a devastating crime ask a devastating loss. the ashes of a two-year-old girl stolen from a cemetery in san jose. who would do such a thing? tonight a pleading with whoever stole those ashes to please live at t calvary catholic cemetery. how did this happen? >> reporter: you know, police are investigating just that trying to find out who would do

this and why. the ashes were located inside a building on site here. they were taken along with another precious item. tonight in a place of remembrance, pain overwhelms the family once again. it 2-year-old kelly battled cancer late in her short life and passed away four years ago. her mother marcela lopez kept her ashes at the calvary catholic cemetery in san jose. the lone spot along the wall decorated with small characters she loved. police were called here thursday. the urn with kelly's ashes was stolen. so was the golden cylinder that have locks of her hair. the suspect overlooking the picture of the little girl. lopez says i want her ashes. i don't know what anyone can do with them. >> we are so sad. >> reporter: lopez can barely sleep. she and her best friend have visited the cemetery often hoping to find clues.

>> maybe they don't have a heart, you know? it's really, really hard. >> reporter: police believe someone may have thought the items were valuable. they're asking for the public's help. >> it means a lot to them. so if somebody has some type of information that would lead to the arrest of the location of this urn there could possibly be a reward. the information can be completely anonymous. >> a mother just wants the remains of her little girl back where they belong. saying that's all i ask so i can see her and visit her again like i used to. and the mother also believes that the crime may have happened as early as tuesday or wednesday. if you know anything or recognize those items call police right away. ian cull, nbc bay areata 880 in oakland is finally repaired tonight. caltran is tweeting out this picture of the finished work. cal tranis also urging anybody

whose car was damaged by the pothole to file a claim. the emergency repair work stalled traffic for several hours at the height of the evening commute. a deadly motorcycle crash tied up traffic on northbound 680 for hours tonight as well. the crash happened around 6:00 p.m. witnesses tell the chp that the motorcyclist was lain-splitting or sharing lanes with cars when he smashed into a white work truck. traffic there was, as you can see, backed up for miles. new video just into our news room tonight. a mountain lion on the prowl. this is in the san mateo county which is just above redwood city. neighbor's security camera captured this video overnight. a large cat hanging out and walking down the street. bay area territory. now to southern one los angeles crew chasing down

today. today. and they got a strong reaction from an oakland city leader. cheryl? >> reporter: well, we caught up with oakland city council member dan and told him will lapd's stern message. and tonight he has a strong reaction. downtown los angeles, a five and a half hour drive from oakland. lapd believes oakland gang members made that drive taking them on a high-speed chase. police were chasing suspects believed to be involved in multiple car burglaries. >> they drove wildly and recklessly. >> reporter: racing from one freeway to the next, the suspect slamming into cars on the 405. but in the end their luck ran out. police arresting four people from oakland. >> 230 burglaries

and. >> reporter: it's not the first time. l.a. police say for three months people have been driving from oakland to commit a series of burglaries, this one caught on tape in april. >> so my short message to anyone from a burglary that los angeles is aware of you, and you will be arrested if you come into town, just like your friends were today. >> reporter: oakland city councilman dan calb understands the frustration. >> we don't need any name-calling. what we need are people working together with our investigative units, our police chiefs and our citi to try >> reporter: now we did reach out to oakland's mayor. her office referred us to o.p.d. oakland police tonight have no comment. nbc bay area news. new details about that overnightstandoff in the south bay. police say this man right here attacked a woman with a knife

and shut himself in his apartment and refused to come out. it all started around 11:30 last night on calaveras and temple. investigators say ho was swinging a kitchen knife around trying to cut the woman. then he took off from his apartment. after four hours, s.w.a.t. went into his apartment and they arrested him. >> southwest airlines is not to blame for the death of a cnbc financial analyst. that's when an alameda county jury decided today. we're talking about this man. in 2014 he died after suffering a blood clot on a southwest flight from oakland to california. his family sued southwest for millions in dollars in damages. saying they didn't give him the help they needed. they ruled they were negligent with his death but did not cause it. as a result they will not pay any money to the family.

one thief stole an entire amazon delivery truck full of packages. chp posting these pictures asking if your package was recently missing or lost. the truck was stolen last week when the driver got out to check on his van door. the thief jumped in, and met up with another man in the pickup truck. the two of them allegedly loaded up that truck. a second man drove to a nearby house. the next day police served a search warrant there but only found one of the 71 stolen packages. >> it's really ridiculous. it really is. be considerate of others. people are waiting on their packages. and t t the truck. that's really bad. >> investigators are now looking to arrest 48-year-old charles>> a good look at this guy. this is malik he is accused of murdering two people in san mateo last month. did you meet him at all in the past year? they think that information might shed light on a possible

motive into the killing. taxi driver abdul nashir were both lured to skyline and then astabbed to death. detectives say no information is too small. and an armed bay man police stopped him twice on the asame day because of the color of his skin. he took the case to court and he won. >> i saw it on the news another guy getting shot. today because he kept calm on the early morning of july 28th, 2017. cyrus and a friend were at this video before the officers them. approached cyrus and his friend, let's watch the body camera the officers heard telling his colleague this. >> i came here just to get a drink, and the whole damn building is surrounded by

these -- with hoodies and backpacks. >> reporter: b.m. is an abbreviation for "blackmail," police jargon. the police officer tells cyrus and his friend that there's been a robbery in the area and the two look like the suspects. cyrus declined to give them his i.d. and leave the store. with the 7-eleven incident behind him, he called his mother to tell her that police mistook him for a robbery suspect. someone around hereust've overhearim >> reporter: police walk up to cyrus again but this time they n? >> reporter: cyrus asks why he's being detained. >> this is not the right time to ask questions. >> when they ran my record, there was nothing, no probation, nothing. they were all surprised because they were judging me off my image. >> reporter: but police still arrested him for resisting arrest. that charge was later dropped.

melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. power problem at seas. the cruise ship had to make a u-turn because of a power outage. the coast guard says the ship lost electricity, steering, propulsion but regained power after a while. celebrity cruises says it will be inspected before it goes back out again. tensions now seen in the persian gulf region. tonight we learn that the u.s. is putting patrol aircraft above u.s. ships in that critical strait of hormuz in order to ensure their safety. this all comes after iranian forces seized a british registered tanker ship and its crew in the strait of hormuz earlier today claiming that the ship broke the law. they also stopped another ship. and seized one of iran's ship earlier this month. the u.s. now saying it'll put

new at 11:00, a new startup is helping to ease the bay area's housing shortage. they are looking to find homeowners who have enough backyard space to build a so-called granny unit. the co-founders of the company just surveyed a couple potential build sites. >> reporter: i caught up with the co-founders of rent the backyard after they checked out a property in redwood city, they've been pretty busy.

they just started looking for places to build this week. >> we're getting close to 20 now so our calendar's quickly booking up. >> reporter: here is some video they shared. they check out how big the backyard is and mark it with cones. >> so what we say is that you need a 30-by-30 space in your backyard. that usually covers most of the setbacks from the property line that you need. >> reporter: their idea is based on new state laws passed in 2016 to make it easier to build so-called granny flats and earn extra rental income. in may san jose mayor sam stepped it up by pledging to fasttrack permits. these entrepreneurs promised to handle everything. >> does the homeowner need to put anything down? >> no. absolutely no money down for the homeowner. we just enter that they enter into a partnership with us and split the rental income. >> reporter: according to the committee to house the bay area or casa, about 300,000 of these

small units can be built without affecting traffic or density. the entrepreneur's figure, they will make a handsome profit if they just build a percentage of those homes. >> the idea being that the rent is really high in the bay area so we are even raffling 50% of the rental value. >> reporter: and right now they're focusing on the south bay and the peninsula. but they say they'll b in the b. right now they actually haven't built something yet, but as soon as they identify a property, they say it should only take them a few months from permitting to completion. nbc bay area news. >> thank you, sergio. bagels has an influx of unwanted customers, rats. the department of health shut down the popular bagel shop on wednesday after a routine

inspection. the department calls the infestation severe, posing an imminent public health risk. inspectors also found cockroaches. the store must now get rid of all pests, seal all holes and be inspected again before it can reopen. boeing is t a financial hit. companies reporting nearly $5 billion loss. largest quarte. the money will be paid out to the airlines that those airlines have had to a busy summer travel period without the jets leading to thousands of canceled flights. back in march the faa grounded all 737 max jets after deadly crashes, one in ethiopia and the other in indonesia. >> it's one small step for man. >> 50 years later, astronaut

splashdown anniversary here coming up. we'll start you off with tomorrow morning, upper 50s and low 60s. you get that fog at the coast line. then by the bay we'll see some patchy areas of fog. 61 here for the south bay and the tri-valley at 60. right here through san francisco, it will be the chillst there with that fog in the morning and temperatures in the 50s. you're going to be able to figure out exactly how things will be for you 7:00 in the morning there's your low clouds in the north bay. coast line a little bit of the peninsula also through the east bay. through the afternoon, sunshin e immediate coast line will hold onto some patchy areas of fog. temperatures tomorrow look really nice. they warm up a degree or two. but i still don't think it will be too hot with 84 in san jose. over through the east bay, some upper 80s in danville, concord, and also pitts bunk rg. the peninsula 79 in redwood

city. then we go right up through san francisco. it'll be a cool day with temperatures in the 60s. but even after that morning fog, you do get some afternoon sunshine. right here through novato, sonoma, and santa rosea, low up by wednesday, thursday, and friday's forecast. so warminghe end ofexvalleys, y the upper 80s saturday and sunday. and then here we go. >> mid-90s possible by next wednesday, thursday, and friday. we may actually have to increase these temperatures a little bit more. we want to wait till some more information comes in. but right now just be prepared for some hot weather here by the end of next week. okay. looking for something to do this weekend? we talked about the uss hornet, which is what recovered the apollo 11 space capsule and the three astronauts on board. that is right here in alameda all the time, but they have some

researchers analyzed data from nearly 277,000 pregnant women who their marijuana use. and the year before pregnancy, marijuana use increased from nearly 7% in 2009 to over 12% in 2017. using during pregnancy also on the rise from close to 2% to over 3%. trading fares. they protested in san francisco this morning. uber drivers want higher pay, better working conditions. right now they're classified as independent contractors so they get no benefits no matter how long they work. it's working on lawmakers and leaders on a possible solution. the tower gets a lot of attention. but believe it or not, neighbors are tired of looking at it. the crown plays the same 45-minute loop of images and it's been the same pictures for the last year and a half. the community says they want some variety and they're about to get it. the video artist placed cameras
