning temperatures could be 49, the afternoon high temperatures making the mid-80s. we get the 40 degree swings in temperatures in just 24 hours as the nights get longer, we see the cooler overnight temperatures in parts of the bay area. in solano county, no worries about the thunderstorms in the bay area or even the sierra right now. the winds are aloft. out of the west-southwest. if you're heading down the los angeles or san diego tomorrow, you may see showers and thunderstorms as the moisture continues across the deserts of southern california. the moisture we're seeing here -- i should say tomorrow mortga morning will be the low clouds, and passing into the valley, and the altamonte pass, 6:00 in the morning. lunchtime, we'll see low clouds just off the golden gate bridge.
